Opis:
This study investigated changes in the coagulation profile of 10 healthy female dogs subjected to ovariohysterectomy. Blood samples were collected three times – before, directly after and 24 h after surgery. Plasma samples were analyzed to determine thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen content, D-dimer content and antithrombin (AT) III activity. The results revealed post-operative haemostatic system disorders related to prolonged APTT, higher fibrinogen and D-dimer concentrations and lower levels of AT III activity.

Opis:
Blood donation allows to obtain blood and its components from healthy people in a bid to help treatment of anonymous individuals, relying on timely and sufficient supplies of matching blood. Being a social initiative, it depends on multiple factors. Those factors are possible to be shaped and are subject to research. This paper aims to present the dynamics of change in spatial dependencies determining development of blood donation in Poland from 2005 to 2010. Spatial analysis of data enables identification of similarities and differences between voivodeships in a given period. Testing of hypothesis concerning spatial autocorrelation was carried out using tools of spatial statistics. This paper's subject matter concentrates on pointing towards the direction and extent of changes illustrated with an example of analysis investigating the number of blood donations per hospital bed in wards with high demand on blood and its components. The number of blood donors per 1000 residents in 18 - 65 age was also analysed.

Opis:
Brachycephalic syndrome develops as a result of a specific build of splanchnocranium. In dogs of brachycephalic breeds, an impairment of correct gas exchange occurs. 5 French bulldogs at the age of 11-14 months, which suffered from continuous mixed-type dispnoea and lowered effort tolerance, were examined. Apart from the above-mentioned symptoms, the occurrence of strong external nostril stenosis was noted in the clinical examination. The symptoms observed together with the nostril stenosis indicated a possibility of an occurrence of the brachycephalic syndrome. 1 ml of full blood was drawn from the femoral artery. Acid-base balance parameters were determined in the arterial blood: pH, pCO₂, HCO₃ -, and pO₂. The wing-of-the-nostrils correction procedure were carried out in general anaesthesia. In premedication, the patients received medetomidine and after 15 minutes, fentanyl together with atropine. The induction of propofol was carried out. After four weeks from the procedure, blood was collected and the acid-base balance and pO₂ parameters were again determined. The obtained values of the acid-base balance and pO₂ parameters showed a noticeable influence of the wing-of-the-nostrils correction procedure on the values of the parameters determined. The results of the blood gasometry obtained prior to the procedure clearly indicate the occurrence of respiratory acidosis. The correction of wings of the nostrils significantly influenced saturation of the arterial blood with oxygen and the symptoms of dispnoea observed by the owners and episodes of apnoea and the loss of consciousness entirely subsided.

Opis:
Changes in the concentration of selected minerals in milk and blood of high- milking cows during lactation. The aim of this research was the analysis of the content of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in milk and blood of Polish Holstein-Frisian (PHF) milking cows during full lactation. The research was conducted on 100 PHF cows during two years (50 cows in each year). Samples of milk and blood were taken in each month of lactation (10 samples) in order to determine minerals concentration. Additionally, samples of forage were pooled out. Study revealed that the level of calcium in the feed is too low, the level of phosphorus – optimal, whereas the content of magnesium exceeds animal demand. There were significant differences in the content of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the consecutive months of lactation. The content of minerals in blood was normal; similar situation was observed in the case of the calcium and phosphorus in milk, with the exception of milk magnesium concentration, which was too low and most diversified during the lactation.
Zmiany zawartości wybranych składników mineralnych w mleku i krwi krów wysokomlecznych w okresie pełnej laktacji. Próbki mleka i krwi pobierano w każdym miesiącu laktacji (10 pobrań) i określano w nich zawartość składników mineralnych.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of the study has been to analyze the epidemiological data on sharp injuries among health care workers before and after the implementation of regulations related to the conduct of the register of sharp injuries. Material and Methods: We hypothesized that the introduction of legislation would change the existing low reportability of sharp injuries and reporting incidents would increase. In Poland the binding regulations, dating back to 2013, require the employer to keep a record of sharp injuries. Therefore, we compared the data from before and after the entry regulations. Data was collected from the records of occupational exposure/accidents at work in hospitals in the Łódź Province during 2010–2014. The feedback came from 36 hospitals (return index = 51.5%), representing a total annual average of 13 211 medical workers. Results: The incidence of injuries did not change significantly over the period 2010–2014, and the number of reported injuries in 2014 (the year when the Regulation had already been effective) was even lower than in the previous years. The average annual injury index was 12.31 injuries per 1000 employees (95% confidence interval: 11.48–13.16/1000). The incidence of injuries among nurses was significantly higher than in other groups of medical professionals (p < 0.05). These injuries most often occur while using needles (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The obligation to record occupational exposures set forth in current regulations is not likely to improve the reliability of reporting the incidents actually taking place. Further research should focus on identifying barriers to reporting cases of exposure to potentially infectious material. Action should be taken to raise awareness of medical personnel about the possible effects of exposure to infectious material, in particular, the benefits of the implementation of early post-exposure procedures. Perhaps it will increase the reporting frequency of sharp injuries of medical personnel. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(1):37–46

Opis:
In the literature available hitherto there are many reports on enzymatic changes in tissues and a correlated rise in enzymatic activity in blood serum during experimental and human trichinellosis. In this study we were characterised proteinase activity in crude extracts from muscles of mice infected with Trichinella spiralis and T. pseudospiralis and the dynamics of their changes in different stages of disease. The activity of proteinase in muscle of mice infected with T. spiralis showed an increase in the 1 st- 5th week post infection, and then a slight decrease. The biggest proteinase activity was observed in 5th- 6th week post infection. In the muscle of mice infected with T. pseudospiralis the increase of proteinase activity was observed in 1st-4th week post infection. In the 4th week the activity reached its maximum and in the 5th- 10th week post infection there was a decrease of the activity in comparison with the control. As we could see, the dynamics of the changes of proteinase activity in mice is similar in the case of the disease with other biochemical and immunological indices observed in trichinellosis and with the increase of regeneration and transformation processes observed in histopathological studies.
