Opis:: Based on a high number of in-depth interviews and three case studies, the article analyses and reconstructs the role of body practices in everyday experience of the working and rural classes in Poland. Contrary to what the self-help and media discourse might indicate, practices aimed at paying attention to one’s body and staying fit are not fixed points on the agenda of the working and rural classes, structuring the narrative of their everyday life. Their relationship to the body is dominated by work which is often directly connected with the body (physical work, providing care to someone). The study confirms earlier findings in this area according to which certain lifestyle elements cannot be analyzed in terms of “free choice”. Instead, they should be explored taking into account the inequalities that exist in the distribution of economic resources, workload and working conditions, as well as access to knowledge and health-care infrastructure.

Opis:: This paper analyzes cultural metaphors of emotions related to traditional healing in two Bantu languages, Swahili and Zulu, considering the relationship between language and cultural conceptualizations. Cross-linguistic studies have shown that emotional language and descriptions of character traits are an echo of cultural practices, ethnomedical resources, traditions and beliefs. Taking into account traditional healing practices in Swahili (uganga) and Zulu (umuthi), the author seeks to illustrate the cultural conceptualizations of the body that are involved in describing emotions, in order to shed light on the problematic correspondence between linguistic expression and cultural context in metaphorical processes. Examples of cultural metaphors in the two languages will show how the description of emotions draws from humoral theory, color symbolism and medical practices, which are also relevant to the treatment of diseases.

Opis:: The submitted paper focuses on the issue of corporeality, strictly spoken on the conjunction of an individual’s physical body with its bearer’s personal identity – examined within the context of the affiliation to religious groups. The attempt to find an answer to the basic issue of „Who am I” is not restricted to the nontangible realm of the human psyche, but is conditioned by the materiality of the human body as well and therewith extends into the world of physical appearances. Man’s material body is the place where the biological processes of life manifest themselves, with our sensory organs we experience the world’s physical reality. The possession of a physical body allows for religious activity. The human body turns into an object of special care and attention. Medical conditions in particular emphasize the human corporeality, especially when associated with pain experience. Similarly the consumption of psychotropic substances which provoke changes of consciousness, causes an enhanced bodyawareness. The strong correlation between personal identity and the body finds its expression in the parameter of a deeply experienced cohesive identity.

Opis:: The article is an attempt of the analysis and the interpretation of the categories ‘pleasure’ (Fr. plaisir) and ‘delight’ (Fr. jouissance), in the context of philosophically oriented theoretical‑literary considerations of Roland Barthes, sacrificed to the mystery of experiencing of the love. The part first, referring mainly to Barthes’ works, recognises the range of the semantic field plaisir and jouissance, as categories basic for the textual language of the outstanding theoretician. The second part introduces three examples of western cultural practices which illustrate the manner of use plaisir and jouissance as the factors of textual structures.

Opis:: Do we own our bodies? Do we control them during the meal, or does the meal control us? In this paper, we aim to examine the complex nexus of social and physical practices embedded in eating habits. During the examination of selected culinary advertisements, we will attempt to explain how food stabilizes, catalyzes, separates, and mediates social relations, as well as social and individual bodies. The paper merges the perspective of cultural anthropology, sociology of the body, and food studies.

Opis:: The purpose of this article is to analyse the competences of the supervisory authority provided for in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as a tool to shape the practice of personal data processing. This article verifies the thesis that the status of the supervisory authority formed in the GDPR, taking into account the authority’s independence, makes it possible to exercise the authority thoroughly, which is the basis for shaping personal data processing practice. Supervisory authorities have a wide range of powers to carry out the duties assigned to them. This is guaranteed by their independence. The exercise of powers resonates with all entities that fall under the jurisdiction of those authorities. The decisions of the authorities become the subject of interest of both the literature and personal data administrators. The powers connected with imposing administrative penalties might play a particular role. Their imposition causes that entities which are in similar circumstances may expect to be subject to the same penalties. In order to avoid this situation, they tend to adapt their practices to the model adopted in the decision. Opinions and recommendations, as well as codes of conduct approved by the supervisory authorities for particular sectors, which are a benchmark for administrators in those sectors, play an important preventive role.

Opis:: At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Polish government introduced a number of restrictions related to the use of public spaces. During a two-month period – from March to April 2020 – the authorities implemented provisions regulating “social distance,” imposing relevant limitations, introducing the obligation to cover mouth and nose, restrict- ing movement in public spaces, limiting the number of people in shops, public facilities and public transport, and later either eased or lifted those restrictions. An ethnographic study of the consequences of these restrictions, i.e., their social impact, requires both special approach and tools. In this paper, I present my efforts to develop such an approach, based on the combination of insights from Edward T. Hall’s proxemics and Marc Augé’s non-place theory, as well as phenomenology of the body and autoethnography. Based on autoethnographic notes, I present the outcomes of my endeavor – the description of my embodied experience of pandemic restrictions in non-places.

Opis:: Artykuł analizuje postanowienia ustawy o przeciwdziałaniu nieuczciwemu wykorzystaniu przewagi kontraktowej z perspektywy instytucjonalnej. Artykuł zawiera zestawienie argumentów przemawiających za tym, że przyjęte przez ustawodawcę rozwiązanie, polegające na przydzieleniu Prezesowi UOKiK roli organu odpowiedzialnego za wdrażanie ustawy, należy uznać za całkowicie chybione. Punktem odniesienia dla prowadzonych rozważań są postanowienia ustawy o ochronie konkurencji i konsumentów. Autorka postuluje powierzenie kompetencji do przeciwdziałania nieuczciwemu wykorzystaniu przewagi kontraktowej wyspecjalizowanemu organowi administracji sektora rolnego.
The article provides an analysis of the provisions of the Act on Counteracting Unfair Use of Superior Bargaining Power from an institutional perspective. A set of arguments is presented supporting the view of the incorrectness of the provision whereby the UOKiK President is responsible for the implementation of this Act. The rules of the Act on Competition and Consumer Protection provide a point of reference for the analysis contained in this article. The author stipulates that competences with respect to counteracting the unfair use of superior bargaining power should be transferred from the UOKiK President to a specialized administrative body in the agricultural sector.

Opis:: The book of essays Smrtni grijesi feminizma (The Deadly Sins of Feminism), written by Slavenka Drakulić, and Irena Vrkljan’s novel Svila, škare (The Silk, the Shears), both published in 1984, became the samples of feminist activism and the poetics of l’écriture féminine in Croatian literature. Considering their generic aspects and their narrative strategies focused on revealing the conflict between public/historical/political and personal/everyday/trivial, in our paper we will discuss Vrkljan’s novel as outstanding example of the emancipatory changes in the cultural field of the 1980’s. “Trivial as political” in Slavenka Drakulić’s writing, articulated through Irena Vrkljan’s autobiographical narrative, incites the emancipatory power of l’écriture féminine that simultaneously reflects the Other in itself, produces its own difference and writes without inscribing itself. This type of women’s writing, as previously defined by Hélène Cixous, is presented in Irena Vrkljan’s text as writing its own life that is “always in-between” and that undermines declared democratic values as much as the politics of literature, as understood by Jacques Rancière. Revealing discordances between poetic and social hierarchies, women’s writing makes changes in the partition of the visible and the sayable, in the intertwining of being and writing, body and words.
