Opis:
Drought stress is a major problem in wheat production but it could be managed by using various exogenous protectants such as gibberellic acid (GA). Although GA is a plant growth hormone, it shows a potential to protect the plant in stress conditions. To investigate the possible role of GA in mitigating drought stress, we treated wheat (Triticum aestivum ‘BARI Gom-21’) seedlings with a GA spray under semihydroponic conditions. In the experiment, the combined effect of GA and drought stress (induced by 12% polyethylene glycol) was studied after 48 h and 72 h. In the absence of exogenous GA, drought-stressed wheat seedlings showed various physiological and biochemical changes in a time-dependent manner. Malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and free proline (Pro) concentrations were increased, whereas catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities were reduced under drought stress. Gibberellic acid played a role in restoring the ascorbate (AsA) level, decreased the reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio and reduced monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activities. Gibberellic acid significantly affected the glyoxalase system. Under drought stress, the methylglyoxal (MG) concentration was increased but GA application stimulated glyoxalase I (Gly I) and glyoxalase II (Gly II) activities to protect the wheat seedlings against stress. The study concluded that the severity of drought stress in wheat depends on the growth stage and it increases with an increase in the duration of stress, whereas exogenous GA helped the seedlings to survive by upregulating antioxidant defense mechanisms and the glyoxalase system.
W celu zbadania ewentualnego oddziaływania GA w łagodzeniu stresu suszy, sadzonki pszenicy (Triticum aestivum‘BARI Gom-21’) traktowaliśmy GA w formie oprysku w warunkach pół-hydroponicznych. Kwas giberelinowy odgrywał rolę w przywracaniu prawidłowego poziomu askorbinianu (AsA), zmniejszał stosunek glutationu zredukowanego/utlenionego (GSH/GSSG) oraz obniżał aktywności reduktazy monodehydro- askorbinianowej (MDHAR) i reduktazy dehydroaskorbinianowej (DHAR). Kwas giberelinowy istotnie wpłynął na układ glioksalazy. Pod wpływem stresu suszy stężenie metyloglioksalu (MG) wzrosło, ale aplikacja GA stymulowała aktywność glioksalazy I (Gly I) i glioksalazy II (Gly II) chroniąc siewki pszenicy przed stresem. W badaniach wykazano, że natężenie stresu suszy u pszenicy zależy od etapu wzrostu i nasila się wraz z wydłużeniem czasu trwania stresu, podczas gdy egzogenny GA zwiększa możliwość przetrwania siewek poprzez wzmocnienie mechanizmów obrony antyoksydacyjnej i regulację systemu glioksalazy.

The dissolution of smithsonite in boric acid solutions was investigated. The influence of the reaction temperature, acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, particle size and stirring speed on the zinc extraction were determined in the experiments. The results show that the dissolution rate increases with increasing acid concentration and reaction temperature, and with decreasing particle size and solid-to-liquid ratio. The dissolution results were analyzed by reaction control models. The activation energy of smithsonite in boric acid solution was also calculated.

Sorption of Cd2+, Ni2+and Zn2+ions on natural (ZPCli), sodium modified (ZPCliNa) and acid modified (ZPCliH) zeolites have been investigated in function of the contact time, pH, and metal concentration by the batch technique. The characterization of ZPCIi, ZPCliNa, and ZPCliH materials was performed using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The surface area (BET) and the pHpzcwere also determined. The pH in the point of the zero charge of ZPCli, ZPCliNa, and ZPCliH zeolites was 8.25, 8.00, and 2.05, respectively. The kinetic sorption data for ZPCli, ZPCliNa and ZPCliH were well fitted to the pseudo-second order model (R2> 0.99). The linear model described the Cd, Ni and Zn sorption isotherms for ZPCliH, while for ZPCliNa and ZPCliH it was the Freundlich model. The unmodified and modified zeolitic materials showed the highest sorption capacity for Cd2+, lower for Zn2+ and Ni2+.

