The continuous drive towards electrified propulsion systems has been imposing ever more demanding performance and cost targets for the future power electronics, machines and drives (PEMDs). This is particularly evident when exploring various technology road mapping documents both for automotive and aerospace industries, e.g. Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) UK, Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) UK, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) USA and others. In that context, a significant improvement of the specific performance and cost measures, e.g. power density increase by a factor of 10 or more and/or cost per power unit reduction by 50% or better, is forecasted for the next 5 to 15 years. However, the existing PEMD solutions are already at their technological limits to some degree. Consequently, meeting the performance and cost step change would require a considerable development effort. This paper is focused on electrical machines and their thermal management, which has been recognised as one of key enabling factors for delivering high specific output solutions. The challenges associated with heat removal in electrical machines are discussed in detail, alongside with new concepts of thermal management systems. Several examples from the available literature are presented. These include manufacturing techniques, new materials and novel integrated designs in application to electrical machines.

In this article we explore and discuss the benefits of and the challenges that arise when using qualitative methods to conduct research internationally. We firstly discuss the relationship that writers of qualitative studies have with their readers and the implications of this for writing style. This is then followed by an overview of different aspects of data collection design. Within this section we discuss research that we have conducted, as part of a variety of international projects, using two qualitative approaches: systematic documentary research and interview. We then focus on using interview as a research method. This discussion regarding using interviews is divided into two chapters. Firstly, we discuss issues of access and sampling, then the interview itself and the analysis of interview data. The final sections involve a discussion of ways in which validity and reliability can be contextualised within qualitative studies, and also a discussion on generalisability and the possibility of theory generation. We conclude with sections on ethics and possible future directions for international qualitative studies into teacher education.

Environmental phenomena have a major impact on our daily lives. These include changes affecting the sources of life such as in the waters and air of our world, which have been degraded in purity. The term ‘smart environment’ is defined as a technology that provides many facilities and solutions for many environmental application issues related to water quality and health, air pollution, weather, radiation monitoring, waste management, natural disaster, and many other environment indicators. Smart environment sensors integrated with ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) technology can provide a new concept in tracking, sensing and monitoring objects of environment. This can provide potential benefits leading up to the possibility of achieving a green world and a sustainable lifestyle. IoT allows environmental sensors to connect with other systems such smart phones through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to send enormous amounts of data to the network and can allow us to have a better understanding of our surroundings and find suitable solutions for today environmental problems. In this review article, we will provide a brief conception of environment areas of study based on IoT technology and discuss the justification behind using IoT in the field of environmental studies. Moreover, we will investigate many proposed applications of environmental research based upon IoT.

Artykuł koncentruje się na wybranych problemach, jakie pojawiają się obecnie i mieszczą w ramach takich idei jak: „przemysł 4.0” i „społeczeństwo 5.0”, a mianowicie na zagadnieniach antropologicznych. Zmiany w relacjach pomiędzy człowiekiem a techniką oparte na zaufaniu prowadzą jednak do zwiększenia roli czynnika technicznego w tych relacjach. Inne aspekty analizowanych przemian dotyczą nowych wymogów odpowiedzialności i zmian dotyczących podmiotowości człowieka i jego racjonalności. Przyszłość człowieka jawi się jako obszar niepewności związanej między innymi z warunkami funkcjonowania i życia w porządku świata postcyfrowego.
The article focuses on selected problems which have now appeared and fall under the ideas “industry 4.0” and “society 5.0”, namely on anthropological issues. Changes in the relationships between man and technology based on trust lead to an increase of the role of the technological factor in these relations. Other aspects of the analyzed changes concern the new requirements of the responsibility and changes of human subjectivity and rationality. The future of man appears to be an area of uncertainty related to inter alia the conditions of functioning and living in the order of the post-digital world.

