Opis:
The Tithonian ammonite succession at the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry, central Poland shows the presence of Subboreal ammonites of both NE European (“Volgian”) and NW European (“Bolonian–Portlandian”) affinity, making possible the correlation between the relevant ammonite subdivisions. The former are represented by Zaraiskites – Z. regularis Kutek and Z. zarajskensis (Michalski) as well as an early form of Virgatites – V. gerassimovi Mitta which enable the recognition of the upper part of the Scythicus Zone (the Zaraj¬skensis Subzone) and the lower part of the Virgatus Zone (the Gerassimovi Subzone) of the “Middle Volgian”. The latter are represented by Virgatopavlovia, which enables the correlation with the Fittoni Zone of the uppermost “Bolonian”, and by still younger assemblage of small-sized virgatitids – such as V. pusillus (Michalski), showing similarity to Progalbanites albani (Arkell) of the Albani Zone of the lowermost “Portlandian”. The new species established include: Zaraiskites lewinskii sp. nov. which represents a new member of the virgatitid lineage linking an older Z. pommerania (Arkell) with younger small-sized Virgatites, as well as two species of the genus Virgatopavlovia – V. janeki sp. nov. and V. dembowskae sp. nov. The appearance of ammonites of NW and NE European affinity in central Poland resulted from the opening of the new sea routes possibly related with tectonic activity in northern European areas at the transition from Early to Late Tithonian.

The "Lower Lias" mudrocks of the Charmouth Mudstone Formation inWest Dorset coast are world famous for their ammonite faunas, which range from mid Lower Sinemurian (Semicostatum Chronozone) to Lower Pliensbachian (topmost Davoei Chronozone) in age. The succession includes significant non-sequences, however, and as certain other intervals yield only crushed and relatively poorly preserved material, much of the sequence of ammonite faunas of this interval in south-west England has remained poorly understood. Inland, however, although it has been realised for many years that some of the missing horizons reappear, the Formation is very poorly exposed and as a consequence little has been known about its detailed stratigraphy and palaeontology. The systematic recording over 40 years by Mr H.C. Prudden (Montacute) of temporary excavations in East Somerset (around 20 km north of the Dorset coast), combined with material collected by others from similar exposures has now, however, revealed a virtually complete sequence of ammonite faunas through the interval represented by the Formation including from many of the which are missing on the Dorset coast. In particular, only one subchronozone remains to be conclusively proven in the region, the terminal Sinemurian, Aplanatum Subchronozone (Raricostatum Chronozone). This faunal succession is correlated with that on the coast to provide a detailed synthesis of the sequence of ammonite biohorizons in the region, which is correlated with a contemporary Standard Zonation and high-resolution biohorizonal/ zonule scheme for interval in North-West Europe. The significance for regional and international correlations of the Lower Lias is also discussed.

The Early Kimmeridgian succession in the Rogaszyn Quarry at Kodrąb (Radomsko elevation) represents mostly shallow-water carbonate platform deposits that, over wide areas of central Poland were controlled by the activity of the tectonic zone being the prolongation of the Holy Cross lineament. The ammonites collected enable precise recognition of ammonite zones – the Platynota and the Hypselocyclum zones, some subzones and horizons. The precise dating enables detailed correlation of the particular units of the succession with those recognized at the eastern and northern borders of the Wieluń Upland and the NW margin of the Holy Cross Mts. The deposits at Kodrąb from the top of the Planula Zone, through the Platynota Zone, up to the lower part of the Hypselocyclum Zone, reveal markedly smaller thicknesses equaling ~15–20% of those of coeval deposits from the adjoining areas. The differences in sedimentary evolution at Kodrąb during the Early Kimmeridgian resulted mostly from local synsedimentary tectonic movements of fault blocks. Beginning from the late Hypselocyclum Chron, these differences markedly diminished, which resulted from the uniform subsidence of a wider area, and disappearance of the shallow-water deposits of the carbonate platforms, being replaced by deeper-water deposits of the Burzenin Formation.

