Modernism continues and its canon is still being developed in modern architecture. The Catalan authors of the Szczecin Philharmonic, laureates of the Mies van der Rohe Award, may not have known the works by Katarzyna Kobro and Władysław Strzemiński, but their understanding of shaping space is close to the research and work of the representatives of the interwar avant-garde connected with Łódź. The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Polish avant-garde in 2017 and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the creation of Bauhaus this year make us aware how much this movement still defines fine arts, architecture and design. Łódź, the city of the couple of artists who created the foundations of the modern movement, the city of the model housing estate in Polesie Konstantynowskie and the unique complex of downtown tenement houses, should perhaps finally appreciate the potential of its Modernist identity. Perhaps it is worthwhile to recognize and make others be aware of the Modernist Łódź.

The word emancypacja (emancipation) in Polish is a 14th-century borrowing from Latin. It was used to refer to the process of gaining freedom and independence by various people and social groups, in particular peasants, Jews and women in the Poland of that time. The lexeme is recorded and accurately described in dictionaries, which also point to a special position of emancipation of women among emancipation processes: it concerned the largest number of people and assumed the form of a decades-long and complex process. The quotations collected in the Files of Słownik języka polskiego (Dictionary of Polish) edited by W. Doroszewski prove the power and diversity of emancipation movements and permit the reconstruction of the controversies behind emancipation of women. Nowadays, the words from this nest can be seen mainly in books and are often used in historical contexts. The current problems related to the question of women’s status are referred to with words from the feminism nest, some of which are similar to and others different from emancipation.

Retrospekcja, jako metoda badawcza polegająca na przywołaniu wydarzeń z przeszłości, daje materiał porównawczy i umożliwia analizę własnych wyborów. Inspiracją do powstania artykułu jest jubileusz stulecia Towarzystwa Urbanistów Polskich (TUP), które zostało założone w styczniu 1923 roku.
This article is about spatial planning. The discussion is conducted from a theoretical perspective. The adopted analytical approach is intended to support those studies that analyze planning processes and practices to increase our understanding of what spatial planning is. Retrospection, as a research method consisting in recalling events from the past, gives comparative material and enables the analysis of one's own choices. The inspiration for the article is the centenary jubilee of the Society of Polish Town Planners (TUP), which was founded in January 1923.

In 2021, the administrative courts of Latvia celebrated two significant anniversaries. The first was one hundred years since the adoption of the Act on Administrative Courts, which was the beginning of administrative justice in Latvia. The second significant anniversary – 20 years ago a modern Administrative Procedure Act was adopted and separate administrative courts were established. This article aims to describe the genesis of administrative justice in Latvia during the Interwar Period and after the restoration of Latvia’s independence in 1991. Administrative justice a hundred years ago and now is an instrument that ensures the observance of fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law. Thus, the present day connects us with the time 100 years ago. At the same time, it should be acknowledged that the assessment of the regulation of administrative procedure, as well as the organization of administrative justice, in Latvia, differ significantly between then and now. The article analyses the reasons why the 1921 Act on Administrative Courts was considered outdated and incomplete as it approached its twentieth anniversary, while the current Administrative Procedure Act, celebrating its twentieth anniversary, is considered to be of a success story. The article also examines the challenges that characterized administrative justice in the Interwar Period and nowadays, looking for commonalities and differences. The article uses both interwar and contemporary legal sources. The article uses analytical and historical research methods. The article can serve as a source of information for further comparative studies on the genesis of administrative justice in the region.

Stefan Piotrowski (1910–1985) graduated in Mathematics (1932) and in Astronomy (1933) from the Jagiellonian University. Immediately afterwards he started working at the Astronomical Observatory in Cracow, specializing in observations of eclipsing binaries. In 1937 he made an important contribution to this field by introducing a substantial modification to the Russell-Fetlaar method of determining the elements of eclipsing binaries. During the Second World War, while working in complete isolation, he developed – independently of Chandrasekhar – the theory of radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres (his first paper on this subject was published in 1947). He continued his work on eclipsing binaries and radiative transfer during his stay at the Harvard College Observatory in 1947/1948. After returning to Cracow, he became the pioneer of photoelectric photometry in Poland. He was also the pioneer in the studies of collisions of asteroids (his 1953 paper on this subject is now considered a classic in this field). In 1952 Dr. Stefan Piotrowski moved to Warsaw where he became Professor of Astrophysics at the Warsaw University Observatory. Together with Professor Włodzimierz Zonn they have educated several generations of young Warsaw astronomers. Piotrowski and Zonn inspired and directed their research in modern fields of astronomy such as close binary systems, variable stars, stellar evolution, physics of interstellar matter, etc. They created the Warsaw School of Astrophysics. Professor Piotrowski was also the co-founder of two institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences: Institute of Astronomy (now: The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center) and The Space Research Center.
