Opis:
The conversion of old black pine plantations into ecologically more stable broadleaf forests is an important goal in many Mediterranean countries. Six experimental plots split between more and less productive sites were established in the sub-Mediterranean climate zone of south-western Slovenia in an area of mostly pure black pine stands. In November 2012 they were planted with six native broadleaf species (Celtis australis, Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Prunus avium, Juglans regia and Acer pseudoplatanus). The test plantations were intended to become small initial nuclei from which the introduced broadleaf species could later spread naturally into the old and partly degraded pine plantations. Seedling condition was assessed one year after planting. Based on their high survival rates after the first growing season, all tested species except F. sylvatica showed promising potential for future conversion of old pine stands in the Slovenian Karst region. However, the results of one growing season only are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. Of all planted species P. avium had the highest survival rate (95%) and was least susceptible to poor field conditions. Without exception, all species showed lower survival rate on the less productive site. Unlike other species, P. avium and J. regia seedlings had considerable height increment, while F. sylvatica had the lowest. From the results we can assume that perhaps old pine stands in the area have already considerably improved soil conditions and thereby enabled the introduction of broadleaves.

Opis:
Although intraspecies researches within the black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) have a long tradition, the intraspecies taxonomy, classification and chorology are still unclear. Among the numerous reasons that have caused this situation the most important are: the absence of a study that would completely cover the whole range of this species, the impossibility of connection of results of the existing detailed studies of certain areas, and the high variability of traits which have been used so far. Since the characteristics of the molecular systematic techniques could make possible the research free of the mentioned shortages, the intention of this study was to determine the relationships among nine populations of black pine using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The obtained results were compared to the recent results of the morphological and anatomical analysis of the leaves of the same populations. The RAPD results clearly divided the Croatian populations from populations of Austria (subsp. nigra) and Turkey (subsp. pallasiana), while among Croatian populations, as in previous study, the existence of several groups (subsp. illyrica, subsp. dalmatica and transitional population between them) was noticed. It is assumed that the optimisations conducted in this study will finally make possible estimating the relationships on the level of the whole range of the black pine and the classification based on molecular traits that are probably less dependent on environmental influences than it has been the case with the characteristics mostly used so far.

Opis:
In this paper we show spatial carbon isotope variations in black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) needles, collected in spring 2001 and autumn 2003, from trees at the coast of south-western Croatia island (Žirje) and southern Spain (Benalmadena near Malaga), respectively. Needles were segmented perpendicularly to the longer axis (base, middle and top) and each segment was analysed separately. d13C values in needles from Croatia varied between -26.65‰ to -24.43‰ (2 months old needles) and from -28.25‰ to -25.21‰ (1 year old needles), while d13C values in needles from Spain varied from -27.58‰ to -25.27‰. The difference between d13Cb (base) and d13Ct (top) in the same needle (D13Cb-t) varied from 1.85 to 2.05‰ (in young needles from Croatia), from 0,02 to 1,80‰ (young needles from Spain), and 1.16 to 2.32‰, (in old needles from Croatia). The average D13Cb-t values were 0.78‰ and 1.73‰ in Spain and Croatia, respectively. In each needle the base of the needle was always 13C-enriched as compared to the top of the same needle. This evidences that carbon isotopes are not retranslocated after its fixation into the leaf structure (after the growth process is over). Temperature variation was most probably negligible for the discovered intraneedle carbon isotope distribution. Although, the intraneedle carbon isotope inhomogeneity can be partly the result of seasonal variation in d13C of atmospheric CO2, most probably the remarkably high D13Cb-t values, and regular pattern, are predominantly resulting from isotopic and chemical composition of primary and secondary products contained in the growin part of needle and kinetic isotope fractionation during decomposition of storage materials at the base.

Opis:
Environmentally friendly new wood preservative surface materials were developed to protect the wood surface against outdoor conditions. The durability performance of different types of waterborne acrylic resin with bark extract used as coatings on a wood surface exposed to outdoor conditions was investigated. Scots pine and Oriental beech surfaces were coated with three different waterborne acrylic resin coatings. Bark extracts from two different trees (fir and black pine) and a commercial UV absorber were used in the acrylic resin coating formulations. The durability of the coatings containing these bark extracts were compared with that of the coating with a commercial UV absorber. The wood samples coated with the test and control coatings were exposed to the QUV test in laboratory conditions. The surface colour and roughness changes on the wood samples coated with the test coatings and exposed to the accelerated weathering test were compared with the control samples. Microscopic images were taken, and the coating thicknesses of the control and test samples prepared before the outdoor test were determined. The results showed that the protective effect of the acrylic coating system containing fir bark extracts in QUV test conditions over 2016 h was similar to that of the coating containing commercial UV absorbers. However, while the fir bark extract’s antioxidant effect positively affected the beech wood to increase durability in outdoor conditions, it had a lower preservative effect on the pine wood.

Opis:
The potential of immature zygotic embryos to produce embryogenic tissue was tested using culture media differed in inorganic salt composition as well as plant growth regulator content. Explants cultured on DCR as well as MLV media gave the highest initiation percentages with maximum values of 8.8% (MLV) to 10.4% (DCR). Plant growth regulators content (standard or reduced) had no profound effect on embryogenic tissue initiation. Somatic embryo maturation as well as germination was dependent on the cell line and salt composition of the medium. Plantlet regeneration occurred in three cell lines out of five tested. During the maturation process profound changes occurred in the internal organisation of somatic embryos such differentiation of root meristem in precotyledonary somatic embryos and formation of provascular strands in cotyledonary somatic embryos.
