    Undoubtedly, Liber Pontificalis is a biased and propaganda source, showing not really what happened but what the Lateran officials wanted to be recorded for future generations as the credits of one or another pope. Despite this, it is worth paying attention to the details described therein because they show us the hierarchy of the priority of given buildings and their significance from the perspective of the pope’s court. There, we find the data about baptisteries in 15 churches of Rome, which is obviously not a finite number. The objective of this paper is to show the contribution of particular popes to establishing and maintaining the Lateran baptistery founded by Constantine the Great and erected on the foundations of certain thermal buildings.

    This article about the baptistery in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is — to a certain extent — the continuation of the paper written by Monika Ożog about the Lateran baptistery. The source upon which this text is based is also Liber Pontificalis. We do not have the data about the founder of the analysed baptistery. Two inscriptions attributed to Damasus and known from the Mediaeval copies refer to it. What is also problematic is its exact localisation. There are some hypotheses holding that it was located behind the basilica complex as well as those, according to which it was situated inside the basilica, in its northern transept.

    Although archaeological evidence shows that Christianity existed in Nubia before the official mission of evangelization of Byzantium, however, it did not then have a centralized form. The imperial missions Justinian and Theodora established the new faith, and in effect the Nubian Christianity began to erect monumental temples dedicated to the new God. On the basis of Nubian baptisteries, as well as contemporary baptismal liturgy in the East, the author attempt was made to reconstruct the baptismal liturgy in Nubia, primarily in the area of the kingdom of Makuria.
    Choć dowody archeologiczne wskazują, że chrześcijaństwo istniało w Nubii przed oficjalnymi misjami ewangelizacyjnymi z Bizancjum, to jednak nie miało ono jeszcze formy scentralizowanej. Misje cesarskie Justyniana i Teodory ugruntowały nową wiarę, a także spowodowały, że chrześcijaństwo nubijskie zaczęło wznosić monumentalne świątynie poświęcone nowemu Bogu. Na podstawie badań baptysteriów nubijskich, a także ówczesnych liturgii chrzcielnych na Wschodzie, podjęta została próba rekonstrukcji liturgii chrzcielnej w Nubii, przede wszystkim w rejonie dongolańskim, na terenach królestwa Makurii.

    The paper focuses on early-Christian baptisteries. They were built in Provence in the period from the fourth to mid-eighth centuries. The author has presented them in a catalogue in which she placed basic information about each of the building. The information was taken from the sources and findings of archeological research. The text accompanying the catalogue is an attempt to classify the baptisteries on the basis of an analysis of their plans. The author concludes as follows: 1) the plans of urban and rural baptisteries are varied, 2) there are essential differences between the baptisteries of south Provence and those which were erected in the northern territories invaded in the fifth century by Burgundies.
