To make decisions and exercise managerial control over the degree of input utilization, and produce desired outputs, it is important to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the municipality-owned public transit service operators. This study uses the Data Envelopment Analysis approach to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the public transit companies operated by the city administration in Addis Ababa. The size of the fleet and the total number of personnel serve as inputs, and covered vehicle kilometers and the number of passengers carried annually serve as outputs. Based on secondary information gathered from each firm, the technical efficiency and operational effectiveness of service providers are then examined. The study's findings show that the Anbessa city bus was efficient in using resources to produce output in 2019/20 and 2021/22, but wasteful in other years. In the same way, the Sheger City Bus was efficient in 2017/18 and 2021/22 but ineffective in all other years. However, the aggregate findings show that both research's efficiency levels are rising annually. Besides, with mean scores of 0.85 and 0.874, respectively, Anbessa and Sheger Bus were technically flawed. On the other side, operational effectiveness reveals that the Anbessa city bus was only effective in 2021/22. Furthermore, the Sheger city bus' effectiveness result has improved and started to be effective in 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2021/22. In conclusion, the Anbessa and Sheger city buses' efficiency and effectiveness ratings improved year over year and peaked in 2021/22. Hence, to support the business and boost its operational capabilities, the city administration should encourage public bus transit operators in the city and offer subsidies and other incentives to them based on their existing performance.

Przewozy w strefie podmiejskiej Krakowa były i są ważne dla mieszkańców Krakowa i strefy podmiejskiej. Od 2007 roku kompetencje organizatora publicznego transportu zbiorowego na tym obszarze na mocy porozumień międzygminnych wykonuje jednostka miejska (ZIKiT). Pozwala to lepiej integrować komunikację w strefie miejskiej i podmiejskiej, a jednocześnie gminy są współodpowiedzialne finansowo za wielkość i planowanie oferty przewozowej. W artykule przedstawiono organizację obsługi komunikacyjnej w strefie podmiejskiej i liczbę linii obsługujących każdą z gmin. Scharakteryzowano ofertę przewozową przedstawiając przystanki początkowe linii aglomeracyjnych, liczbę uruchamianych kursów, wielkość i komfort autobusów, którymi kursy są wykonywane. Wielkość realizowanych zadań przewozowych pokazano na podstawie liczby przewiezionych pasażerów ogółem oraz z podziałem na korzystających z linii aglomeracyjnych wyłącznie na terenie miasta, przejeżdżających do strefy podmiejskiej i wyłącznie na terenie gmin, a także wielkości wykonanej pracy eksploatacyjnej wyrażonej w wozokilometrach i wozogodzinach. Przedstawiono wybrane wskaźniki charakteryzujące przewozy jak: średnia odległość przejazdu pasażerów, prędkość komunikacyjna czy wskaźnik produktywności linii. Omówiono również rozkład popytu na przewozy w kolejnych godzinach doby. Wszystkie analizy przeprowadzono dla każdego typu dnia tygodnia (dnia roboczego, soboty i niedzieli). Jednocześnie dokonano porównań do stanu i wielkości zadań przewozowych obserwowanych w 2009 roku.
Passenger transport services in Cracow suburban area have been and still are very significant not only for Cracow residents but for people working or living in suburban area. Currently, the competences of public transport organizer within this area, according to agreements between city and every commune/municipality, belong to the municipal company (ZIKiT). Such solution is very functional and helps to integrate communication in the area while municipalities (gminy) are jointly responsible financially for the volume and framework of offered services. The organization of transport services in suburban area and number of transport lines providing services for inhabitants of all communes (gminy) has been presented in the article. The transportation offer has been characterized in terms of first bus stops, where lines start their running, number of rides, size and comfort of buses operating on lines. The volume of transportation work has been defined on the base of the total number of conveyed passengers as well as with reference to shares of passengers travelling only within area of the city, transferring to communes/municipalities or travelling only within area of communes. Characteristics includes also volume of exploitation work expressed in vehicle-kilometers and vehicle- hours. There were also presented coefficients characterizing transport services such as: average distance of passenger’s travel, average speed and coefficient of line productivity. Distribution of number of passengers in day hours has been discussed. All mentioned above analyses have been carried out for all types of weekdays (a typical working day, Saturday, Sunday). Additionally comparisons between current state and values of public transport services observed in 2009 have been made.

