    With this article I seek to build bridges between the different narrative elements where the body is situated as a central language, of experiences as a researcher in socio-cultural contexts of Bolivian indigenous peoples in the years 1984 and 1998. In this biographical period I have lived different reflective processes, frustrations, and successes that can contribute to an understanding of the framework of gender, ethnic, and political relations. This text, auto-ethnographic, enables us to see the deconstruction and subjective transformations in an androcentric context of a traditional Andean culture, as well as the investigative awareness achieved during interactions in the field. In my field work I have used tools from different disciplines (anthropology, sociology, social psychology), that are useful for validating the autoethnography as a methodological model to the gender autonomy, listening and learning the different ways of understanding corporal discourses. That is, I wish to recognize the value of various types of production and interpretation of knowledge, such as narration, arts, literature, film, and photography that favors emancipation of the peoples and their inhabitants.

    Współczesna kultura nadal silnie propaguje kult młodości i atrakcyjności ciała, jako atuty, które pozwalają osiągnąć w tym świecie szeroko definiowany sukces – zawodowy, towarzyski, osobisty. Szczególnie w przypadku kobiet ma to istotne znaczenie, ponieważ one tradycyjnie kojarzone są bardziej z cielesnością, ze swoim wyglądem i silniej się z nim identyfikują przez całe życie niż mężczyźni. Celem artykułu jest przyjrzenie się znaczeniu, jakie starsze kobiety przypisują wyglądowi – jak definiują atrakcyjność, w jaki sposób oceniają same siebie w tym względzie, czy dostrzegają sytuacje w swoim życiu, w których wygląd odegrał istotną rolę. Tekst powstał na podstawie wyników badań prowadzonych w ramach projektu „Kulturowe koncepcje płci i wieku, a postawy kobiet i mężczyzn wobec swego zdrowia i wyglądu” finansowanych przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki. Badania realizowano strategią jakościową, techniką wywiadów swobodnych (15) i zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych (2) z kobietami w wieku powyżej 63 lat. W analizie danych zastosowano perspektywę gender aged. Na podstawie badań ustalono, że starsze kobiety internalizują negatywny obraz starości jako tej nieatrakcyjnej, nieprzynoszącej żadnych profitów. Jednak częściej daje się zauważyć akceptację zachodzących zmian w ciele jako czegoś, co dotyczy wszystkich i jest procesem nieuchronnym. Nadal też postrzegają atrakcyjny, zadbany wygląd jako rodzaj kapitału, dzięki któremu kobieta niezależnie od swojego wieku może osiągać różne cele w wielu obszarach życia.
    Contemporary culture continues to strongly promote the cult of youth and attractiveness of the body which allows to achieve success in this world – professional, social, personal. This is particularly important in the case of women, because they are traditionally associated more with their appearance and identify with it more strongly throughout their lives than men. The aim of the article is to look at the importance older women attach to appearance – how they define attractiveness, how they judge themselves in this respect, whether they recognize situations in their lives in which appearance has played an important role. The text is based on the results of research conducted within the project “Cultural concepts of gender and age, and attitudes of women and men towards their health and appearance” financed by the National Science Centre. The research was carried out using a qualitative strategy, a technique of free interviews (15) and focused group interviews (2) with women over 63 years of age. The analysis of data is based on the gender aged perspective. Research has shown that older women internalize the negative image of old age as unattractive and unprofitable. However, one can more often notice the acceptance of changes occurring in the body as something that concerns everyone and is an inevitable process. They also still perceive an attractive, well-kept look as a kind of capital, thanks to which a woman, regardless of her age, can achieve various goals in many areas of life.

    Interested in the socio-cultural construction of the body and beauty, this study investigates the embodied experience of Black African women in South Africa. The Black female body has been problematically positioned in the discourses of beauty. In the dominant, Westernized imagery, the physical markers of blackness such as dark skin and kinky hair have been aesthetically devalued. In the African traditionalist discourses, these body features have been celebrated as beautiful and invoked as the signifiers of cultural pride. This, however, has also been considered as a form of cultural imperative that holds women accountable for how they embody their relationship with their race and ethnicity. Most recently, cultural critics notice the aesthetic revaluation of Black female beauty and ascribe it to the global popularity of the African-American hip-hop culture. In this study, we explore how the socio-cultural complexity of Black female beauty affects the ways in which individuals make sense of their bodies.

