Opis:
A convincing number of studies indicating that alkaloids such as chelidonine and sanguinarine together with other secondary metabolites exhibit potent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties prompted us to examine the antimicrobial efficacy of Chelidonium majus L., a representative of the Papaveraceae family, against Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus Rosenbach (ATCC® 29213™) (mecA negative, Oxacillin sensitive, weak β-lactamase producing strain), S. aureus NCTC® 12493™ (mecA positive, Methicillin-resistant, EUCAST QC strain for cefoxitin), Escherichia coli (Migula) Castellani and Chalmers (ATCC® 25922™), E. coli (Migula) Castellani and Chalmers (ATCC® 35218™). In the current work, we decided to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of ethanolic extracts derived from stalks and roots of C. majus, as well as commercial 100% natural fatty celandine oil (Botanica, Russia) against different S. aureus and E. coli strains. Fresh stalks and roots were washed, weighed, crushed, and homogenized in 96% ethanol (in proportion of 1:19, w/w) at room temperature. The extracts were then filtered and investigated for their antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activity was determined using the agar disk diffusion assay. The extracts obtained from roots and stalks of C. majus and commercial natural fatty celandine oil exhibited different antibacterial activities against tested strains. The ethanolic extracts of C. majus revealed weak antibacterial activity against both E. coli (Migula) Castellani and Chalmers (ATCC® 25922™) and E. coli (Migula) Castellani and Chalmers (ATCC® 35218™) strains. The highest antibacterial activity was demonstrated for stalk extracts of C. majus against S. aureus NCTC® 12493™ compared to the control samples. We observed similar trends when measuring the zones of growth inhibition according to S. aureus subsp. aureus Rosenbach (ATCC® 29213™) strain. Since the antimicrobial efficacy of medicinal plants varies according to the accumulation of secondary metabolites (i.e., alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, etc.), it is not surprising that differences in this efficacy have been noted even using samples taken from the same plant but different parts of the plant (stalks, roots). The antimicrobial activity of crude ethanolic extracts obtained from stalks and roots of greater celandine can be attributed to specific compounds or a combination of compounds. The current study lays the foundation for future research to confirm the potential use of C. majus as a candidate for the treatment of infections caused by S. aureus and E. coli in human and veterinary medicine.

Opis:
The World Ocean and, in particular, its resource potential have always had a dramatic effect on the progress and spatial organisation of humanity. Recently, the effect of the sea factor on the economy and the settlement system has increased amid globalisation, geoeconomic changes, increasing geopolitical turbulence, and the growing competition for resources. In this article, I attempt to assess the influence of the sea factor on the socioeconomic geography of the Russian Federation. A country with an extensive coastline and a vast inland area, Russia has territories that are very different in geographical terms. I pay special attention to the post-Soviet changes in the major components of the country’s maritime economy: seaports, fishing industry, offshore production, recreation, etc. Another focus is the assessment of these industries’ impact on the development of the coastal areas. I demonstrate the growing dependence between the maritime economy and the economic development of Russia’s inland regions. I identify the key natural geographic, foreign economy, settlement-related, and geopolitical factors of the coastalisation of the economy, infrastructure, and population, observed in Russia today. This process is taking place in the Baltic, Black, and Caspian Sea areas, as well as in the Arctic and Pacific regions of the country. I conclude that Russia’s integration into the system of multi-dimensional Eurasian partnerships (including the Belt and Road initiative) and the ‘turn to the East’ contribute to both the further ‘marinisation’ of Russian space and the differentiation of coastal zones by the level and rates of socio-economic development.

Opis:
Dredging works in ports and fairways lead to the extraction of large quantities of dredged material, which must be “disposed of.” This indirectly results in interference in the coastal zone. From the point of view of impact on the marine environment, among the most important activities is deposition of dredged material: at sea dumping sites and on artificially nourished seashores. The annual average volume of dredged material extracted as a result of deepening of the Polish open sea ports located on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea is calculated at 0.61 million m3 (years 1948–2015). Out of this volume, less than 69% of the dredged material (from 25 to 80% per year) was applied in shore infilling, and the rest was deposited at sea. This is unsatisfactory. To ensure an effective system of shore protection it is required to increase the volume of sediments intended for artificial shore nourishment, and to reduce the amount of sediment relocated to sea dumping sites, in favour of its practical applications.
Prace czerpalne w portach i torach podejściowych prowadzą do wydobywania dużych ilości urobku, który trzeba „zutylizować”. Skutkuje to pośrednio ingerencją w strefę brzegową.

Opis:
Sediment samples were collected from the coastal area of the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone of Musa Bay. The samples were analyzed to determine the degree of hydrocarbon contamination and identify the sources of PAHs which were evaluated by employing the ratios of specific PAHs compounds and principal component analysis (PCA). The levels of TPH concentration in the studied area were relatively moderate compared to the world-wide chronically oil-contaminated locations. The concentration of total PAHs was lower than those in other parts of the Musa Bay but approached the NOAA sediment quality guideline value.