The ammonite biostratigraphy as well as the organic matter content, its type and maturity of the Pałuki Formation, belonging to the fine, siliciclastic Kimmeridge Clay type facies, were investigated in five deep boreholes from the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium in Central Poland. The studied deposits are assigned to the Eudoxus and Autissiodorensis zones of the Upper Kimmeridgian as well as the Klimovi, Sokolovi, Pseudoscythica and Puschi (=Tenuicostata) zones of the Lower Tithonian (“Lower Volgian”). The Pałuki Formation shows in its lower and middle parts average TOC concentrations of ca. 2.5 wt.% and prominent, restricted increases in organic matter content, which are found in the mid-Eudoxus Zone, the lowermost part of the Autisiodorensis Zone, and at the Sokolovi–Pseudoscythica zone boundary. These stratigraphical intervals correlate well with rich in organic matter levels present in the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of NW Europe. The periodic expansions of Submediterranean and Subboreal-Boreal ammonites corresponded mostly to the transgressive phases, often correlated with a higher content of organic matter. The development of special morphologies of ammonites, such as the small-sized, nectopelagic forms of Nannocardioceras in the Late Kimmeridgian, has also been related to the deposition of shales rich in organic matter during the transgression maxima. The organic matter present in the Pałuki Formation mostly consists of Type II kerogen and is immature or early mature with respect to hydrocarbon generation, which is in agreement with previously published data. Evaluation of the new and published geochemical, lithological and structural data from the Pałuki Formation in the central-eastern part of the Łódź Synclinorium shows that these deposits could not have been a considerable source of crude oil or gas.

An extensive collection of ammonites made bed by bed from sections in the Submediterranean Upper Oxfordian of the Wieluń Upland, Central Poland, is described and used as a basis for a chronostratigraphical interpretation of the deposits. The ammonites are mostly of Submediterranean character and enable the recognition of the Bimammatum Zone, including the Bimammatum and Hauffianum subzones, as well as the lowermost Planula Zone distinguished here as a new biostratigraphical horizon – the matyjai horizon – based on the occurrence of Subnebrodites matyjai Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. The Submediterranean ammonites are mostly oppeliids with Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) [M] – Glochiceras (Lingulaticeras) [m] the most numerous, as well as Taramelliceras (Richeiceras) and Taramelliceras (Metahaploceras) [M] – Glochiceras (Coryceras) [m]. The profusion of ammonites of these two groups in the stratigraphical interval studied provides new information on their evolution, and two new oppeliid species, Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) zelcense Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. and Glochiceras (Lingulaticeras) bobrownikiense Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov., are described here. Subboreal and Boreal ammonites are not common in these sections, but are nevertheless important for correlation. Subboreal ammonites of the family Aulacostephanidae are represented by the genus Vineta [M], including its newly recognized microconchiate counterpart, Vineta [m], and a newly established genus Vielunia [M] Wierzbowski et Głowniak gen. nov., with type species Vielunia dzalosinensis Wierzbowski et Głowniak sp. nov. The latter genus includes ammonites previously referred in the area of study to Ringsteadia, and with a microconchiate counterpart assigned to Prorasenia [m]. The Boreal ammonites comprise late cardioceratids assigned to Amoeboceras (Plasmatites). These ammonites indicate that the deposits in question from the Submediterranean Bimammatum Zone up to the Planula Zone correlate with the Subboreal and Boreal lowermost Kimmeridgian (Baylei Zone, and Bauhini Zone, respectively).

Opis:
The Early Kimmeridgian of the Wieluń Upland and adjoining regions, after the decline of sedimentation of the deep-neritic sponge megafacies (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.) and associated limestones and marls with poor benthic fauna (Pilica Fm.) during the Planula Chron, showed the subsequent development of moderately shallow-water biostromal chalky limestones with siliceous sponges and corals, replaced laterally by micritic limestones and marls (Prusicko Fm.) during the Platynota Chron and the earliest Hypse¬locyclum Chron. Towards the north and south shallow-marine carbonate platforms occurred (represented by deposits of the “oolitic” fm.), whereas towards the north-west and west deeper marine facies, represented initially by limestones with siliceous sponges (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.), and later during the Hypselocyclum Chron by bedded limestones and marls with ammonites (Burzenin Fm.) were deposited. This palaeogeographic pattern was controlled by the synsedimentary tectonics. The detailed biostratigraphical classification of the deposits studied from the Platynota to the Divisum zones, and their lithological character, enable the recognition of the primary sedimentary cyclicity by comparison with the well dated short eccentricity cycles in the coeval succession of south-eastern France. The two appendixes enclosed give the characteristics of: (1) the characteristics of the ammonite faunas especially of the families Ataxiocerati¬dae and Aulacostephanidae (where two new species are established – Balticeras samsonowiczi sp. nov., and Rasenioides glazeki sp. nov.); (2) the newly established lithostratigraphical units: the Prusicko Fm., and the Burzenin Fm., and the smaller rank units (members, beds) recognized therein.

