Opis:
In the writings of St. Augustine, the Latin word cor occurs more than8,000 times, being one of the most important, though ambiguous, terms ofhis anthropology and spirituality. As a synonym for the inner man (homointerior) it encompasses the whole life: affective, intellectual, moral andreligious. In this sense, it is the privileged place for a personal encounterwith God.Analysis of Augustine’s writings reveals a link between the concept ofthe Trinity and indications concerning the spiritual life of man. Reflectionson the “heart” can be put into a kind of triptych: creation “in the imageof God”, enlightenment by Christ, and expansion by the Holy Spirit. Theimpact of God on the human heart should find their completion in a voluntarilyadopted attitude of adoration, humility and love.

In Protestantism, the woman’s place was at home, with her husband and children, the most important function being that of wife and mother. Single women were treated as a certain deviation from the applicable norm. However, according to Protestant principles, every individual should be socially useful, including the so‑called “old maids”. An area where they could prove useful was the Evangelical church and charity. Many women became deacons, sometimes called Protestant nuns, working in Evangelical hospitals and nursing homes, and helping pastors in their pastoral work. Some were active in Protestant charities and were actively involved in parish life. Less wealthy single women could also count on material help from the congregation. It was clearly indicated that the place of “old maids” was to be in the church environment.

W Królestwie Polskim przełomu wieku XIX i XX w dobie wzmożonego rozwoju gospodarczego, przemysłowego i demograficznego nasilały się problemy społeczne: ubóstwo, sieroctwo, cierpienie fizyczne, zagrożenia moralne.
In the Kingdom of Poland, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in the era of intensive economic, industrial and demographic development, social problems increased: poverty, orphanhood, physical suffering, and moral threats. The response to them was above all the activity of charity societies. In the history of charity, the activity of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Suffering was especially noted. The first part of the article presents the characteristics of the social situation of the Kingdom and the diagnosis of social pathologies. In the further part of the article, particular attention has been given to the activities of the Franciscan Sisters of Suffering, whose initiatives and activities constitute an important part of the history of charity at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Kingdom of Poland.

The potato blight that struck Ireland in 1845 led to ineffable suffering that sent shockwaves throughout the Anglosphere. The Irish Famine is deemed to be the first national calamity to attract extensive help and support from all around the world. Even though the Irish did not receive adequate support from the British government, their ordeal was mitigated by private charity. Without the donations from a great number of individuals, the death toll among the famished Irishmen and Irishwomen would have been definitely higher. The greatest and most generous amount of assistance came from the United States. In spite of the fact that the U.S. Congress did not decide to earmark any money for the support of famine-stricken Ireland, the horrors taking place in this part of the British Empire pulled at American citizens’ heartstrings and they contributed munificently to the help of the Irish people. Aiding Ireland was embraced by the American press, which, unlike major British newspapers, lauded private efforts to bring succour to the Irish. Such American newspapers as the Daily National Intelligencer, the New York Herald and the Liberator encouraged their readers to contribute to the relief of Ireland and applauded efforts to help the Irish. The aim of this essay is to argue that the American press, in general, played a significant role in encouraging private charity in the United States towards the Irish at the time of An Gorta Mór and, thus, helped to save many lives.

Opis:
“You set charity in order in me” (Song 2:4, LXX) is one of the most fundamental biblical texts for the concept of the ordo caritatis. The Author seeks to examine how this text was read in the East and West, analysing the commentary of three Greek authors (Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Theodoret of Cyrus), and three Latin authors (Augustine of Hippo, John Cassian and Apponius). There commentaries, he notes, agree with one another for the most part, and refer more or less to Origen’s exegesis of this verse. However, some differences can be noted. The Eastern Fathers, for example, hold that, in the order of charity, the criterion of merit is more important than the criterion of blood relationship; that is to say, the greater love is to be shown to those who have been born in Christ (cf. 1Cor 4:15) over those born of the flesh. Only the Eastern Fathers explore what the ordo caritatis means also in relation to one’s enemies. The Western Fathers, for their part, tend to underline the moral aspect of the ordo caritatis, insofar as upholding that order is virtue, while infringing it is sin. In this regard, a casuistic approach can occur in their commentary more frequently than in those of the Eastern Fathers. The novelty of the commentaries of the Western Fathers is also found in their reflection on the ordo caritatis within the Holy Trinity, as well as the manner in which they expand the embrace of this order to other categories of people: friends, fellow citizens, strangers. Some of the Western Fathers (Apponius) apply the ordo caritatis not only to people but also to works of mercy, while others (Augustine) bring out the aesthetic element in the ordo caritatis, noting that the effect of order of any kind, including the order of charity, is beauty.

Associations of the Ladies of Charity of St Vincent de Paul were established in the Polish lands in the 1850s. One of the first association was founded in Kraków. The aim of this article is to present the activities of the Ladies of Charity and the Steward Maids [Panny Ekonomki] in the years before and during World War I. The members of the association provided the sick poor with emergency care such as making bandages or providing food and other daily necessities. In addition to material assistance, great emphasis was also placed on the religious aspect of the wards’ lives. From the beginning of the 20th century, the Steward Maids concentrated on their work in the infirmary and, during the war, on organising nursing courses.

