    Opis:
    This article demonstrates the list of seventy-three clergymen who were ordained by Przemyśl Bishop Maciej Drzewicki in Lublin in 1506. The majority of the ordained came from the area of Lublin Archdeaconry and this is the first publication of that documentary proof that has been unrecognised in literature so far. The list has survived in the books of Przemyśl bishops, which means that in similar documentary proofs various pieces of information extending beyond the boundaries of one diocese may be found. It has been confirmed that the procedure of ordaining and preparatory activities for clerics to be set up for this celebration (examinations) were typical for all dioceses regardless of their location. In the field of granting commission, the secular patronage prevailed to be mainly represented by local noble families. The lists of the ordained, among whom also the clergymen from various dioceses may be found, is comparable to the research on distribution of the lower clergy in the territory of the Republic of Poland.

    Dar reform and renewal of pastoral offered to the Church the mid-sixteenth century in the resolutions of the Council of Trent, implemented and put into practice the particular Churches by successive centuries been zealously and fruitfully undertaken by Bishop Matthias Łubieński and with great gusto on three synods, two diocesan in 1634 and 1641 r. and at the Synod for archdeaconry of Pomerania in 1640. Their resolutions have become not only an opportunity to carry out pastoral renewal of the Church of Wloclawek, but also helped to deepen knowledge of and respect for the law and become an effective instrument to preserve the unity and discipline of the Church in the diocese, as well as the introduction of the Tridentine reform. Placed firmly in the conciliar decrees and resolutions of provincial synods statutes governed the many sectors of pastoral life of the diocese then Kuyavian-Pomeranian activating pastors, and engaging religiously and morally lay faithful. This outstanding legislator, reformer and supporter of the renewal of the Tridentine Church and its pastoral structures, he realized that the renewal of pastoral care and repair of life of religious and moral needs to find its origin in the reform of the clergy, maintaining discipline and discipline of the Church and in the life and behavior of the clergy in line with the spirit the priestly vocation. Resolutions of the Synod of Bishop Łubieński were a manifestation of his zeal legislative, - a reformist. Strongly urged by the harmonization of laws relating to the sacramental life, the discipline of the clergy and the development of religious life, while the development of pastoral care. His legislative activity, legal and pastoral was as structured, broad and comprehensive. She referred first to the fact purely legislative activity, and also had a practical nature, as refer to and serve the renewal of pastoral care and religious life of the faithful. Pastoral renewal efforts also served to reinforce the organization deaneries and the revival of activity deans, among others, in the control of pastoral remind parish priests of their duties in the field of studying parishioners, care for the sick and the poor, regulations relating to the defense of the Catholic faith threatened the Reformation, the regulations relating to teach the truths of the faith, teaching catechetical exercise and the sacraments, worship of God, and affairs liturgical celebrations. It all had to serve the post-conciliar renewal of pastoral ministry in the Church Wloclawek.
    Dar reformy i odnowy duszpasterskiej ofiarowany Kościołowi połowy XVI wieku w uchwałach Soboru Trydenckiego, realizowany i wprowadzany w życie Kościołów partykularnych przez kolejne wieki, został gorliwie i owocnie podjęty przez biskupa Macieja Łubieńskiego i to z wielkim rozmachem na trzech synodach, dwóch diecezjalnych w 1634 i 1641 r. oraz na synodzie odbytym dla archidiakonatu pomorskiego w 1640 r. Ich uchwały stały się nie tylko okazją do przeprowadzenia odnowy duszpasterskiej Kościoła włocławskiego, ale także przyczyniły się do pogłębienia znajomości i szacunku dla prawa oraz stały się skutecznym instrumentem do zachowania jedności i karności kościelnej w diecezji, jak też wprowadzania reformy trydenckiej. Osadzone mocno w dekretach soborowych oraz statutach prowincjonalnych uchwały synodów normowały wiele sektorów życia duszpasterskiego