Opis:
Introduction and aim. Angiogenesis, which is accomplished by capillary sprouting, is the process by which new vessels are created from pre-existing ones. In tumor, once their initial blood supply is depleted, a tumour is unable to grow without additional blood flow. Additionally, a tumor’s microvasculature, or microvessel density (MVD), increases along with its capacity to produce angiogenesis. We aimed to observe the relationship between the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and MVD (using CD34) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Material and methods. The expression of VEGF and CD34 antibodies was analysed using immunohistochemistry method on 50 cases of histopathologically proved OSCC. The expression was correlated with clinicopathological parameters. Results. A significant correlation was observed between VEGF expression and gender, LVSI. No correlation between any other factors and the difference in VEGF expression was statistically significant. Similarly, the MVD expression was not found to be statistically significant in any of the pathological parameters. Conclusion. VEGF positivity as well as MVD were found to be independent of the tumor pathology. Tumor MVD was found to be independent of the expression of VEGF. Further studies in a larger study group may establish a significant association so that antiangiogenic targeted therapy may be initiated.

Opis:
Background The study aimed to investigate the influence of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) on clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) by assessing alterations in gene expression and the secretion of cytokines and chemokines. Material and Methods Three ccRCC cell lines (786-O, 769-P, and CAKI-1) and a healthy HEK293 cell line were subjected to ELF-EMF exposure (frequency 50 Hz, magnetic field strength 4.5 mT) for 30 min daily for 5 days. The study examined the expression of ADAM28, NCAM1, and VEGFC genes, along with the secretion of 30 cytokines and chemokines. Results Notably, primary tumor-derived cell lines, but not those from metastatic sites, exhibited ADAM28 gene expression, which increased following ELF-EMF exposure. A statistically significant reduction in VEGFC gene expression was observed in 769-P cells after ELF-EMF exposure. Additionally, NCAM1 gene expression was upregulated in HEK293, 769-P, and 786-O cells, representing normal embryonic kidney cells and primary tumor cells, but not in CAKI-1 cells, which model metastatic sites. After EMF exposure, there was a statistically significant decrease in transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) concentration in the cell culture supernatants of HEK293 and CAKI-1 cell lines, with no other significant changes in the secretion of tested cytokines. Conclusions Given the study’s findings and available research, caution is warranted when drawing conclusions about the potential inhibitory effect of ELF-EMF on ccRCC progression. Standardization of experimental models is imperative when assessing the effects of EMF in a human context.

Opis:
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and bladder cancer (BC) are among the most frequently diagnosed urinary system cancers worldwide. They are characterized by high mortality and recurrence rates. In response to the rising incidence and mortality rates, scientists are exploring innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Metabolomics, which analyzes metabolite levels, may enable early diagnosis and monitoring of therapy progress. Compared to other omics technologies, it focuses on the outcomes of metabolite activity, providing a unique perspective on processes occurring in cancer cells. Metabolomic analyses utilize techniques such as mass spectrometry. These methods allow the identification of biomarkers and precise determination of the chemical composition of biological samples. However, the most commonly used method is liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), which enables the most comprehensive screening of cancer metabolomes. Recent studies show significant progress in recognizing characteristic metabolites associated with urological cancers, although this area remains partially unexplored. Research on circulating metabolites, especially those present in easily accessible samples like blood or urine, demonstrates promising potential in clinical practice. Study results reveal differences in metabolic profiles between various stages of cancer development, which may have clinical significance. The future of this field involves an increasing number of clinical cohorts, standardization of sample preparation, and further improvements in instrument sensitivity and speed. LC-MS-based metabolomics has the potential to contribute to the improvement of diagnostics, therapy, and the quality of life of patients with some urological cancers. However, challenges, such as the lack of uniform methodologies and understanding of metabolite determinants, require further research and innovation.

Obtaining electrical energy is a substantial challenge for the 21st century. The world is increasingly dominated by pro-ecological tendencies: wind energy, solar radiation and electric energy from the so-called hydrogen batteries and their mutations. In military applications, using these source types is also beneficial since it substantially improves camouflage possibilities, e.g., it enables the reduction of the thermal afterglow and noise intensity. The manuscript’s authors developed the overview of pro-ecological power systems and presented the current state of implementations.

Opis:
Starch production from fresh sweet potatoes generates process wastewater called sweet potato cell liquid (SPCL), which is rich in sweet potato protein (SPP). Currently, the commonly used protein recovery methods, such as isoelectric point precipitation and ultrafiltration, were not suitable for SPP recovery due to the low protein content of SPCL and the high cost of recovery. The feasibility of recovering SPP by SPCL acidification via inoculation-assisted fermentation was investigated in this study. The results indicated that the pH of SPCL could be reduced to approximately 4.0 within 6 h of fermentation with inoculation, resulting in an SPP extraction yield of 55.45% and purity of 66.23 g protein/100 g. With the addition of heating treatment, the extraction yield of SPP increased to 76.97–95.34%, while it maintained the purity of 66.36–70.12 g protein/100 g. The composition analysis revealed that SPP products contained sugars (below 11.5 g/100 g) in addition to protein and trace amounts of lignin and phenolics. Functional properties analysis showed that the SPP recovered by inoculation-enhanced fermentation exhibited better emulsifying and foaming properties, and higher digestibility compared to the SPP precipitated using hydrochloric acid. The method of extracting SPP from SPCL by inoculation-enhanced fermentation, as developed in this study, was a straightforward and cost-effective process that fosters significant potential for industrial applications.