    The article presents the results of our independent qualitative research conducted in Polish theater circles. In-depth interviews have been conducted with fourth-year female students of acting faculties from four state theater schools and with lecturers working at these faculties. The aim of the study was to answer the question whether the theater has currently become a place where bodily images are being standardized and beauty canons reproduced. The research material gathered allows for the formulation of the following conclusions: 1) studying at a theater school significantly impacts the perception of one’s own body, 2) there is a widespread belief among the students concerning the importance of the body (and the beauty thereof) in the profession of an actor, which results in subjecting the body to some regimes, often destructive ones, 3) the pressure to have a perfect body is so strongly internalized in the theater circles that it becomes imperceptible to those who yield under this pressure.

    Consumer society has undergone various transformations in terms of group and social behaviors. Body estheticization is undoubtedly one of the essential phenomena involved. It depends on the improvement of the bodilyfeatures in order to increase its esthetic values, i.e. transformation of the body into a work of art. Body estheticization is characterized by complex factors such as: reliance on the established patterns of beauty promoted by media. The article assumes that beauty may be perceived not only from the socio-cultural perspective but also as an evolutionary phenomenon. In the light of the course of evolution, people has developed a mechanism of sexual selection which facilitatedthe choice of the right candidate on the basis of the essential parameters including:existence, survival and reproductive success. Among other mechanisms, the external appearance, beauty, body and its predispositions have become symbols of beneficial genes, used alsoas a particular kind of information for representatives of the opposite sex. The article discusses the evolutionary foundation of beauty and beauty standards, in particular: the cult of youth, beautiful body and its predispositions, which constitute a connection between evolutionary psychology, socio-biology and body estheticization.

    Celem artykułu jest przegląd teorii i badań empirycznych, dotyczących problematyki społecznego oraz subiektywnego obrazu ciała w procesie starzenia. W sferze publicznej panuje powszechne przekonanie, że wraz z wiekiem obniża się atrakcyjność, a według stereotypu starzy ludzie postrzegani są jako „brzydcy”. Wobec wyzwania, jakim jest starość, seniorzy dążą do utrzymania pozytywnej oceny swojej fizyczności, zarówno w dziedzinie wyglądu, jak i zdrowia. Nowe pokolenia kończące sześćdziesiąty rok życia ucieleśniają zmiany, wyrażające się w postaci dyskretnego wzrostu wydatków, wyższego poziomu aktywności fizycznej, przywiązywania większej wagi do reżimu diety i kondycji fizycznej oraz częstszego szukania pomocy w obszarze kosmetycznych i odmładzających technologii. Przeprowadzone analizy wskazały na to, że efekty naturalnego procesu starzenia podlegają społecznej stygmatyzacji. We współczesnym zachodnim społeczeństwie obsesja na punkcie młodzieńczego, pięknego wyglądu stała się powszechna, a jej rezultatem są procedury zmierzające do odwrócenia procesu starzenia. Potrzeba estetyzacji ciał i medialne epatowanie pięknem cenzurują starość w wymiarze cielesnym. W artykule szczególną uwagę poświęcono zagadnieniom zróżnicowania płciowego w kontekście starości. O ile można znaleźć liczne przykłady mężczyzn, będących bohaterami kultury masowej, którym „pozwolono” się zestarzeć, o tyle w przypadku kobiet obowiązkowe jest bycie „wiecznie młodą”.
    The purpose of this paper is to review theory and empirical research concerned with the problem of social and subjective body image among the elderly. There is a common perception among the public that age reduces attractiveness and older people tend to be stereotyped as “ugly”. Given the challenges of aging, older individuals strive to maintain positive evaluation of their physical selves both in domain of appearance and health. As newer cohorts of “over sixties” replace older cohorts, changes have become embodied in through increased levels of discretionary spending, greater levels of physical activity, more attention to diet and fitness regimes, more frequent recourse to cosmetic and rejuvenative technologies. The analysis has shown that there is a social stigma around the effects of the natural ageing process. Obsession with a youthful and beautiful appearance has become commonplace in modern western society and has resulted in procedures trying to reverse the aging process. The need for aeastheticization of bodies and media fixation on beauty functions as censorship of old age in the physical realm. Special attention was given the gender-related differences in aging. As there are examples of men presented in mass culture who were “allowed” to get old, in the case of women it is obligatory to be “forever young”.