ówczesnej diecezji kujawsko-pomorskiej, uaktywniając samych duszpasterzy, jak i angażując religijnie i moralnie wiernych świeckich. Ten wybitny ustawodawca, reformator i zwolennik odnowy trydenckiej Kościoła i jego struktur duszpasterskich, zdawał sobie sprawę, że odnowa duszpasterstwa i naprawa życia religijno-moralnego musi znaleźć swój początek w reformie duchowieństwa, zachowaniu karności i dyscypliny kościelnej oraz w życiu i postępowaniu duchownych zgodnym z duchem powołania kapłańskiego. Uchwały synodalne biskupa Łubieńskiego były przejawem jego gorliwości ustawodawczo – reformistycznej. Usilnie zabiegał o ujednolicenie przepisów prawnych odnoszących się do życia sakramentalnego, dyscypliny duchowieństwa oraz rozwoju życia religijnego, a jednocześnie rozwoju duszpasterstwa. Jego działalność ustawodawcza i prawno-duszpasterska była w miarę usystematyzowana, szeroka i całościowa. Odnosiła się bowiem najpierw do działalności czysto ustawodawczej, a także miała charakter praktyczny, gdyż odnosiła się i służyła odnowie duszpasterstwa i życia religijnego wiernych. Odnowie duszpasterstwa służyły też podejmowane wysiłki zmierzające do usprawnienia organizacji dekanatów oraz ożywienie działalności dziekanów, m.in. w zakresie kontroli duszpasterstwa, przypominania proboszczom ich powinności w zakresie poznawania parafian, opieki nad chorymi i ubogimi, zarządzenia odnoszące się do obrony wiary katolickiej zagrożonej reformacją, regulacje odnoszące się do nauczania prawd wiary, nauczania katechetycznego, sprawowania i przyjmowania sakramentów, kultu Bożego i spraw liturgicznych. To wszystko miało służyć posoborowej odnowie duszpasterstwa w diecezji włocławskim.

    Na początku lat 90. XIV w. po nominacji na biskupstwo przemyskie Macieja, dotychczasowego kanclerza królowej Jadwigi, doszło do konfliktu z miejscową szlachtą na tle świadczeń dziesięcinnych. Nowy biskup powoływał się na otrzymane od papieża prawo pobierania dziesięciny snopowej, tymczasem od czasów Kazimierza Wielkiego na terenach Rusi Czerwonej stosowano dziesięcinę pieniężną i to w znacznie niższym wymiarze niż w pozostałych częściach monarchii. Do ugody doszło dopiero za pośrednictwem króla Władysława najpewniej latem 1394 r. Mimo to, część szlachty nadal sprzeciwiała się wprowadzeniu nowych wyższych stawek. Groźba przysądzenia realnych, snopowych dziesięcin spowodowała zakończenie konfliktu, którego ostatnim akordem było potwierdzenie w 1406 r. przez biskupa przemyskiego pobierania dziesięciny w pieniądzu oraz swobodnego charakteru dziesięciny z łanów folwarcznych.
    At the beginning of the last decade of the 14th century a conflict was started with the local nobility concerning the payment of tithe. The new bishop Maciej claimed the right received from the Pope to levy the sheaf tithe, while from the times of Casimir the Great in Red Ruthenia a lower rate of tithe was in effect. The settlement was reached only through the mediation of King Ladislaus, probably in the summer of 1394. Nevertheless, some noblemen still opposed the new rates. It was only the threat of enforcing sheaf tithe that stopped the conflict, the last stage of which was the confirmation by the bishop in 1406 that tithe in the Przemyśl diocese had to be paid in coin, while the form of that from the grange fields might be freely decided.

    Directories play an important role in pastoral life of every diocese. In Poland, the first known prints of this type come from the sixteenth century. They include liturgical calendar with the local celebrations, pastoral directives, a list of institutions and clergy working in the diocese. Directories are issued by the authority of the bishop. In the past, publishing them provided the opportunity to print bishop’s family crest and an appropriate Latin poem on the first page. From the period of the rule of the Bishop of Chełm Maciej Grzegorz Garnysz († 1790) there remained 4 directories exposing the Garnysz family crest - Poraj. The  authors of the poems included in the above-mentioned prints are unknown. These poems are in the form of epigrams. In terms of the composition, they are short lyric poems with four- and six-line stanzas, written in elegiac couplet. In this article, they were reprinted and translated into Polish. Their analysis and translation are completely new phenomena, as in Poland there are no other works presenting translation or a study of the poems included in directories.