Opis:
In recent years, the incidence of malignant tumors, including multiple tumors, has increased. The diagnosis of primary multiple tumors affects between 0.73% and 11.7% of oncology patients. Some patients are diagnosed with synchronous tumors, meaning independent tumor foci are identified within an interval of less than six months. The diagnosis requires histopathological confirmation of the different tumor morphologies and the exclusion of the lesions as metastatic foci. The most frequently diagnosed multiple cancers originate in the head and neck. The diagnosis of a second independent tumor in a patient significantly shortens the five-year survival rate and increases the risk of disease recurrence or the detection of additional primary tumors. A 66-year-old (now 74-year-old) patient with hearing loss was diagnosed with cancer of the external auditory canal. In oncological diagnostics, it was decided to perform, among other tests, a PET-CT examination to exclude metastatic foci. A metabolically active lesion was visible in the hilum of the left lung and the right adrenal gland. Further diagnostics identified the lesion as an independent tumor in the lung, with the morphology of small cell carcinoma in stage IV, with metastases to the right adrenal gland. In the patient interview, nicotine addiction and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring home oxygen therapy were noted. The patient was treated in accordance with the then NCCN, ESMO, and PTOK guidelines. The lesion in the external auditory canal was resected with an R1 margin. Due to the diagnosis of small cell carcinoma, the patient underwent six cycles of EP chemotherapy (etoposide, cisplatin). The treatment was supplemented with radiotherapy of the lesion in the left lung and planned radiotherapy of the central nervous system (PCI – prophylactic cranial irradiation). The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of accurate diagnostics at the initial diagnosis of cancer and to consider the possibility of diagnosing metastatic lesions as second (and subsequent) primary lesions. This is crucial when assessing overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS). It is also important to note the difficulties in planning the treatment of two independent cancer sites, which most often requires different therapeutic approaches. A complete response to treatment was achieved on the RECIST scale.
Najczęściej rozpoznawane nowotwory mnogie mają jedno źródło w obrębie głowy i szyi. Rozpoznanie drugiego niezależnego ogniska nowotworu u pacjenta znacznie skraca pięcioletnie przeżycie i powoduje wzrost ryzyka nawrotu choroby lub wykrycia kolejnych ognisk pierwotnych. U 66-letniej (obecnie 74-letniej) pacjentki diagnozowanej z powodu pogorszenia słuchu rozpoznano nowotwór przewodu słuchowego zewnętrznego. W trakcie diagnostyki onkologicznej zdecydowano o wykonaniu m.in. badania PET-CT celem wykluczenia ognisk przerzutowych. Uwidoczniono aktywną metabolicznie zmianę we wnęce płuca lewego oraz nadnerczu prawym. W trakcie dalszej diagnostyki rozpoznano zmianę jako niezależne ognisko nowotworowe pierwotnie zlokalizowane w płucu o morfologii raka drobnokomórkowego w stadium IV z przerzutem do nadnercza prawego.

The present study aims to develop a test protocol based on the literature for electrochemical characterisation of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis commercial stack using polarisation curves. For this, a 1-kW water electrolysis test stand with integrated temperature control and measurement systems was built around the stack. Afterwards, the stack performance was characterised under different operating pressure and temperature conditions by using polarisation curves. A measurement protocol was developed based on the literature. To ensure the reproducibility of the results, two rounds of experiments were performed. The experiments were carried out at temperatures between 20 and 60 °C and pressures up to 15 bar. The results show distinct regions in the polarisation curves related to the activation and ohmic overvoltage. The effect of temperature and pressure on the performance is shown and analysed. The performance of single cells in the stack is also measured. The stack polarisation curves are compared with those in the literature, which gives an understanding of the materials used in electrodes and types of membranes.

In today’s manufacturing systems, especially in Industry 4.0, highly autonomous production cells play an important role. To reach this goal of autonomy, different technologies like industrial robots, machine tools, and automated guided vehicles (AGV) are deployed simultaneously which creates numerous challenges on various automation levels. One of those challenges regards the scheduling of all applied resources and their corresponding tasks. Combining data from a real production environment and Constraint Programming (CP-SAT), we provide a cascaded scheduling approach that plans production orders for machine tools to minimize makespan and tool changeover time while enabling the corresponding robot for robot-collaborated processes. Simultaneously, AGVs provide all production cells with the necessary material and tools. Hereby, magazine capacity for raw material as well as finished parts and tool service life are taken into account.

