Previous ab initio super-cell calculations of the magnetic properties of the ordered Fe$\text{}_{1-x}$Al$\text{}_{x}$ alloy in the B2 structure are extended to include the disordered state of the alloy and completed with the calculations for ordered and disordered Fe$\text{}_{1-x}$Si$\text{}_{x}$ alloys. The configurations of the Fe atoms in the anti-site (AS) positions of Fe-X super-cell with the antiferromagnetic order were found. The ground state of Fe$\text{}_{1-x}$Al$\text{}_{x}$ with x≃ 0.3 shows the antiferromagnetic order of the Fe-AS magnetic moments. The concentration dependence of the equilibrium lattice parameter and magnetic moment of Fe$\text{}_{1-x}$X$\text{}_{x}$ in the ordered and disordered state differ qualitatively.

In this paper we present experimental results on influence of Al content on the structure and saturation magnetostriction of Fe-Al-Cu-Nb-Si-B alloys after heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the existence of nanocrystalline structure after annealing at 490°C and 550°C for all samples. The crystallization temperature of FeSi phase and the temperature at which the polycrystalline transformation starts were determined from temperature dependence of electrical resistivity. Aluminium slightly decreases the first crystallization temperature and considerably decreases the saturation magnetostriction in as-quenched state.

In most cases the choice of proper alloy for combustion engine crank mechanism bearings means a compromise between various requirements. In order to increase the fatigue strength and to enhance the wear resistance the research on new materials, including the aluminium alloys, is being carried out. This paper deals with properties of aluminium bearing materials, requirements relative to their operation as well as tendencies of their future development as the bearing alloys for heavy duty diesels. Interdependences affecting bearing properties, comparison of tested bearing materials fatigue strength, controlled distribution of Si particle size in analysed bearing alloys, comparison of fatigue strength of bearing materials subjected to tests, the wear of analysed bearing alloys after engine tests are illustrated in the paper. The paper concentrates on the problems of properties of aluminium based bearing alloys, tendencies in development of aluminium alloys for highly loaded crank bearings of IC engines. Bearing of Al-Sn-Si alloy operates satisfactorily on an engine and have high fatigue strength (particularly on diesels) and posses high wear resistance, especially for a case of frequently started and stopped engine (gasoline engine) which causes difficulties in formation of continuous oil film at low crankshaft speeds.

The interest in magnetic properties of $DO_{3}$-type alloys stems from their ability to exhibit dependence of magnetic moments on local environment. It is shown that both, static and dynamic properties of the alloys based on $Fe_{3}Si$ and $Fe_{3}Al$ require further investigations. This concerns mainly the problem of selective substitution of chromium for iron, as well as spin dynamics, the latter problem is illustrated on the example of measured spin waves in Sendust.

The whole precipitation sequences of two as-cast Al-Mg-Si 6005 alloys (containing no Cu or 0.1 wt.% Cu) at 150 degree Celsjus were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and hardness examinations. The precipitation sequence of the Cu-free alloy can be expressed as: super-saturated solid solution (SSSS) → spherical G.P. zones → pre - β'' → β'' → U2 +Si + β x → Si + β β xwhile that of the Cu-containing alloy can be expressed as: SSSS → spherical G.P. zones + platelet-like G.P. zones → pre - β → β'' → Q' + β + Si → Q + β + Si. A new type of βprecipitate, namely β x here, has been discovered in the Cu-free alloy. The addition of minor Cu is found to accelerate the microstructural evolution by inducing the formation of a new type of platelet-like G.P. zone along {111} Al planes, and improve the hardening response at the over-aged stage by forming Q' and Q precipitates.
Kompletna sekwencja wydzieleń dwóch odlanych stopów Al-Mg-Si 6005 (zawierąjacych 0 i 0.1%.wag Cu), w temperaturze 150 stopni Celsjusza, została zbadana przy użyciu dyfrakcji rentgenowskiej, transmisyjnej mikroskopii elektronowej i badań twardości. Sekwencja wydzieleń w stopie nie zawierającym Cu może być przedstawiona następująco: przesycony roztwór stały → sferyczne strefy Guiniera-Prestona → pre - β'' → β'' → U2 +Si + β x → Si + β β x natomiast dla stopu zawierającego Cu następująco: przesycony roztwór stały → sferyczne i płytkowe strefy Guiniera-Prestona → pre - β → β'' → Q' + β + Si → Q + β + Si. Nowy rodzaj wydzieleń β, tj. β x , został odkryty w stopie niezawierajacym Cu. Stwierdzono, że dodatek niewielkiej ilości Cu przyspiesza zmiany mikrostruktury poprzez indukowanie tworzenia nowego typu płytkowych stref Guiniera-Prestona wzdłuż płaszczyzny {111}Al. i poprawia utwardzenie poprzez tworzenie wydzieleń Q' i Q.

