Opis:
The paper aims to comparison the permeability coefficient in non-cohesive soils by the method of test pumping and based on tests in a consolidometer. The tests were carried out on 18 types of non-cohesive soils with different fraction. Pumping tests were carried out according to the standard method i.e. by making one well with a diameter of 400 mm and installing two piezometers at different distances from the well. The water table change was measured in piezometers during water pumping from the well. Tests in the consolidometer were carried out on soil samples that were first compacted to the same density index as in the test site. The tests were carried out with a continuous inflow of water from below with constant gradients of 0.50. The tests presented in the paper allow to verify and compare the values of the permeability coefficient in non-cohesive soils determined in the field and laboratory tests.

This paper analyses and discusses experimental results of undrained triaxial tests. The tests were performed on non-cohesive partially saturated soil samples subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The tests were aimed at determining the influence of saturation degree on soil’s undrained response (shear strength, excess pore pressure generation). The saturation of samples was monitored by checking Skempton’s parameter B. Additionally, seismic P-wave velocity measurements were carried out on samples characterized by various degrees of saturation. The tests clearly showed that liquefaction may also take place in non-cohesive soils that are not fully saturated and that the liquefaction potential of such soils strongly depends on the B parameter.

Opis:
In the paper, the experimental results of undrained response of non-cohesive soil subjected to either monotonic or cyclic loading, are analysed and discussed. The analysis was based on the results of comprehensive testing programme made of "Skarpa" sand investigated in the triaxial compression. Two main undrained behaviours such as liquefaction and cyclic mobility were experimentally identified and studied. In the analysis of undrained behaviour, the concept of steady state of deformation has been adopted. It was shown that the undrained response of non-cohesive soils is governed by different failure mechanisms than in the case of drained samples. In undrained failure mechanism, an important role is played by an instability line, which may be identified with the initiation of potential liquefaction.

Opis:
A series of experiments on samples of five clayey soils gave evidence that cyclic freezing and thawing significantly affects the permeability coefficient. An attempt to analyze these changes on base of the Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM photographs of microstructures has been made. A simplistic equation (Eq. 11) has been drawn, describing the permeability coefficient as a function of hydraulic radius and pore area. An approach to determine the permeability coefficient by Eq. (11) on base of SEM photographs, in which the pores were identified manually, yielded results comparable to the Falling Head Test (FHT). However, since the identification of pores in SEM photographs seems the critical point of the method, the Numerical Image Analysis (NIA) has been applied. The procedure of finding the optimum threshold Topt has been described, based on minimization of the deviation ?ki,j, calculated as the absolute value of the difference kSEM,i,j and kFHT,j, i.e. the permeability coefficients determined by the SEM analysis and FHT, respectively. It has been proved that the optimum threshold values can be described as a function of image parameters, i.e. mean grey level Lmean and standard deviation σ n.

Opis:
The paper concerns the evaluation of the initial stiffness of selected cohesive soils based on laboratory tests. The research materials used in this study were clayey soils taken from the area of the road embankment No. WD-18, on the 464th km of the S2 express-way, Konotopa-Airport route, Warsaw. The initial stiffness is represented here by the shear modulus (Gmax) determined during resonant column tests. In the article, a number of literature empirical formulas for defining initial value of the shear modulus of soils being examined were adopted from the literature in order to analyze the data set. However, a large discrepancy between laboratory test results and the values of Gmax calculated from empirical relationships resulted in the rejection of these proposals. They are inaccurate and do not allow for an exact evaluation of soil stiffness for selected cohesive soils. Hence, the authors proposed their own empirical formula that enables the evaluation of the test soils’ Gmax in an easy and uncomplicated way. This unique formula describes mathematically the effect of certain soil parameters, namely mean effective stress ( p′) and void ratio (e), on the initial soil stiffness.

Opis:
In the method of thermoporometry, the characterization of pore space is done by analysis of thermal effects associated with freezing and melting of a liquid in the pores of the material under investigation. Thermoporometry seems particularly well suited to studies of wet porous samples in cases where the process of drying itself is able to destroy the original microstructure, as is the cohesive soils containing montmorillonite. In the paper, a variant of thermoporometry is given in which the blurred calorimetric peak is processed by use of a stochastic-convolutive analysis. As a result, a "sharp" thermogram of real thermal effects is obtained which can be easily transformed into a pore distribution curve. The preliminary results, obtained for samples of three monoionic montmorillonites at different water contents, indicate a greater resolution, sensitivity and precision than the classical thermoporometry using an unprocessed DSC signal. Phenomena corresponding to swelling have been detected in two individual regions on the differential pore distribution curves. The first is a dense spectrum for pores less than 15 nm. The second is a single peak for pores greater than 15 nm. Between the two regions the distribution decays to zero. Apparently, the point of the single peak maximum depends on the total water content, shifting rightward with increasing w. For the region below 20 nm, a strong effect of the kind of exchangeable cation can be observed. The results suggest swelling in the form with bivalent cations (Ca-montmorillonite) and contraction in the form with monovalent cations (Na- and K-montmorillonite).

