Opis:
The orchid flora of Puebla State represents 16% of the total species present in Mexico demonstrating rich biodiversity. However, several municipalities in the north-east of Puebla area are located within a conservation priority area for its tropical montane cloud forest and tropical rain forest due to decision of the Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y el Uso de la Biodiversidad of Mexico. We have recorded 93 species from Cuetzalan del Progreso with 25 new records of the flora of the state. These new dditions thereby currently increase the orchid flora of Puebla to 197 species. Of these, six species are classified as threatened, three as subject to special protection by the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and one classified as least concern by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Moreover, we recorded 37 species illegally traded in “tianguis” (informal markets) of Cuetzalan del Progreso. The orchid diversity in the fragmented forests can be harnessed in establishing a model for the sustainable management and to promote conservation action f species at some level of threat and in the restoration of areas with fragmented forests. Unfortunately, the orchid diversity has been seriously endangered by several anthropogenic factors. We have also recorded significant anthropogenic threats in this municipality for the long-term existence of the local orchid members and species with potential for commercial production. A viable approach will be to allow the introduction of in vitro germination program and organic production of orchids by local and fringe communities; this will reduce inhabitants’ dependence on the scarce forest resources, lessen illegal harvesting and trafficking of wild orchids, and at the same time provide economic development for the local communities.

Opis:
The calcareous grasslands belong to the species-rich plant communities in Poland. Most of them are of anthropogenic origin and they need specific management (i.e. periodical cutting suckers of trees and shrubs, grazing or mowing) in order to protect their floristic diversity. Many of calcareous grasslands have been overgrown by shrubs as a result of cessation of traditional management. The aim of this study was to compare the structure and dynamics of xerothermic hazel shrub patches, which were undergoing secondary succession with patches where different management practices aiming at restoration of species-rich limestone grassland were applied. The managed plots had a significantly higher species richness than the control one. However, they strongly differed in their floristic composition from well-preserved limestone grasslands. There were also significant differences observed between both the managed plots. Too intensive management, particularly frequent mowing of herbs resulted in expansion of grass species such as Brachypodium pinnatum and Calamagrostis arundinacea and caused a sharp decline in species richness. The species composition and turnover rate strongly depended on succesional stage (soil layer thickness) of plots at the start of the experiment. The deeper was the soil, the higher was the rate of species turnover and the smaller was the share of xerothermic and thermophilous species. The last mentioned group was dominated by species with a persistent seed bank in the soil, frequently colonizing anthropogenic habitats.

In this research we study butterflies diversity and abundance in North Czech Coal Basin (NCCB) and Landscape protected area Ceske stredohori (LP A). Butterflies are very sensitive species for changes in aricultural management (Denis 2004). They can be used as bioindicators and umbrella species. We study 4 localities - each of them includes 3 study plots. Two localities are situated in LPA and two are situated at dumps of (NCCB). We compare three different succesion stages (low xerotherm grassland, mezophilus grassland, areas with trees and bushes) on two different types of landscape (seminatural biotops x reclamations). In 2009 there were done four observations on each locality and two visits were done in 2010. Higher number of species was found in LPA and also more of rare and endangered species were observed there compare to dumps. Altough dumps seem to be good potential habitats for butterflies. Important for all localities is, if there is an active antropogenic management or not.
Porównujemy trzy różne etapy sukcesji (niskie murawy kserotermiczne, murawy mezofilne, obszary z drzewami i krzewami) w ramach dwóch, odmiennych typów krajobrazu (seminaturalne biotopy x rekultywacja). W 2009 roku dokonano czterech obserwacji w każdej lokalizacji, a w 2010 roku przeprowadzone zostały dwie wizyty.