    The article focuses on the problem of body aestheticiziation as a source of social prestige in the con- sumer society. It also contains an attempt to verify the thesis that the body aestheticization is used as a tool to multiply the resources of social prestige. The results of the research on aestheticization of the appearance presented in the paper indicate that firmly fixed beliefs about social benefits that result from physical attractiveness are strongly entrenched among consumers of the beauty market. Nearly half of Poles claim that the external appearance is one of the most important values – it plays a deci- sive role in both personal and professional success. These beliefs are also illustrated in an observable, statistical increase in the economic value of the Polish beauty market from the current PLN 16 billion to PLN 20 billion forecast for 2021. Additionally, the analysis of secondary data confirms the general thesis that the aestheticization of the body is used to increase social prestige.

    The aim of this article is to outline the cultural perception of scars based on the analysis of survey results and narrations collected during in-depth interviews. Katarzyna Bem-Kukulska presents an elaborate division of scars and discusses the borderline and ambivalence of this phenomenon in relation to the concepts of beauty and ugliness. The key to defining scars turns out to be the origin of their appearance and the assessment of the society.

    The article is devoted to the analysis of the dominant ideal of beauty in the Victorian period. The author defi nes mechanisms of repression and symbolic violence over the body of the Victorian upper-class woman, connected with the phenomenon of social control over the woman’s body and identity. The author assumes that the desire to achieve physical beauty has always been a source of a biographical experience that was constitutive for a woman, a source of a separate identity for her in comparison with a man. The historical changes of the ideals of the beautiful body are expressive of the complex interactions between the social roles of women and the dominant ideology of femininity as well as scientifi c and medical knowledge.

