Opis:
The main aim of this study was to determine the morphology, physical and chemical properties of permafrost-affected soils under different types of tundra in the central part of Spitsbergen. This is a preliminary part of detailed studies focused on the relationship between tundra vegetation and permafrost-affected soils in the Spitsbergen. The obtained results indicate that all the studied soils represent an early stage of formation and the main soil-forming process present in these soils is cryoturbation. Most of the studied soils are shallow and contain a high content of coarse rock fragments. Tundra vegetation type plays controlling role in the development and structure of surface soil horizons. All the studied soils are characterized by loamy texture and acidic or slightly acidic reaction, and these properties are not very different under various tundra vegetation types. The contents of soil organic matter are strongly dependent on the type of tundra vegetation. The highest soil organic matter content occurs at sites with well-developed vegetation such as heath and wet moss tundra. The high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for the surface soil horizons of the majority of the studied soils indicates that organic matter is poorly decomposed under all the studied tundra vegetation types. This is most likely related to low activity of soil microorganisms in the harsh High Arctic environment. However, the lowest carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was noted for surface soil horizons at sites covered with Arctic meadow, and this indicates that there occur the optimum conditions for soil organic matter decomposition.

Opis:
The subject of this study was the humus horizons in the salt-affected soils of Natura 2000 (Ciechocinek, Poland). In the adequately prepared soil, there were determined: pH in CaCl₂, total organic carbon (TOC), exchangeable cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺), salinity (EC1:5), the content of total (TP) and available phosphorus (AP), the activity of alkaline (AlP) and acid (AcP) phosphatases. TOC affected the degree of saturation of the sorption complex with basic cations, as confirmed by correlation analysis. In the analysed soil samples a series of quantitative cations of basic character is as follows: Ca²⁺>Na⁺>K⁺>Mg²⁺. Increased salinity has modified the qualitative and quantitative composition of the soil solution. Correlation analysis confirmed the significant relationship between the conduction of the electrolytic soil and the content of sodium and potassium cations. The highest value of EC1:5 was found in the soil sampled near the ditch (sites 12, 13, 16). According to PN-R-04023 (1996), this soil classifies as class V with a very low content of P available but the availability factor for phosphorus value ranged from 2.773 to 5.252% indicating that soil P was sufficient for plant growth in this habitat. Significant positive correlations were found between salinity, alkaline phosphatase and exchangeable K⁺, Na⁺. Significant negative correlations were found between EC1:5 with P available and the availability factor for this nutrient (AF). The positive significant correlations among soil alkaline phosphatase and some physicochemical properties suggested that salinization had effects on these variables. Alkaline phosphatase may be used as indicators of soil quality in salinized grassland habitat Natura 2000.

Obecnie halofity w rejonie Kujaw można spotkać m.in. w okolicach Janikowa i Mątew (dzielnica Inowrocławia) oraz w rezerwatach w Ciechocinku i Błoniu koło Łęczycy, gdzie zidentyfikowano 18 gatunków tych roślin.
In Kujawy there is the most significant concentration of unique salt-tolerant plants in Poland. Their presence is clearly associated with salt-affected soils, natural salt solutions, salt deposits, their exploitation and a soda factories, which often corresponds with this exploitation. Recently, halophytes in Kujawy are to be found in the vicinity of Janikowo and Mątwy (the latter being a district of Inowrocław), as well as within the halophyte reserves in Ciechocinek and Błonie near Łęczyca, where 18 species of such plants have been identified.

