In the last decade, infrared imaging detectors trend has gone for smaller pixels and larger formats. Most of the time, this scaling is carried out at a given total sensitive area for a single focal plane array. As an example, QVGA 30 μm pitch and VGA 15 μm pitch exhibit exactly the same sensitive area. SXGA 10 μm pitch tends to be very similar, as well. This increase in format is beneficial to image resolution. However, this scaling to even smaller pixels raises questions because the pixel size becomes similar to the IR wavelength, but also to the typical transport dimensions in the absorbing material. Hence, maintaining resolution for such small pixel pitches requires a good control of the modulation transfer function and quantum efficiency of the array, while reducing the pixel size. This might not be obtained just by scaling the pixel dimensions. As an example, bulk planar structures suffer from excessive lateral diffusion length inducing pixel-to-pixel cross talk and thus degrading the modulation transfer function. Transport anisotropy in some type II superlattice structures might also be an issue for the diffusion modulation transfer function. On the other side, mesa structures might minimize cross talk by physically separating pixels, but also tend to degrade the quantum efficiency due to a non-negligible pixel fill factor shrinking down the pixel size. This paper discusses those issues, taking into account different material systems and structures, in the perspective of the expected future pixel pitch infrared focal plane arrays.

The ultrasonic ring array, designed for examining the female breast with the use of ultrasonic transmission tomography (UTT), has been adapted for reflection method trials. By altering the activation time of ultrasonic elementary transducers, the parameters of the focus were changed with the aim at improving the quality of the obtained ultrasound image. For this purpose, a phantom consisting of rods having varying thicknesses was analyzed when moving the position of the focus with the use of dynamic focusing along the symmetry axis of the ring array ranging from 30 to 130 mm from central transducers. In previous trials, which applied an algorithm using the sum of all the acoustic fields, a series of simulations was performed in conditions identical to the phantom trial. This paper documents attempts at improving the parameters of the acoustic field distribution during unconventional focusing. The research here presented is a continuation of examinations focusing on the acoustic field distribution inside the ultrasonic ring array with the aim at finding the best possible cross-section of the female breast using the reflection method.

Regular fully filled antenna arrays have been widely used in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. However, practical implementation of these arrays is rather complex and their resolutions are limited to the beamwidth of the array pattern. Therefore, higher resolution and simpler methods are desirable. In this paper, the compressed sensing method is first applied to an initial fully filled array to randomly select the most prominent and effective elements which are used to form the sparse array. To keep the dimension of the sparse array equal to that of the fully filled array, the first and the last elements were excluded from the sparseness process. In addition, some constraints on the sparse spectrum are applied to increase estimation accuracy. The optimization problem is then solved iteratively using the iterative reweighted l1 norm. Finally, a simple searching algorithm is used to detect peaks in the spectrum solution that correspond to the directions of the arriving signals. Compared with the existing scanned beam methods, such as the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) technique, and with subspace approaches, such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and ESPIRT algorithms, the proposed sparse array method offers better performance even with a lower number of array elements and in severely noisy environments. Effectiveness of the proposed sparse array method is verified via computer simulations.

The article presents a new method for the assessment of bottom echo correlation coefficient in the presence of multiple echoes. Bottom correlation coefficient is a parameter that characterizes spatial properties of echo signal. Large variability of the bottom shape or properties (for example caused by the presence of bottom objects) and the presence of the acoustic shadow strongly influence the value of the correlation coefficient. There is a problem, however, in the proper determination of correlation coefficient of the bottom echo when more than one echo is present. In the shallow water application, the echoes coming to the hydroacoustic array from various directions influence the measured value of the correlation coefficient. The method proposed by the authors challenges this issue by applying a subarray processing based on the initial depth estimation. The article presents the preliminary research results and describes the limitations of the proposed method.

