Opis:
The significance of distance along the beach-dune transect and different moisture conditions as regards the decay of Zostera marina leaf litter was investigated in simple field experiments in three temperate, medium- to fine-quartz-sediment, sandy beaches of the Gulf of Gdańsk in Poland. 1800 replicate litterbags of freshly stranded Zostera marina leaves were placed in beach sediments at different strata and levels on each of the beaches. The litterbags were sampled after 5, 10, 50, 100 and 150 days in the field and the remaining material was then dried and weighed. Under similar conditions of sediment composition, salinity and wave inundation, ANOVA tests revealed significant differences in breakdown through time and site. Thus there were some differences in the decay process between the low and high beach. In the former, degradation proceeded rapidly in the initial stages and then stabilised, while in the latter it remained linear throughout the study period.Matter loss in each stratum was also seasonally dependent. This may, however, be more closely linked to successional changes in the chemistry and/or microflora of the beach wrack than to its physical breakdown. Differences between organic matter degradation in the high and low beaches may be explained by differences in the moisture regime and nutrient status, and not by differences in the decay processes themselves. Therefore, two decay centres were found in the beach-dune system: the low beach together with the strandline (wrack consumption 12–21 % day−1 in the warm season, and 4–10 % day−1 in the cold season) and the dune (active consumption 2–6 % day−1 in the warm season only).

Opis:
A way of modelling of the net sediment transport rate on a cross-shore profile and the resulting sea bed changes is presented. In the sediment transport computations, a three-layer model with a description of the bedload based on the water-soil mixture theory by Kaczmarek& Ostrowski (1998, 2002) is used. The modelling system is applied to wave-current conditions variable over the cross-shore profile, and determined using the computational frameworkof Szmytkiewicz (2002a, b). The sediment transport module incorporates the asymmetric wave approaches as proposed by Ostrowski (2002). Model simulations have been produced for uniformly sloped and multi-bar initial cross-shore profiles. Some of the model results are compared with the IBW PAN (Institute of Hydroengineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences) field data collected at the Coastal Research Station in Lubiatowo.

Opis:
Two contrasting coastal profile models are applied to three bathymetries including a uniform gradient beach and natural profiles (multi-barred and multi-stepped) obtained from Lubiatowo, Poland and La Barrosa, Spain. The first model, developed at the Institute of Hydro-Engineering of the Polish Academy of Science (IBW PAN) (Poland), couples a quasi-3D model for nearshore hydrodynamics with a quasi-phase resolving sediment transport model which considers transport in the bed load, contact load and outer layers. The second model (PLYMPROF), developed at the University of Plymouth (UK), couples a relatively simple wave transformation model with a new abstracted description of cross-shore sediment transport beneath waves. A variety of model simulations are described, including simple runs with uniform wave forcing (up to 50 days in duration using PLYMPROF) and runs with parameterized wave forcing (wave height and wave period in deep water) for periods with one or two storm events (6-11 days total duration). Both models coped well with the different initial profiles and with uniform and time-varying wave conditions. The results of the simulations suggest that onshore-directed sediment transport in the shoaling and outer surf zones is dominant for the cases considered. Compared to the IBW PAN model, the PLYMPROF model results (using coefficients from a separate study of bar evolution at Duck, USA) show larger offshore-directed transport in the inner surf zone associated with return flow, with the overall sediment transport pattern located considerably closer to the shore. Alteration of a single coefficient in the PLYMPROF model shifts the predicted transport pattern seawards, but also results in enhanced offshore-directed transport. Despite differences in predicted cross-shore sediment transport the two models produced surprisingly similar trends in overall profile evolution suggesting that feedback between existing bathymetry and the sediment transport pattern may exert a major control on profile development. Results also suggested that bar migration patterns cannot be simply related to the occurrence or absence of storm conditions, but rather depend more subtly on the exact placement of wave breaking locations in relation to existing bars. Incorporation of tidal water level variations for La Barrosa produced small changes in model predictions, with tidal migration of the sediment flux pattern suppressing the development of bar morphology in line with the form of the observed profile.

The paper presents the results of studies on the qualitative and quantitative features of the littoral drift at Golden Sands (Bulgaria), carried out jointly by Polish and Bulgarian researchers. The mathematical modelling of physical coastal processes took wave transformation (wave diffraction and refraction; the effects of shoaling and wave breaking) and longshore sediment transport into account. The computations were carried out for the mean statistical annual wave climate, determined on the basis of IO BAS wave data, simulated using the WAM method from long-term Black Sea wind data. The results of sediment transport computations clearly show that its direction off the Golden Sands shore is from north to south.

Two wave theories are applied in calculations of longshore sediment transport rates: the second Stokes approximation and the cnoidal theory. These approaches are used to model sand motion in nearshore locations beyond and within the surf zone. Wave-current interaction in the nearbed layer and bed shear stresses are solved using a momentum integral method, whereas sediment transport is described by a three-layer model encompassing bedload, contact load and suspended load. Computational results for asymmetric waves are compared with the results obtained using linear wave theory and the conventional sediment transport models of Bailard (1981), Bijker (1971) and Van Rijn (1993).

Wake waves produced by fast ferries bring about significant changes in the optical parameters of sea water in the c. 1 m thick near-bottom layer of the coastal areas of Tallinn Bay. The greatest of these changes occur at relatively small depths, but the duration of the influence increases with increasing depth. Rough quantitative estimates suggest that the overall influence of fast ferry traffic in Tallinn Bay may result in an annual loss of the order of several hundred litres of fine sediments from each metre of the coastline.