Strefa podmiejska dużych miast jest coraz atrakcyjniejszym obszarem inwestowania i zamieszkania dla mieszkańców miasta. Równocześnie mieszkańcy strefy podmiejskiej korzystają z zasobów miasta w postaci miejsc pracy, nauki, edukacji oraz załatwiania spraw administracyjnych, związanych z ochroną zdrowia lub zakupami. Więzi pomiędzy tymi obszarami stają się coraz silniejsze. Sprawność powiązań jest uzależniona od możliwości przemieszczania się mieszkańców, którą powinny zapewniać nie tylko samochody osobowe, ale przede wszystkim środki publicznego transportu zbiorowego. W strefie podmiejskiej Krakowa publiczny transport zbiorowy jest organizowany w formie komunikacji autobusowej na mocy porozumień międzygminnych zawartych z 15 gminami położonymi w otoczeniu miasta. Ponadto marszałek województwa uczestniczy w finansowaniu połączeń kolejowych pociągami osobowymi na 5 liniach kolejowych. W artykule podjęto próbę oceny dostępności komunikacyjnej gmin położonych w strefie podmiejskiej Krakowa. Dostępność komunikacyjna może być opisywana z wykorzystaniem wielu czynników uwzględniających rozmieszczenie w przestrzeni, liczbę mieszkańców, do których skierowana jest oferta przewozowa, czas, w którym oferta jest dostępna, czas podróży i sposób realizowania oferty, poziom informacji oraz koszty związane z wykonywaniem przemieszczenia. Wymienione czynniki pozwalają sformułować ocenę dostępności przestrzennej, demograficznej, czasowej, funkcjonalnej, prawnej, technicznej i ekonomiczno-taryfowej. Analizę dostępności przeprowadzono dla 15 gmin strefy podmiejskiej Krakowa i 6 miast położonych na ich terenie.
The suburban zone around large cities becomes increasingly attractive area to live and invest for city inhabitants. At the same time, residents of the suburb area use city resources like jobs science and education institutions, administration services as well as health protection or shopping. The ties between these areas become stronger and stronger. The efficiency of this relationship depends on possibility of mobility provided not only by private cars but most of all by public transport. Public transport – bus transport – in the suburban area around Krakow is organized on the basis of agreements with 15 neighbouringmunicipalities situated inside this zone. In addition, authorities of the Małopolska province co-finances rail connections on 5 rail lines. This article attempts to assess the transportation accessibility of municipalities located in the suburban area of Krakow. Public transport accessibility can be described using a number of factors, including distribution in the space, number of inhabitants, which are addressed with transportation offer, the period of time when the offer is available, travel time, level of information and costs of trips. These factors allow to formulate an assessment of spatial, demographic, temporal, functional, legal, technical, economic and tariff accessibility. The analysis of transport accessibility is curried out for 15 municipalities of the suburban area of Krakow and 6 cities located in their area.

With the growth of the population and the expansion of the territory of large cities, certain difficulties arise in meeting the needs of passengers for transportation. This article studied the satisfaction of users with the city's public transport system, especially the bus transport. Thus, a survey was conducted among passengers in Baku to assess their satisfaction with public transport. The survey covered all districts of Baku in general. The study was conducted in October 2021. The questions were aimed at identifying the weight, reasons for preferring the different types of public transport, the level of satisfaction of the population with these types, assessing the quality of services and the lack of urban bus transport. The level of satisfaction of survey participants with the work of public transport by gender and age groups was determined. Subsequently, this study showed that most of the population movements are carried out by bus transport. The analysis revealed factors that reduce the quality of service on bus routes. In addition, it examined the reasons why the population chose the bus transport, the shortcomings of the bus transport, the effectiveness of dedicated bus lanes, and attitudes toward the use of alternative public transport. Summarily, this study was passenger service to increase passenger satisfaction toward attracting more people to public transport.

The article presents difficulties in the field of traffic engineering that need to be taken into account when deciding to build a dedicated bus corridors.

The public transport service is highly essential to meet the demand due to a rapidly growing population and mobility. Thus providing public service and improve its service becomes an urgent need in recent years. In Iraq, the Bus system represents the backbone in public transportation, which is based mainly on highway infrastructure. To meet the growing mobility needs, enhancing public service provided only by bus routes is essential. Measuring bus route performance represents one of the crucial transit research topics in the last recent years. The current study tries to investigate the urban public route's efficiency utilizing the "data envelopment analysis (DEA)" technique. To analyze route performance, DEA is using, and performance measures include route design, cost, service, operation, and comfort efficiency are selected and calculated for different routes. Efficiency and effectiveness are the output of this process. Bus company owners can also use the results of this study to improve their services, attract new customers, and better manage their resources.

