Opis:
Studies carried out over the past two decades, gives a promising perspective biohydrogen production. However in terms of economy pro-cess its efficiency must be significantly increased. A current research goal should be to find new methods of recovery of hydrogen from organic substrates at the highest level. Biohydrogen production by fermentation is the most frequently indicated as the most effective method.

Opis:
Municipal wastewater is characterized by diverse microbial content, largely dependent on their sources as well as many other factors like condition and health of their producer, but also environmental factors. The number and share of individual bacterial population in wastewater is changing during the process of their treatment in wastewater treatment plants. The microbial content of treated wastewater is significantly affected by the type of technology used for wastewater treatment. The paper presents the results of the species composition of bacteria present in the wastewater at various stages of treatment for the two different technologies. Samples of wastewater from hydroponic wastewater treatment plant and from the plant whose technology is based on biofilters were analysed. A key mechanism for wastewater treatment in both cases is biological treatment, using microbial activity that decomposes pollutants in the wastewater, which significantly contributes to changes in the species composition of bacteria comparing to microbiological composition of sewage flowing into the treatment plant. Analyses of microbial composition showed that in the objects consisting of preliminary tank and biofilter, composition of bacteria species is changing, but many species isolated from raw sewage is also found in treated wastewater. In the plant with hydroponic lagoon after wastewater treatment throughout the process system, bacteria present in raw sewage or in wastewater after biological treatment were not identified in the outlet.

A review of literature data has been presented, concerning selected problems of the utilization of wastewater from woodworking industry with the participation of microorganisms. Special attention has been focused on the biodegradation of components contained in water extracts from natural wood, leachates from wood waste and industrial wastewater generated in manufacturing wood products. Significance of white-rot fungi in enzymatic decomposition of lignin complexes has been emphasized. Many of chemical compounds which have toxic effect on water organisms are present in wastewater from wood industry. Although a lot of these compounds are potentially biodegradable, the decomposition process, especially of adhesives, may be inhibited by their high and harmful concentrations.

Opis:
Rapid growth of the amount of available biological data made it clear that an analysis of complex biological processes can be made only with the support of mathematics and computer sciences. It is especially important nowadays when the systems biology approach is becoming more and more widely used in biological science. This new way of investigation of biological phenomena allows, at least in principle, to observe complex relationships between different parts of the analyzed system. These interactions may be crucial for the system's nature and behavior, so observing them may lead to important biological discoveries. Probably the most important part of this process consists in building of a formal model of the biological process. One of the promising methods of such an analysis is based on the theory of Petri nets. Models expressed in the language of this theory are very precise on the one hand, and on the other, they are intuitive, which makes their analysis easier in comparison, for example, to models based on ordinary differential equations. In this paper, a brief introduction to the theory of Petri nets is given and its applications for modeling of some exemplary biological processes are shortly discussed. Moreover, some extensions of the classical Petri nets and their biological applications are also presented.

Opis:
Lipids may form two main types of structures: bilayer, and inverted structures. The inverted structures can form either cylindrical inverted hexagonal structures or spherical and have inverted micelles known also as cubic phase. The type of structure formed depends on the chemical texture of lipids, degree of hydratation of their polar groups’, and several other external factors, such as pH, temperature, and presence of some chemicals or salt ions. The inverted structures play an important role in several biological processes. They can promote membrane fusion. This was applied to design of lipid based delivery systems for a lot of chemicals which have to be placed inside the cells. These structures are also used in the so-called micellar enzymology and as a new approach in homogeneous enzyme immunoassay utilizing the systems of surfactant reversed micelles in organic solvents for determination of the catalytic activity of the enzymes solubilized in such systems. Cell-free translation was also observed in reversed micelles. Some enzymes as violaxanthin de-epoxidase, protein kinase C and ATP-ase require for their activity lipids creating inverted structures. These lipids are also necessary in the transport of some proteins through membranes.

Opis:
Green walls or living walls are architectural installations comprised of plants growing in soil filled, modular panels that are attached to interior or exterior walls. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using green walls to pretreat wastewater generated by small to medium sized food and beverage manufacturers. A 1.2 m high green wall was constructed using two, 610 mm×610 mm panels filled with recycled glass media and planted with Epipremnum aureum. Brewery wastewater was recirculated through the system under four experimental scenarios: media, only; media with bio-film; media with plants; and media with plants and biofilm. Reduction of BOD was at least 65% after 24 hours in all four scenarios. Removal of turbidity, BOD, and total nitrogen was similar in scenarios involving biofilm with or without plants. Green walls appear to offer a space and cost efficient method for pretreating wastewater generated by beverage and food industries.