The aim of this article is to examine two treaties which are often presented by scholars as potential models for a maritime regime in the South China Sea, namely the Svalbard Treaty and the Antarctic Treaty System. The work concludes that even though both of the treaties have resolved equally complex territorial disputes, their importance as a role model for the SCS is limited due to the unique political condition in the Asia-Pacific. However, the solutions within the sphere of environmental protection and the structure of decision-making institutions developed by the abovementioned treaties present a valuable lesson and a potential example for the countries involved in the South China Sea dispute to emulate. The article argues that cooperation within environmental protection and fisheries management, as a low-profile endeavour, is easier to be put into practice than the joint development of highly contested hydrocarbon resources of the SCS. Furthermore, it can potentially lay foundation for the future high profile collaboration. The paper also presents a model of a maritime regime for the South China Sea.
Целью данной статьи является изучение двух договоров, которые часто пред- ставляются учеными в качестве потенциальных моделей морского режима в Юж- но-Китайском море, а именно Договора о Шпицбергене и Системы Договора об Антарктике. В работе делается вывод о том, что хотя оба договора разрешили одинаково сложные территориальные споры, их важность в качестве образца для подражания для СКС ограничена из-за уникальных политических условий в Азиатско-Тихоокеанском регионе. Однако решения в области защиты окружа- ющей среды и структуры институтов принятия решений, разработанные в рамках вышеупомянутых договоров, представляют собой ценный урок и потенциальный пример для подражания странам, вовлеченным в спор вокруг Южно-Китайского моря. В статье утверждается, что сотрудничество в области охраны окружающей среды и управления рыболовством, как скромное мероприятие, легче реализовать на практике, чем совместная разработка весьма спорных углеводородных ресурсов Южно-Китайского моря. Более того, это потенциально может заложить основу для будущего сотрудничества на высоком уровне. В статье также представлена модель морского режима Южно-Китайского моря.

There are several papers available addressing the challenges for Future Internet that result from socio-economic aspects; such challenges must be obviously taken into account when constructing and developing Future Internet. This paper, however, takes an opposite view that from the dynamics of the development of Internet itself (or Future Internet) result challenges for the socio-economic development and even for the paradigm of understanding economy; such challenges must be taken into account first, then - in a feedback loop -lead to the modification of socio-economic challenges for Future Internet. This change of perspective is necessary because the analysis of socio-economic challenges for Future Internet is typically based on a classical paradigm of equilibrium economics. While useful, this paradigm is limited and has been shown incomplete, e.g., by the recent world-wide financial and economic crisis. This paper shows that the informational revolution - including but not limited to the development of Internet - has already changed the behavior of main socio-economic agents as well as of economic markets and our understanding of them; thus, new perspectives are needed. The paper also shows that a useful perspective is that not of expected benefits from Future Internet - there are many such benefits and they will surely motivate enough economic development of Future Internet - but of socio-economic threats resulting from the dynamic development of the Internet. There are several such threats and conflicts that can be foreseen: the conflict between corporatization and governance; the conflict between direct and indirect limits to freedom; the trend to- wards elitarism inherent in Internet development dynamics versus democracy; the threat of network and computer domination over people, etc. Some of such threats and conflicts are discussed in the paper.

Głównym celem artykułu było wskazanie wyzwań, jakie w najbliższych latach staną na drodze rozwoju polskiego rolnictwa. Przedstawiono uwarunkowania rozwoju rolnictwa w świetle dokumentów strategicznych ONZ i Unii Europejskiej, skutkujące kształtem WPR na aktualny okres programowania. Wskazano na potrzebę podjęcia pilnych działań w obszarze badań i rozwoju ukierunkowanych na wypracowanie nowoczesnych rozwiązań systemowych w sferze instytucjonalnej, włącznie z systemem państwowego doradztwa rolniczego. Ponadto zaprezentowano propozycje doskonalenia polskiego AKIS w układzie sieciowym oraz utworzenie Platformy AKIS składającej się z przedstawicieli partnerów systemu, która byłaby instytucjonalną formą kreowania i uzgadniania zasad współpracy między uczestnikami AKIS. Podczas tych uzgodnień mogłyby być też wypracowywane stanowiska i postulaty względem władz ustawodawczych i wykonawczych odnośnie innowacyjnych potrzeb sektora rolnego.
The main goal of the article was to indicate the challenges that will stand in the way of the development of Polish agriculture in the coming years. The need to take urgent actions in the area of research and development aimed at developing modern systemic solutions in the institutional sphere, including the state agricultural advisory system, was indicated. The conditions for the development of agriculture in the light of strategic documents of the UN and the European Union were presented, resulting in the shape of the CAP for the current programming period. In addition, proposals were presented for improving the Polish AKIS in a network system and creating an AKIS Platform consisting of representatives of system partners, which would be an institutional form for creating and agreeing on the principles of cooperation between AKIS participants. During these arrangements, positions and demands could also be developed for the legislative and executive authorities regarding the innovative needs of the agriculture sector.

W artykule przedstawione są w ujęciu retrospektywnym historia i modele mieszkalnictwa społecznego w Europie Zachodniej. Nakreślone są jego podstawowe problemy w państwach transformacji systemowej. Postrzeganie tego mieszkalnictwa z perspektywy Unii Europejskiej dopełnia niezbyt jasną jego sytuację i przyszłość. Wnioski służą sygnalizowaniu społecznych wyzwań strukturalnych w tym zakresie.
The article presents, in a retrospective approach, the history and models of social housing in the Western Europe. Also, it outlines basic problems of social housing in those European states, which have undergone transformations of their political systems. Viewing that type of housing from the EU perspective adds to its none too very clear situation and future. Conclusions aim at drawing attention to social structural challenges in that field.