The article is in line with the contemporary interests of companies from the aviation industry. It describes thermoplastic material and inspection techniques used in leading aviation companies. The subject matter of non-destructive testing currently used in aircraft inspections of composite structures is approximated and each of the methods used is briefly described. The characteristics of carbon preimpregnates in thermoplastic matrix are also presented, as well as types of thermoplastic materials and examples of their application in surface ship construction. The advantages, disadvantages and limitations for these materials are listed. The focus was put on the explanation of the ultrasonic method, which is the most commonly used method during the inspection of composite structures at the production and exploitation stage. Describing the ultrasonic method, the focus was put on echo pulse technique and the use of modern Phased Array heads. Incompatibilities most frequently occurring and detected in composite materials with thermosetting and thermoplastic matrix were listed and described. A thermoplastic flat composite panel made of carbon pre-impregnate in a high-temperature matrix (over 300°C), which was the subject of the study, was described. The results of non-destructive testing (ultrasonic method) of thermoplastic panel were presented and conclusions were drawn.
Artykuł wpisuje się we współczesne zainteresowania firm z branży lotniczej. Opisuje materiały oraz techniki inspekcji stosowane we wiodących firmach lotniczych. Przybliżono tematykę badań nieniszczących obecnie stosowanych w do inspekcji lotniczych struktur kompozytowych oraz krótko opisano każdą ze stosowanych metod. Przedstawiono również charakterystykę preimpregnatów węglowych w osnowie termoplastycznej oraz wymieniono rodzaje materiałów termoplastycznych i przykładowe zastosowanie ich w konstrukcji statków powierzchnych. Wymieniono wady, zalety oraz ograniczenia dla tych materiałów. Skoncentrowano się na wyjaśnieniu metody ultradźwiękowej, która jest najpowszechniej stosowaną metodą podczas kontroli struktur kompozytowych na etapie produkcyjnym oraz eksploatacyjnym. Opisując metodę ultradźwiękową skupiono się na technice puls echo i zastosowaniu nowoczesnych głowic wieloprzetwornikowych (Phased Array). Wymieniono i opisano niezgodności najczęściej występujące i wykrywane w materiałach kompozytowych z osnową termoutwardzalną oraz termoplastyczną. Opisano termoplastyczny płaski panel kompozytowy wykonany z preimpregnatu węglowego w osnowie wysokotemperaturowej (ponad 300°C), który stanowił obiekt badania. Zaprezentowano wyniki badań nieniszczących (metodą ultradźwiękową) panelu termoplastycznego i wyciągnięto wnioski.

Ever rising increase in number of wireless services has prompted the use of spatial multiplexing through null steering. Various algorithms provide electronic control of antenna array pattern. Simulation-driven technique further introduces correction in array factor to account for array geometry. Taguchi method is used here to combat interference in practical antenna arrays of non-isotropic elements, by incorporating the effect of antenna element pattern on array pattern control in the optimization algorithm. 4-element rectangular and bowtie patch antenna arrays are considered to validate the effectiveness of Taguchi optimization. The difference in the computed excitations and accuracy of null steering confirms the dependence of beam pattern on element factor and hence eliminates the need for extra computations performed by conventional algorithms based on array factor correction. Taguchi method employs an orthogonal array and converges rapidly to the desired radiation pattern in 25 iterations, thus signifying it to be computationally cost-effective. A higher gain and a significant reduction in side lobe level (SLL) was obtained for the bowtie array. Further, due to feed along parallel edges of the patch, the radiating edges being slanted to form the bow shape results in a significant reduction in the area as compared with the rectangular patch designed to resonate at the same frequency.

The article presents a practical approach in the application of the eddy current method in cases outside the scope and recommendations of EN/ISO 17643: 2015 [1] regarding the testing of eddy currents of welded joints. This standard does not explicitly limit the scope of application to specific materials and welding methods, but gives e.g. recommendations regarding calibration standards, probe construction and test parameters. Such a situation may cause misunderstanding and a number of wrong decisions affecting the result of the examination. The article gives several examples of eddy current testing of welded joints where a completely new approach was required that went far beyond the aforementioned standard, e.g. testing of aluminum welds, duplex steel, metallic coatings, and electron beam welding.
W artykule zaprezentowane jest praktyczne podejście w zastosowaniu metody prądów wirowych w przypadkach wykraczających poza zakres i zalecenia normy EN ISO 17643: 2015[1] dotyczącej badania prądami wirowymi połączeń spawanych. Norma ta nie ogranicza wyraźnie zakresu stosowania do konkretnych materiałów i metod spawania, natomiast podaje np. zalecenia dotyczące wzorców kalibracyjnych, budowy sond i parametrów badania. Sytuacja taka może powodować niezrozumienie i szereg błędnych decyzji wpływających na wynik badania. W artykule podano kilka przykładów badania prądami wirowymi połączeń spawanych, gdzie wymagane było zupełnie nowe podejście wykraczające daleko poza wspomnianą normę jak np. badanie spoin stali duplex, aluminium, badania poprzez powłoki metaliczne czy np. spawanie wiązką elektronów.

The lifting surface model is widely used in screw propeller design and analysis applications. It serves as a reliable tool for determination of the propeller blade mean line and pitch distribution. The main idea of this application was to determine the blade shape that would satisfy the kinematic boundary condition on its surface with the prescribed bound circulation distribution over it. In this paper a simplified lifting surface method is presented – in which the 3D task for the entire blade is replaced by a set of 2D tasks for subsequent blade section profiles.