The binary and ternary complex formations of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) (PMVEMA) with copper ions and with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of copper ions in phosphate buffer solution at pH = 7 were examined by the techniques of UV-visible, fluorescence, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy measurements. In the formation of binary complexes of PMVEMA-Cu(II), the addition of copper ions to the solution of PMVEMA in phosphate buffer solution at pH = 7 forms homogeneous solutions when the molar ratio of Cu(II)/MVEMA is 0.5. Then the formations of ternary complexes of PMVEMA-Cu(II)-BSA were examined. Study analysis revealed that the toxicities of polymer-metal and polymer-metal-protein mixture solutions depend on the nature and ratio of components in mixtures.

Results concerning processing of treatment tanning sewage by using the activated sludge method with use biocomponent as functionalizing agent for it in sewage treatment plant were presented. An addition of biocomponent to activated sludge bioreactor at amount of 0,1 mg/dm3 considerably reduces such parameters as: total nitrogen number, COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD5 (biological oxygen demand). A bigger doses of biocomponent were not considerably influence on the treatment tanning sewage effectiveness.. For the sake of various compositions of tanning sewage as a consequence of using various technology for processing dressing leathers, the selection dose of biocomponent on 1 m3 tanning sewage ought to evaluate individually for each sewage treatment.

Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising energy sources. Currently, it is mainly produced from conventional energy sources with technologies that are energy consuming and produce large amounts of CO₂. Therefore, hydrogen production with biological methods is becoming an attractive research direction. Biological hydrogen production processes occur in microalgae and cyanobacteria. Biological hydrogen production can proceed in two ways: with participation of light energy (water biophotolysis and photofermentation) or without light (dark hydrogen fermentation, bioelectrolysis, bioconversion of carbon monoxide). The article describes the hydrogen production processes occurring with the participation of microalgae and cyanobacteria.

Opis:
The performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HFCW) for rural domestic sewage treatment has been evaluated. The system was built as a tertiary treatment after the biological processes to improve the effluent wastewater quality. The HFCW was operated in three phases under different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs), and with three kinds of aquatic plants i.e., water spinach, Chinese celery and cress. The vegetation growth parameters such as plant height, fresh and dry weights were monitored and analyzed. The influent and effluent concentrations of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were measured. The average removal efficiencies at the first phase were 52.9%, 64.7%, 58.2% and 72.8%, and it reduced to 48.6%, 52.2%, 44.04% and 64.4% in the second phase for COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP, respectively. In the third phase, the HFCW system showed the following mean removal efficiencies: 51.2%, 74.2%, 58.5% and 80.9%. The results revealed that the removal efficiencies increased with decrease in the HLR and increased temperatures. The findings confirmed that the horizontal flow constructed wet-land is more convenient for the rural wastewater treatment with efficient nutrient removal.

Opis:
Recent interest in the effects of streambed and near-subsurface (benthic and hyporheic) processes on stream ecosystems has motivated study of the hydrodynamics of stream-subsurface interactions. Hydrodynamic transport places an important control on the delivery of reactive species such as contaminants and ecologically-relevant substances such as nutrients to the benthic and hyporheic zones. Conversely, biological pro-cesses such as biofilm growth and physicochemical processes such as colloid deposition can alter the transport environment within sedimentary systems. Multiple feedbacks between biological, chemical, and transport processes make these interfacial sedimentary environments very com-plex. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the feedbacks be-tween hydrodynamic stream-subsurface exchange, biofilm development, and fine particle deposition. These studies demonstrate that a compre-hensive interdisciplinary approach is required to assess even the most basic dynamic processes in these systems, such as the evolution of in-terfacial fluxes over time. We suggest that it is useful to consider these processes to be biophysicochemical in nature. That is, in such complex environmental systems, it is misleading to attempt to consider processes in isolation; rather, understanding of system dynamics can only come from an integrated approach that considers feedbacks among and be-tween biological, physical, and chemical processes.