Family businesses are an important part of every economy. They are characterized by long traditions that combine aspects such as trust and reliability, as well as by features such as innovativeness, foresight, long-term focus and flexibility. Both family businesses and the entrepreneurial families themselves do have some weaknesses and face current challenges like digitization, internationalization and demographic change. These issues must be kept in mind in order to constantly develop appropriate solutions that will help them survive and thrive in the market. Moreover, the high relevance of the family in a family business is associated with opportunities – for example, when a family strategy with clear values, roles and goals is defined, and a so called family business governance is developed.

Opis:
Meeting the educational needs of students currently requires moving toward collaborative electronic and mobile learning systems that parallel the vision of Web 2.0. However, factors such as data freedom, brokerage, interconnectivity and the Internet of Things add to a vision for Web 3.0 that will require consideration in the development of future campus-based, distance and vocational study. So, education can, in future, be expected to require deeper technological connections between students and learning environments, based on significant use of sensors, mobile devices, cloud computing and rich-media visualization. Therefore, we discuss challenges associated with such a futuristic campus context, including how learning materials and environments may be enriched by it. As an additional novel element the potential for much of that enrichment to be realized through development by students, within the curriculum, is also considered. We will conclude that much of the technology required to embrace the vision of Web 3.0 in education already exists, but that further research in key areas is required for the concept to achieve its full potential.

The importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in nowadays business reality is constantly growing thanks to many factors, including the important promotional effort at all possible authorities levels and increasing educational effort of universities and in particular of business schools. Since there is no commonly accepted guideline/curriculum/content of social responsibility (SR) education, business schools at higher education institutions (HEIs) start to develop their own approaches on SR education.This paper aims to present the general background of CSR education with particular emphasis on its enhancements existing in EU and other countries or continents. Its ambition is also to offer a picture of CSR related educational activities launched by Polish HEIs and to present its evaluation by students. The first goal will be accomplished with the literature study and the review of initiatives publicly disclosed by the authorities, NGOs and finally by HEIs themselves. The second ambition will be completed with the outcomes of the survey conducted by the author in Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT), Faculty of Management and Economics (FME). The conclusions of this work allow to propose recommendations to be implemented in the SR education in the future.

Globalization and commercialization of higher education systems and social acceleration causes the changes in an academic career. Some policymakers and scholars perceive the neoliberal transformation and commercialization of higher education as a necessity and advantage, while the others, especially from the humanities and social sciences, recognize them as disruptions of a traditional university system. I would like to make an attempt to reconstruct the discussion of the Western scholars on neoliberal changes in academia. Moreover, I will point out the main dilemmas and controversies which occurred in the professional practice of scholars that include: the balance and disproportions between teaching and research; ‘publish or perish’ syndrome, specialization and fragmentation of knowledge and science; maintaining quality and dealing with bureaucracy in higher education system.

During over the last few years, the world of communication has been changing rapidly. The Internet and modern information technologies have led to the increasing popularity and using social media in different areas: in communication, new markets, new businesses, advertising and promotion companies. The main purpose of this article is to show the possibility of using social media in recruitment process and to present the impact of social media on Human Resource Management. Over 150 respondents, who participated in the research, help us explore the risks and benefits of using social media by employees for the organization’s reputation, and deliver suggestions for Human Resource Management policy.
Szybko rozwijające się nowoczesne technologie informacyjne doprowadziły do coraz to większej popularności mediów społecznych w różnych dziedzinach życia: komunikacji, marketingu, tworzenia nowych rynków pracy, promocji i reklamy. Głównym celem artykułu jest pokazanie możliwości wykorzystania mediów społecznościowych w procesie rekrutacji. Przedstawiono wpływ mediów społecznościowych na zarządzanie zasobami ludzkimi. Badanie ankietowe przeprowadzone na próbie 150 respondentów, pozwoliło na przedstawienie zagrożeń i korzyści wynikających z komunikowania się pracowników i pracodawców za pomocą mediów społecznościowych. Na koniec podano zasady bezpiecznego i świadomego korzystania z tej formy komunikacji oraz określono istotne wskazówki dla polityki zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi w organizacjach.