Rare and endemic plant species represent important components of plant biodiversity which require protection to ensure their sustainable conservation. Cerastium banaticum (Rochel) Heuff. is such an endemic and rare species from Romania, for which the genetic variability of two natural populations was studied by SSR markers. Shannon’s information index revealed low levels of genetic diversity in both populations (I = 0.296). As the first attempt in a conservation program a reproducible micropropagation protocol was established starting from seeds, followed by multiplication, rooting, and ex vitro acclimatization. Among the various plant growth regulators tested the highest multiplication coefficient was achieved on a culture medium with 0.5 mg L -1 6-furfurylaminopurine (K) and 1 mg L -1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). On this PGRs concentration a number of 26.6 shoots/individual explant with a mean length of 7.9 cm for new generated shoots was registered. The highest number of roots/indi- vidual initiated shoot was 2.6 and it was recorded on a culture medium with 0.5 mg L -1 2-isopentyl-adenine (2iP) and 0.1 mg L -1 NAA. The outdoor acclimatization was successfully performed in a specially designed rocky area in the ‘Alexandru Borza’ Botanical Garden, Cluj-Napoca (Romania).

The paper is a preliminary report of a long-term project that aims at completing the flora of bryophytes and lichens in the projected Canyon Colca and the Valley of the Volcanoes National Park area (Arequipa, Peru). The bryophytes and lichens of this deepest canyon in the world has remained underexplored for a long time. These organisms dominate in the vegetation cover and exhibit a remarkable species diversity resulting from habitat richness in this area. The important result of preliminary studies was discovered the first records of lichens Lecanora leuckertiana in South America and Lepraria impossibilis in the Southern Hemisphere. Further researeh should result in completing floristic lists of bryophytes and lichens of the Canyon Colca and the Valley of the Volcanoes National Park and should provide arguments for the protection of its unique wild life.

Public discussions as well official conferences with participation of representatives of the Polish Parliament and Senate, ministries, industry, farmers, local governments, pro-ecological NGOs and scientists revealed a deep and emotional division in opinions on approving growing GM crops in Poland. Both supporters as well critics expressed needs for objective evaluation of collected scientific data on the effect of GM crops on non-target organisms, preferably from research projects carried out in our region. During recent international meetings (e.g. IOBC, EFSA) the methodology, data collection and interpretation of result of the three year DEFRA - funded study on the environmental impact of GM herbicide - tolerant GMHT) crops, published by the Royal Society in October 2003, were cited as the model. In this review, selected data are presented to show that the type of a crop and field management has much greater influence than growing GMHT or conventional cultivars of maize, beet and spring rape on various groups of wildlife The British media and NGOs responses are cited as a strong impact on the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - DEFRA, decision to give higher priorities to sustainability of arable weeds than to farmer's gains. Further experiments carried our by scientists on the Broom's Barn experimental station demonstrated that managing period of herbicide treatment and a row or overall application may lead to wildlife conservation, especially various species of birds. The Author wish to thank dr Alan Dewar for sharing relevant documents and his original research data on GMHT crops.

Opis:
In 2012 and 2013, 418 species of moths at total were recorded in the Botanical Garden of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The list comprises 116 speciesof Noctuidae (26.4% of the Polish fauna), 116 species of Geometridae (28.4% of the Polish fauna) and 63 species of other Macrolepidoptera representatives (27.9% of the Polish fauna). The remaining 123 species were represented by Microlepidoptera. Nearly 10% of the species were associated with wetland habitats, what constitutes a surprisingly large proportion in such an urbanised area. Comparing the obtained data with previous studies concerning Polish urban fauna of Lepidoptera, the moths assemblages in the Botanical Garden were the most similar to the one from the Natolin Forest Reserve which protects the legacy of Mazovian forests. Several recorded moths appertain to locally and rarely encountered species, as Stegania cararia, Melanthia procellata, Pasiphila chloerata, Eupithecia haworthiata, Horisme corticata, Xylomoia graminea, Polychrysia moneta. In the light of the conducted studies, the Botanical Garden in Lublin stands out as quite high biodiversity and can be regarded as a refuge for moths within the urban limits of Lublin.
Na podstawie badań przeprowadzonych w latach 2012–2013 na terenie Ogrodu Botanicznego Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie stwierdzono występowanie 418 gatunków motyli nocnych. Lista gatunków zawiera: 116 gatunków należących do Noctuidae (26,4% polskiej fauny), 116 gatunków należących do Geometridae (28,4% polskiej fauny) oraz 63 gatunki należące do pozostałych przedstawicieli Macrolepidoptera (27,9% polskiej fauny). Spośród stwierdzonych motyli wiele należało do gatunków rzadko i lokalnie spotykanych, m.in.: Stegania cararia, Melanthia procellata, Pasiphila chloerata, Eupithecia haworthiata, Horisme corticata, Xylomoia graminea, Polychrysia moneta.