    The study contains an analysis of the lists of the ordained priests from the book of duties of Ordinary Maciej Drzewicki,  (Diocesan Archive in Włocławek, Ref. ABKP 2 [19]). The lists from the years 1516-1529 contain a total of 300 seminarians, who were ordained an acolyte, a sub-deacon, a deacon and a presbyter. They were ordained by a bishop (in one case also by a suffragan). The entries include the  personal data of the ordained (their names, nicknames and the place of their origin), and as for sub-deacons, deacons and presbyters, also on what grounds they were ordained. Under the rule of Bishop Maciej Drzewicki in Włocławek ordination took place mostly in the Cathedral in Włocławek during the Easter season (mainly on Great Saturday). Among those ordained was a large group of candidates from outside the Bishopric of Włocławek – those were people with benefices in this diocese or the ones presented for ordination by the local clergy. The vast majority of the candidates for higher ordination (subdiaconate, diaconate and presbyterate) were recommended by prelates or canons of the local chapters, nobility or city councils of the cities in Kujawy and Pomerania. This article also contains the source edition of the analyzed material.

    "The Domestic Notes" by Bishop Maciej Wołonczewski (Motiejus Valančius) as a contribution to the knowledge of the social and linguistic situation on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the rule of the tsarsThe article introduces the interesting, albeit controversial, figure of Maciej Wołonczewski (Motiejus Valančius), an important member of the nineteenth-century clergy, and his Polish-language legacy. The bishop of Samogitia’s "Domestic Notes" document persecutions of the Catholic Church in Lithuania after the November and January Uprisings at the hands of Russian Tzarist authorities, and reflect the state of Polish language and its social functions in this historical period.Valančius’ manuscripts, published in the volume edited by the historians Aldona Prašmantaitė and Jan Jurkiewicz [Motiejus Valančius, Namų užrašai (The Domestic Notes), Vilnius: Baltos Lankos, 2003], were subjected to the far-reaching standardization of spelling, thus they are not a reliable source for a linguistic research. A linguist, who would make the effort of describing the Polish language of the author, should therefore locate and take advantage the original sources, dispersed in various archives in Vilnius. "Домашние записки" епископа Матвея Волончевского. К вопросу о социальной и языковой обстановке на территории бывшего Великого княжества Литовского во время царского правленияСтатья приближает интересную, но спорную, личность священника XIX-го века и его письменное наследие на польском языке. Заметки епископа Матвея Волончевского документируют репрессии, применяемые царским правительством по отношению к Католической церкви в Литве после восстаний против царской власти, и – одновременно – отражают состояние тогдашнего польского языка и его общественные функции. Изданные в научной разработке историков: Альдоны Прашмантайте и Яна Юркевича рукописи Волончевского [Motiejus Valančius, Namų užrašai (Домашние заметки), Vilnius: Baltos lankos, 2003] сильно кодифицированы и не могут быть достоверным источником лингвистических исследований. Лингвист, который захочет изучить польский язык жемайтского автора, будет вынужден работать с подлинниками, разбросанными по разным вильнюсским архивным фондам.

    Niniejszy artykuł skupia się na najbliższej rodzinie biskupa włocławskiego Macieja z Gołańczy. Maciej został biskupem po śmierci swego wuja biskupa włocławskiego Gerwarda. Po nim biskupem został jego bratanek Zbylut. Życiorys biskupa Macieja jest szerokim tematem, dlatego na potrzeby niniejszego artykułu zbadano życiorysy członków najbliższej rodziny Macieja. Badania obejmują życiorys ojca Macieja Sławnika kasztelana nakielskiego. Skupiono się również na jego żonie Małgorzacie, siostrze Gerwarda poprzednika Macieja na stanowisku biskupa włocławskiego. Artykuł opisuje także Świętosława najstarszego syna Sławnika i Małgorzaty, wojewodę tczewskiego walczącego o ziemie pomorskie podczas ataku krzyżackiego. Jako ostat-niego przybliżono postać Zbyluta, średniego syna Sławnika, który także walczył u boku Władysława Łokietka. Artykuł ponadto opisuje pochodzenie biskupa Macieja, a mianowicie jego przynależność do rodu Pałuków, w tym odnotowano wygląd herbu rodowego Pałuków.
