    The article shows that the birth of a child is not just a physical, but also a social and cultural event. It might be considered as a rite of passage that turns women into mothers and men into fathers, and both into parents. For men, the birth of a child is a significant change in life that is commonly taken for granted. As a result, life for most men changes fundamentally with the birth of a child. In addition, many fathers see the pregnancy, birth and the months thereafter as an extremely important time in their lives, during which they turn from a man into a father. Simultaneously, many of them embrace the fact of what an enrichment the children are for their own personal development. In these months the fathers are undergoing consequent transformation processes which demand certain efforts and are sometimes painful. In the process, they train new practices of fatherhood in the familiar living together.

    In the Danish educational system, it is possible to enter an academic master’s programme on the basis of a professional bachelor’s degree combined with some years in the job market, for example as a social educator. These adult students share lectures with the younger university students but are challenged on several levels. The aim of the article is to understand how adult students approach the pursuit of a second degree, using a sociological perspective. Based on biographic interviews with mature students at the Danish School of Education, an analysis of their backgrounds, the paths their lives’ follow, and the narratives on which they draw, it is shown how their endeavours can be construed as a rite of passage. It demonstrates how the individual students’ life courses include factors that influence not only the content of their studies, but also their life expectations.
    W duńskim systemie edukacji możliwe jest podjęcie studiów magisterskich na podstawie licencjatu i kilkuletniego doświadczenia zawodowego np. edukatora społecznego. Dorośli studenci uczestniczą w wykładach razem z młodszymi, jednakże na wielu płaszczyznach mogą napotkać wyzwania. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zrozumienie z perspektywy socjologicznej podejścia dorosłych osób do edukacji na studiach magisterskich. Wywiady biograficzne z dojrzałymi studentami Duńskiej Szkoły Edukacji, analizy uprzednich doświadczeń tych osób, ich dróg życiowych oraz historii, do których się odwołują, pozwoliły zinterpretować ich działania jako rytuał przejścia. Autorka pokazuje też, jak drogi życiowe poszczególnych studentów wpływają nie tylko na treść ich studiów, ale także na życiowe oczekiwania.

    Based on ethnological fieldwork, the author presents a picture of the initiation and the Lomwe girls’ rite of passage. To describe the rite of passage as it is today, she puts it in a historical context. She indicates the causes of transformations and changes that have occurred in initiation rituals in the northern part of Mozambique. The author points out the place, time and structure of the ritual. Above all, however, she focuses on body modifications and their significance, which are inherent elements of the initiation of Lomwe girls.

    One of the distinguishing characteristics of Marguerite Duras’ works is her focus on contradictions, especially in the realm of physicality, which is part of the “dialectic of desire”, a nonverbal pleasure. In the analysed novels: The Sea Wall and The Lover this passion manifests itself through the “rite of passage”. It is a double discovery of one’s own and someone else’s physicality. Duras perceives love as an un-controllable, violent “experiment”, a rebellion against one’s mother and restrictions.Narrating one of the most important (and secret) episodes of her life – crossing the Mekong – the author depicts the sexual initiation of a young heroine (Duras’ alter ego), who seduces a mature man with her behaviour and dress. This experience al-lows her to experience the absolute and become initiated and free. For the narrator it is an opportunity for in-depth analysis of the secular and the sacred aspects of desire. To fully understand the sacred and the profane in Duras’ works, it seems necessary to approach the phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective.

    Anthropological concept of rites the passage in the sphere of pre-school education was applied in the paper. In the case of the ritual of appointing as preschool child one faces specific ritual as regards the place in which it takes place (kindergarten institution) and persons to which it is applied (children at the age of 3 and 4). The aim of a ceremony is socialization of an individual and integration with a group in the first place. Rites of passage share with the analyzed preschool ritual such features as rigid role scheme, structure of a ceremony of ritual actions, functions of a ritual, and the fact that by this ritual integration and cohesion of a group is maintained and the children’s bound with kindergarten workers is augmented. Although the ceremony of appointing as preschool child does not change the status of an individual, it performs important role related to role playing, international functions and the functions set on auto-identification of a child (that stem from group activity). Moreover, by the ceremony the youngest children can show their parents that they learn new abilities, partly different than the ones they experience at their homes. Methodological approach used in the study can be labeled as participant secret observation, close to the “participant-as-observer” category. The ceremony was observed in one of kindergartens in Toruń, in 26 children group, labeled as “Ladybirds”. Field observation was completed, firstly, by the photographic documentation (done during the ritual), secondly, by the ritual scenario (written by the kindergarten teachers), and thirdly, by the interview with the tutor of the observed group of children.

    Aims.The research aims to reconstruct the phases of the new ritual of graduation in Italy to fully understand if there are a variety of social forms and conventions (linked to symbolic aspects) to be satisfied and if there are elements of ambiguity. Methods.Using ethnographic technique, I chose to develop on the one hand a thick description of the ritual that highlights the "stratified hierarchy of significant structures" (Geertz 1998) while on the other I tried to develop a comparative methodology that takes into account - both temporal and spatial level - of some of the different graduation ritual models that exist and have existed. Results.  The analysis shows that there is a lack of consistency between the new degree model and the new graduation ceremony model. Furthermore, in the one hand, the liminal theatricality of the rite satisfies the demands of collective catharsis; on the other hand, there are some ambivalences and there is a lack of consistency between the conventions (and its symbolisms) in the ceremony and the university experiences that students could have in Italy. Lastly, the moral entrepreneurs paid too little attention to the original meanings of the model of celebration from which it draws and its criticality. Conclusions.Rituals in the educational field are very important socio-cultural forms of production of meanings whose modification could be more satisfactory if there was a greater reflection on the original educational models and if, in this reflection, they were involved a large number of subjects belonging to different groups.

