Opis:
Field inoculation experiments were performed during 2015–2017, in south-eastern part of Poland. The pathogenicity of F. crookwellense was estimated based on the kernels yield reduction of 10 selected oat genotypes. Panicles of oat were inoculated with conidial suspension of F. crookwellense strain No. 72 which caused a reduction in kernels yield by 28.54% and kernels number per panicle by 28.07%, compared to the control. The lowest yield reduction, as a result of the panicle inoculation with F. crookwellense, was found in the case of the cultivar ‘Pablo’ (18.73%), while the highest in the case of breeding line POB 961-1344/13 (36.4%) and cv. ‘Kozak’ (34.3%). Statistically the highest average yield reduction was observed in year 2016, when a higher amount of rainfall, especially in July (just after inoculation) and higher temperature, compared to the long-term standard, were observed. During the period between inoculation and harvest, F. crookwellense was able to produce nivalenol, fusarenone X and zearalenone in oat kernels at the average level of 0.065 mg∙kg⁻¹, 0.026 mg∙kg⁻¹ and 0.015 mg∙kg⁻¹ respectively.

Opis:
A small assemblage of extremely well-preserved fragments of new sponges has been discovered in calcipelites of the middle Cambrian El Mogallón Formation in the Cerro El Mogallón section, near Arivechi in eastern Sonora, Mexico. The assemblage includes two new reticulosan species referred to Ratcliffespongia arivechensis sp. nov. and Valospongia sonorensis sp. nov., combined with disarticulated remains assigned to Kiwetinokia and additional, currently unidentifiable taxa. The new species represent the first records of these Cambrian genera from Mexico, although they are widely distributed at low latitudes, being previously best known from Utah but extending through Laurentia and South China. This middle Cambrian fauna indicates that there was considerable continuity of the deeper-water hexactinellid sponges between the warm peri-platform of Laurentia and the peri-continental Cambrian platform of Sonora. The new material supports the impression of extremely wide distribution of Cambrian sponge genera, with local diversification at species level within regions, in contrast to much greater generic-level endemism during the Ordovician Period.

Opis:
Diverse carbonaceous microfossils, including exceptionally preserved remains of non−biomineralizing metazoans, are reported from a basal middle Cambrian interval of the Kaili Formation (Guizhou Province, China). The application of a gentle acid maceration technique complements previous palynological studies by revealing a larger size−class of acritarchs, a richer assemblage of filamentous microfossils, and a variety of previously unrecovered forms. Metazoan fossils include Wiwaxia sclerites and elements derived from biomineralizing taxa, including chancelloriids, brachiopods and hyolithids, in common with previously studied assemblages from the early and middle Cambrian of Canada. In addition, the Kaili Formation has yielded pterobranch remains and an assemblage of cuticle fragments representing “soft−bodied” worms, including a priapulid−like scalidophoran. Our results demonstrate the wide distribution and palaeobiological importance of microscopic “Burgess Shale−type” fossils, and provide insights into the limitations and potential of this largely untapped preservational mode.