    The present article focuses on the closest family of the Bishop of Włocławek Maciej of Gołańcza. Maciej took over the bishopric after the death of his uncle, the Bishop of Włocławek, Gerward. After his death the bishopric was in turn taken over by his nephew, Zbylut. Beacause Bishop Maciej’s biography constitutes a wide topic, for the purpose of the present article, the biographies of the closest members of his family have been examined. The research includes the biography of Maciej’s father, Sławnik, the Castellan of Nakło. The article also focuses on his wife Małgorzata, the sister of Gerward – Maciej’s predecessor as the Bishop of Włocławek. The article also describes Świętosław, the eldest son of Sławnik and Małgorzata, the Voivode of Tczew, who fought for Pomerania during the Teutonic attack. Last but not least, the article describes Zbylut, the middle son of Sławnik, who fought at the side of Władysław the Elbow-high. Moreover, the article discusses the descent of Bishop Maciej, namely his affiliation to the House of Pałuka and describes their coat of arms.

    An extremely important role in maintaining the clergy’s high religious-moral level in the Church in the West was played by brotherhoods of priests (fraternitates presbyterorum) that were established starting from the 9th century. Their aim was a continuous formation of their members, mutual spiritual and material aid, and praying for the dead confreres. From Gaul, where they were first established (Reims), they soon spread to the neighboring countries, among others to Germany, Italy and Spain. They reached Poland in the 13th century becoming one of the important factors of reformation of the clergy. In the Przemyśl Diocese of the Latin rite (established about the middle of the 14th century) brotherhoods open to the clergy (and also lay people, according to the so-called filadelfia principle) appeared in the first half of the 15th century, and by the end of the 17th century they spread to its whole territory. As the first one the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary Rzeszów-Tyczyn Brotherhood of Priests (Fraternitas Sacerdotalis in ecclesiis et districtibus Rzeszoviensi et Tyczynensi), that the author discusses here, was established. First it was active in the Rzeszów and Tyczyn regions, and from the end of the 16th century within the Rzeszów Decanate. It was a grass-roots initiative of a group of clergymen, and then it was officially approved of by the Przemyśl Bishop Maciej in 1419. Its statute described the structure of the brotherhood, defined its aims, means of work and the disciplinary issues. It devoted quite a lot of attention to the questions connected with the ultimate matters, like preparation for death, funeral, aid for the soul of the dead one, and so on. Indulgence privileges were supposed to encourage the members to diligently take part in the meetings and celebrations of the brotherhood that took place periodically. A great role in the life of the Brotherhood was played by sessions convened initially once every three months, and then twice a year, that were usually attended by all its members as well as its lay sympathizers. The sessions took place in Tyczyn and Rzeszów, alternately. The devotion during a session had a set order: first the mourning office was sung and the Holy Mass was celebrated with a procession and with stations for the late brothers, next a solemn Holy Mass was said about the Holy Spirit, with the exposition of the Sacrament and the procession and a sermon. After the devotion a debate was held with a scrutiny concerning the life of the confreres, and in the later period also concerning the state of their churches. Also the more difficult cases of moral theology were discussed. When all the items on the agenda had been discussed the confreres went to a meal, in which only priests could participate. Some of the most important aims of the Brotherhood was the promotion of the cult of God, ensuring profuse spiritual gifts to the living brothers, and prayer aid to those, who had already passed away. In the current of this type of actions (collective as well as individual) various religious funds were contained (the first one in 1492), including altar prebends (the first one in 1639). In consequence in the middle of the 18th century the Brotherhood had the right of patronage over four altar prebends. The Rzeszów Brotherhood was quite active practically throughout the 17th century, however, in the next century its deep crisis was revealed, which was caused to a considerable degree by external factors. It also