Opis:
December 2014 marked the 30th year anniversary of Bhopal gas tragedy. This sudden and accidental leakage of deadly poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas instigated research efforts to understand the nature, severity of health damage and sufferings of 570 000 ailing survivors of this tragedy. In a decade-long period, our systematic laboratory investigations coupled with long-term molecular surveillance studies have comprehensively demonstrated that the risk of developing an environmental associated aberrant disease phenotype, including cancer, involves complex interplay of genomic and epigenetic reprogramming. These findings poised us to translate this knowledge into an investigative framework of “molecular biodosimetry” in a strictly selected cohort of MIC exposed individuals. A pragmatic cancer risk-assessment strategy pursued in concert with a large-scale epidemiological study might unfold molecular underpinnings of host-susceptibility and exposureresponse relationship. The challenges are enormous, but we postulate that the study will be necessary to establish a direct initiation-promotion paradigm of environmental carcinogenesis. Given that mitochondrial retrograde signaling-induced epigenetic reprogramming is apparently linked to neoplasticity, a cutting-edge tailored approach by an expert pool of biomedical researchers will be fundamental to drive these strategies from planning to execution. Validating the epigenomic signatures will hopefully result in the development of biomarkers to better protect human lives in an overburdened ecosystem, such as India, which is continuously challenged to meet population demands. Besides, delineating the mechanistic links between MIC exposure and cancer morbidity, our investigative strategy might help to formulate suitable regulatory policies and measures to reduce the overall burden of occupational and environmental carcinogenesis.

Opis:
The consumption of contaminated natural pastures with highly dangerous and toxic heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by Andean camelids could cause harmful effects on the health of people exposed via consumption of contaminated alpaca meat. The concentration of Cd, Pb and Zn in the soil-plant-alpaca system was determined and the potential health risk associated with the intake of alpaca meat was evaluated. Soil and grass samples were collected in grazing areas of the South American camelid, and in the Municipal Slaughterhouse of Huancavelica, 30 samples of alpaca pectoral muscle were collected. The concentrations of Cd in the soil, grass and alpaca muscle exceeded the threshold values of national and international standards. The bioaccumulation factor values of the three elements studied was less than 1, Cd was the element with the highest bioavailability and mobility in the soil-plant-alpaca muscle system. The mean concentration of Cd in muscle was 0.335 ± 0.088 mg/kg which exceeded the maximum level allowed by the FAO/WHO and the European Commission, the concentration of Pb and Zn did not exceed the regulated limits. No significant differences were detected in accumulation according to sex. The non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI) values for the studied metals indicated that there is no adverse health risk (HI < 1) for children and adults from alpaca meat intake, but they could experience carcinogenic risk from prolonged exposure to Cd, and for exceeding the 1×10–4 limit threshold. It is recommended to conduct further studies on the accumulation of potentially toxic elements in alpaca tissues in order to determine the possible total risk of heavy metals in consumer’s health.

Opis:
The complex and systematic description of morphological, mineralogical, physicochemical and toxicological features of urban and rural particulate matter PM10 is essential because of their harmful impacts on human health condition. The exposure to ambient particulate matter PM10 is known to be able to trigger inflammatory process, allergic reaction of different type, modification of DNA and carcinogenic transformation of many various cell types of the human body. The effects mentioned above have been confirmed with lots of in vitro and in vivo studies. Although the ambient particulate matter is the subject of large spectrum of epidemiological studies and scientific explorations, there is still lack of data concerning the assessment of human health risks in association with exposure to ambient air particles including particulate matter PM10. These pieces of information are necessary especially for primary prevention of many human diseases - such as a chronic obstructive disease, bronchial asthma, Crohn disease, ulcerous colitis, several degenerative diseases of central nervous system. The data discussing the negative influences of particulate matter PM10 on human health are also essential for researching new – more efficient – drugs and choice of the best available treatment in relation to an initiating factor or factors. Moreover, the amount of environmental pollutants is still rising therefore it is unavoidable to find out all their potential negative impacts on human health condition. To take the facts described above into account, this article is devoted to the topic of PM10 participation in pathogenesis of the most dangerous and often incurable human disease – the cancer. At the present time, it is namely supposed that a contact of organism with particulate matter PM10 has a significant role in developing of several types of malignant human tumours. Among these kinds of cancers, there are two types of carcinoma with rising number in human population – that is small-cell lung carcinoma and a carcinoma of colon and rectum. Besides these ones, the exposure of organism to particulate matter PM10 is considered to be an important etiopathogenic factor of some types of skin cancer and malignant tumours of scrotum. Because of the facts mentioned above it is necessary to devote to studying of negative effects of particulate matter PM10 sufficient rate of vigilance.
Wymienione efekty działania PM10 zostały potwierdzone wieloma badaniami in vitro oraz in vivo.

Opis:
Purpose: Water is vital for the sustenance of every life form. Urbanization, growing population and industrial development has led to exploitation of water resources globally. This study assesses quality of water resources of Mohammedia prefecture. Design/methodology/approach: The water quality analysis was carried out based on physio-chemical and heavy metal concentrations. The physio-chemical analysis comprised of status of concentration, overall quality and water pollution index evaluation. The heavy metal evaluation consisted of Ecological Risk Index, non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk assessment. Findings: The landfill near Ben Nfifikh River reported insignificant (WPI<1) – low level of pollution (>1≤1.5) for surface and groundwater points. However, the groundwater for Zenata region was found to pose both carcinogenic (CRt > 0.0001, range 0.4-35.31) and non-carcinogenic risks (HQ>1, range 6 -34) of higher degree rendering it unfit for human consumption. Hence, this study concludes that groundwater resources should not as water supply; instead, Oud El Maleh River can serve as surface water source for meeting requirements of Zenata region. Research limitations/implications: The data obtained can be categorized as landfill area near river Nfifikh and landfill area near river El Maleh. Both areas have been investigated for groundwater and surface water quality assessment. Practical implications: This study demonstrates the need to study the characteristics of groundwater (depth, flow rate, water renewal, etc.) before arranging a waste dump. This problem is especially relevant for arid countries, since residents experience a shortage of water, as well as a lack of rainfall provides a weak renewal of groundwater, which can contribute to the accumulation of a higher concentration of carcinogens in groundwater and provide a high risk to public health. If policymakers in arid countries and decision-makers have effective water quality maps, then the country can be more efficiently managed water resources without risking the population. Originality/value: The current study is planned as a multi-stage, each of which is supposed to conduct field studies of groundwater and surface water quality with appropriate parameters, analysis of institutional reports and related scientific studies in order to create an effective water quality map for rational water use.