Opis:
The Late Jurassic shallow-water carbonates with intervening clayey-marly deeper-water deposits in the Holy Cross Mts. area formed over large bank of the elevated part of the Northern Tethyan Shelf during about 12 myr. They comprise three main successions (I, II and III) deposited partly in different environmental conditions, controlled by tectonic and climatic factors, and still preserved in the  north-eastern margin, the north-western margin and the south-western margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. The history of sedimentation is presented according to the concept of the large tectono-stratigraphic units COK, LUK and KVB, which owe their origin to variable rates of tectonic subsidence, as introduced by Kutek (1994) for the area of central Poland. The studied deposits of the COK megasequence cor- responding to the Upper Oxfordian and the Lower Kimmeridgian up to the Hypselocyclum Zone consist of coral limestones, various grained (including oolitic) limestones, and micritic limestones formed over the gradually enlarging shallow-water carbonate platform of the Holy Cross Mts. This platform was subsequently subdivided into two elevated areas, separated by a depressed zone in the middle, bounded by the Nowe Miasto–Iłża–Bałtów Fault Zone in the north-east and the Holy Cross Fault System in the south. The younger mega- sequence LUK with it strongly transgressive character marks the successive stages of the marine transgression which entered the central, lowered part of the area of the Holy Cross Mts. from the west, where it appeared already in the early Hypselocyclum Chron. It succes- sively spread across the Holy Cross Mts. area towards the north-east and south bringing everywhere the deposition of various oyster lu- machelles and marls with ammonites at the end of the Hypselocyclum Chron and during the Divisum Chron of the Early Kimmeridgian to the Acanthicum/Mutabilis Chron of the earliest Late Kimmeridgian. The following megasequence KVB is represented by the detrital lu- machelles and chalky limestones with nereineids of the Eudoxus Chron of the Late Kimmeridgian marking the development of still younger shallow-water carbonate platform in the uplifted areas in the north-eastern and possibly the south-western margins of the moun- tains, allegedly subdivided by a deeper area of sedimentation of marly deposits. The youngest Late Jurassic deposits of the Holy Cross Mts., are very fragmentarily preserved, mostly because of Early Cretaceous uplift and erosion. They suggest an initial episode of complete drowning of the carbonate platform which became covered by marly deposits during the Early Tithonian, and the subsequent restoration of shallow-water carbonate sedimentation at the end of the Early Tithonian.

The lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy, ammonite and inoceramid faunas of the Upper Albian, Cenomanian, and Lower Turonian Karai Formation, the highest unit of the Uttatur Group in the Pondicherry Sub-Basin of the Cauvery Basin in Tamil Nadu, south India, are documented. Detailed logs and descriptions of sections between Karai and Kulakkalnattam, Odiyam and Kunnam, and north-west of Garudamangalam are presented. They provide the evidence for an ammonite zonal scheme that can be correlated in detail with sequences developed in Europe, with successive Upper Albian zones of Pervinquieria (Subschloenbachia) rostrata and P. (S.) perinflata (the latter on slight evidence), Cenomanian zones of Mantelliceras mantelli, Cunningtoniceras cunningtoni, Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) asiaticum, Pseudo calycoceras harpax, Euomphaloceras septemseriatum and Pseudspidoceras footeanum. The Lower Turonian is represented by a Neoptychites cephalotus–Mytiloides borkari fauna. Over 120 ammonite species are described, of which Puzosia (Bhimaites) falx, Protacanthoceras parva, Watinoceras elegans, Euomphaloceras varicostatum, Kamerunoceras multinodosum, and Carthaginites multituberculatus are new. The new genus Kunnamiceras, with Ammonites tropicus Kossmat, 1865 as type species, is interpreted as a paedomorphic dwarf derivative of Pseudocalycoceras harpax (Stoliczka, 1864). Ammonite faunas from shales are dominated by feebly-ornamented taxa: leiostraca; those from sandstones by strongly ornamented taxa: trachyostraca, differences interpreted as reflecting the preferred habits of adults in life. 15 species of inoceramid bivalves, including a newly described species Inoceramus chiplonkari, are recognised, with a mixed East African–Euramerican–North Pacific affinity. On the basis of the stratigraphic framework developed, a sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the Karai Formation is proposed, and correlated with those recognised in Europe, Morocco, and the United States Gulf Coast and Western Interior.