    Artykuł analizuje popularne na Zachodzie wyobrażenia o Chinach, których istotnym elementem jest ubiór i inne praktyki związane z modyfikacją wyglądu zewnętrznego kobiet. Trzy omawiane przykłady takich wyobrażeń – konstrukcji „chińskości” i „kobiecości” – osadzone są w różnych momentach historycznych, od drugiej połowy XIX wieku po dzień dzisiejszy. Zwyczaj krępowania stóp przez Chinki traktowany był przez cudzoziemców – początkowo wyłącznie mężczyzn, mających niewielkie możliwości kontaktu z kobietami chińskimi – jako jedna z miejscowych osobliwości. W szczycie epoki kolonialnej, na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, stał się dowodem na barbarzyństwo i zacofanie chylącego się ku upadkowi cesarstwa; znaczącą rolę w kształtowaniu takiego przekazu odegrały coraz liczniejsze podróżniczki i aktywistki europejskie i amerykańskie. Anonimowa chińska kobieta, prezentowana zachodniej publiczności poprzez zachodnie publikacje, była w nim ofiarą osobliwej praktyki kulturowej, a jednocześnie – co ciekawe – istotą pozbawioną seksualnej atrakcyjności dla nie-chińskiego mężczyzny. Haftowany pantofelek skrywający okaleczoną stopę stanowił wizualny znak takiego statusu. Suknia qipao wywoływała szereg odmiennych skojarzeń. Odwoływały się one początkowo do retoryki emancypacyjnej, poprzez związki z ubiorem męskim i etosem pierwszych Chinek podejmujących niedostępną dla nich przez wieki edukację. Następnie – do kosmopolitycznej i nowoczesnej elegancji oraz stylu życia, których ostoją był w pierwszej połowie XX wieku Szanghaj, a jednocześnie do wartości republikańskich i narodowych. Wizerunek kobiety w qipao zarówno w Chinach jak i poza nimi był kojarzony z modernizacją, ta zaś z kolei – z westernizacją. Hybrydowy fason tego stroju i związany z nim odcień erotyzmu, tym razem „zrozumiałego” dla cudzoziemców tak samo jak dla Chińczyków, doskonale się w tak pojmowaną modernizację wpisywał. Po kryzysie popularności qipao powróciło triumfalnie w końcu XX wieku, tym razem jednak jako nostalgiczny symbol tradycji i chińskiej tożsamości. Hanfu to ruch swoiście pojmowanej rekonstrukcji, istniejący w Chinach kontynentalnych od około dwudziestu lat, motywowany zarówno nacjonalistycznymi resentymentami jak i estetycznymi fascynacjami. Odwołuje się do czasów „prawdziwie chińskich” dynastii, widzianych jednak przez pryzmat współczesnej popkultury, a zwłaszcza kostiumowych filmów i seriali, często z elementami fantastyki. Udział w ruchu, w którym przeważają młode kobiety, jest obficie dokumentowany wizualnie. Wytwarzane i rozpowszechniane tą drogą obrazy krążą w ogromnych liczbach w chińskim internecie, ale coraz szerzej przenikają też do sieci globalnej. Kreują wizerunek Chinki jako idealnej piękności, delikatnej i zwiewnej, zafascynowanej przeszłością, a zarazem świadomej współczesnych wzorców urody i pilnie za nimi podążającej. Równie stereotypowy jak poprzednie, wizerunek ten wytwarzany jest w zdecydowanej większości w Chinach i przez same Chinki. W pewnym wymiarze odzyskują one w ten sposób kontrolę nad swoim obrazem, jednak wpisuje się on teraz w restrykcyjny i dyscyplinujący system ról społecznych własnego kręgu kulturowego.
    The article analyzes the ideas about China popular in the West, an important element of which is clothing and other practices related to the modification of the external appearance of women. The three discussed examples of such ideas – the construction of “Chineseness” and “femininity” – are set in various historical moments, from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. The practice of foot restraints by Chinese women was treated by foreigners – initially only men who had little contact with Chinese women – as one of the local peculiarities. At the height of the colonial era, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it became evidence of the barbarism and backwardness of the decaying empire; a significant role in shaping such a message was played by more and more European and American travelers and activists. The anonymous Chinese woman, presented to Western audiences through Western publications, was a victim of a peculiar cultural practice, and at the same time – interestingly – a creature devoid of sexual attraction to a non-Chinese man. An embroidered slipper concealing a mutilated foot was a visual sign of this status. The qipao dress evoked a number of different associations. Initially, they referred to the emancipatory rhetoric, through ties with men’s clothing and the ethos of the first Chinese women who undertook education unavailable to them for centuries. Then – to the cosmopolitan and modern elegance and lifestyle of which Shanghai was the mainstay in the first half of the 20th century, and at the same time to republican and national values. The image of a woman in qipao, both in China and elsewhere, was associated with modernization, which in turn – with westernization. The hybrid cut of this outfit and the associated shade of eroticism, this time “understandable” for foreigners as well as for the Chinese, fit perfectly into such a concept of modernization. After the crisis of popularity, qipao triumphantly returned at the end of the 20th century, but this time as a nostalgic symbol of Chinese tradition and identity. Hanfu is a movement of a peculiarly understood reconstruction, existing in mainland China for about twenty years, motivated by both nationalistic resentments and aesthetic fascinations. It refers to the times of “truly Chinese” dynasties, but seen through the prism of contemporary pop culture, especially period movies and series, often containing elements of fantasy. Participation in this movement dominated by young women is abundantly visually documented. The images produced and disseminated in this way circulate in enormous numbers on the Chinese Internet, but they are also increasingly penetrating the global network. They create the image of a Chinese woman as a perfect beauty, delicate and airy, fascinated by the past, and at the same time aware of contemporary beauty patterns and closely following them. As stereotypical as the previous ones, this image is produced mostly in China and by Chinese women themselves. To some extent, they regain control over their image, but now it fits into the restrictive and disciplining system of social roles in their own culture.