In the present times the high volume of traffic results in a particular emphasis on well-organized urban transport. According to the ideas concerning the sustainable development, city authorities are trying to eliminate congestion in the downtown area of large urban centers. The article attempts to analyze the economic efficiency of the bus and tram transport in Gliwice. This topic was chosen because of the decision of the city authorities abolish tram services. Consequently, tram lines have been replaced by the bus service. The article presents the carriers who perform services for the Transportation Association of the Municipal Upper Silesian Industrial District in Katowice (Komunikacyjny Związek Komunalny Górnośląskiego Okręgu Przemysłowego w Katowicach, KZK GOP), and particularly – their fleet. It offers a comparison of operating the city bus and tram lines based on the economic efficiency, and taking into account the external costs of air pollution.
W dobie dużego natężenia ruchu samochodowego szczególny nacisk kładziony jest na dobrze zorganizowaną komunikację miejską. Kierując się ideami zrównoważonego rozwoju próbuje się wyeliminować kongestię z centrum dużych ośrodków miejskich. W artykule podjęto próbę ekonomicznej analizy efektywności transportu tramwajowego i autobusowego na terenie Gliwic. Temat ten został wybrany ze względu na decyzję władz miasta, w wyniku której zrezygnowano z usług komunikacji tramwajowej, na rzecz transportu autobusowego. W artykule przedstawiono przewoźników wykonujących usługi na zlecenie Komunikacyjnego Związku Komunalnego Górnośląskiego Okręgu Przemysłowego w Katowicach, a w szczególności wykorzystywany przez nich tabor. Dokonano porównania obsługujących miasto linii autobusowych i tramwajowych oraz analizy efektywności ekonomicznej z uwzględnieniem kosztów zewnętrznych związanych z zanieczyszczeniem powietrza.

In this paper there have been presented results of an analysis of repair efficiency for an emergency repair subsystem (technical service units) in a selected transportation system. The research object was a real system of municipal transportation, in a given urban agglomeration. Experimental data, necessary to determine values of indexes describing efficiency of repairs performed by the technical service units, come from a selected group of technical objects (city buses) used in the analyzed system. The data was obtained on the basis of experimental tests conducted within the studied system, employing a method of passive experiment, in conditions natural for the technical objects functioning. This work presents a method according to which the values have been determined and the analysis of efficiency of repairs performed within the emergency subsystem has been made. The values of repair efficiency assessment concern selected systems of the analyzed buses. The selection of these systems was made taking into consideration the number of the studied systems failures. The obtained results have been demonstrated in the form of tables and graphically, in charts. On this basis, there has been made an analysis of efficiency of repairs performed by emergency repair units. Due to its general character, the presented method can be used for an assessment of repair efficiency both within operation and maintenance systems of technical objects of different types and efficiency of repairs performed at particular repair stations, groups of stations or subsystems providing vehicles with serviceability.

The paper dwells on developing the measures required for the effective functioning of urban bus routes, which are of great practical importance. As the analysis shows that in order to effectively organize urban passenger traffic and determine their optimal number on the routes, it is necessary to determine the pattern of changes in passenger flows, and on this basis, to distribute the number of buses in accordance with day–night hours. Based on this, an analysis of factors has been carried out affecting urban bus transport, and we have developed the measures aiming at increasing the effectiveness of passenger transport in transport companies.

Opis:
The organization of public transport is an important element of a sustainable transport policy in the region. This is particularly relevant and important to the organization of transport in areas with a high degree of urbanization, for example Silesian Agglomeration. The article presents an analysis of connections organized by KZK GOP on the route allowing access from one of the smaller towns (Pyskowice) located in the Silesian Agglomeration to Katowice city.
Organizacja transportu zbiorowego stanowi istotny element polityki zorganizowanego transportu danego regionu. Jest to szczególnie istotne i ważne podczas organizacji transportu na obszarach o wysokim stopniu urbanizacji, jak np.: Aglomeracja Górnośląska. W artykule przedstawiono analizę połączeń organizowanych przez KZK GOP na trasie umożliwiającej dojazd z jednej z mniejszych miejscowości (Pyskowice) zlokalizowanych na terenie Aglomeracji Górnośląskiej w kierunku Katowic.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono transport publiczny w godzinach nocnych w Pozaniu. Nie jest to już tylko usługa socjalna umożliwiająca najuboższym dotarcie do pracy późnym wieczorem czy bardzo wcześnie rano, ale usługa mająca istotny wpływ na atrakcyjność oferty gastronomicznej i kulturalnej miasta, a także przyczyniającą sę - poprzez zapewnienie mobilności przez całą dobę - do wyboru transportu publicznego zamiast samochodu. Zmiana roli nocnego transportu publicznego wymusza poświęcenie większej uwagi jakości usług. Stan i lokalizacja przystanków odgrywają tu ważną, choć nadal niedocenioną rolę.

Opis:
In many areas of Poland, areas of transport exclusion related to the lack of public transport service or insufficient offer are identified. After 1989, when Poland underwent political transformation and consequent economic transformation, funding for bus and rail transport collapsed. While rail transport experienced a significant regression in connections, regional bus transport can be said to have been completely eliminated. On the map of the whole of Poland, Kartuzy poviat is an exception, where the role of the carrier has been taken over by a private company which offers transport services at a level corresponding to demand, thus positively influencing the transport habits of the inhabitants. The article examines the change in the offer in bus and rail transport in Kartuzy poviat in the years 1990-2023 and shows that the private bus carrier performs tasks that should de facto rest with the state authorities.