Opis:
The natural conditions of Kyrgyzstan and consequences of human-induced processes, such as inappropriate methods of irrigation, have led to the extension of salt-affected soils. Extensive areas of irrigated land have been increasingly degraded by salinization from over-irrigation and other forms of inadequate agricultural practices. Between 1985 and 1990, the area of salt-affected soils increased from 666 300 ha to 1170 300 ha (Mamytov, 1995). In recent years salinity processes have been described as one of the problems of agriculture in that area. For the last ten years many none-affected soils of the Chuy Valley have become salinized. According to Mamytov et al. (1991) the total area of salt-affected soils in the Chuy Valley exceeds 259.5 thousands ha, which is more than 42% of the research area. In this research, an attempt has been made to estimate soil salinity quantitatively and also spatially by applying remote sensing techniques. Conventional methods of mapping salt-affected soils consume a lot of energy, time and money. Remote sensing enables us to detect and to map salt-affected soils by using relatively cheap multispectral satellite data such as Landsat TM, Landsat ETM+ and TERRA ASTER. The objective of this study is to identify salt-affected soils by integrating satellite images with ground-collected data. In order to achieve this goal the best algorithms of an unsupervised and a supervised classifi cation have been chosen using TNTmips software. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Transformed Vegetation Index (TVI) have been applied to distinguish densely and partly vegetation- covered soils, which are not salt-affected. To distinguish areas covered with stone and sands from saline soils the Salinity Index (SI) has been applied. For the differentiation of arable land which is not covered with vegetation the brightness parameter of Tasseled Cap transformation has been used. All these indices were calculated from satellite images. Finding an appropriate interpretation scheme for identifying the saltaffected soils of the Chuy Valley becomes a very important factor infl uencing the accuracy of the supervised classifi cation. The temporal change of salinity accumulation is demonstrated by comparing the classifi cation’s results of the multispectral satellite images from 1994 to those of 2001. This study also includes measurements of spectral properties of collected soil samples for better understanding the difference in classifi cation accuracy of various types of salt-affected soils. Spectral refl ectance was registered from the surfaces of saline and saline-sodic soils using fi eld luminancemeter CIMEL CE 313-21 in the following wavelength bands: 450 nm, 550 nm, 650 nm and 850 nm.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the differences in microbial community structure as a result of agricultural practices. Sixteen samples of cultivated and the same number of non-cultivated soils were selected. Gel bands were identified using the GelCompar software to create the presence-absence matrix, where each band represented a bacterial operational taxonomic unit. The data were used for principal-component analysis and additionally, the Shannon-Weaver index of general diversity, Simpson index of dominance and Simpson index of diversity were calculated. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles clearly indicated differentiation of tested samples into two clusters: cultivated and non-cultivated soils. Greater numbers of dominant operational taxonomic units (65) in non-cultivated soils were noted compared to cultivated soils (47 operational taxonomic units). This implies that there was a reduction of dominant bacterial operational taxonomic units by nearly 30% in cultivated soils. Simpson dominance index expressing the number of species weighted by their abundance amounted to 1.22 in cultivated soils, whereas a 3-fold higher value (3.38) was observed in non-cultivated soils. Land-use practices seemed to be a important factors affected on biodiversity, because more than soil type determined the clustering into groups.

Opis:
The study was carried out on forest soils in the vicinity of a copper ore tailings facility and a copper smelter in Lower Silesia, Poland. Soil and litter samples were collected in the surroundings of the tailings facility under pine stands different in age (50, 18 and 11 years old) and under poplar stands (same age as the pine stands) located at an increasing distance from the copper smelter (0.5 km, 1.5 km and 2.1 km). The purpose of the study was to describe the effect of copper mining and smelting on forest soils. The following were determined in the collected soil and litter samples: pH in distilled water electrometrically with a pH meter and total concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb after digestion with perchloric acid (1:10) using the ICP-ES technique. Very high pH values were found in all organic horizons, which can evidence the alkalizing effect of dusts from the objects. In all the forest soils, the highest total concentrations of all the analyzed elements were found in humus layers, decreasing in deeper horizons of the soil profile. The total concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was much higher in forest soils under poplar stands in the vicinity of the copper smelter. The concentration of all the elements decreased rapidly with the distance from the smelter. The concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was higher than found in the vicinity of the objects on the arable soils. This can indicate a secondary rise in heavy metal concentration in the topsoil caused by the presence of a tree stand.
W ektopróchnicach wszystkich badanych gleb stwierdzono najwyższą całkowitą zawartość Cu, Zn i Pb, a zawartość pierwiastków malała w głąb profilu glebowego.