affected the other priest communities in the diocese, which had an adverse influence on the formative work among the clergy. Brotherhoods were revived in the diocese by the zealous Przemyśl priest, Bishop W. H. Sierakowski (1742-1760). After an in-depth examination of the situation, on 5 May 1760 in Brzozów he issued a directive to all the brotherhoods in the diocese, in which he described in detail the reforms that were to be effected. Introduction of a uniform and to some degree centralized structure of the brotherhood in the diocese was an important novelty; it was adjusted to its new territorial structure introduced in 1751 (3 archdeaconates). Instead of about a dozen small, independent brotherhoods existing in particular deaconates, the Bishop organized three big ones, each of which was to function in one of the archdeaconates. Each one was to be headed by the provost elected for life. At the same time Bishop Sierakowski ordered all the brotherhoods to keep to the reformed statute of the Sanok-Krosno Brotherhood. The reform of 1760, although it was not fully implemented (the new structure based on the network of archdeaconates was not accepted), gave a new impulse to the work of all priest brotherhoods in the Przemyśl Diocese (including the Rzeszow-Tyczyn one), which is confirmed by the preserved official reports dating back to that time. It should be stressed that the reform introduced by Bishop W. H. Sierakowski gave sound foundations for further fruitful work of priest brotherhoods in the diocese for a long time. However, their fate was unexpectedly decided by external factors. In consequence of the first partition of Poland in 1772 the Przemyśl Diocese was annexed by Austria that soon abolished the system existing in Poland and introduced its own in its place. All former institutions of the Polish Republic that were incompatible with the vision of an „enlightened state” ruled in an absolutist way were abolished. Also the Catholic Church was subjected to utter control as well as to numerous restrictions and transformations that were supposed to make it completely subject to the state and make it an obedient tool for the lay authorities. These actions, presented as a „reform of the Church”, were taken in the name of the political-ecclesial system obtaining in Austria at that time that was called „Josephinism”. Ruthless and consistent interference of the lay authorities into the life of the Church in a few years led to liquidation of many Church institutions that played a great role in the religious life of the community of the faithful. Also all religious brotherhoods were the aim of a furious attack, including the ones to which priests belonged, whose profile did not correspond with the vision of the „enlightened state”. They were abolished by the Austrian authorities on 22 May 1783, and in their place the court decree of 9 August 1783 established the „Association for Active Love of the Neighbor” that was subjected to the control of the state. These actions also meant the end of the Rzeszow-Tyczyn Brotherhood of Priests, deserved in the field of forming and sanctifying numerous generations of priests as well as of lay people.

    In April 1927 the Holy Father Pious XI appointed Rev. Karol Radoński, pastor of the church of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus and St. Florian in Poznań, coadjutor bishop of August Hlond, the archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań. In the literature of the subject it is assumed that the Episcopal nomination took place on 8 April, 1927, even though from an analysis of press accounts of the period it follows that the news was made public only on 22 April. The article, based on source documents, describes the circumstances of the nomination of Rev. K. Radoński as coadjutor bishop and the press context of the event. The nomination was preceded by a press leak about Rev. Józef Kłos, editor-in-chief of ,,Przewodnik Katolicki" as supposedly suggested for the post by Primate Hlond.