In the Cerro Mallín Quemado area (Sierra de la Vaca Muerta) the three members of the Vaca Muerta Formation (Portada Covunco, Los Catutos and Pichi Moncol) can be recognized, including the whole of the Tithonian rock-record. The ammonite fauna does not show significant differences with respect to that of the nearby locality Pampa Tril, but the record of faunal horizons is patchier. Eighteen species of ammonites were recorded through the studied sections, covering the whole of the Andean Tithonian. The current chronostratigraphic zonation of the Andean Tithonian is briefly discussed, updated and correlated with the most recent literature. From the current succession of ammonite bio-horizons previously defined in the basin, only three (picunleufuense alpha, picunleufuense beta and falculatum) were recognized definitely. Four other bio-horizons (perlaevis, erinoides, internispinosum alpha and vetustum) were recognized only tentatively, because the typical assemblages of morphotypes (morpho-species) were not clearly or completely recognized. The current regional time-correlation chart dated by the ammonite bio-horizons of the Neuquén Basin along a 70°W transect is updated with the results of the present study and additional information recently obtained from other localities

By comparison with the Lower Cretaceous of central and SE Poland, that of NW Poland (the Pomeranian, Szczecin, and Mogilno-Łódź troughs) has scarce biostratigraphic data. But, despite the lack of Lower Cretaceous exposure in the NW Polish Lowlands, borehole data, including borehole-cores and geophysical logs, allow analysis of complete successions. We refine the stratigraphic units using parallel studies of ammonites, microfauna and calcareous nannoplankton collected from the same intervals, and by correlating age-defined intervals with geophysical logs. Ostracod zones F to A are documented by the presence of ostracod assemblages representing the interval between the Upper Tithonian (ostracod zone F) and the lower part of the Upper Berriasian (ostracod zones E to A). The fragmentary and poorly preserved ammonites allowed only for distinguishing the uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian (Ryazanian), while the informal subdivisions from the central part of the basin could not be identified unequivocally. Nannoplankton recognized in the succession analysed was very rare due to shallow marine facies of the strata. Only one nannoplankton zone was recognized in the lower part of the succession studied: the CC2 Stradneria crenulata Zone (uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian and lowermost Valanginian). An additional study only on nannoplankton enabled recognition of certain boreal taxa typical of the BC2 zone of the Uppermost Riazanian. Valaginian ammonites occur in core material located closer to the central part of the trough. Some planktonic foraminiferal species indicate the Lower Aptian. Some Upper Cretaceous nannoplankton zones were also recognized: the CC9 Eiffellithus turriseiffeli (Uppermost Albian to Lower Cenomanian) and UC0, UC1-2 and UC3 zones which correspond to the Upper Albian and Lower as well as Middle Cenomanian. The sequence stratigraphic interpretation was based on geophysical logs with the application of gamma-ray, neutron-gamma, spontaneous potential and resistivity logging, as well as caliper logging. These studies allowed recognition and correlation of sedimentary sequences within the part of the sedimentary basin analysed, characterized by a similar cyclic pattern of geological phenomena described using depositional sequences as in the central and SE part of the Polish Basin. Third-order depositional sequences with maximum flooding surfaces were distinguished. Effective correlation of depositional cycles with biostratigraphy and with the global sea level curve was demonstrated for several boundaries, confirming the applicability of this method for the Polish part of the the Central-European Basin. Other boundaries recognized that are not correlatable and shifted relative to Haq’s curve may reflect autogenous factors (e.g., local tectonics) overlapping with the global changes controlled by allogenic processes

A fragmentary specimen of the diplomoceratid heteromorph Diplomoceras cylindraceum, one of three ammonite markers used for the definition of the base of the Maastrichtian Stage, is recorded from the middle Campanian of the Roztocze Hills, southeast Poland. The new find, well constrained by associated ammonites and inoceramid bivalves, represents the earliest well-dated occurrence of this species worldwide to date. Therefore, the first occurrence (FO) of D. cylindraceum is conspicuously below the traditional base of the Maastrichtian as defined by the FO of the belemnite Belemnella lanceolata. Indeed, this is also far below the boundary designated in the Global Stratotype Section at Tercis les Bains (Landes, France). A comparison of the FOs of D. cylindraceum in sections acrossEurope clearly shows a significant diachroneity, which diminishes its value for definition of the Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary.