The main goal of the article is to identify artificially created defects like lack of fusion and incomplete penetration in buttweld joint using non-destructive volumetric methods. These defects are the most serious defects in welds of steel constructionsfrom the safety point of view. For identification, an ultrasonic phased array technique and a conventional X-ray using digital imaging were used. The theoretical part of the article describes the current state of the given issue and provides basic theoretical knowledge about ultrasonic and X-ray welding tests. In the experimental part, the procedure and results of testing butt weld joint are described by both non-destructive methods. The butt weld joint was made from steel S420MC. Each indication obtained by the ultrasonic and x-ray technique is supplemented by the macrostructure of the weld taken from the indication position. The results of the experimental work mentioned in the article point to the possibility and reliability of the identification of melting defects by selected nondestructive methods in terms of their character and orientation.

Opis:
The paper presents the model of calculating ultrasound waveform beam emitted inside the circular space of ultrasonic transducer ring array and propagated through a biological medium submerged in water. Each elementary transducer emits a burst signal, which then propagates through a medium and is received by a number of transducers on the opposite side of the ring array. The method allows for calculating runtime and amplitude of ultrasonic bursts while traveling from an emitter to a receiver through a specified soft tissue section geometry, having regard to the refraction and attenuation effects and directivity pattern of transducers. The soft tissue section geometry is constructed using circular shapes with given ultrasound speed and attenuation distribution. The elaborated software creates a set of received waveforms for each transmitting transducer. The presented results produced by the software can be used as a basis for further research on inverse problems in ultrasound waveform tomography.

Most receiving antenna arrays suffer from the mutual coupling problem between antenna elements, which can critically influence the performance of the array. In this work, a novel and accurate form of compensation matrix is applied to compensate the mutual coupling in a uniform linear array (ULA). This is achieved by applying a new method based on solving a boundary value problem for the whole ULA. In this method, both self and mutual impedances are exploited in an accurate characterization of mutual impedance matrix which results in a perfect mutual coupling compensation method, and hence a very accurate direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. In the new scheme, the compensation matrix is obtained by using the relationship between measured voltage and theoretical coupled voltage based on the MOM. Numerical results show that using DOA estimation algorithms to the decoupled voltage obtained by using this method leads to an excellent performance of DOA estimation with higher accuracy and resolution.

This work shows a time-domain method for the discrimination and digitization of parameters of voltage pulses coming from optical detectors, taking into account the presence of electronic noise and afterpulsing. Our scheme is based on an FPGA-based time-to-digital converter as well as an adjustable-threshold comparator complemented with commercial elements. Here, the design, implementation and optimization of a multiphase TDC using delay lines shorter than a single clock period is also described. The performance of this signal processing system is discussed through the results from the statistical code density test, statistical distributions of measurements and information gathered from an optical detector. Unlike dual voltage threshold discriminators or constant-fraction discriminators, the proposed method uses amplitude and time information to define an adjustable discrimination window that enables the acquisition of spectra.

The paper analyses a new configuration of an electromagnetic launch system (EMLS) able to accelerate a 1-kg mass projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3,000 m/s with an acceleration length of 10 m. The analyses consist of a mathematical calculation of the value of acceleration force necessary to achieve the project objectives. Based on these results a new configuration of an EMLS is presented. The projectile is accelerated by the Lorentz force where the magnetic field is created by permanent magnets made of neodymium iron boron (NdFeB). The permanent magnets are arranged in a cylindrical Halbach array with a uniform field inside. The copper wire coils have a special design, which produce a large acceleration Lorentz force with a current under 1,000 A. A short comparative0 analysis shows the advantages of this new solution compared with well-known accelerators such as railguns and coilguns. In the next part of the paper, we present the results of a simulation of this configuration with an interactive software package based on the finite element method used to analyse and solve three-dimensional electromagnetic field problems and simulate the movement of the projectile. These results confirm the advantages of this new configuration and open the way to test the system under laboratory conditions. At the end of the paper, conclusions are presented. This new EMLS, based on Halbach array configuration, can be used as a catapult for UAVs, airplanes or missiles, as a mass driver for small satellites or as a gun, which is a better solution than railguns or coilguns.

Opis:
Composites are used in a wide variety of markets, including the aerospace, architecture, automotive and military sectors. Along with the increased use of composites, multiple non-destructive testing (NDT) methods have been further developed specifically for inspecting them. Among them, one can single out ultrasonic phased arrays. Research described in this article focuses on the use of ultrasonic PAs for production flaw investigations into an aileron. The examined part was made of up to 16 layers of BAER 3068 epoxy carbon prepreg. The investigation was carried out by using the tap test, conventional ultrasonic measurement and phased array methods. The phased array method allowed us to thoroughly check the affected specimen and confirm the presence of a production flaw in the form of epoxy resin build-up. The results show how effective this method can be and emphasize its advantages over traditional ultrasonic inspections.