    Z fundacji biskupa warmińskiego Krzysztofa Andrzeja Jana Szembeka ze Słupowa (1680 – 1740), biskupa na Warmii w latach 1724 – 1740 przy katedrze we Fromborku powstała kaplica pw. Najświętszego Salwatora i św. Teodora Męczennika (Teodora z Amazji), zwana szembekowską. Oratorium stanowi przykład centralnej budowli kopułowej. Powstała jako kaplica relikwiarzowa oraz miejsce pochówku swojego fundatora. Punkt centralny kaplicy stanowi retabulum relikwiarzowe, ustawione w 1734 roku w arkadzie południowej. Na mensie ołtarza ustawiono sarkofag z wizjerami oraz srebrnymi aplikacjami z relikwiami św. Teodora z Amazji. Towarzyszą mu liczne relikwie różnych świętych oraz woskowe agnuski umieszczone w czarnych, drewnianych, przeszklonych relikwiarzach, bogato zdobionych srebrnymi, trybowanymi aplikacjami. Ich srebrne okucia i zdobienia wykonali w latach ok. 1730 – 1743 złotnik olsztyński Jan Krzysztof Geese (†1761) oraz czynny w Królewcu w latach 1712 – 1750 Samuel Grewe. Całość wnętrza kaplicy pokrywają freski wykonane ok. 1735 roku przez Macieja Jana Meyera (Matthiasa Johanna Meyera) z Lidzbarka Warmińskiego. Artysta pilastry, fryzy i płyciny ścian kaplicy ozdobił dekoracjami w formie marmoryzacji i regencyjnej ornamentyki. Pomiędzy czterema parami pilastrów artykułujących wnętrze oratorium przedstawiono w każdym pasie spiętrzone pionowo po cztery medaliony z popiersiami świętych. Dodatkowo w arkadzie nad wejściem do oratorium Meyer ukazał monumentalną Wizję św. Teodora z Amazji. Natomiast w przyłuczach arkad przedstawił personifikacje ośmiu błogosławieństw malowane w technice en grisaille. Z kolei w czaszy kopuły kaplicy wyobrażono adorację Trójcy Świętej oraz Krzyża Świętego przez mieszkańców Nieba, którym przewodzi wniebowzięta Najświętsza Maria Panna. Dekoracja malarska kaplicy Szembekowskiej, zawierająca bogate treści ideowe, stanowi wczesny przykład na ziemiach polski iluzjonistycznego malarstwa kwadraturowego obficie czerpiącego z włoskiej tradycji malarskiej zasilonej inspiracjami Andrea Pozzo (1642 – 1709). Wykształcony w Italii Meyer w komponowaniu dekoracji kopuły oparł się na freskach z lat 1664 – 1665 Pietro Berrettini da Cortona w kopule Santa Maria in Valicella w Rzymie. Natomiast układ malowanych medalionów z popiersiami w dolnej części kaplicy zaczerpnął z podobnego rozwiązania, jakie zastosowano w osiach bocznych ołtarza głównego z lat 1699 – 1700 w kościele Krzyża Świętego w Warszawie, ufundowanego przez mecenasa Meyera biskupa Teodora Potockiego, bezpośredniego poprzednika biskupa Szembeka na stolicy warmińskiej.
    A chapel under the invocation of the Most Holy Saviour and St. Theodore the Martyr (Theodor of Amasea), known as Szembek Chapel was founded by the Bishop of Warmia, Krzysztof Andrzej Jan Szembek of Słupów (1680 – 1740), a bishop of Warmia in 1724 – 1740. The oratory is an example of a central dome structure. It was established as a reliquary chapel and a burial place for its founder. The central point of the chapel is the reliquary reredos,placed in the southern arcade in 1734. On the altar mensa there is a sarcophagus with visors and silver applications with the relics of St. Theodore of Amasea. It is accompanied by numerous relics of various saints and Agnus Dei of wax placed in black, wooden, glass reliquaries, richly decorated with trimmed silver applications. Their silver fittings and decorations were made in the years 1730 – 1743 by a goldsmith from Olsztyn – Jan Krzysztof Geese (†1761) and Samuel Grewe (1712 – 1750), a goldsmith from Królewiec. The entire interior of the chapel is covered with frescoes made around 1735 by Maciej Jan Meyer (Matthias Johann Meyer) from Lidzbark Warmiński. The artist decorated the pilasters, friezes and panelsof the chapel’s walls with forms of marbling and regency ornamentation. In the corners of the chapel there are four pairs of pilasters. For every pair, between the pilasters, there are medallions with busts of saints. Additionally, in the arcade above the entrance to the oratory, Meyer portrayed a monumental Vision of St. Theodore of Amasea. In the arches of the arcades, hepresented personifications of eight blessings, painted in the en grisaille technique. Finally, in the the dome of the chapel one can admire adoration of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Cross by the inhabitants of Heaven, led by the Assumed Virgin Mary. The painting decoration of Szembek Chapel, rich in ideological content, is an early example of Polish quadrature illusionist painting that draws abundantly from the Italian painting tradition inspired by Andrea Pozzo (1642 – 1709). Educated in Italy, Meyer, while composing the dome decorations, drew inspiration from frescoes from the years 1664 – 1665 by Pietro Berrettini da Cortona in the dome of Santa Maria in Valicella in Rome. In case of the arragmenet of the painted medallions with busts that can be found in the lower part of the chapel, Meyer was influenced bya solution used in the side axes of the main altar from the years 1699 – 1700 in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw funded by Meyer’s patron, Bishop Teodor Potocki, a direct predecessor of Bishop Szembek of Warmia.