Al-Mn alloys are often used for the production of automotive heat exchanger fins. During brazing at about 600°C, recrystallization and grain coarsening resulting in the reduction of the strength and possible buckling of the fin can occur. In order to obtain a good recrystallization resistance, the alloy should contain a dense and homogeneous distribution of second phase particles. The effect of Si and Fe addition on the recrystallization response of Al-Mn-Zr alloys direct-chill cast in the laboratory conditions and twin-roll cast in the industrial conditions was examined. Microstructure of the alloys was characterized during downstream processing. The particles were analyzed by light metallography, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and by means of electron backscattering diffraction. Computer assisted quantitative particle analysis was carried out on field emission gun-scanning electron microscope micrographs. Vickers hardness and electrical conductivity were measured at thicker sheets, while at the final gauge of 65 μm the 0.2% proof stress was evaluated. The best recrystallization resistance had twin-roll cast alloy containing 0.5 wt% Si and 0.2 wt% Fe.

Porosity is one of the major defects in aluminum castings, which results in a decrease of the mechanical properties. It is induced by several mechanisms (solidification shrinkage and gas segregation). One of the method for complex evaluation of macro and micro porosity in Al-Si alloys is Tatur test technique. This article deals with evaluation of porosity with help of Tatur tests for selected Al-Si alloys. These results will be compared with results obtained from simulation software ProCAST.

The results of the investigations of the laser remelting of the AlSi9Cu4 cast aluminium alloy with the anodised and non-anodised surface layer and hardness changes have been presented in this paper. The surface layer of the tested aluminium samples was remelted with the laser of a continuous work. The power density was from 8,17•103 W/cm2 to 1,63•104 W/cm2. The metallographic tests were conducted in form of light microscope investigations of the received surface layer. The main goal of the investigation was to find the relation between the laser beam power and its power density falling on a material, evaluating the shape and geometry of the remelted layers and their hardness. As the substrate material two types of surfaces of the casted AlSi9Cu4 alloy were applied – the non–treated as cast surface as well the anodized surface. As a device for this type of surface laser treatment the High Power Diode Laser was applied with a maximum power of 2.2 kW and the dimensions of the laser beam focus of 1.8 x 6.8 mm. By mind of such treatment it is also possible to increase hardness as well eliminate porosity and develop metallurgical bonding at the coating-substrate interface. Suitable operating conditions for HPDL laser treatment were finally determined, ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 kW. Under such conditions, taking into account the absorption value, the effects of laser remelting on the surface shape and roughness were studied. The results show that surface roughness is reduced with increasing laser power by the remelting process only for the non-anodised samples, and high porosity can be found in the with high power remelted areas. The laser influence increases with the heat input of the laser processing as well with the anodisation of the surface, because of the absorption enhancement ensured through the obtained alumina layer.

Reactive sintering powder metallurgy is a simple alternative to conventional melting and powder metallurgy processes. During this process, pressed powder mixture of pure metals or other precursors is transformed into bulk intermediary phases by thermally activated in situ reaction. This process was previously tested on Fe-Al and Fe-Al-Si alloys. Positive effect of silicon on the reactive sintering behaviour was determined, leading to the development of novel carbon-free high-silicon FeAl20Si20 alloy (given in wt%). In this work, the effect of nickel on the pressureless reactive sintering of Fe-Al-Si pressed powder mixtures was studied. To explain the nickel influence, differential thermal analysis was utilized. Microstructure, phase composition and porosity of the FeAl20Si20Nix (x = 0, 5, 10, 20 wt%) alloys was described. Hardness, wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance and thermal stability were evaluated as functions of nickel content. Results showed that porosity decreases with growing nickel content down to less than 3 vol.%. Oxidation rate of these alloys is more than 10 times lower than that of original FeAl20Si20 alloy. Thermal stability and abrasive wear resistance of these alloys is also superior to Fe-Al and Fe-Al-Si materials.

A comprehensive understanding of melt quality is of paramount importance for the control and prediction of actual casting characteristics. Among many phenomenons that occur during the solidification of castings, there are four that control structure and consequently mechanical properties: chemical composition, liquid metal treatment, cooling rate and temperature gradient. The cooling rate and alloy composition are among them most important. This paper investigates the effect of some major alloying elements (silicon and copper) of Al-Si-Cu alloys on the size of the secondary dendrite arm spacing. It has been shown that both alloying elements have reasonable influence on the refinement of this solidification parameter.