Opis:
This study focused on examining the effect of vegetables extract foliar application on storage quality of the grapes grape (Vitis vinifera L. cvs. ‘Perlette’ and ‘King’s Ruby’). The vines were sprayed after fruit set twice at 15 days interval at concentrations of 0, 0.20%, 0.30% and 0.40%. Fruit were harvested and kept under cold-storage at 0.5 ±0.5°C and 90% RH for 28 days. The physicochemical properties of treated and untreated berries were analyzed at 7 days intervals during the cold storage. The results showed that the pre-harvest application of vegetable extracts reduced the weight loss and inhibited the fruit decay. Treated grape also had higher ascorbic acid contents, total phenolics, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-radical (DPPH) scavenging activity, and higher soluble solid contents, titratable acidity, and reduced sugar:acid ratio. The concentration of 0.30% and cultivar ‘Kings Ruby’ gave the best result as compared to untreated control. In conclusion, pre-harvest vegetables extract application on berries showed higher antioxidant activities in grape berries, and maintained their post-harvest quality. These results indicated that foliar spray of vegetables extract could effectively improve the fruit quality, mainly through the reduction of phenolic content.

The research aimed to find suitable solutions to reduce the salinity stress of irrigation water for some types of vegetables in hydroponics under two drip and mist irrigation systems. The different concentrations of NaCl for irrigation water, are 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 ppm used. Proline (30 mg∙dm -3), humic acid (300 mg∙dm -3) and compared without any from them were used to study their effect on the yield, and water use efficiency. The results indicated that the highest spinach and courgette yield (4.657 and 5.153 kg∙m -2) was observed for the DP500 treatment, and the lowest yield (0.348 and 0.634 kg∙m -2) was observed for the SW4000 treatment, respectively. The use of humic acid led to an increased yield on average by about 16.8 and 19.3% for spinach, and 39.4 and 51.7% for courgette, under drip and mist irrigation, respectively. Using proline led to an increased average yield of about 32.9 and 33% for spinach, and 51.8 and 58.4% for courgette, under drip and mist irrigation, respectively. The highest water use efficiency (WUE) of spinach and courgette (43.1 and 51.5 kg∙m -3) was observed for the DP500 treatment, and the lowest (3.2 and 6.3 kg∙m -3) was observed for the SW4000 treatment. According to our study, the use of proline and humic acid could compensate for the adverse effects of salinity under mist spraying more than drip irrigation.

Acid leaching of Egyptian zinc ore from the Um Gheig area was carried out with sulfuric acid. This study determines the optimum conditions for dissolution of non-sulfide zinc ore. The optimum conditions are 25% -74m particle size, 45 °C temperature, 2 h leaching time, 1.1 stoichiometric molar ratio of H2SO4 to Zn, 1:3 solid/liquid ratio. The maximum filtration rate is 1.6 Mg Zn•m-2•day-1at pressure difference of 0.80 bar. The zinc recovery is about 90%. As the zinc ore contains zinc silicate, some additives were tested to enhance filtration and prevent formation of silica gel. To increase the added value of the product, zinc oxide was precipitated by a co-precipitation method in a nanosize powder with average particle size ~ 20 nm. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light using ZnO nanopowders produced at different conditions was investigated. Photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue (MB) concentration was reduced as much as 85% in 240 min with the produced nanoparticles.

Opis:
Black mold and green mold caused by Alternaria alternata and Penicillium digitatum, re- spectively, are the most important decay pathogens of tomato fruits during storage. Our research was aimed to control tomato phytopathogenic fungi A. alternata and P. digitatum in vitro and in vivo by using natural nanomaterials rosmarinic acid (RA-NPs) at concentra- tions of 0.3 and 0.6 mM, glycyrrhizic acid (GA-NPs) and glycyrrhizic acid ammounium salt (GAS-NPs) (0.1–0.2 mM). Characterizations of the tested nanoparticles were carried out by using dynamic light scattering which revealed that synthesized nanoparticles had particle sizes of less than 100 nm. In vitro studies revealed that the three tested nanopar- ticles reduced the growth of A. alternata and P. digitatum. Glycyrrhizic acid nanoparticles were the most effective in reducing the growth of the two tested pathogens followed by RA-NPs at 0.6 mM. Observations of A. alternata and P. digitatum by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed severe damage in the hyphae and deformities in the conidia due to the effect of the tested nanoparticles. In vivo results showed that, dipping tomato fruits as a post-harvest treatment in all of the tested nanoparticles at different concentrations, then stored at 10 ± 1°C and 90–95% relative humidity (RH) for 20 days greatly reduced the disease severity of infected fruits with the two tested pathogens. GA-NPs at 0.2 mM signifi- cantly reduced the development of black mold rot on tomato fruits. RA-NPs at 0.6 mM had the best effect in controlling P. digitatum of all naturally and artificially inoculated tomato fruits. Also, individual treatments of tomato fruits with RA-NPs, GA-NPs and GAS-NPs significantly reduced postharvest losses of fruit since they delayed decay and maintained fruit quality characteristics such as fruit firmness, titratable acidity and total soluble solids during cold storage.

