Opis:
The paper discusses acoustic issues of contemporary churches. Church interiors should be designed so as to obtain intelligibility of speech and simultaneously take organ music into account. It is a tough task as acoustic parameters required for speech and organ music are entirely different. Analysis of the issue was carried out on the basis of investigations in five contemporary churches in Poznań. In total, seven interiors were investigated as two of the churches were two-storeyed. The acoustic investigations were conducted by means of an omnidirectional sound source, a SVAN 945A Sound Level Meter and the DIRAC programme. RT, Ts, C80 and C50 were measured. The acoustic parameters were compared with values recommended for churches. The investigations allowed to draw clear conclusions concerning the influence of architecture of the interior on acoustic parameters.

Opis:
The paper discusses acoustic problems in the contemporary Catholic church, and presents a study of the influence of the ceiling structure on acoustics in the interior for two types of ceiling structures, i.e. the truss type and the reinforced concrete one. The investigations involved six contemporary churches: three buildings with a truss type ceiling and three buildings with a reinforced concrete ceiling. The results reveal that in churches with a truss type ceiling, acoustic parameters reach values close to recommendations. In contrast, churches with a concrete ceiling create very unfavourable acoustic conditions. The investigations rendered it possible to calculate the sound absorption coefficient for the truss type cover.

Opis:
The issue of sonic heritage in sacred historic buildings is gaining popularity and becoming a frequent subject of discussions. The Baroque St Joseph Church of Carmelite Fathers, a minor basilica, is, architecturally and culturally, an exceptional place in Poznań, a city located in western Poland. The church is often used as a concert venue. It underwent an acoustic study with the use of a sound source situated in the presbytery and on the pulpit. The aim of this paper is to present results of acoustic investigations and to compare its acoustic properties with other churches. Acoustic parameters acknowledged as primary values used to assess acoustic properties of a religious building were investigated and then compared with recommended values. Placement of the source in two measurement points rendered it possible to carry out speech intelligibility analyses for a variable position of the sound source, and, in effect, enabled functional assessment of the historic pulpit. Thus obtained results were compared with European Baroque churches whose parameters are available in the literature.

Opis:
In parallel with research conducted using conventional methods, a uniform index method for assessing the acoustic quality of Roman Catholic churches has been developed. The latest version of the index method has been created using the index observation matrix of 12 churches which have been rated by means of the single number global index. Assessments of the acoustic quality of any Roman Catholic church, using two calculation models: the Global Acoustic Properties Index (GAP) and the Global Index (GI), are shown in the article. The verification was performed on the example of one church, showing the way of calculating global indices to assess the acoustic quality of a new facility. The next stages in the development of the index method for assessing the acoustic quality of churches were taking into account the audience, using simulation tests and determining the spatial distribution of the single number GAP index in an examined church. An attempt to use the GAP and GI calculation models to assess the acoustic properties of some churches is also shown in the article.

Opis:
Zaprezentowano autorski pomysł ceramicznego systemu modułowego. Projekt wykonano dla konkretnego wnętrza sakralnego w celu poprawy własności akustycznych i wizualnych. W ramach systemu zaprojektowano dwanaście modułów o własnościach akustycznych odpowiednio odbijających, rozpraszających i pochłaniających dźwięk.
The paper presents the authors’ own idea of a module ceramic system. The design was prepared for a specific sacred interior in order to improve acoustic and visual properties. The system includes twelve modules with sound reflective, diffusive and absorptive acoustic properties, respectively. A module ceramic system is a consistent artistic concept which ensures a fluent transition within the system between its modules with different acoustic properties. The character of the designed acoustic system was adjusted to the sacred interior with a flame as its motive. The paper presents the designed system, from acoustic investigations, to the linear design, details of the concept, and preparations of modules to the complete design of the interior.

Opis:
The church of Santa Ana in Moratalaz, Madrid, Spain (1965–1971), is an emblematic work of the architect Miguel Fisac. In his long career include interventions in the religious field, constituting one of the most important contributions to Spanish religious architecture of the last century. This church is a singular place of worship and architecturally significant, in which the acoustics played an important role in the configuration of the spatiality of the church. This paper studies the acoustic behaviour of the church and its relationship with its unique structural, spatial and coating material characteristics. The analysis of the current acoustic conditions, with high reverberation times (up to 6 seconds) and poor intelligibility on the audience, serve as the basis for making an acoustic rehabilitation proposal that contributes to improving the sound conditions of the building for the intended use, without distorting the spatial, formal and material aspects with which the architect conceived the project.

Opis:
The church of Santa Cruz de Oleiros, Spain (1967) shows architect Miguel Fisac’s perception of sacred space after the Second Vatican Council. In this place of worship, the architect responded to the new liturgical guidelines combining geometry and architectural forms with the material of the moment, concrete. However, ordinary religious celebrations reveal acoustic deficiencies for the main use of the building. This fact is corroborated by acoustic measurements in situ. With a methodology that uses simulation techniques for the sound field, the analysis of the current acoustic behaviour of the room will serve as the basis for an acoustic rehabilitation proposal aimed at improving the acoustic conditions and so, the functionality of the church.

Opis:
This paper presents the interior acoustical characterization of the 9,000-seat church of the Holy Trinity in the Sanctuary of Fátima, Portugal, inaugurated in 2007. In situ measurements were held regarding interior sound pressure levels (with and without the HVAC equipment working), NC curves, RASTI (with and without the installed sound system) and reverberation time. The results are presented and commented according to the design values. A comparison is made with other churches in the world, also with a very large volume (for instance the Basilica Mariacka in Gdansk). The measured data are also used to calculate a global index of this church acoustic quality using Engel’s and Kosała's Index Method.

Opis:
Sound and vibrations are often perceived via the auditory and tactile senses simultaneously, e.g., in a car or train. During a rock concert, the body vibrates with the rhythm of the music. Even in a concert hall or a church, sound can excite vibrations in the ground or seats. These vibrations might not be perceived separately because they integrate with the other sensory modalities into one multi-modal perception. This paper discusses the relation between sound and vibration for frequencies up to 1 kHz in an opera house and a church. Therefore, the transfer function between sound pressure and acceleration was measured at different exemplary listening positions. A dodecahedron loudspeaker on the stage was used as a sound source. Accelerometers on the ground, seat and arm rest measured the resulting vibrations. It was found that vibrations were excited over a broad frequency range via airborne sound. The transfer function was measured using various sound pressure levels. Thereby, no dependence on level was found. The acceleration level at the seat corresponds approximately to the sound pressure level and is independent of the receiver position. Stronger differences were measured for vibrations on the ground.