    In this article, the author attempts to establish the circumstances and meanings of the texts of the 1240s and 1250s, concerning the division of the Prussian lands, which the Bishop of Prussia along with the Teutonic Order had signed with the papal legate William of Modena. This agreement sub-divided the Prussian lands with a ratio of 2:1 in favour of the Order and according to the author’s findings came to fruition in 1232, during the forgotten Prussian mission of Wilhelm of Modena in autumn of this year. It was accompanied by a second agreement, in which, in exchange for the Bishop’s acceptance of the unfavourable division of Prussia, it was agreed to increase his property rights in the Kulmerland. This arrangement was the first agreement between Christian and the Teutonic Order to divide all the Prussian lands, for granting Christian of Rubenicht from the start of 1231, under which the Bishop gave the Teutonic Order a third of their Prussian lands, encompassed only the lands acquired by the Bishop, to come into his possession by voluntary means from the converts of Prussia and not on Prussian lands which were to become the targets of conquest. The partitioning of autumn 1232 proved to have far-reaching consequences in the history of the Teutonic Order State in Prussia, for it became a model for regulating the division of the Prussian territories between the bishops and the Order made by William of Modena in the Act of 28th July 1243.

    W latach 20. XX wieku w Warszawie rozpoczęła działalność Katolicka Agencja Prasowa (KAP). Należała do agencji ogólnoinformacyjnych, miała korespondentów w Polsce i na świecie, pełniła funkcje informacyjne wobec prasy polskiej i zagranicznej. Z wiadomych względów nie było możliwe jej wskrzeszenie w czasach rządów komunistycznych. Działalność KAP nie doczekała się monograficznych publikacji naukowych, a jej historia i znaczenie dla polskiej kultury pozostaje tematem słabo poznanym. Autor artykułu na podstawie materiałów archiwalnych oraz opublikowanych przez agencję depesz opisuje powstanie agencji i jej działalność w dwóch pierwszych latach istnienia, kiedy jej kierownikiem był ks. Józef Gawlina. Analiza źródeł pozwala stwierdzić, że pierwsza polska agencja prasowa o profilu katolickim zawdzięcza swoją ofertę informacyjną ks. Gawlinie, jego pracowitości i talentowi. Dzięki niemu KAP skutecznie weszła na rynek prasowy i konkurowała z agencją państwową. Wydaje się uzasadnione twierdzenie, że już w pierwszych latach istnienia stała się nowoczesnym forum informacji o Kościele, budzącym nieraz kontrowersje, ale zasługującym na uznanie. Jak wynika z materiału badawczego, KAP stanowiła cenne źródło informacji o Kościele. Wpłynęły na to takie przesłanki, jak: struktura pracy oparta na zagranicznych wzorcach, współpraca z zagranicznymi korespondentami i agencjami, tworzenie sieci korespondentów w lokalnych środowiskach kościelnych i szkolenie ich do pracy zgodnej ze standardami pracy dziennikarskiej, zapewnienie w serwisie komentarzy (backgroundu) pisanych przez znawców problematyki kościelnej. KAP pozwalała polskiemu odbiorcy zapoznać się z informacjami z życia Kościoła za granicą, a dzięki publikowanym przez agencję depeszom w krajowej i zagranicznej prasie pojawiły się liczne informacje o polskim życiu religijnym. Nie bez znaczenia pozostaje też wpływ KAP na obraz Polski na arenie międzynarodowej i w Stolicy Apostolskiej.
    During the 1920s the first Polish Catholic Press Agency (KAP) was established in Warsaw. The agency was founded in 1927 by Bishop’s Conference of Poland. It had an extended correspondent network in various Polish dioceses and in the world. Obviously, it was impossible for the agency to continue its activity during the time of communist government. There are no monographic academic publications about KAP, thus its history and significance for the Polish culture is hardly known. On the basis of archival material and published dispatches the author of this article describes the creation and activity of KAP during the first two years of its existence under rev. J. Gawlina’s direction. The analysis of sources allows to say that the first Polish Catholic Press Agency owes a lot to rev. J. Gawlina, his diligence and talent. He put KAP on the press market and made it compete with the government agency. It is widely believed that from the beginning the KAP became a modern informative forum about the Church, nonetheless sometimes giving rise to controversy, yet, at the same time, winning recognition. According to the scientific research, KAP was a significant source of information about the Church. Foreign patterns of work, background reports written by professionals, cooperation with international correspondents and agencies, employing correspondents from the local area and offering them professional training, made the activity of the agency very valuable. KAP allowed Polish users to get news from abroad. Thanks to dispatches in both Polish and foreign press, religious life in Poland was mentioned. KAP also had a significant influence on how Poland was perceived both internationally and by the Holy See.