Opis:
This experiment was designed to study the effects of supplementing laying hens’ diets with vermiculite (V) and vermiculite mixed with fishmeal (FM) on productivity, morphometric parameters, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of eggs as well as on some blood plasma indicators of laying hens. Hajseks White birds were randomly divided into 5 groups (20 birds per group) and 24-weeks-old hens were fed for 2 months with: A-base diet (BD) (control group), B and C-base diet with 3% or 5% vermiculite and D and E-base diet and 1% vermiculite + 2% fish meal or 1.5% vermiculite + 3.5% fish meal. In two tested groups of hens fed with V+FM, the productivity of eggs was higher than in the control group. Hens in groups B and C laid 100 eggs more than the control group and group D and E produced about 200 eggs more after feeding with V+FM. A higher content of protein, carbohydrates and energy value of eggs were observed. The average egg weight was the highest in group E, where also the weights of protein, white and yolk of eggs were the highest. Eggs of group C hens had the highest parameters of weight, thickness and density of the shell. The results showed that supplementation of V+F significantly affected the concentration of fatty acids (FA) and the protein content in the yolk and white. Feeding a diet supplemened with minerals and proteins led to an increase in the total fatty acid content and dietary mono- (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The level of n-6 FA (especially linoleic and linolenic acids) was significantly increased in eggs of hens from groups D and E. The content of protein, WBC, HGT, calcium in blood of hens group fed with combination of V+FM was higher. The observed high mineral nutritional value implicates that a vermiculite additive could be used in the production of high quality poultry products. For the future of the poultry industry, especially in developing countries, this novel knowledge of vermiculite as a feed additive is very important.

In the present research, an experimental investigation was conducted to assess the heat transfer coefficient of aqueous citric acid mixtures. The experimental facility provides conditions to assess the influence of various operating conditions such as the heat flux (0–190 kW/m2), mass flux (353–1059 kg/m2s) and the concentration of citric acid in water (10%–50% by volume) with a view to measure the subcooled flow boiling heat transfer coefficient of the mixture. The results showed that two main heat transfer mechanisms can be identified including the forced convective and nucleate boiling heat transfer. The onset point of nucleate boiling was also identified, which separates the forced convective heat transfer domain from the nucleate boiling region. The heat transfer coefficient was found to be higher in the nucleate boiling regime due to the presence of bubbles and their interaction. Also, the influence of heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient was more pronounced in the nucleate boiling heat transfer domain, which was also attributed to the increase in bubble size and rate of bubble formation. The obtained results were also compared with those theoretically obtained using the Chen type model and with some experimental data reported in the literature. Results were within a fair agreement of 22% against the Chen model and within 15% against the experimental data.

To develop a protein rich sorghum weaning food in a country with high poverty rate, the effects of adding soybeans and tiger-nut, two different ratios was formulated, R1 and R2. R1 was formulated in the ratio 5:3:2 (comprising of 50% sorghum, 30% soybean and 20% tiger nut flours) while R2 was formulated in the ratios 4:4:2 (40% sorghum, 40% soybeans and 20% tiger nut flours), respectively. Two fermentation processes was done for the ratios, starter (single) base fermentation ratios (SBFR) and spontaneous fermentation ratios (SPFR). Microbial analysis (total bacteria, yeast count, lactic acid bacteria count and enteric bacteria counts) were done after every 6 hrs of fermentation. The highest total bacterial count obtained was (4.4×105) in SPFR2 while the lowest count was 2.4×102 in SBFR1. Lactic acid bacteria range from 6.2×105 to 1.0×103. The highest enteric bacteria count was observed in SPFR1 (9.0×104) while highest yeast count (1.3×105) was observed in SPFR2. No growths were recorded for yeast and enteric bacteria after 12 to 24 hrs of fermentation for the starter based products. The results showed that the overall nutritional quality of sample SBFR1 was superior than sample SBFR2. Sample SBFR1 and had the higher total energy, protein content and reasonable amount of carbohydrates. The fermentation improves the nutritional qualities of locally produced sorghum weaning foods. Fortification of these foods with soybeans and tiger nut can be an added advantage as this may likely be a remedy to solving the menace of protein energy mal-nutrition in the developing countries and it was also confirmed that lactic acid bacteria used as starter, control the growth of yeast and enteric bacteria there by increasing the safety and shelf life of the product.