In the present paper glass forming ability and structure of Al-Si-Ni based alloys were investigated. Three alloys starting from the ternary Al78Si12Ni10 [alloy 1], Al75Si12Ni8Zr5 [alloy 2] and Al73Si5Ni7Cu8Zr7 [alloy 3] were subjected to melt spinning process. The mean thickness of the obtained ribbons amounted between 25 and 40 μm. XRD and DSC studies showed predominantly amorphous structure of the ribbons. STEM and HRTEM methods confirmed participation of crystalline phase identified mainly as Al solid solution with the grain size near 10 nm. The mean microhardness [0.1N] of the ribbons was measured for alloys 1 - 3 respectively: 457 HV, 369 HV and 536 HV. The high value of hardness can be related to the presence of α-Al dispersoids in the amorphous matrix.
W niniejszej pracy badano skłonność do tworzenia struktury szklistej oraz strukturę stopów na osnowie Al-Si-Ni. Trzy stopy zostały poddane procesowi odlewania na wirujący walec miedziany: Al78Si12Ni10 [stop 1], Al75Si12Ni8Zr5 [stop 2] oraz Al73Si5Ni7Cu8Zr7 [stop 3]. Grubość otrzymanych taśm wynosiła pomiędzy 25 a 40 μm. Badania rentgenowskie oraz kalorymetryczne taśm wykazały, że ich struktura jest głównie amorficzna, co potwierdziły metody STEM oraz HRTEM, ujawniając również wydzielenia krystaliczne zidentyfikowane jako roztwór aluminium o wielkości ziarna bliskiej 10 nm. Średnia mikrotwardość [0,1 HV] wyniosła odpowiednio dla stopów 1-3: 457 HV, 369 HV oraz 536 HV. Tak wysoka twardość jest przypuszczalnie związana z obecnością w strukturze amorficznej wydzieleń roztworu α-Al.

Majority of combustion engines is produced (poured) from Al-Si alloys with low thermal expansion coefficient, so called piston silumins. Hypereutectic alloys normally contain coarse, primary angular Si particles together with eutectic Si phase. The structure and mechanical properties of these alloys are highly dependent upon cooling rate, composition, modification and heat-treatment operations. In the paper one depicts use of the ATND method (thermal-voltage-derivative analysis) and regression analysis to assessment of quality of the AlSi21CuNi alloy modified with Cu-P on stage of its preparation, in aspect of obtained mechanical properties (R0,02, Rm, A5, HB). Obtained dependencies enable prediction of mechanical properties of the investigated alloy in laboratory conditions, using values of characteristic points from curves of the ATND method.

This experiment utilized five Aluminum alloys with silicon content percentages of 7, 10, 12.6, 14.5 and 17(wt)%. Ultrasonic vibration was applied to improved the quality of aluminum alloys. Sono-solidification, in which ultrasound vibrations are applied to molten metal during its solidification, is expected to cause improved mechanical properties due to grain refinement. Observed by microstructure photographs was that grains became smaller and their shapes more regular. Using ultra sound solidification α Al appeared during ultrasound treatment the eutectic solidification time was longest around 10% compared with same condition experiment without ultrasound treatment.

In the paper is presented an attempt of assessment of melting and modification effect on Rm tensile strength of Al-Si alloys poured into metallic moulds. Investigated alloys underwent refining and modification with AlSr10 master alloy. Run of the crystallization process was presented with the help of solidification curves, making use of thermal-voltage-derivative analysis (ATND). Obtained results comprise registered curves of solidification, strength tests, microstructure of the alloy and regression analysis. On base of performed regression analysis one obtained a dependencies enabling evaluation of Rm tensile strength of Al-Si alloys as early as on stage of their preparation (melting).
W pracy przedstawiono próbę oceny wpływu warunków procesu topienia i modyfikacji na wytrzymałość na rozciąganie Rm stopów Al-Si odlewanych do form metalowych. Stopy Al-Si poddano rafinacji i modyfikacji zaprawą AlSr10. Przebieg procesu krystalizacji charakteryzowano za pomocą krzywych krystalizacji. Stosowano metodę analizy termiczno-napięciowo-derywacyjnej (ATND). Wykonano próbę statyczną rozciągania oraz badania mikroskopowe wytworzonych stopów Al-Si. Analiza regresji stanowiła podstawę do uzyskania zależności pozwalającej określić prognozowaną wytrzymałość na rozciąganie Rm stopów Al-Si w procesie topienia i krystalizacji.
