Opis:
Maritime shipping is a set of complex activities with a large number of actors involved. We focus on a subset of illegal maritime activities, such as armed robberies, maritime piracy or contraband smuggling. To fight against them and minimize their negative impact naval authorities typically introduce a number of countermeasures, such as deployed patrols or surveillance agents. Due to very high costs of countermeasures it is often beneficial to evaluate their impact using a simulation, allowing what-if analysis and evaluation of a range of scenarios before actually deploying the countermeasures. We introduce BANDIT, an agent-based computational platform, which is designed to evaluate scenarios with an accent on the modeling of different types of illegal behavior and on the interaction between agents. The platform consists of an agent behavior modeling system and a multi-agent maritime simulator. The platform allows the definition of a number of scenarios through a simple configuration and it offers the means to run these scenarios in a single or a batch mode and evaluate the results as single or aggregate data sets respectively. We demonstrate the usefulness of the platform on the scenarios of the drug smuggling problem in the seas surrounding Central America. Senario outcomes (e.g., heatmaps of activities, set of trajectories etc.) are subsequently used to help with the design of effective countermeasures, i.e., allocating naval patrols and planning their patrol routes.

W pracy pokazano przykłady zastosowania wyżej wymienionego modelu w sytuacji konkurencji na duopolistyczym rynku.
The possibility of using agent models to model the consumers behavior is presented in this paper. Two dimensional cellular automaton has been used. As a key mechanism of consumer preferences changes, the communication of information 'word of mouth' (w-o-m) was adopted because it is a crucial tool in this area. The article shows examples of the above-mentioned model in the competitive situation in the duopoly market.

The aim of the research was to search for a family etiology of aggressive strategies for coping with a social conflict situation by adolescents, which are inherent in the aggressive model of their parents’ responses to a social conflict situation. D. Borecka-Biernat’s Questionnaire on parents’ strategies for coping with a social conflict situation (KSRwSK) and D. Borecka-Biernat’s Questionnaire on studying strategies for coping with a social conflict situation by adolescents (KSMK) were applied in our research. Empirical studies were conducted in junior high schools. They covered 893 adolescents (468 girls and 425 boys) aged 13–15 years. The analysis of the research material showed that mother and father are perceived as those who use an aggressive strategy in situations which hinder the achievement of goals and contribute to the modeling of a strategy of aggressive behavior in girls and boys, which is used by them in a social conflict situation.

A cellular automaton model is presented in order to describe mutual interactions among the individuals of a population due to social decisions. The scheme is used for getting qualitative results, comparable to field experiments carried out on a population of ants which present an aggregative behavior. We also present a second description of a biological spatially structured population of N individuals by a system of stochastic differential equations of Ito type. A 'law of large numbers' to a continuum dynamics described by an integro-differential equation is given.

Monitoring of deformations, whether using geodetic or geotechnical instrumentation, besides providing a warning system in case of an abnormal behaviour of the dam, may be used as a tool for a verification of design parameters. By comparing results of monitoring measurements with a deterministic (a-priori) model of deformation, one may determine and explain causes of deformation in a case of unexpected behaviour of the investigated object and its surrounding. Thus, the role of monitoring becomes much broader than just the conventional determination of the status of the deformable object. On the other hand, a predicted behaviour of the dam may be used in designing the monitoring scheme, giving information on the magnitude and location of the expected maximum deformation parameters. In addition, with properly designed monitoring surveys, one may also determine the actual deformation mechanism. The discussed problems are illustrated by three types of earth dams located in California, USA, and in Quebec, Canada.

The technological process of thermal treatment of capillary-porous materials, characterized by the influence of several factors on the material as load, humidity and temperature was considered. Mathematical models of non-isothermal moisture transfer and viscoelastic deformation, taking into account the fractal structure of the environment were constructed. One-dimensional mathematical models of deformation-relaxation processes in environments with fractal structure characterized by the effects of memory, spatial nonlocality and self-organization were considered. Taking into account that the fractional parameters of fractal models allow us to describe the deformation-relaxation processes in comparison with traditional methods more fully, the optimal approximation method, the Proni’s method was proposed. This method allows us to reduce the problem of identification of the fractional parameters which are part of the creep and relaxation kernels structure, to finding the solutions of systems of linear equations. Software to implement the obtained models was developed.

The analysis of an important drawback of the well known Hardening Soil model (HSM) is the main purpose of this paper. A special emphasis is put on modifying the HSM to enable an appropriate prediction of the undrained shear strength using a nonzero dilatancy angle. In this light, the paper demonstrates an advanced numerical finite element modeling addressed to practical geotechnical problems. The main focus is put on serviceability limit state analysis of a twin-tunnel excavation in London clay. The two-phase formulation for partially saturated medium, after Aubry and Ozanam, is used to describe interaction between soil skeleton and pore water pressure.

The main purpose of the present work was to validate the numerical model for the pulse-step liquid steel alloying method using a physical simulator that enables the observation and recording of phenomena occurring during the continuous steel casting process. The facility under investigation was a single-nozzle tundish equipped with a dam. To physical trials the glass water model was made on a scale of 2:5. For the mathematical description of turbulence during liquid steel alloying process, the k-ε and k-ω models were employed in the simulations. Based on the computer simulations and physical trials carried out, alloy addition behaviour and mixing curves for different tundish alloy addition feeding positions were obtained. The change in the location of alloy addition feeding to the liquid steel had an effect on the process of alloy addition spread in the liquid steel bulk and on the mixing time.

