Opis:
The article entitled “Rafał Wojaczek: Advertisement in the Light of a Legend” is the first part of a draft which tries to describe a breakthrough moment, in which the biography of Rafał Wojaczek coincides with the beginning of his literary output. The author makes a central point of the formula: “advertisement is the engine of trade” (appearing in the notebook collecting his early poetical notes from the period of studies at Polish philology), which is placed in contrast to the statement by Julian Przyboś: “the art of a poem is the engine of poetry”. The author, examining the earlier editions of Wojaczek’s poems explains (using the sociological and philosophical apparatus) the mechanisms conditioning the phenomenon of the reception of his poetry. At the same time, he launches the notion of pre-reception, which—being a labile notion, situated in the borderland between reception and advertise-ment—indicates a dual position of an object, to which the pre-reception refers (presence and absence at the same time). This, in turn, announces the poetic strategy of Wojaczek, embracing the form and the subject matter of a poem (expressiveness against a precise structure of a poem), and foretells a subsequent part focusing on the question of the actual reception, taking into consideration the somatic character of his output as well as its autothematic involvement.

Opis:
Navigation applications and the mobile maps that are integral to them are now widely used all over the world. The most popular applications of this type, such as Google Maps, has more than a billion users a month. To save time, users of navigation applications generally use the maps without referring to their legends, which are not shown in the default settings. In such circumstances, only intuitive symbols are read correctly. Mobile maps often have an extensive system of point symbols (POIs - points of interests), and navigation applications sometimes difer significantly in the symbols they use. Point symbols have been the subject of theoretical considerations and empirical studies of users, but there is a lack of comparative research indicating more and less eefctive solutions for designing intuitive symbols on mobile maps. This article presents the results of empirical research on the intuitiveness of POI symbols used in selected navigation applications. The study was conducted in the form of a questionnaire with 127 respondents. The results conrfimed the hypo thesis that the analysed symbols used in navigation applications would difer in level of intuitiveness. In addi tion, features of design solutions that increase or decrease the intuitiveness of point symbols were identified.

Among literary motives forming the mythology of western culture the story of Faust is one of the most cited and most interpreted stories. Since 1587, when the history of the medieval alchemist named Faust was taken into print for the first time, many new versions of this legend have been released, often substantially diverging from the original. This article is an attempt to reconstruct the birth of Faustian motive, but also cultural and historical conditioning existing within its transformations. Using the works of authorities in the field of faustology, the author looks at key issues referring to the figure of the famous magus, such as: authenticity of Faust; his birth, place of residence, education and alchemic practice, relationships with other people and finally date, place and circumstances of his death. After this insightful introduction into the history of Faust, the author presents a concise summary and analysis of The History of Doctor Faustus (1587), which is a literary prototype of the legend about Faust. She finishes her article formulating her own hypothesis about the causes of never-ending attractiveness and significance of Faustian motive.

The article discusses several screen adaptations of the drama Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds  by Szymon An-ski. Written on the basis of an old Jewish legend, An-ski’s play has provided inspiration for many movies. The four analysed works represent different cultural traditions and film genres and come from different decades of the cinema history. Diverse as they are, these four works emphasize different issues. They are: Dybbuk by M. Waszyński – the best Polish movie in Yiddish exploring the Jewish folklore; A Serious Man  by the Coen brothers, with a ‘dybbuk’ prologue that redefines their art towards the Judaic tradition, as well as two other works that are strongly characteristic of the film genres that they represent: The Possession  by O. Bornedal, using the poetics of religious horror, and the Polish thriller The Demon  by M. Wrona, drawing from the tradition of the national drama as defined by Wesele  [The Wedding ] by S. Wyspiański and its screen adaptations and travestations.

The present article is an academic study on the wartime fate of Stanisław Basaj, nome de guerre “Ryś”, one of the best-known commanders of the Peasants’ Battalions guerrillas in the Lublin region. The author raises the issue of the conflict between Basaj and the Home Army and the Ukrainians in the Zamość region in 1943-1944/1945 and cooperation with the Soviet guerrillas in the final period of the German occupation and cooperation with the local Communist authorities after July 1944. At the same time, the article includes attempts at separating facts from myths that have been surrounding the figure of “Ryś” since the Polish People’s Republic. The figure is still a legend for many Polish residents of the Hrubieszów area and a villain for the local Ukrainians.

Analysis take over the earliest — generally of 15th Century painting from Italian area — images, as well as, engravings that contemporary belong to the British Museum, and originating mainly in German countries in 16th Century. Variety of possible frames according to this legend shows not only differences in a form of crafts, but also opposite ways of looking at the figure of August and a value of this anecdote in order to understand the meaning of all his achievements. Apart from literally correctness of illustrations from this story, there is also a image of a child being present in a study of the Saint, who accompanied him at work.