Opis:
Objectives Chemicals were used in various fields by the development of industry and science and technology. The Chemical Hazard Risk Management (CHARM) was developed to assess the risk of chemicals in South Korea. In this study, we were to evaluate the CHARM model developed for the effective management of workplace chemicals. Material and Methods We used 59 carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic (CMR) materials, which are both the work environment measurement result and the usage information among the manufacturer data. The CHARM model determines the risk to human health using the exposure level (based on working environment measurements or a combination of the quantity used and chemical physical properties (e.g., fugacity and volatility)), hazard (using occupational exposure limit (OEL) or Risk phrases (R-phrases)/Hazard statements (H-statements) from the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)). Results The risk level was lower when using the results of the work environment measurement than when applying the chemical quantity and physical properties in the exposure level evaluation method. It was evaluated as grade 4 for the CMR material in the hazard class determination. The risk assessment method by R-phrases was evaluated more conservatively than the risk assessment method by OEL. And the risk assessment method by H-statements was evaluated more conservatively than the risk assessment method by R-phrases. Conclusions The CHARM model was gradually conservatively assessed as it proceeded in the next step without quantitative information for individual workplaces. The CHARM is expected to help identify the risk if the hazards and exposure levels of chemicals were identified in individual workplaces. For CMR substances, although CHARM is highly evaluated for hazards, the risk is assessed to be low if exposure levels are assessed low. When evaluating the risk of highly hazardous chemicals such as CMR substances, we believe the model should be adapted to be more conservative and classify these as higher risk. Opis:
Introduction. This article will deal with environmental pollution in cities including the problem of risk assessment. The aim of the study is to determine carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for the health of the population due to chemical contamination of air, water and food in the cities of the Krasnoyarsk region. Material and methods. The research was conducted in the Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Krasnoyarsk region. 5122 samples of air, 4863 samples of water and 6915 samples of food stuff have been analyzed. Concentration of chemical substances was the base on which individual carcinogenesis risk (ICR) and population carcinogenic conventional risks (PCCR) and non carcinogenic risks [1] have been calculated. In the industrial cities chemical pollution of air, water and food stuff including carcinogenic substances creates carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of morbidity of the population with the reinforcement of the complex impact, “with” which greatly exceeds the maximum acceptable risks. Results. Chemical pollution of environmental facilities in cities of the Krasnoyarsk region produce complex carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks which exceed maximum limit. The greatest shares in structure of complex carcinogenic risks are made in food stuff and water consumption in structure of complex non-carcinogenic risks as a result of air pollution and food stuff pollution. Conclusions. Obtained data could be used to set priorities in preventive measures to preserve health of the population in industrial cities of the Krasnoyarsk region.
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w Centrum Higieny i Epidemiologii regionu Krasnojarskiego. Wykonano 5122 analizy powietrza, 4863 analizy wody i 6915 analiz żywności. Na podstawie stężenia substancji chemicznych obliczono indywidualne ryzyko kancerogenezy (ICR) oraz populacyjne umowne ryzyko kancerogenezy (PCCR) i ryzyko niekancerogenności. W miastach przemysłowych zanieczyszczenie chemiczne wody, powietrza i żywności, stwarza kancerogenne i niekancerogenne ryzyko zachorowalności populacyjnej, co jest potęgowane przez kompleksowy udział dodatkowych czynników i znacznie przekracza maksymalnie dopuszczalne ryzyko. Wyniki. Zanieczyszczenie chemiczne z obiektów środowiskowych w miastach krasnojarskich charakteryzuje kompleks kancerogennego i niekancerogennego ryzyka, które przekracza dopuszczalne maksimum. Największy udział w strukturze kompleksu ryzyka kancerogennego wykazuje konsumpcja żywności, natomiast udział wody pitnej wykazano w strukturze kompleksu ryzyka niekancerogennego, jako wynik skażenia powietrza i wody. Wnioski. Uzyskane dane powinny być wykorzystane celem określenia pierwszeństwa w kierunkach opracowywania działań zapobiegawczych dla zachowania zdrowia populacyjnego w przemysłowych miastach regionu Krasnojarska.

The most common cancer among all skin cancers is basal cell carcinoma. It occurs five times more likely than squamous cell carcinoma. In total, the incidence of skin cancer in Poland was in 2005, more than 4,300 new cases in women and nearly 4,000 men. Skin cancer is ranked in terms of the incidence of cancer, respectively, the 3 and 5 position. The incidence of skin cancer is associated with exposure to sunlight. Skin cancer most often locates on the exposed parts of the body (hands, face, neck, scalp - particularly in those balding). Most often affects people in 6 and 7 decade of life. The aim of the study was to present the carcinogenic factors responsible for the development of skin cancers and to briefly discuss individual skin cancers. We analysed Polish and foreign bibliography on the prevention of skin cancers based on the most recent reports.