Tematem, który w trzecim kwartale 2021 r. zdominował debatę dotyczącą bezpieczeństwa globalnego było wycofanie wojsk amerykańskich z Afganistanu oraz wydarzenia, które były tego konsekwencją. Analizom tego co się wydarzyło, które wynikają z ludzkiej ciekawości, towarzyszy chęć wyobrażenia sobie niepewnej przyszłości, czego źródłem jest już nie tylko bezinteresowna ciekawość, ale często także konieczność podjęcia działań w obliczu narastających zagrożeń. Określenia „bieżące” oraz „przyszłe” zawarte w tytule artykułu stanowią wyznacznik sformułowania celu badawczego. Po pierwsze dokonana więc została charakterystyka wybranych aspektów sytuacji wewnętrznej Afganistanu przy wykorzystaniu analizy systemowej. Po drugie podjęto próbę predykcji dalszego rozwoju wydarzeń w związku z przejęciem władzy przez talibów. Prezentowane wnioski są konsekwencją interdyscyplinarnych, heurystycznych i intersubiektywnych badań.
The topic that dominated the global security debate in the third quarter of 2021 was the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and the events that followed. Analyses of what happened, which stem from human curiosity, are accompanied by a desire to imagine an uncertain future, the source of which is no longer just disinterested curiosity, but often the need to take action in the face of growing threats. The terms "current" and "future" contained in the title of the article determine the formulation of the research objective. Firstly, selected aspects of internal situation in Afghanistan were characterized using the systems analysis. Secondly, an attempt was made to predict the further development of events in connection with the seizure of power by the Taliban. The presented conclusions are the consequence of interdisciplinary, heuristic and intersubjective research.

  In today’s world the valuation of the company as a measure of the efficiency of its operations is of great importance for the functioning of the future. Knowledge about how much the company is worth is of fundamental importance at the time of a commercial transaction, as well as the possibility of its business.   Presents the objectives of the valuation of the company and company specific life stages at which such a valuation is required. In the paper the classification of valuation methods used in modern enterprises. On this basis, the methodology of the valuation by the concept of MDI–R (Assets, Income, Intellectual Capital – Market), which measures the effectiveness of a broad spectrum of activities of the company and in accordance with the current characteristics of a goodvaluation seeks to determine the fair value of the company. At the same time an attempt to draw attention to the risks arising from modern methods of business valuation and its challenges in the future.

The article aims to identify the challenges facing the command system in the context of changes that will shape future military operations. For the presentation of the cognitive results, the analysis of documents was used as well as the results of research conducted with the aid of a diagnostic survey, an interview method, as well as non-standardized observation. The structure of the article covers four main issues. The first one presents the relationship between the terms "directing – management – command" in the context of the deliberations made. The second topic focuses on the characteristics of future operations that define the challenges for command. The third one, on the other hand, explains the matters related to the modification of the command in future military operations. The issue complementing all the considerations is an attempt to resolve the problem of recommendations for the command system in the wars of the future. The content of the article uses the conclusions from the experience gained during the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja wyzwań przed jakimi stoi system dowodzenia w kontekście zmian kształtujących przyszłe operacje militarne. Do prezentacji wyników poznawczych wykorzystano metodę analizy badania dokumentów oraz wyniki badań prowadzonych za pomocą sondażu diagnostycznego, metodą wywiadu, jak również obserwacji niestandaryzowanej. Struktura artykułu obejmuje cztery zasadnicze zagadnienia. W pierwszym przedstawiono relacje terminów „kierowanie – zarządzanie – dowodzenie” w kontekście czynionych rozważań. Drugie zagadnienie koncentruje się na charakterystyce operacji przyszłości określających wyzwania dla dowodzenia. Natomiast trzecie zagadnienie wyjaśnia kwestie związane z modyfikacją dowodzenia w przyszłych operacjach militarnych. Zagadnieniem dopełniającym całość prowadzonych rozważań jest próba rozstrzygnięcia kwestii rekomendacji dla systemu dowodzenia w wojnach przyszłości. W treści artykułu wykorzystano wnioski z doświadczeń uzyskane w czasie konfliktów militarnych w Iraku i w Afganistanie.

