Opis:
This research emphasizes eloquently on membrane technology for treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) as it is the Malaysia’s largest and most important agro based industry. Findings established significant quality improvement with an efficient recovery of water from palm oil mill via innovative membrane application. Conventional bio-methods, whilst adhering to the Department of Environment’s (DOE) discharge regulations, produces brownish liquid which pales in comparison to the crystal clear water obtained through membrane treatment. The pre-treatment process consists of coagulation-flocculation using green environmental coagulant bases such as Moringa oleifera (MO) seeds. The ultrafiltration polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis were vital for the membrane processes. The system gave 99% suspended solids reduction in suspended solid and 78% of water present was successfully recovered. This technology guarantees water recovery with drinking water quality; meeting the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standard or could be recycled into the plant with sludge utilization for palm oil estates, thus enabling the concept of zero discharge to be executed in the industries. In addition, green and healthy antioxidants such as oil and beta-carotene can be recovered from POME further demonstrate. Silica gel showed better performance in separation of carotenes from oil at temperature 40°C using adsorption chromatography with 1154.55 ppm. The attractiveness of this technology, enabling the utilization of reuse of agricultural waste into potentially value added products.

Opis:
The public concern over sediment contamination brought on by mining operations, excessive use of chemical fertilisers or pesticides, industrial, agricultural, and municipal effluent, is increasing. Dredging is a more expensive treatment option than in situ capping of polluted sediment for immobilising pollutants in sediments on site. In order to stop the release of Cr and Cu from chemically contaminated sediments, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of utilising active capping materials such as bentonite (B), kaolin (K), and a 1:1 combination of bentonite and kaolin (BK) as capping materials. In a 90-day laboratory experiment carried out in glass tanks with a 1 cm thickness cover of capped material plus sand spread over the polluted sediment, the efficacy of B, K, and BK in inhibiting trace metal leachability was examined. The findings demonstrated that B and BK decreased the ability of sediments to leach Cr and Cu. The results suggest that BK and B should be considered as a suitable active material for capping treatment of polluted sediment sites because of their high Cu and Cr trapping. According to an analysis of adsorption kinetics, chemisorption was the adsorption process. The outcomes of this study demonstrated the potential for using kaolin, a bentonite-kaolin clay mixture covered with sand, and bentonite as capping materials for the in-situ treatment of Cr and Cu polluted coastal sediments.

Healthy Worker Effect
Opis:
Objective: The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) became operational in 1952; it is located in the western part of Kentucky. We conducted a mortality study for adverse health effects that workers may have suffered while working at the plant, including exposures to chemicals. Materials and Methods: We studied a cohort of 6820 workers at the PGDP for the period 1953 to 2003; there were a total of 1672 deaths to cohort members. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a specific concern for this workforce; exposure to TCE occurred primarily in departments that clean the process equipment. The Life Table Analysis System (LTAS) program developed by NIOSH was used to calculate the standardized mortality ratios for the worker cohort and standardized rate ratio relative to exposure to TCE (the U.S. population is the referent for ageadjustment). LTAS calculated a significantly low overall SMR for these workers of 0.76 (95% CI: 0.72–0.79). A further review of three major cancers of interest to Kentucky produced significantly low SMR for trachea, bronchus, lung cancer (0.75, 95% CI: 0.72–0.79) and high SMR for Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) (1.49, 95% CI: 1.02–2.10). Results: No significant SMR was observed for leukemia and no significant SRRs were observed for any disease. Both the leukemia and lung cancer results were examined and determined to reflect regional mortality patterns. However, the Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma finding suggests a curious amplification when living cases are included with the mortality experience. Conclusions: Further examination is recommended of this recurrent finding from all three U.S. Gaseous Diffusion plants.