The paper describes the influence of clear−cutting on the fertility of rusty soils expressed by trophic soil index. Soils in the Spała Forest District (central Poland) were covered by coniferous or mixed coniferous forests. Clear−cutting in acidic and oligotrophic mixed coniferous forests decreased soil fertility and affected an increase of hydrolitic acidity, particularly in Oh and Bv horizons. This type of timber harvest influenced also decrease of organic carbon in the first year after cutting.

Opis:
An effective adsorption model was developed by S. Nir in 1978 for predicting adsorption to synthetic membranes and was also adapted by him afterwards to clay minerals. The main principles of the model are the solution of the electrostatic Gouy-Chapman equations while calculating the adsorbed amounts of the cations as the sum of those residing in the double-layer region and the cations that are chemically bound in a closed system. Thus, the equilibrium concentration in solution is influenced by the adsorption as the function of the amounts bound. The model was later developed and adapted for the adsorption of METAL cations, and, in most cases, the fit of calculated results to measured adsorbed amounts of cations was very good, after calibrating the model for the chemical tested, with only two adjustable parameters for each chemical. In the current work, we tested the applicability of this model for the adsorption of a monovalent and a divalent METAL cation by several soils, by considering the cation exchange capacities (CEC) and the specific surface areas (SSA) of the soils. For three out of four soils, a very good fit was obtained by using the required parameters for the calculations from previous studies of cation adsorption on clay minerals. The main advantage of the presented model over Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms is that no additional changes in the parameters were needed when the background concentration of salts in the suspensions was increased from 10 to 50 or 500 mM.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was to investigate a long-term effect of mineral fertilization (NPK vs. NPK+Ca) and manner of soil utilization (fallow vs. 4-course rotation) on soil properties and leaching of cations in a lysimeter experiment involving a sandy soil, a loess soil, and a loamy soil. The amount of leached Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and K⁺ cations depended primarily on soil kind and soil utilization. The losses of calcium and potassium were greatest on the sandy soil, the smallest calcium losses were recorded on the loess soil. About 50-120 kg Ca, 8-40 kg Mg and 2-20 kg K were leached from 1 ha of cultivated soils in a year, 150-250 kg Ca, 15-90 kg Mg, and 5-85 kg K were leached in the same conditions from uncropped fallowed soils. After 12 years a significant increase of soil acidification, proportional to pH reduction, was recorded in non-limed and fallowed treatments that coincided with the appearance of mobile Al. Mineral fertilization and leaving the soils uncropped caused a significant decrease in the degree of their base saturation (V), mainly with calcium. Those adverse changes in soil properties depended both on soil kind and starting soil pH. Liming effectively counteracted the acidification of soils fertilized with NPK.
Straty wapnia i potasu były największe z gleby piaskowej, straty wapnia - najmniejsze z gleby lessowej.

Salinization and sodification of agricultural lands in arid and semi-arid regions of the world are two limiting factors in the crop production. This study was conducted to evalu- ate the effect of readily available agricultural residues on changing some chemical properties of saline-sodic soils. Wheat, potato, sunflower, and canola residues were separately added into three saline-sodic soils at a rate of 2% by weight and thoroughly mixed with soils. Control and treat- ed soils were incubated for 168 days at a constant moisture and temperature. The pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soluble cations, available nitrate (NO 3 -) and phosphorous (P), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) were measured during the incuba- tion. The EC increased in the response to the incorporation of plant residues, whereas the pH was reduced. The application of organic components in soils increased CEC and decreased ESP. The results showed that the maximum reduction in ESP was observed in the potato treatment because of the highest Ca2+ concentration. The average reduction in ESP of treated soil samples at the end of incubation followed this order: 16.1% (potato residue-treated soil) >12.7% (canola residue-treated soil) >11.1% (wheat residue-treated soil) >9.6% (sunflower residue-treated soil). The potato residue was the most effective amendment in changing the chemical properties of saline-sodic soils in comparison with other organic residues. The results indicated that the appli- cation of organic residues had a positive impact on reducing the soil sodicity and improving the soil fertility depending on their chemical composition.

The potato residue was the most effective amendment in changing the chemical properties of saline-sodic soils in comparison with other organic residues. The results indicated that the application of organic residues had a positive impact on reducing the soil sodicity and improving the soil fertility depending on their chemical composition.