Opis:
In this paper one discusses the problem of modeling of thermal barrier coatings in an unified way. This approach takes into account both mechanics of materials responsible for behavior of the thermal barrier coatings and its production relying on preparation of material for deposition and the deposition itself. Two pillars of the unified description are considered. The first one is the notion of index of structure. The second one is created by criteria of design of properties of the thermal barrier coatings. It is suggested to apply the multiscale method of modeling for the behavior of material in deposited layer called collection of dynamical systems with dimensional reduction. This multiscale approach is viewed as appropriate theoretical environment for expression of design criteria of the layer. We mean by this the criteria related to mechanical resistance against damage and criteria for thermal properties. It is accentuated that the two-scale segment of multicale modeling composed of molecular dynamics and nanoscale modeling is of primary importance for the design tasks. Possibility of consideration of both mentioned methods of modeling follows from properties of the collection of dynamical system approach which allow us to treat molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics models within one theoretical scheme. Premises for design of production of thermal barrier coatings process are placed in the design of layer properties which could be next transformed into design of indexes of structure corresponding to various stages of the deposition.

Opis:
Tasks scheduling and resource allocation are among crucial issues in any large scale distributed system, including Computational Grids (CGs). These issues are commonly investigated using traditional computational models and resolution methods that yield near-optimal scheduling strategies. One drawback of such approaches is that they cannot effectively tackle the complex nature of CGs. On the one hand, such systems account for many administrative domains with their own access policies, user privileges, etc. On the other, CGs have hierarchical nature and therefore any computational model should be able to effectively express the hierarchical architecture in the optimization model. Recently, researchers have been investigating the use of game theory for modeling user requirements regarding task and resource allocation in grid scheduling problems. In this paper we present two general non-cooperative game approaches, namely, the symmetric non-zero sum game and the asymmetric Stackelberg game for modeling grid user behavior defined as user requirements. In our game-theoretic approaches we are able to cast new requirements arising in allocation problems, such as asymmetric users relations, security and reliability restrictions in CGs. For solving the games, we designed and implemented GA-based hybrid schedulers for approximating the equilibrium points for both games. The proposed hybrid resolution methods are experimentally evaluated through the grid simulator under heterogeneity, and large-scale and dynamics conditions. The relative performance of the schedulers is measured in terms of the makespan and flowtime metrics. The experimental analysis showed high efficiency of meta-heuristics in solving the game-based models, especially in the case of an additional cost of secure task scheduling to be paid by the users.

In the paper an initial attempt to the experimental analysis of viscous effects, characteristic for homogeneous solid rocket fuels is proposed. For this reason uniaxial tensile experiments, carried out on dumbbell homogeneous solid propellants have been chosen. Laboratory tests have been carried out on INSTRON tensile testing machine. Research schedule involved destructive tensile tests with various strain rates. Three different values of strain rates have been taken into consideration. Experimentally obtained hardening curves are presented in suitable diagrams. Basing on obtained results, authors confrm the viscoplastic behavior of studied materials. Essential impact of the applied strain rate on the position of experimental hardening curves is observed. Acquired results are the base for the further stage of investigations of homogeneous solid propellants – the modeling of their physical properties. Additionally, numerical modeling of studied phenomena, using the viscoplastic Chaboche’s model, identifed on the basis of experimental data, is presented. The material parameters of the constitutive law are determined numerically using an evolutionary algorithm procedure. The effciency of the model and the identifcation approach are discussed.

Aim/purpose – The study was based on social exchange theory and addressed the effects of firm-based organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) on normative and continuance organizational commitment (OC). Multigroup behavioral differences among pharmaceutical executives were also evaluated. Design/methodology/approach – This study employed an empirical, explanatory cross-sectional study with online questionnaires administered to four hundred and one randomly selected pharmaceutical executives in Nigeria. The covariance-based structural equation modeling technique was used for testing hypotheses. Firm-based OCB domains –conscientiousness, sportsmanship, and civic virtue were regressed on OC domains of continuance, and normative. The hypothesized effects of firm-based OCB on the domains of OC were examined using Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS). Findings – The structural model had acceptable fit measures. Conscientiousness and sportsmanship behaviors were negatively related to normative OC while civic virtue had a positive significant relationship with normative OC. Multigroup comparisons based on gender, profession, and type of organization revealed significant effects on the relations between civic virtue and normative OC. Employees highly vested with enhancing and representing their company’s image, tend to be more obligated to continue and remain with the organization. The more self-directed, and less-complaining employees are, the lower the tendency to remain with the organization. The nuances of group differences among employees had an impact on examined relationships. Research implications/limitations – Human resource managers should adequately stimulate and motivate employees to be ambassadors of the organization. This is achievable by instilling a sense of ownership and loyalty in employees. Further implications are discussed. Originality/value/contribution – The study disentangled the relations between OCB and OC in the context of pharmaceutical executives in a developing country. The study highlighted the essence of group-specific differences in behavioral evaluation among pharmaceutical executives.