W erze rozwijającego się metaverse integracja systemów płatniczych staje się kluczowym elementem umożliwiającym płynne i bezpieczne transakcje w wirtualnych środowiskach. Prezentowany artykuł skupia się na analizie obecnych rozwiązań płatniczych w metawersum, wyzwaniach w ich obszarze oraz na perspektywach na przyszłość. W pierwszej części opracowania omówiono istniejące systemy płatnicze dostępne w metarzeczywistości, w tym kryptowaluty, tokeny oraz tradycyjne metody płatności. Podkreślono ich wpływ na dynamikę transakcji oraz na postrzeganie wartości w wirtualnym świecie. Następnie przedstawiono główne wyzwania związane z integracją tych systemów, takie jak bezpieczeństwo danych, weryfikacja tożsamości, skomplikowane procesy wymiany walut (kryptowalut oraz tradycyjnych) oraz problemy z interoperacyjnością między różnymi wirtualnymi środowiskami. W końcowej części artykułu skupiono się na przyszłości e-commerce w metaverse. Rozważono, jakie innowacje technologiczne mogą wpłynąć na kształt i charakter handlu w wirtualnym świecie oraz jakie możliwości stoją przed przedsiębiorcami i deweloperami w kontekście tworzenia nowych modeli biznesowych. Wnioski z publikacji podkreślają znaczenie odpowiedniej integracji systemów płatniczych w metaverse dla osiągnięcia trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju e-commerce w wirtualnych środowiskach. Zauważono potrzebę dalszych badań i innowacji w tej dziedzinie, aby sprostać rosnącym oczekiwaniom użytkowników i zapewnić im bezpieczne i wydajne metody płatności.
In the era of the burgeoning metaverse, integration of payment systems is becoming a key element to enable seamless and secure transactions in virtual environments. This paper focuses on an analysis of current payment solutions in the metaverse, as well as their challenges and future prospects. The first part of the paper discusses existing payment systems available in the metaverse, including cryptocurrencies, tokens and traditional payment methods, highlighting their impact on transaction dynamics and the perception of value in the virtual world. The main challenges of integrating these systems are then presented, such as data security, identity verification, complex processes for exchanging currencies (crypto and traditional), and interoperability issues between different virtual environments. In the final part of the paper we focus on the future of e-commerce in the metaverse, considering what technological innovations may affect the shape and nature of commerce in the virtual world, and what opportunities lie ahead for entrepreneurs and developers in terms of creating new business models. The conclusions of this publication highlight the importance of proper integration of payment systems in the metaverse for achieving sustainable and balanced e-commerce development in virtual environments, as well as underscoring the need for further research and innovation in this field to meet users' growing expectations and provide them with secure and efficient payment methods.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a muscle disease caused by mutation in the gene that encodes the cytoskeletal protein dystrophin. It is inherited in an X-linked recessive fashion. A number of therapies are continuously being developed to slow down the progression of the disease and increase patients’ life expectancy. Steroid use in Duchenne muscular dystrophy is associated with a lower mortality rate (hazard ratio = 0.24; 95% CI = 0.07–0.91; p = 0.0351). Although recent studies have concluded that prolonged steroid use is associated with short stature and overweight, a meta-analysis of 12 studies has shown that steroids can increase strength, muscle function, and quality of life. Restoration of dystrophin gene expression is the basis of genetically engineered therapies. Potential therapies of this type include exon skipping, the use of recombinant adenoassociated virus which delivers mini-dystrophin, and surrogate gene transfer. In their development, the common challenges are associated with the size of gene product and the origin of dystrophin gene expression. Stem cells are promising for future therapy. Regardless of the challenges and controversies associated with stem cells, several clinical trials show an increase of  muscle strength in patients who have received such therapies.
Dystrofia mięśniowa Duchenne’a jest chorobą dziedziczoną w sposób recesywny, sprzężoną z chromosomem X, spowodowaną mutacjami w genie DMD kodującym białko dystrofinę. Obecnie opracowywane terapie mają na celu spowolnienie progresji choroby oraz przedłużenie przeżycia pacjentów. Leczenie z użyciem kortykosteroidów wiąże się z mniejszym ryzykiem zgonu (współczynnik ryzyka = 0,24; 95% CI = 0,07–0,91; p = 0,0351). Choć ostatnio prowadzone badania wykazały, że długotrwałe stosowanie kortykosteroidów przyczynia się do niskiego wzrostu i nadwagi, w metaanalizie 12 badań stwierdzono ich wpływ na zwiększenie siły mięśni, poprawę ich funkcji i lepszą jakość życia chorych. Odzyskanie ekspresji genu dystrofiny stanowi podstawę terapii genowych, w  tym metody pomijania zmutowanego egzonu (tzw. exon skipping), zastosowania rekombinowanych wirusów związanych z adenowirusami w celu wprowadzenia minidystrofiny oraz wymiany genu (gene transfer). Trudności związane z terapiami genowymi wiążą się z rozmiarem genu oraz pochodzeniem ekspresji dystrofiny. Inną obiecującą terapię stanowią komórki macierzyste. Bez względu na trudności i kontrowersje związane z leczeniem tego typu kilka badań klinicznych wykazało, że poprawia ono siłę mięśniową u osób z chorobą Duchenne’a.