A previously unrecorded ammonite assemblage, comprising Lepthoplites sp., Callihoplites tetragonus (Seeley, 1865), C. cf. tetragonus, Arrhaphoceras cf. substuderi Spath, 1923, Cantabrigites sp., Stoliczkaiella (Stoliczkaiella) sp., Hamites cf. duplicatus Pictet and Campiche, 1861, H. cf. subvirgulatus Spath, 1941, and H. cf. venetzianus Pictet, 1847, is described from the mid-Cretaceous condensed succession at Annopol, Poland. These specimens are preserved as pale phosphates or sandstone moulds in a bed of reworked phosphatic nodules near the top of the Albian. This assemblage has many species in common with the late late Albian faunas from condensed deposits of England, Switzerland, and France. The presence of Callihoplites tetragonus indicates the lowermost upper upper Albian Mortoniceras fallax Zone. The ammonites studied are the youngest elements in the phosphate bed, which also contains taxa as old as the middle Albian Hoplites dentatus Zone. This bed originated through condensation and reworking of nodules and fossils in a period of low net sedimentation rate, being probably a reflection of a sea-level drop at the boundary between the classic ammonite zones of Mortoniceras inflatum and Stoliczkaiella dispar.

Detailed study of all the ammonite collections gathered by the authors in the Staffin Bay sections has resulted in minor changes in the distribution of ammonite taxa, and slight modification of the position of the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. Most significant is the discovery of Pictonia (Triozites) cf. seminudata which results in the placing of the stage boundary 0.16 m below the level formerly proposed. This study discusses the evolution of the Subboreal family Aulacostephanidae, and the Boreal family Cardioceratidae, indicating changes in the patterns of individual development in the evolution of both families in terms of heterochrony. The Oxfordian/ Kimmeridgian boundary interval shows major morphological changes in both ammonite families which were released from phylogenetic constraints by heterochrony, closely related to changes in environmental conditions.

At Moenkopi Wash along the Ward Terrace escarpment of northern Arizona strata of the upper Dinosaur Canyon Member of the Moenave Formation contain sedimentary structures we interpret as casts of tetrapod burrows. Sandstone casts and in situ burrows occur concentrated in two horizons that extend several hundred meters along the Ward Terrace escarpment. The structures, hosted in beds of eolian sandstone, form interconnecting networks of burrows that branch at right angles. Individual burrow casts have sub-circular cross sections and consist of nearvertical tunnels and horizontal to low-angle galleries that connect to larger chambers. Most burrow casts measure 5 to 15 cm in diameter, are filled by sandstone of similar grain size as the host rock, and have walls that are unlined and lack external ornamentation. Bedding plane exposure of the lower horizon reveals that the density of burrows exceeds 30 vertical tunnels per square meter. One exposure in the upper horizon reveals burrows concentrated in a mound-like structure with 1 m of relief. Rhizoliths, distinguished from burrows by their typical smaller diameters, calcareous infilling, and downward branching, co-occur with these burrows in the upper horizon. The fossil burrows in the Moenave Formation appear to have been constructed by a fossorial tetrapod with social behavior similar to the modern Mediterranean blind mole-rat. Although no skeletal remains are associated with the burrows, the fossil record suggests that the most likely producers of the Moenave burrows were tritylodontid cynodonts.