    In the article, Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands is analyzed. Drawing from Vladimir Propp’s theory the author traces the presence of structures, and stylistic and narrative features characteristic of fairy tales. In the second part of the essay, it is argued that through the use of fairy tales Burton is able to introduce the motif of the rite of passage of the main protagonist.

    Jeffrey J. Arnett’s Concept of Emerging Adulthood as an Extended Liminal Phase of the Rite of Passage The article includes a comparison of the developmental stage spreading between adolescence and early adulthood recently called after Jeffrey J. Arnette (2004, 2007) the emerging adulthood, to the liminal phase of the rite of passage first enunciated by Arnold van Gennep (1909/2006) and Victor Turner (2005). According to the formulated thesis it is stated that the stage of emerging adulthood, treated in contemporary western psychology as a new developmental stage, characteristic for hi-tech societies, is a far and residual equivalent of the liminal (marginal) phase of the rite of passage, in its extended form. Both the society of participants of this ritual in its liminal phase, called by Turner communitas, and the society of young people entering adulthood, are characterised mainly by the feeling of “being in-between”. Both those social groups have left behind the previous stage, yet not reached the new one. After presenting the concept of the rite of passage consisting of three phases, together with the idea of liminality linked to it, the contemporary phenomenon of extending the psychosocial moratorium and the concept of Arnette’s emerging adulthood, there is an analysis of the similarities and differences between the liminal phase and the stage of emerging adulthood. The latter of the phenomena is closely linked to the specificity of western culture (such as degradation and disappearance of rites of passage in their traditional forms, orientation towards consumption and hedonism), and seems to have its source in the psychic qualities of young people such as i.e. the lack of readiness to take up the responsibility for others and to take care of them.

    The axis of "The Shadow-Line" by Joseph Conrad is the issue of initiation in the seaman craft and, at the same time crossing the threshold of adulthood. The author of the article, referring to the concept of the rites of passage of van Gennep, Turner and Eliade, as well as the model of Campbell’s mythic “hero’s journey”, analyses the process and anthropological implications of this initiation and considers to what extent the rites de passage are universal, and to what extent they are contextual. The ship crew turns out to be a communitas, a community of the liminal phase of the rite of passage, and the protagonist must realize the model-archetype in concrete circumstances. Even though the plot resembles the structure of a magical tale, one may find there the cultural reality of seamen’s work and the Victorian era.

    In Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, a holiday is a ritual understood as a particular social structure. It has elements such as time and ritual space, objects and interactions, as well as a body and a language. Describing and analysing the dynamic of social celebratory rituals allows the role they play in social life and culture to be revealed. It emerges that on the one hand, the integrating nature of rituals strengthens the social structure and maintains cultural values and norms, while on the other it influences the shaping of the habitus and its transformation. Bourdieu takes into account traditional and contemporary aspects of celebration - (1) religious and magic, etc., rites of passage in the society of Kabylia in Algeria, and (2) French culture, which is familiar to him. Celebratory rituals are subject to institutionalisation, differentiation and individualisation. A change in the meaning of the idea of the sacrum in celebrating entails new traits that are characteristic of lay rituals. Ritual - ‘the structuring structure’ and the ‘structured structure’ - reflects social transformation, as is captured in Bourdieu’s analysis of different cultures’ experience of celebrating, in different times and locations.

    Istotą tej wypowiedzi jest próba wykazania, iż Letnie Szkoły Młodych Pedagogów w swojej autorskiej formie, realizowanej przez Marię Dudzikową, były ukształcającym (Bildung) fenomenem pedagogicznym, a przy tym polifonicznym zjawiskiem kulturowym. Jako fenomen pedagogiczny, odegrały unifikującą i holistyczną rolę w kształtowaniu myśli pedagogicznej rozwijanej w Polsce od 1993 roku. Natomiast jako zjawisko kulturowe, stały się wykonawczymi (performatywnymi) spektaklami rzeczywistości pedagogicznej, które sprowadzam do pojęcia Szkołowni – polifonicznej formy performatywnych gatunków kulturowych wykonań, stanowiących konceptualne podłożę dla liminalnych przemian świadomości jednostek, jak i samej pedagogiki.
    The essence of this statement is the attempt to demonstrate, that Summer Schools of Young Pedagogues in his own (original) form, implemented by Maria Dudzikowa, were ukształcającym (Bildung) phenomenon pedagogical, and at the same, a polyphonic cultural occurrence. As a pedagogical phenomenon, played a unifying and holistic role in shaping the pedagogical thought developed in Poland since 1993. As a cultural occurrence, they became executive (performative) spectacles of pedagogical reality, which I bring to the notion of Szkołownia - polyphonic form of performative genres of cultural executive, constituting a conceptual foundation for liminal changes of consciousness of individuals, as well as pedagogy itself.