Opis:
Aelred of Rievaulx, one of the first and foremost representatives of the so called school of charity propagated by the Cistercian order within the monastic theology, can certainly be considered the Cistercian doctor of charity. This suggestion was earlier proposed by contemporary scholars of the doctrine of the English abbot, especially that it was in keeping with the traditional medieval practice of giving the more prominent spiritual authorities the title of the Church doctor, based on their theological accomplishments. It was about formation of the doctrinal bases for the Cistercian theology and a great contribution to this was the work on charity by Aerled, beside his other piece on Christian friendship, which had already earned him the title of „Doctor of Christian friendship”. An analysis of Speculum caritatis by the abbot of Rievaulx presented against the backdrop of the specificity of monastic theology, which it represents, as well as against its structure subjected to the ultimate goal defined by the authority of the great Bernard, support this position. Those special conditions also had an effect on these contemplations, telling to first ponder on the title of Aelred's work, which reveals the specificity of the theology practiced by the abbot. Next, in order to explain the major difficulty in the ascetic character of Christian love, insisted on by St. Bernard, the theme of charity was described in three sections. The criterion for the division follows the work's major idea expressed in the triad of love (amor), greed (cupiditas) and theological love (caritas), which correspond to the three time orders of charity resulting from God's actions of: creation, redemption and rebirth, which, as argued by P. A. Burton, were explored in the three parts of Speculum. This is why the sections of my work describe:− the nature of love in the aspect of creation, reflected in human soul directed toward God, even after a sin;− the difficulty of love, connected to greed, which because of Christ's redemptive cross becomes a sweet yoke of charity for His true followers, and then;− the practical side of Christian love, from the point of view of its object and subject. Attentive reading into and analysis of the work on love by Aelred of Rievaulx presented above shows enormous richness of theological knowledge, which proves theological competence of this then young Cistercian abbot (about 33 years old). It is confirmed with his solid preparation and in depth reflection on the issue of charity, as he himself acknowledged, which he then expressed in the language and monastic form familiar to him, which was then prevalent throughout monasteries. This is perhaps one of but few obstacles, which today make reading his work difficult. His value, however, was recognized from the very beginning by the great Bernard of Clairvaux, followed by the entire medieval tradition which left behind over a dozen of his manuscripts. We can only be grateful to Bernard to have nudged the young theologian to compose this excellent work. The depth and richness of its contents certainly prove his own experience in the field of God's charity, or even its mystical implications, even more so, since monastic theology considered experience as one of the sources of theological wisdom, which was about presenting apractical way to reach God. It might then come as a surprise for such a relatively young theologian to posses this kind of highly sensitive spiritual life. It must have amazed Bernard himself. Maybe, it is time to include Aelread in the ranks of Cistercian mystics. On account of his work, Aelred's influence has already been recognized by contemporary scholars. Worth mentioning here are: exceptional role of feelings in spiritual pursuit of God and relationships with others; aforementioned „little treatise on affections”; teaching about sabbath as the ultimate rest in God's love – the source and purpose of perfection for all creation, including the man, who in this sabbath delights in complete unity with God; doctrine of three sabbaths associated with forms of love towards: God, neighbor and oneself, experienced in this life through contemplation of infinite God; ascetic character of love with its sense in the sweet cross of Christ; the role of humanity of Jesus Christ on the way to spiritual growth, and so one. Certainly a number of these components are a reflection of the Augustinian theological environment prominent at that time, but Aelred added them a unique color, or even originality. Considering the above, we can see the English Abbot of Rievaulx as a Cistercian doctor of charity.

Smallholder farmers face multiple constraints in accessing input markets. This study seeks to understand the dynamics that influence input markets in northern Ghana and the opportunities that exist for smallholder farmers to increase their productivity and welfare. Using a random sample of 448 households, the study applied the probit and non-parametric methods in identifying the factors that influence farmers’ access to input markets and the key constraints faced by them. The results show that access to extension services, access to finance, distance to the nearest input market, and input source are significant factors that would be likely to influence farmers’ access to input markets. Lack of finance, poor road network, and low prices of output are the main critically ranked constraints limiting farmers’ access to input markets. Policy initiatives should be geared toward strengthening extension service delivery, farmer education on inputs, improving feeder roads, and encouraging private sector participation in input markets. Available opportunities to leverage on and improve farmers’ access to input markets include the governments’ input subsidy programmes, existing large-scale agricultural projects, private agricultural companies with contract farming models, and extensive network of input dealers and aggregators in the communities. These findings are relevant for farmers, input dealers and policy makers working to improve farmers’ access to input markets.

Nonetheless, an essential feature of the life and activity of Adam Chmielowski, St. Brother Albert, was his ministry amongst the poor. St. Brother Albert has, through his works of charity, inscribed his name in his era, which he overwhelmed to such an extent that St. John Paul II referred to him as “A brother of our God”.

Atheism as a practice of life is becoming increasingly popular in modern western societies. A life devoid of reference to religious practices is becoming not so much an element of rebellion against the established religious traditions, but more of a certain obviousness that no one contests. Hence the question arises, how is the Church to function in such an environment and how to preach the Gospel? Pope Francis, and whim him modern theology, is increasingly emphasizing the role of the Church as a servant who, in humility and social engagement and through work of mercy, can preach the Gospel to modern man. The Church should proclaim the Gospel not through speculative theology, but through engagement with the poors and most need.