    Opis:
    Przedmiotem badania jest zależność pomiędzy pięknem a świętością w kaplicy Brata Klausa Petera Zumthora. Założono, zgodnie z intuicją i doświadczeniem Zumthora, że piękno można uznać za promieniowanie „rzeczy”, którego człowiek doświadcza jako zjednoczenie pełni własnego życia ze „światem”. Promieniowanie to w przypadku kaplicy określono Obliczem Świętości, przyjmując, że świętość jest atrybutem Boga i że jest ona udzielana człowiekowi, który dzięki temu staje się święty, a oblicze - to wyraz twarzy, za którym kryje się wewnętrzne życie osoby. Celem badania jest wykazanie, że piękno kaplicy Brata Klausa można ująć i przedstawić jako Oblicze Świętości, dające się człowiekowi doświadczać w kontemplacji za pośrednictwem percepcji zmysłowej. Metoda badania polega najpierw na wyodrębnieniu i opisaniu sześciu etapów historii kaplicy: procesu powstawania projektu i jego realizacji oraz sposobu trwania kaplicy jako bryły w krajobrazie i jako wnętrza architektonicznego. Za kryterium takiego wyodrębnienia przyjęto związek historii kaplicy z życiem jej inwestorów, patrona, architekta oraz z życiem „fizycznego ciała architektury”, rozumianego, zgodnie z wyjaśnieniem Zumthora, jako „kształt, który przybrał formę i służy życiu”. Następnie badanie polegało na zestawieniu wyodrębnionych etapów z treścią piętnastowiecznego Schematu Trójcy Św. i Świata, który pomagał św. Bratu Klausowi kontemplować tajemnicę Trójjedynego Boga i świata stworzonego, a którego odzwierciedlenie w postaci brązowego koła o sześciu promieniach wisi w kaplicy. Na podstawie tego zestawienia nakreślono schemat piękna jako Oblicza Świętości, który proponuje się przyjąć za wynik badania. Przedstawia on zależność między pięknem i świętością jako ich relację pulsującą ze względu na ciągłą przemianę jednego w drugie, dającą się opisać zjawiskiem promieniowania oraz porównać do procesu oddychania, warunkującego życie. Proponowany schemat przedstawia relację piękna i świętości w sposób obrazowy, pomagający człowiekowi kontemplować piękno jako Oblicze (percypowalne przez ludzkie zmysły) Świętości (niedostępnej percepcji zmysłowej), uchwycić zasadę wzajemnej wymienności i naprzemienności Świętości i piękna oraz sposób manifestacji Świętości w swym Obliczu. Na podstawie badania uznano, że piękno kaplicy Brata Klausa Petera Zumthora można ująć i przedstawić jako Oblicze Świętości.
    The focus of this research study is the interdependence between beauty and holiness in Peter Zumthor’s Bruder Klaus Field Chapel. Pursuant to Zumthor’s intuition and experience, it has been assumed that beauty can be considered the radiation of a ‘thing’, something a human being experiences as the fullness of their own life becoming one with “the world”. In the case of the chapel, this radiation has been described as a Countenance of Holiness, assuming that holiness, being the attribute of the Divine Person and that it is given to a human person, who, thanks to this, becomes holy, and a countenance is an expression of the face representing the inner life of both the Person and a person. The objective of the study is to demonstrate that the beauty of the Bruder Klaus Field Chapel can be conceived of and represented as a Countenance of Holiness, accessible to human experience in contemplation through sensory perception. The research method consisted in identifying and describing six stages in the history of the chapel: the design and construction processes as well as the mode of its existence as a shape in the landscape and as an architectural interior. As the criterion for such identification, it has been adopted the connection between the history of the chapel and the lives of its founders, namesake, and architect, as well as the life of the ‘physical body of architecture’, understood, according to Zumthor’s explanation, as a ‘shape moulded into a form that serves life’. Then, the research method consisted in the juxtaposition of identified stages with the content of the 15th century Diagram of the Holy Trinity and the World, the aid used by Brother Klaus in contemplating the Triune God and the created world, featured in the chapel in the form of a bronze wheel with six rays attached to a wall. That juxtaposition provided the basis for drawing a diagram of beauty as a Cuntenance of Holiness, which is proposed as the result of the research. The diagram demonstrate the interdependence between beauty and holiness as a pulsating relation occasioned by the continual transformation of each into the other, describable in terms of the phenomenon of radiation and comparable to the breathing process, a condition of life. The proposed diagram represents this relation in an illustrative way, showing beauty as a countenance (perceptible to human senses) of holiness (inaccessible to sensory perception), capturing the mutual interchangeability and alternateness of holiness and its countenance, and the mode of the manifestation of holiness in its Countenance, determined here as beauty. The study has demonstrated that the beauty of Peter Zumthor’s Bruder Klaus Field Chapel can be conceived of and represented as a Countenance of Holiness.