A coastal exposure of the Staffin Shale Formation at Flodigarry, Staffin Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK fulfils the criteria for definition as the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Kimmeridgian Stage (Upper Jurassic). This marine shale succession was deposited during a long-term transgression, and is part of a complete, relatively well-expanded stratigraphic succession. A rich fauna of ammonites above and below the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary allows recognition of the Evoluta Subzone (Pseudocordata Zone) and Rosenkrantzi Subzone (Rosenkrantzi Zone) of the Subboreal and Boreal uppermost Oxfordian, and the Densicostata Subzone (Baylei Zone) and the Bauhini Zone of the Subboreal and Boreal lowermost Kimmeridgian). A suitable level for the boundary is thus marked by the replacement of the Subboreal Ringsteadia (M)/Microbiplices (m) by Pictonia (M)/Prorasenia (m), and by the first appearance of Boreal Amoeboceras (Plasmatites). Detailed study of the microfossils reveals an excellent dinoflagellate succession. A variety of stratigraphically important dinoflagellates are found, the assemblages being intermediate in character between Boreal and Subboreal ones. The magnetostratigraphic data, though rather troublesome to extract, shows a polarity pattern which can be confidently correlated to other UK boundary sections. The upper boundary of a normal magnetozone falls at, or very near, the proposed Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio at the boundary, based on an analysis of belemnites, lies between 0,70689 and 0,70697, averaging 0.70693. Matching worldwide trends, no distinct change in the ratio is seen across the boundary. A lack of variations in the carbon isotope composition of belemnites across the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary does not indicate perturbation in the global carbon cycle. However, high ?13C values and their scatter suggest the influence of local fractionation affecting isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the partly isolated Boreal sea. A fall in the belemnite ?18O values in the Upper Oxfordian and Lower Kimmeridgian compared to the Mid Oxfordian suggests a slight rise in seawater temperature.

The ammonite succession in the stratigraphical interval from the Bifurcatus Zone, through the Hypselum Zone, up to the lower part of the Bimammatum Zone corresponding to a large part of the Submediterranean Upper Oxfordian is studied in several sections of the Polish Jura in central Poland. The sections have yielded numerous ammonites of Submediterranean–Mediterranean affinity, but also, some of Boreal and Subboreal character. The co-occurrence of ammonites of different bioprovinces makes possible the correlation between the different zonal schemes – especially between the Subboreal/Boreal zonations and the Submediterranean/Mediterranean zonation. The correlation shows that the boundary of the Pseudocordata and Baylei zones (Subboreal) and its equivalent – the boundary of the Rosenkrantzi and Bauhini zones (Boreal), currently proposed as the primary standard of the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian boundary within its GSSP at Staffin Bay (Isle of Skye, Scotland), runs in the Submediterranean/Mediterranean Upper Oxfordian near the base of the Bimammatum Zone. This discovery removes the main obstacle against the formal recognition of the Staffin Bay section as representing the uniform base of the Kimmeridgian Stage in the World and its GSSP. The ammonite taxa recognized are commented on and/or described, and suggestions on their taxonomical and phylogenetical relations are given in the palaeontological part of the study. A new taxon is established: Microbiplices anglicus vieluniensis subsp. nov.

The stratigraphical interval of the Kimmeridgian between the Bimammatum and the Hypselocylum zones in the SW margin of the Holy Cross Mts. shows a transition from the open shelf deep-neritic sponge megafacies to the shallow-water carbonate platform, including its development and decline. The uniform progradation of the shallow-water carbonate platform occurred at the end of the Planula Chron. Development of the shallow-water carbonate platform was controlled by climatic and tectonic factors. The former induced by orbital cyclicity resulted in changes of sea-level, revealed i.a. by the incoming of open-marine ammonite faunas, the latter were related to the synsedimentary activity of faults which resulted in contrasted facies changes. The episodically occurring strong influx of siliciclastic material was at least partly controlled by the tectonic activity. The newly elaborated formal lithostratigraphic subdivision takes into account the facies development of the succession in relation to climatically and tectonically induced changes. Such is e.g. the Małogoszcz Oolite Formation, corresponding to a single 100-kyr eccentricity cycle from the late Platynota Chron to the earliest Hypselocyclum Chron, bordered from the base and top by two transgressive climatically-controlled levels. The final stage of the shallow-water platform development at the end of the Hypselocyclum Chron was marked by the successive limitation of restricted environments, and the appearance of more open-marine conditions related to tectonic subsidence of the area of study. Comparison between the carbonate platform development of the Holy Cross Mts. in central Poland, and the coeval shallow-water carbonates of the Jura Mts. in northern Switzerland and south-eastern France provides an opportunity to consider similarities in the successions which can be attributed to the climatically-controlled sedimentary cyclicity and/or the wide-ranged tectonic phenomena. The palaeontological part of the study gives comments on the classification and phylogeny of ammonites of the families Ataxioceratidae and Aulacostephanidae.