The sediments of the beaches along the central coast of Tamil Nadu from Pondicherry to Vedaranyam were studied for their textural variation. 108 sediment samples collected from the low-, mid-, and high-tidal zones, as well as the berms and dunes of different beach morpho-units were analysed. The study area was divided into three sectors (northern, central and southern) on the basis of prevailing energy conditions and oceanographic parameters. The poorly sorted, negatively skewed, coarser sediments of the northern sector are indicative of denudational processes taking place there. Medium-to-fine, moderately-to-well sorted, positivesymmetrically skewed sediments dominate the central sector, probably as a result of the influence of palaeo-sediments deposited by rivers from inland as well as by waves and currents from offshore. Fine, poorly sorted, positive-symmetrically skewed sediments dominate the southern sector, highlighting depositional processes. Linear Discriminant Function Analysis (LDF) of the samples indicates a shallow marine environment origin for all the three sectors. These results show that reworked sediments, submerged during the Holocene marine transgression, are being deposited on present-day beaches by waves, currents and rivers in the study area.

Interaction between continental and marine end-members gives rise to the natural biogeochemical processes in Sharm Al-Kharrar, a lagoon in the arid Red Sea region. Twenty-nine surface sediment samples were collected from the area and their mud fraction analysed for grain size, OC, CaCO3, mineralogy and elemental composition. The mud fraction consisted of a mixture of siliciclastic/calcareous materials, dominated by silt size materials and characterised by low OC (average 0.71% ±0.13); CaCO3 varied widely, with an average of 45% ±18. Concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, V and Ba showed a wide range of variation throughout the Sharm. The results were normalised to Al and subjected to cluster analysis in order to examine the relations between the mineralogy and the elemental composition. The contents of Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, Cr, V and Ba appeared to be influenced by the mixing of the two end-members in addition to the physiochemical processes associated with the mixing between episodic freshwater flooding and seawater. Zn was the single element that showed a slight departure from the mixing model.

Opis:
The paper presents a comparative analysis of physical processes occurring at two different coasts, which belong to two different geographic zones, namely a subtropical region exposed to monsoons and typhoons and a region of temperate climate with ice-snowy winter season. The former coast comprises sandy shores nearby Lubiatowo and the Hel Peninsula, located at the south Baltic Sea in Poland. The shore at Lubiatowo is relatively stable in the long run, while the shore along Hel Peninsula is mostly vulnerable to erosion and strongly protected by use of various measures (groins, seawall and artificial beach nourishment). The second site is the eroded (and partly protected by dikes) coast at Hai Hau in the Gulf of Tonkin (the South China Sea, Vietnam). This shore segment is built of mixtures of sandy and cohesive material, comprising both marine sands and river-borne sediments which nourish the coastal zone at the Red River mouth, located northwards of the Hai Hau beach. The present analysis is focused on differences and similarities of hydro- and morphodynamics between the above coastal zones in various time and spatial scales. The analysis shows that regional climatic and environmental conditions, associated with geographical zones, play a key role in dynamic evolution of the coastal regions and necessitate different engineering activities against erosion and flooding.

Natural radioactivity of coastal sediments could provide interesting information on sediment dynamics. Natural radioactivity measurements were performed in two areas of the Adriatic Sea littoral of Albanian cost, in the gulfs of Durres and Vlora, where complex studies were carried out in the framework of the maintenance of existing Durres harbour and the design of a new harbour in Vlora. Dynamic mapping of the gamma total radioactivity at the sea bottom sediment was carried out using a 2" × 2" NaI probe. Radiometric data were converted to lithological map, and the sand and silt distribution configuration was interpreted in terms of sediment transport. The obtained results have shown that the natural radioactivity of sediments provides qualitative data about the sediment dynamics. This cost-effective method is recommended to be used as complementary to other tracer techniques for sediment transport in coastal engineering investigations.

The paper presents new findings concerning motion of water and sediment in the coastal zone of the east part of the Gulf of Gdańsk, from the Vistula River mouth at Świbno (Poland) to Cape Taran (Russia, Kaliningrad Oblast). The presented study deals with spatial variability of parameters of hydrodynamic and lithodynamic processes which have been subject to theoretical modelling. For the considered coastal segment, deep-water wave conditions reconstructed for a 44-year period have been analysed and transformed to the nearshore zone. Next, velocities of wave-driven longshore currents for the mean statistical year have been calculated, along with the longshore sediment transport rates. Regarding the net longshore sand motion, its detected direction is from Cape Taran towards the Vistula Spit. Very high annual rates of longshore sediment transport have been obtained for the coastal segment at Sambian Peninsula. These rates decrease considerably along the Vistula Spit, reaching zero at a distance of about one third of the Polish part of the Spit, measured from its root. At this location, the net longshore sediment transport (resulting from net longshore wave-current impact) reverses from westward to eastward.

Opis:
The paper discusses the notion of a layer of sandy sediments overlying a substratum of cohesive deposits in the coastal zone. This layer of sand is generally more mobile and is therefore conventionally referred to as the dynamic layer. Its parameters are important to coastal lithodynamic and morphodynamic processes caused by waves and currents. On the other hand, the dynamic layer is formed by nearshore hydrodynamic impact. The variability of the features of the dynamic layer on the southern Baltic dune and cliff shores in Poland is analysed on the basis of selected geological data supported by local seismo-acoustic field investigations. It appears that the conventional notion of the dynamic layer makes sense only in specific geomorphologic conditions. In such cases, mostly related to cliff shores, theoretical modelling of sediment transport should take the properties of the dynamic layer into account.