Opis:
One of the effects of human expansion on the Earth is enormous growth of the species extinction rate. And this process leads to significant reduction of biodiversity. Meanwhile, its protection is necessary for the most elemental reasons, it means: maintenance of the action mechanisms of the living nature; maintenance of the ability of the nature to survive changes to the environment; prevention of the loss of natural values, hitherto undiscovered and unused, which constitute the basis for development and the guarantee to survive future generations. The concept of biological diversity was defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted at the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (so called “Earth Summit”) in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992. The European Union is the Signatory of that Convention. Therefore, the obligations imposed on the signatories of the Convention shall be also reflected in the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union. However, up till the year 2014 the necessity of biological biodiversity conservation did not constitute the determinant of the Common Agricultural Policy. After, at least the last development stage of CAP introduces the set of measures which benefits the protection of diversity. However, it is important that the CAP legal regulations shall be reflected in the national legal regulations of the Members of the European Union, as well as that their implementation shall be accompanied by recognition of the natural capital value by the European Union community.
Proces ten prowadzi do znaczącego ograniczenia bioróżnorodności. Pojęcie różnorodności biologicznej zostało zdefiniowane w Konwencji o różnorodności biologicznej przyjętej podczas Konferencji Narodów Zjednoczonych na temat środowiska i rozwoju (tzw. Szczytu Ziemi) w Rio de Janeiro 5 czerwca 1992 r. Sygnatariuszem tej Konwencji jest Unia Europejska. Zobowiązania nałożone na sygnatariuszy Konwencji winny znaleźć odzwierciedlenie we Wspólnej Polityce Rolnej (WPR) UE. Konieczność ochrony różnorodności biologicznej nie stanowiła jednak determinantu WPR aż do 2014 r. Dopiero jej ostatnia faza rozwojowa wprowadziła zestaw środków służących ochronie bioróżnorodności. Ważne jest, by regulacje prawne WPR znalazły odzwierciedlenie w przepisach prawa krajowego członków UE oraz by ich wdrażaniu towarzyszyło uznanie wartości kapitału naturalnego przez społeczność UE.

The Chandipore beach, situated in Balasore district, Odisha, 21°28΄N 87°01΄E / 21.47°N and 87.02°E shows an interesting nature of wave action as the water recedes up to an average of 5 kilometres during the ebb and tide, resulting in a vast, dynamic array of coastal biodiversity. It gets exposed to a huge tourism load every year and is faced with multidimensional anthropogenic interactions manifested through a varying gradient of urbanizing parameters like cattle grazing, automobile exhaust, constructions in vicinity of beach area, sewage and solid disposals etc. Present piece of work aims at documenting the premonsoon abundance and diversity of marine invertebrate fauna in this eastern Indian sea beach. Adamsia palliata, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, Diogenes rectimanus, Sabella sp., Astropecten mauritianas were found to be few of the prominent faunal representatives. Significant differences in respect of species richness have been observed among different selected ecozones through the coastal landscape based on tidal activity and anthropogenic exposure (F5.73, p ≤ 0.05). Such type of field-based observations leads to the scope of further estimation of the ecological status of these native organisms, their intra and inter-specific associations and functional contributions to coastal landscape playing role as a potential bioindicator, which may in turn become instrumental in frame working the future conservation scheme of these natural assets.

Laricifomes officinalis is a wood-decay fungus that is closely associated with old individuals of Larix decidua. In the twentieth century, L. officinalis was over-harvested because of its medicinal properties; consequently, it has become very rare or almost extinct in the Alps. In this study, we investigated the population of L. officinalis in the Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park (Val d’Ossola, Italy) to assess a preliminary conservation strategy. Population consistency was estimated using field mapping, and spatial analysis was performed on host trees based on topographical and environmental variables. Mycelia were isolated from harvested basidiomata, and strain identity confirmed by molecular analysis of the ITS region. All isolated strains were tested for growth in Petri dishes containing different standard media to determine which strains had the highest growth rates; the fastest growing strains may be selected for future studies and applications. Compared to the control strains from Val Malenco and Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, all strains from Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park had lower growth rates. There was no significant difference between the growth rates of strains from Alpe Veglia and those from Alpe Devero. The results suggest that the population consistency of L. officinalis in the Alpe Veglia–Alpe Devero Natural Park is related to two main factors: habitat preservation and harvesting prohibition. These results confirm the need to protect L. officinalis both inside and outside natural reserves, despite the apparent increase in local populations.