Opis:
The paper concerns significance of properly carried out saturation procedure and its role in evaluation of undrained response of heavy preconsolidated cohesive soils. In particular the saturation criteria are addressed which should be fulfilled during saturation of preconsolidated clay specimens of various plasticity. Influence of incomplete saturation on shear strength parameters is briefly characterized. On the basis of experimental data the back pressure method is shown to be the most efficient method in obtaining full saturation in overconsolidated clay of various plasticity. Analysis of the test results made possible to propose full saturation criteria for low, medium and high plasticity clays which are based on reduced value of Skempton’s B parameter.

Artykuł dotyczy kryteriów, jakie powinny być spełnione podczas nasączania próbek różnych gruntów w badaniach trójosiowych. W pracy scharakteryzowano wpływ niepełnego wypełnienia porów gruntu wodą na błędy uzyskiwane w wynikach badań. Przedstawiono metodę ciśnienia wyrównawczego jako najbardziej skuteczny sposób doprowadzenia do pełnego nasycenia gruntu. Zaprezentowano wyniki badań dla prekonsolidowanych gruntów spoistych o różnej spoistości, tj. glin piaszczystych, glin i iłów. The paper presents proposals for the assessment of subsoil stiffness based on results of the seismic cone penetration test. Correlations between penetration parameters and constrained modulus were determined for three genetically different groups of cohesive soils. For the analyzed soil material quantitative estimation was also conducted for the parameter, which determines the relationship between the constrained modulus and initial shear modulus. A marked trend was shown for this parameter with the soil behavior type index used in the classification of soils in the cone penetration test.

Results of investigations of shearing resistance and compressibility of fine-grained cohesive soil from the southern part of the wielkopolskie voivodeship in relation to the increasing moisture content are presented. The analysis of two series of samples, using soil paste for the consistency index of 0.9 and 0.4–0.3 was carried out. The results imply that the increasing moisture content causes a decrease in the angle of shearing resistance and cohesion and is also reflected in the higher compressibility of the soil. It was observed that regardless of the soil consistency, the angle of shearing resistance decreases and the cohesion value and the oedometric modulus of primary (consolidation) and secondary compressibility grows with the increase in the clay fraction.

Opis:
A common practice in civil engineering during earthworks is the usual replacement of cohesive soils (fine soils), excavated during earthworks, with non-cohesive soils (coarse soils). Until recently, such a procedure was dictated primarily by economic and technical reasons. From an economic point of view, the ease of access and therefore low cost of using such soils instead of cohesive soils was crucial. The technical reason is, above all, the ease of compacting fine soils (as opposed to cohesive soils) and well-developed and well-known engineering methods for controlling their compaction. The situation changed radically when the new environmental regulations came into force and enforcement by the inspection authorities began. Currently, soil removed from a construction site according to regulations should be classified as waste. This fact has completely changed the approach of participants in the construction process to the use of local soils, especially cohesive soils (e.g. clays). Their use "on site" has stopped being an expensive option and has become a necessity. This paper presents aspects of the use of lime-improved cohesive soils that can be successfully used on site as excavation backfill. Problems related to the proper preparation of soil-lime composites are described, as well as the results of compaction tests. The paper presents the author's own methodology for selecting the content of quicklime in the soil-lime composite.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the flow coefficient of aggregate for 30 sands and aggregates. The introduction of European standards for the assessment of construction aggregates over 20 years ago introduced a number of new testing methods not previously used in Poland. One of them is the flow coefficient of aggregate, popularly called aggregate angularity. The method of determination is given in the standard PN-EN 933-6:2014. This standard defines the method of determining the index for coarse aggregates with grain sizes between 4 and 20 mm and fine aggregates with grain sizes below 2 mm. This test is particularly important when designing mineral-asphalt mixtures. Aggregate angularity, particularly in fine aggregates, is the main factor influencing the workability of mixtures. The flow time through the apparatus depends on the degree of roundness and form of the grain. The study determined the relationship between the flow coefficient of aggregate and CBR in relation to the uniformity coefficient. This indicator is still considered to be one of the main parameters that affect the suitability of non-cohesive soils in earthworks. It was proven that Ecs is more dependent on CBR than CU.

Opis:
The paper presents theoretical solutions of the consolidation problem with respect to the different conditions of continuous loading and its application. The author introduces modified consolidation parameters and dimensionless parameters characterizing the course of the consolidation process. Therefore it is possible to calculate the theoretical pore water pressure distribution for various loading procedures in continuous loading (CL) consolidation tests occurring in constant rate loading (CRL), constant rate of strain (CRS) or controlled gradient (CG) tests. The calculation results allow presentation of the attributes that differentate CL consolidation and classical incremental loading (IL) consolidation. A new method of calculation cv (coefficient of consolidation) is proposed using theoretical diagrams of porewater pressure distribution and results of laboratory measure ments during the CL test. A comparative analysis of the methods currently used for cv calculation and the new method is presented here. The cv values estimated by means of method referring only to the seepage factor of consolidation, are usually higher than those based on the strain course. Proper projection of the seep age factor of consolidation makes it possible to shorten the time of consolidation tests in accordance with results of many field observations. The methods described herein can be useful in studying physical conditions of sedimentation, glacial geology, early diagenetic process and applied geology.
