Opis:
Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) causes significant economic losses. Cercospora beticola, the fungus that causes this disease, quickly acquires resistance to the active substances of the used fungicides. Therefore, the combination of chemical protection and varieties with increased resistance to CLS is currently the basic way to fight this disease. The aim of the study was to check the reaction of selected breeding materials and varieties of Kutnowska Hodowla Buraka Cukrowego (KHBC) in conditions of fungicides protection, without protection and artificial inoculation. In the years 2011–2013 field experiments were carried out in Straszków (Wielkopolskie voivodeship). The study used 2 varieties of sugar beet grown by KHBC: Finezja, Luzon and the breeding line KTA1015 with different levels of resistance to CLS. Three treatments were studied: control plots (no chemical control and no inoculation), inoculated plots and protected plots. The sugar beet crop was analyzed on yield, biological and technological sugar content and molasses-forming substances content in the pulp. The highest average yield of sugar beet of the studied varieties was obtained in the treatment with fungicide protection. The yield of the tested varieties grown on control plots and inoculated with mycelial fragments was lower by 4.6% and 11.3%, respectively. The lowest content of molasses-forming substances was found in the pulp of roots from chemically protected plots. The content of these compounds increased with the severity of CLS.

W latach 2013–2014 w miejscowości Koniczynka koło Torunia przeprowadzono dwuczynnikowe doświadczenie poletkowe, którego celem była ocena efektywności ekonomicznej ochrony fungicydowej pięciu odmian odpornych na chwościka buraka. Czynnikami doświadczalnymi były odmiany buraka cukrowego (Finezja, Gallant, Jagusia, Milton, Pikador) oraz ochrona fungicydowa przed chwościkiem buraka (obiekt kontrolny oraz obiekt chroniony). Pod koniec wegetacji oceniono indeks porażenia roślin przez chwościka buraka oraz oznaczono plon korzeni. Efektywność ekonomiczną ochrony chemicznej przed chwościkiem buraka obliczono za pomocą wskaźnika pokrycia kosztów (Wpk) oraz orientacyjnych wskaźników opłacalności E1 i E2. Stosowanie ochrony chemicznej przeciw chwościkowi buraka w warunkach niskiej presji patogena na odmianach odpornych skutkowało istotnym spadkiem indeksu porażenia liści, co przyczyniło się do wzrostu plonu korzeni. Przy czym, nadwyżka produkcji rekompensowała koszty zabiegów w przypadku dwóch spośród pięciu badanych odmian.
Economic efficiency of plant fungicide protection of five resistant against Cercospora leaf spot sugar beet varieties were tested in two factor experiment on plots in 2013-2014. Sugar beet varieties (Finezja, Gallant, Jagusia, Milton and Pikador) and chemical protection against Cercospora leaf spot (protected and unprotected plots as a control) were factor of experiment. The index of leaf infection by Cercospora beticola and root yield were estimated at the late vegetation time. Economic effectiveness of fungicide protection against C. beticola were calculated using cost coverage ratio (Wpk) and rough profitability index E1 and E2. Protection of resistant sugar beet varieties in low pathogen pressure condition resulted in significant reduction of infection index and root yield increase. Yield increase compensated cost of fungicide protection in case of two among five varieties.

Cercospora species are associated with leaf spot symptoms on various host plants. In this research, nine species of the genus on some medicinal and economic crops were found in different locations in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad Provinces (southwestern Iran) and examined according to morphological characteristics of stromata, conidiophores, conidiogenous cells and conidia. Results showed that Cercospora species on Cichorium intybus (C. cichorii) and Nasturtium officinale (C. nasturtii) are new for the mycobiota of Iran. However, characteristics of Cercospora on Plantago lanceolata are very similar to the description of C. plantaginis, but morphologically indistinguishable from C. apii s. lat. Other species have already been reported from other parts of Iran, but are new in southwestern Iran. Furthermore, Rumex crispus and Trifolium resupinatum are new hosts for C. apii and C. zebrina in Iran, respectively.

In the present study, the antagonistic capability of bacterial agents inhabiting the rhizosphere of sugarbeet plants were evaluated against Cercospora beticola Sacc. under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. After preliminary screening using the dual culture method, 14 strains with higher antagonistic capability were selected for further inhibitory assays against C. beticola. Bacterial strains were identified based on the sequence data of the small subunit-rDNA (SSU-rDNA) gene. Based on the SSU sequence data, the identity of bacterial strains were determined as Bacillus (10 strains: RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, RB5, RB6, RB7, RB8, RB9, RB10), Paenibacillus (two strains: RP1, RP2), Enterobacter (one strain: RE), and Pseudomonas (one strain: RPs). The results obtained in this study showed that in all of the assays (dual culture, volatile and non-volatile metabolites) bacterial antagonists significantly inhibited the growth of C. beticola compared to the control. Bacillus (RB2) showed the highest inhibition rate on C. beticola in all of the assays. Based on the results of the laboratory assays, three bacterial strains RB2 (Bacillus), RPs (Pseudomonas), and RE (Paenibacillus) were selected for greenhouse assays. The experiment was designed based on a completely randomised design (CRD) with the application of antagonists prior to, simultaneously, and after inoculation with C. beticola on sugarbeet leaves. The reduction in disease severity was evaluated seven days after inoculation. The results of greenhouse assays were consistent with the results of laboratory studies. The obtained results showed that bacterial antagonists significantly reduced the disease severity when compared to the control.
