Opis:
The conversion of old black pine plantations into ecologically more stable broadleaf forests is an important goal in many Mediterranean countries. Six experimental plots split between more and less productive sites were established in the sub-Mediterranean climate zone of south-western Slovenia in an area of mostly pure black pine stands. In November 2012 they were planted with six native broadleaf species (Celtis australis, Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Prunus avium, Juglans regia and Acer pseudoplatanus). The test plantations were intended to become small initial nuclei from which the introduced broadleaf species could later spread naturally into the old and partly degraded pine plantations. Seedling condition was assessed one year after planting. Based on their high survival rates after the first growing season, all tested species except F. sylvatica showed promising potential for future conversion of old pine stands in the Slovenian Karst region. However, the results of one growing season only are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. Of all planted species P. avium had the highest survival rate (95%) and was least susceptible to poor field conditions. Without exception, all species showed lower survival rate on the less productive site. Unlike other species, P. avium and J. regia seedlings had considerable height increment, while F. sylvatica had the lowest. From the results we can assume that perhaps old pine stands in the area have already considerably improved soil conditions and thereby enabled the introduction of broadleaves.

Opis:
Weed control is the most important constraint of autumn-sown chickpea production. Field experiments were conducted at three sites to evaluate the yield response of autumn-sown rainfed chickpea and weed control with PRE pendimethalin, POST pyridate, PRE isoxaflutole, preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) of imazethapyr through hand-weeded, untreated and weed free checks. The results showed that pyridate was the safest option for weed control in chickpea. The highest grain yield of chickpea was obtained with application of pyridate followed by isoxaflutolein three sites. Imazethapyr and metribuzin caused higher visual injuries than the other treatments. Furthermore, the applications of pyridate, isoxaflutole, metribuzin, and pendimethalin, as well as PRE and POST imazethapyr were found to reduce the total weed densities (averaged for three locations) by as much as 76, 75, 75.4, 43, 64, and 64.5% within 30 days after treatments, respectively.

Opis:
The article presents the results of studies on the mechanical properties of the broadleaf cattail Typha latifolia and reed sweet grass Glyceria maxima. The necessary study samples were collected from Lake Urszulewskie near Sierpc, Poland. The experiment was conducted using an Instron 5966 universal tensile strength testing machine. Tensile forces and the tensile strength of the individual parts of both plant species, i.e. below-ground stems (rhizomes), base of the stem and above-ground stems, were determined and compared with each other. The STATISTICA program was used for analysis. The calculated tensile strength values were compared to data of selected tree, shrub and plant species provided by other authors.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad właściwościami mechanicznymi pałki szerokolistnej Typha latifolia i manny mielec Glyceria maxima. Potrzebne do badań próbki pobrano z Jeziora Urszulewskiego koło Sierpca. Do analizy statystycznej użyto programu STATISTICA. Uzyskane wartości wytrzymałości na rozciąganie porównano z danymi dotyczącymi niektórych gatunków drzew, krzewów i roślin zielnych, podanymi przez innych autorów.

Opis:
Trees are long living organisms, rarely used in molecular experiments because of large size of the genome and long time of reproduction cycle. Sequencing data from Populus trichocarpa genome allowed for the development of research on the processes associated with tree biology such as secondary wood formation, long-term perennial growth, seasonal changes, biotic interactions, evolution etc. Reference data enable the investigation of non-model trees such as Quercus or Fagus, having ecological and economic significance. During projects scientists use genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic approaches which contribute to better understanding of the physiological processes regulating tree biology. Data collected from these multiple studies need to be integrated. The integration of data is the subject of the newly established field of science called systems biology. This review presents progress in tree research after finishing the sequencing project of Populus. It concentrates on modern trends in 'omics' and systems biology study of temperate broadleave trees during the last 10 years of studies.

Opis:
Testate amoebae (TA) are an important part of soil microbial communities and in certain ecosystems they may represent a substantial proportion of total microbial biomass. Their distribution and abundance is driven by various abiotic factors (e.g. pH, organic matter, soil moisture, soil/water chemistry) but comparatively less is known about the role of biotic interactions. TA often co-occur with Ericaceae, a ubiquitous plant family inhabiting acidic soils with poor nutrient status. Ericaceae can significantly change soil properties through production of recalcitrant litter and possibly also due to root exudates and activities of root-inhabiting fungi; this may result in profound modifications of microbial communities. A recent study from northwest England shows that the invasive ericaceous shrub Rhododendron ponticum may significantly modify communities of soil TA. Here, we investigate the effect of pH, organic matter, soil moisture and R. ponticum presence on TA communities within the native range of the ericaceous shrub at two sites in south Spain and compare our results with the previous study from NW England. At the Spanish sites, organic matter content, R. ponticum presence and pH affected occurrence and abundance of several TA species; R. ponticum presence and organic matter content were highly correlated and explained most of the observed variability in TA communities (= the effect of the R. ponticum rhizosphere). R. ponticum rhizosphere affected especially TA with relatively large tests, i.e. Cyclopyxis eurystoma, Phryganella acropodia and Trigonopyxis arcula. Interestingly, T. arcula was also positively associated with R. ponticum in the previously studied British sites. The rhizosphere of the ericaceous shrub appears to have a positive effect on testate amoebae taxon richness at the two studied autochthonous Spanish sites but may reduce taxon richness in the sites in Britain where R. ponticum is an introduced species. Such possible positive/negative effects of native/invasive species, as well as other plant guilds, on TA communities clearly deserve further investigation.