Though current conservation policy in Poland refl ects world trends and approaches to action, compliance with all of its assumptions would entail the Polish authorities remodelling both the system and the methods by which natural resources are managed. On the one hand this requires a change of approach to the management of natural resources from the traditional, purely nature-related one, to a more modern inter-disciplinary one that takes in social and economic conditioning. On the other hand, a system need to be put in place to allow these ideas to be introduced in practice. The work described here deals with the participation of different stakeholder groups in nature management, with this regarded as a method of increasing the latter’s effi ciency. The many examples (of good practice) presented by the author well illustrate the wisdom of the approach, which often seems to achieve success where it is attempted. In response to the information published in “Forest Research Papers” (vol. 77(4), 2016), regarding the problem of the European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (L.) in the Białowieża Forest, we present our viewpoint on this issue. The role of the European spruce bark beetle in the Białowieża Forest is discussed based on experience gained in Europe’s forests. We present the effects of I. typographus outbreaks on forest biodiversity as well as outbreak mitigation in the context of the processes taking place in semi natural forests.

Opis:
The paper presents the issue of conservation of species diversity of the Białowieża Forest in the context of both natural and human−related disturbances. These disturbances, in the authors’ opinion, were the main factor that shaped the unique species diversity of this area. Examples of natural disturbances occurring in the Białowieża Forest include the impact of wind, insect outbreaks and, to a lesser extent, fires. On the other hand anthropogenic disturbances are related to various forms of forest use, which historically took place here, i.e. grazing by domestic animals, beekeeping, charcoal production, and recently also forest management. Currently, in the situation of rarity and unpredictability of natural disturbances, as well as due to a significant decrease in human impact on forests of the Białowieża Forest, there is a risk of decrease of biodiversity, which is related to the process of natural succession, homogenization of the forest and the decline of favourable habitats for the development of some organisms. This particularly applies to the so−called ‘open forest’ species that are dependent on sunny places in forests. Historically these species found favourable conditions in the Białowieża Forest in many sites, where traditional forms of forest use took place, but also in areas used for traditional forest management. At present, it is necessary to adapt forest management on the one hand and nature conservation on the other, in order to meet the requirements of diverse groups of organisms, both requiring passive as well as active methods of conservation. The authors postulate the necessity of introducing a diverse conservation strategy in the Białowieża Forest.

Opis:
Nature reserves are one of the most important measures in saving biodiversity, however, during the climate change, a real danger arises, that these territories would not be able to fulfill the objectives. In order to mitigate negative effects of climate change in protected areas it is necessary to create and apply management programs, based on future ecosystems needs. The main aim of presented study was to evaluate sensitivity of rare and vulnerable species to climate change in order to suggest measures for better management of nature reserves in the future. According to scientific literature, 12 biological and ecological plant characteristics determining sensitivity of species (limiting factors) have been detected. 73 plant species that are protected in Lithuanian reserves were evaluated qualitatively according to limiting factors of climate change. As the result, it was offered to apply additional protection measures to 47 species in the light of climate change. Groups of plant species that should be affected highly negatively or highly positively were identified. 16% of plant species protected in nature reserves were evaluated as very sensitive to climate change and the condition of these plants may worsen. On the other hand, 14 plant species were given as least sensitive to negative effects and future climate is more favorable to species growth and spread than the existing. The highest danger is predicted for Silene chlorantha (Willd.) Ehrh., and the best condition is predicted for Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds. Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó. The study also gives recommendations for the protection of rare plants in the future. Different management measures are taken into account: mitigation of the direct effect of climate change (I), improvement of an existing level of rareness (II), respecting the relation to physical and biological environment (III), consideration of spread and geographical limits (IV). Three management intensity levels were suggested according to species sensitivity.