Opis:
The army of Batu Khan’s 1241 invasion of Central and Eastern Europe was the first, highly unfortunate encounter between Poland and the Mongol empire. The defeat at Legnica, the death of Prince Henry the Pious, and the collapse of his line’s reign in the Duchy of Silesia not only delayed the unification of Poland by decades, but in practice it also eliminated the Silesian Piasts from effective competition for the future Polish union. It was only the death of Ögedei Khan that forced Batu Khan to return with his army to Mongolia and that saved Poland and Hungary from a prolonged enslavement that was the fate of Ruthenian duchies. The subsequent Mongol invasions of Poland at the turn of 1260 and 1288 only deepened the process of economic decline and destruction of Poland. The defeat suffered by the Mongols in the battles with the Egyptian Mamluks and the collapse of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1291 made the West lose interest in establishing political relations with the Mongols. In Eastern Europe, the western domain of the Mongol Empire, the so-called Golden Horde, grew in strength, and began playing a significant role in the political life of the entire region. The peak of its power was in the first half of the fourteenth century during the reign of Öz Beg and Jani Beg khans. From the second half of the fourteenth century faltering of the Golden Horde began. In the fifteenth century it was transformed into the so-called Great Horde. The Grand Prince Ivan III of Muscovy’s Great Stand on the Ugra River against Khan Akhmat’s Great Horde in 1480 was a Muscovite triumph. Poland, however, lost one of its few allies in the east. The Polish King Alexander Jagiellon’s failure in 1502 to support the last Khan of the Great Horde, Shah-Akhmad, made way for the destruction of the Great Horde by Ivan III’s ally, the ruler of the Crimean Khanate, Meñli I Giray. The fall of the Great Horde meant a symbolic end of shared history between Poland and Mongolia, which had begun with the invasion Mongol in 1241. For Russia, it was the final confirmation of its dropping its sovereignty to the Tatars. For the Crimean Khanate, which de facto broke off previous relations with the former Mongol empire by destroying the Great Horde, meant, however, that it become part of a new, emerging political and economic governance in Eastern Europe.

This study investigated the effects of user factors and cognitive sign features on the guessability of mine safety signs. Sixty naive participants guessed the meanings and rated the cognitive sign features of 42 Mainland Chinese mine safety signs. The results showed that some user factors were significant predictors of guessing performance, while some were not. As expected, guessability scores varied significantly with the cognitive sign features of familiarity, concreteness, simplicity, meaningfulness and semantic closeness. The findings emphasize the need to create awareness of the importance of mine safety and promote understanding of mine safety sign meanings amongst people in their work environments. To design more user-friendly mine safety signs, industrial designers should develop and evaluate signs with consideration of the significant user factors and the 5 sign features tested here.

Opis:
This study aims to explore different causes for the mistranslation of legal terminology in international agreements that are enforced through domestic legislation, and attempt to provide some solutions. It is said that legal training will help legal translators to render terminology correctly. This should be held true because many legal terms from different legal systems are ‘false friends’, in that even a well-trained lawyer may need to undertake extensive legal and linguistic research to render them in another language or legal system. This study, by use of a comparison of several translated legal terms from People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan, shows that besides the cause of ‘legal knowledge’, the disparities between international law and national law and different legal traditions can also lead to an improper transfer of legal terminology. Examples of these terms are “Copyright piracy” (Daoban 盗版 vs. qinhai zhuzuoquan 侵害著作权), “Good Faith” (Chengshi shouxin 诚实守信 vs. shanyi 善意), and “Inventive Step” (Famingxing de buzhou 发明性的步骤 vs. jinbuxing 进步性). In order to enhance translators’ legal knowledge, it is proposed that they be presented with some substantive laws together with simple illustrations of their structures. Translators should crosscheck their translations against a wide range of sources at work.

In a discrete Lotka-Volterra model, the set of points where a population remains unchanged over one generation is a hyperplane. Examining the relative position of these hyperplanes, we give sufficient conditions for a groupof species to drive another species to extinction. Further using these hyperplanes, we find necessary and sufficient conditions where every w-limit point of the model has at least one species missing. Building on the workof Hofbauer et al. (1987) involving permanence, we obtain a sufficient condition for one or more species to persist. Additionally, in the presence of extinction occurring, we take these persistence results and the previously mentioned extinction results and extend them to subsystems of the full model. Finally, we combine the ideas of persistence and weak extinctionto obtain another extinction result.

Opis:
Horseshoe crabs have survived until Holocene, but their persistence beyond the Anthropocene is challenged by drastic environment changes that entail impoverishments and the resultant unusual growth sizes. Previously, allometry via morphometric ratio was introduced to classify horseshoe crabs into normal-abnormal growth. However, the descriptive size and weight analysis indicated a considerable portion of Tachypleus gigas with normal allometry. This error was caused by the median sorting of values. Therefore, the same data was treated with correlation before generating a linear equation. By being sexual dimorphs, these arthropods actually have gender-specific morphology indicators which could generate a functional allometry. Since the assessed arthropods were mature, the 19 % yield of smaller female T. gigas was possibly due to degradation effects from poor diets or stress. Yet, for this population, an added risk was female-only harvest. Perhaps, close sizing to male counterparts could be perceived a survival strategy by the female T. gigas. More evidence is needed to strengthen this opinion but for now, this assessment method is novel for accurate allometry assessments in the species with sexual dimorphism. Overall, capture fisheries could have negative impacts and when made severe by sex-specific harvest, the unaccounted practices could collapse sustaining populations.
