Opis:
The evaluation of the efficiency of log skidding with a farm tractor in two technical−technological variants by the chronometric method has revealed that for shorter skidding distances (up to about 250 m) and in areas of good passability, the application of hydraulic tongs as auxiliary skidding equipment is more justified than if a cable winch is applied.

Opis:
In this paper the effect of different methods of soil scarification in a clear−cut area were studied. The following soil preparation techniques were applied: the soil cutter, the active soil plough, the traditional method with use of LPz plough, and the manual scarification of soil in circles surrounding the stem of the future young tree. The effect of management of the residual heaps of branches was also tested. Branches were either put in prisms in the original shape or, having been previously chipped, equally distributed over the entire area of the clear−cut. Additional studies focused on the effect of the time of clear−cut execution (winter or summer) on the condition of epigeic carabid communities. The least regressive effect to analysed communities was observed after the application of the point manual soil scarification. The clear−cuts carried out during the winter season, to a greater degree, favours the forest carabid fauna, preserving them in a structure more resembling the forest communities. More distinctive positive effect on the carabids is observed after putting the residual heaps of branches in prisms; the latter gives shelter for the carabid fauna and constitutes the refuge spots for it.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to optimize wood extraction from a clear−cut area to several upper landings located at roads suited for wood haulage in a situation where the room for storing the wood was limited. The optimization process was to divide the clear−cut area into zones, from which the wood assortments should be transported to the different landings, so that the total transportation labour would be minimized. The research was conducted in Oborniki Forest District (western Poland) on a clear−cut area where the harvest of 2027 m³ of wood in four assortments was planned. The optimization method used presented a linear programming problem, which was formulated and solved with the Solver tool, available with a common spreadsheet. The clear−cut area was divided into a number of elementary plots, for which the quantities of the wood to be extracted and distances to the specified landings were determined. Altogether 189 such plots were defined, mostly square in shape and with 20 m long side. Three upper landings for each wood assortment, located at roads accessible to long−distance vehicles were also determined (fig. 1). The minimization of the transport labour needed for the extraction of different wood assortments was set as the criterion for the objective function. The results of the calculations, after putting them on the forest clear−cut area map (fig. 2), provided information about parts of the clear−cut area to which the wood should be extracted to. As it was expected, in the majority of cases, the model directed the wood to the landings, which were the closest, but in case of one assortment, the wood was directed to the landing located a bit further away than to the closest one. The model enabled to minimize the transportation labour spent on wood extraction from the clear−cut area. The calculations did not require any specific applications, enabling users of commonly available spreadsheets, equipped with a Solver tool to perform such calculations.

Opis:
In most cases, mechanical site preparation (MSP) is a precondition if high−quality (natural or artificial) regeneration of forests is to be achieved. However, the measures involved here may differ in terms of the level of intervention of the soil environment, at both the surface and deeper down. The choice of MSP methods should be based on climatic conditions, site type and the species whose renewal is sought, while the effect should improve conditions for the emergence and growth of the young generation of trees, with the influence on the soil environment being limited as far as possible. The research sought to compare physical and chemical features of the soils of the microhabitats created in clear−cut areas as a result of MSP using either an LPz double mould−board forest plough (furrow and ridge), an active plough (furrow and ridge) and a forest mill (belt and beyond the belt) as compared with unscarified soil. Investigated physical features included grain size (content of sand, silt and clay), bulk density and actual moisture, while the chemical ones: pHH2O and pHKCl, exchangeable acidity, total content of N and C and the C/N ratio, P2O5 content and base cations Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Na+. The most invasive MSP method for the soil environment is the active plough, which leaves the ridge exposed to processes of the decomposition of organic matter (and the highest content of N, C, Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+). Equally, this method may pose the greatest threat of mineral components of the soil being leached, with impoverishment of the habitat ensuing. The forest mill in turn offers the least invasive MSP. Most of the physical and chemical features of soil (other than exchangeable acidity and pHH2O and pHKCl) both in the belt areas and beyond them differed little from the those characterising non−scarified soil. Also the analysed features determined for the furrows ploughed by the active or LPz ploughs or the belt prepared using the forest mill did not differ significantly.