    Biskup Beniamin Szymański zdecydowanie rozgraniczał duchowość zakonną i du-chowość księdza diecezjalnego. Uważał, że zakonnik kapucyński miał nieustannie dążyć do doskonałości, zatem do osobistej świętości, przez realizację rad ewangelicznych. Natomiast księża diecezjalni winni ustawicznie pogłębiać świadomość wielkiej godności sakramentu święceń. Oni bowiem uświęcają się przez sprawowanie obowiązków wynikających z przyję-tego sakramentu. Wzrastają zaś w życiu wewnętrznym pogłębiając swoją formację intelektu-alną i duchową. Wyrazem tego jest ich gorliwość w głoszeniu słowa Bożego, udzielania sa-kramentów świętych, także troską o estetyczny wygląd świątyni. Biskup Szymański propo-nował księżom i swoim wiernym świeckim jako pomoc w duchowym wzrastaniu nabożeń-stwa maryjne, zwłaszcza majowe. Kult Matki Bożej prowadzi do Boga bogatego w miłosier-dzie.
    Bishop Beniamin Szymański definitely differentiated monastic piety and piety of a diocesan priest. He thought that Capuchins were supposed to continuously aim to perfection, to perso-nal holiness through realization of evangelical advice. Priests were supposed to continuously deepen the awareness of great dignity of The Sacrament of Holy Orders. They sanctify them-selves through performing duties resulting from the received Sacrament. They grow inwardly deepening their intellectual and spiritual formation. To express this they eagerly proclaim the Word of God, administer sacraments, they take care of an aesthetic image of the church. Bishop Szymański proposed to his priests and worshippers Marian devotions, especially May Devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary as help in their spiritual growing. The cult of the Virgin Mary leads to God who is rich in mercy.

Kaplica ze świadomie wybranym kształtem, właściwie dobranymi relikwiami, odpowiednią dekoracją malarską pokrywającą wnętrze, kopią narodowego palladium, jakim jest cudowny wizerunek Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej oraz bogatym uposażeniem na potrzeby celebrowanej w niej liturgii, od samego początku była w zamyśle biskupa Szembeka pomyślana jako miejsce mające chronić Świętą Warmię przed zagrażającymi jej niebezpieczeństwami ze strony innowierców.
    From the foundation of the bishop of Warmia, Krzysztof Andrzej Jan Szembek from Słupów (1680–1740), the bishop of Warmia in the years 1724–1740, a chapel was built at the cathedral in Frombork. It was named for Holy Savior and St. Theodore the Martyr (Theodor of Amazja), but often called Szembekowska. The oratory is an example of a central dome structure. It was built as both a reliquary chapel and burial place of its founder. The central point of the chapel is the reliquary retable, set in 1734 in the southern arcade. On the mensa, was placed a sarcophagus with visors and silver applications with the relics of the early Christian martyr St. Theodore of Amasia. It is accompanied by numerous relics of various saints and wax agnus placed in black, wooden, glazed reliquaries, richly decorated with silver, trimmed applications. Their silver fittings and decorations were made in the years around 1730–1743 by the Olsztyn goldsmith Jan Krzysztof Geese (†1761) and Samuel Grewe, active in Königsberg in the years 1712–1750. The entire interior of the chapel is covered with frescoes made around 1735 by Maciej Jan Meyer (Matthias Johann Meyer) from Lidzbark Warmiński. The chapel with a consciously chosen shape, properly selected relics, an appropriate painting decoration covering the interior, a copy of the national palladium, which is the miraculous image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, and a rich endowment for the needs of the liturgy celebrated there, was from the very beginning, in Bishop Szembek’s intention, built as a place to protect Holy Warmia from the dangers threatening it from dissenters.