Opis:
Alunogen (Al2(SO4)3∙17H2O), a rare secondary mineral, has been found in the efflorescence on sandstones from the Stone Town Nature Reserve in Ciężkowice, southeastern Poland. This is probably the first find of this salt on such rocks in Poland. Alunogen forms in various geological environments, but mainly from the oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides in ore deposits and Al-rich Earth materials under low-pH conditions. Its crystallization at this particular site depends on a set of necessary physicochemical (pH, concentration), climatic (season, temperature, humidity), site-related (location and protection of efflorescence), and mineralogical (the presence of pyrite) conditions. This paper presents the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the alunogen from the Stone Town Nature Reserve (based on SEM-EDS, XRPD, EPMA and Raman spectroscopy methods) as well as of the efflorescence itself (based on XRPD and STA coupled with QMS and FTIR for the analysis of gas products). Crystals of alunogen take the shape of flakes, often with a hexagonal outline, clustered in aggregates forming a cellular network. Its calculated formula is (Al1.96Fe3+ 0.01)∑1.97(SO4)3∙17H2O (based on 12 O and 17 H2O). The unit-cell parameters refined for the triclinic space group P1 are: a = 7.423 (1) Å, b = 26.913 (5) Å, c = 6.056 (1) Å, α = 89.974 (23)°, β = 97.560 (25)°, γ = 91.910 (22)°. The Raman spectra (SO4) bands are: intensive 995 cm−1 (ν1); low-intensive 1069, 1093 and 1127 cm−1 (ν3); low-intensive 419 and 443; medium-intensive 470 cm−1 (ν2); and medium-intensive 616 cm−1 (ν4). Those at 530, 312 and at 338 cm−1 are assigned to water vibrations and those at 135, 156, 180 cm−1 to the lattice modes. Although the efflorescence contained an admixture of other minerals (pickeringite, gypsum and quartz), the predominant alunogen is almost chemically pure and the above parameters are consistent with the values reported in the literature for alunogen from different locations and of various origins.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) pertain to a kind of modern technology for the direct conversion of chemical energy in organic matter from wastewaters into electricity during the oxidation of organic substrates. A system of continuous MFC was constructed for the treatment of real petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW). The treatment of real PRW, operational performance of the MFC system, biodegradation of furfural, and energy output were investigated in this study. The MFC was inoculated by mixed anaerobic bacteria, with Bacillus sp. as the dominant type, and continuously operated for 30 days. The biodegradation of furfural and phenol, which are the most prevalent toxicants in refinery wastewater, was investigated. The MFC system reached maximum energy outputs of 552.25 mW/m3 and 235 mV. In the anodic chamber, the maximum removal of furfural and phenol was higher than 99%, with biodegradation of organic content reaching up to 95%. This study demonstrated the viability of a continuous-flow MFC system as a green technology for the treatment of furfural-rich real refinery effluents while generating electricity.

One potential solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from ships and meeting the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) requirements is to use a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquid hydrogen and liquefied natural gas fuels. To improve energy efficiency for diesel-electric dual-fuel ship propulsion systems, an engine power limitation system can also be used. This paper examines the potential use of these systems with regard to several factors, including compliance with EEXI standards set by the International Maritime Organization, fuel ratio optimisation, installation requirements, and economic feasibility. As a case study, an LNG carrier is analysed, with dual-fuel diesel-electric and two hybrid systems adjusted to meet IMO-EEXI requirements with engine power limitation percentages of 25%, 0% (hybrid option 1), and 15% (hybrid option 2), respectively. From an economic standpoint, the liquid hydrogenbased system has competitive costs compared to the dual-fuel diesel-electric system, with costs of 2.1 and 2.5 dollars per kilogram for hybrid system options 1 and 2, respectively.

Opis:
Wastewater has high potential as an energy source. Therefore, it is important to recover even the smallest part of this energy, e.g., in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The obtained electricity production depends on the process rate of the electrodes. In MFC, the microorganisms are the catalyst of anode, and the cathode is usually made of carbon material. To increase the MFC efficiency it is necessary to search the new cathode materials. In this work, the electricity production from yeast wastewater in membrane-less microbial fuel cells with a carbon felt, Ni-Co, Cu-B, and Cu-Ag cathodes has been analyzed. In the first place, the measurements of the stationary potential of the electrodes (with Cu-Ag catalyst obtained by the electrochemical deposition technique) were performed. Next, the analysis of the electric energy production during the operation of the membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC). The highest parameters were obtained for the Ni-Co and Cu-Ag catalysts. The cell voltage of 607 mV for Ni-Co and 605 mV for Cu-Ag was obtained. Additionally, the power of 4.29 mW for both cathodes - Ni-Co and Cu-Ag was obtained. Moreover, Ni-Co and Cu-Ag allow the shortest time of COD reduction. Based on the test results (with selected MFC design, wastewater, temperature, etc.), it can be concluded that of all the analyzed electrodes, Cu-Ag and Ni-Co electrodes have the best parameters for use as cathodes in ML-MFC. However, based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that all the tested electrodes can be used as cathode material in MFC.