The Scythian descent legend in Herodotus IV 5-7 contains four Old Iranian personal names and five tribal names. With the interpretations adopted here, Targítaos comes to mean ‘the father of mankind’, and his three sons become the primeval kings (-xsay-) and the progenitors of historical Scythian tribes. Lipóxais means ‘the ruler of the peninsula’ of Crimean Scythians (Aukhatai), Arpóxais means ‘kinglet’ of the nomad Scythians who live across the river, and Kolaxais means ‘the ruler of all, i.e. the great king’ of the royal Scythians (Paralatai); the last case may be about a throne name, based on the royal horse sacrifice which underlies perhaps the legend of the Scythian pursuit of the Crimmerians.

The main purpose of this paper is to reveal some of the diversity that a legend contains, and show that an analysis of this type of text can be a tool for dissemination and discovery learning. The analysis in this article is made from a multi-perspective approach: a literary perspective, religion, historical, mythical and folkloric perspective. The word legend is characterized in Norway as religious texts. The proper Norwegian term for the text being analysed here is actually “sagn”. However, I choose here in the English language to use the word legend instead.

The anecdote bears the traits of a recurring motif, which appears in various places and times. It is a kind of urban legend, being a verbal folklore genre, which has so far been considered only in relation to modern times. The clock became its hero due to the important role it played in the city space.

Autorka analizuje współczesną legendę literacką na przykładzie postaci Rafała Wojaczka. Refl eksję opiera na trzech problemach. Dlaczego zbudowanie legendy jest możliwe w literaturze nowoczesnej? Jak kształtują wizerunek Wojaczka opublikowane wspomnienia? Kto i dlaczego konstruuje legendę?
The author analyses the phenomenon of a literary legend, taking as an example the figure of Rafał Wojaczek. The author assumes that the legend, understood broadly, is both a social and a cultural phenomenon, shaped by the rules of the art governing the field of modern literature; as well as a discourse depending on other discourses: literary and critical literary. The Author’s reflection is based on three questions: Why is it possible to create a legend in modern literature? How do the published memories shape the image of Wojaczek? Who creates the legend and why?

Osanna Triangle, also known as a triangular diagram, is a specific method of data presentation, used in statistics and socio-economic cartography to present phenomena of three-fold structure. This type of diagram presents which part of the whole is composed by particular elements, what the proportion of those elements is and how similar elements in two or more various entities compare. It is used as an independent presentation form as well as a legend of thematic maps. The term 'Osanna Triangle' comes from a name of a German mineralogist, Alfred Karl Osanna (1859-1923), who analyzed minerals according to their atomic and particle contents. The chemical classification of rocks, which he prepared, was presented on triangular diagrams. Osanna Triagle is a diagram of relations of three variables placed in a system of three coordinates. The location of each point within the triangle is determined by three coordinates, read at its sides, on heights led from its angles or on lines of the grid (fig. 2). Proper interpretation of the diagram bases on the understanding of significance of points' placement within the triangle. Often the triangle is divided into smaller units (triangles, rectangles) in order to establish areas where points with similar features occur (fig. 4). This diagram can be used to present the structure of a given statistical set and also conclusions about the whole set (fig. 5). Also, it can show the dynamics of a phenomenon through changing value of particular elements of the structure in time (fig. 6). Osanna Triangle is frequently used as an explanation, map legend, most often related to a choropleth presentation. Basing on a triangular diagram one can conclude about the distribution of phenomenon's value and determine choropleth classes. Application of an unorthodox triangular set of coordinates, to which we are not used, makes the perception of Osanna Triangle rather difficult. Perhaps this is why this method of data presentation is not commonly used.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono wyniki badania empirycznego, w którym analizowano relacje między legendami o różnej kompozycji a sposobem integracji informacji z mapy i legendy (sposobem rozpoznania znaczenia symboli) w trakcie użytkowania mapy. Badano również zakres treści odczytywanej z legendy oraz zmianę procedur integracji informacji z mapy i legendy wraz z poznawaniem treści mapy.
The legend is critical to proper reading and interpretation thematic map. A legend is a symbol dictionary that explains the signs used in a map, but it also serves several other functions. Furthermore, it is important to understand how information is acquired from a legend and a map. Pickle et al. (1995), when analyzing statistical maps, indicated two strategies that a map user can apply to reading a legend: the map-to-legend strategy (an orientation to the map, then matching the interesting objects to the legend) or the legend-to-map strategy (study the legend, and then locating the read objects on the map). The goal of the reported here analysis is to identify some of the variables that affect legend reading process, namely the strategies of integration information from a legend and a map. The research applies legends of thematic maps with nominal and ordinal information. The information from map and legend is integrated in various ways, e.g. in two above mentioned strategies, and intuitive (relying on the own knowledge or just guessing the meaning of sign). To achieve above mentioned goals the experiment was designed. It aims to simulate the execution of three problem-solving tasks based on the information derived from maps with differently designed legends. Hence the independent variable is the legend design: 'list legend', 'grouping legend' and 'natural legend' with the most clear characteristics of the map language (fig. 6). The think-aloud method was applied: subjects were asked to voice their thoughts during the tasks executions. Based on the coded think-aloud protocols the triangular graphs were developed (fig. 9). The graphs show percentage of recognized symbols using each strategy. Users of natural legend applied legend-to-map strategy the most often, and hardly ever used map-to-legend strategy. There were even some subjects who used intuitive strategy for most recognized signs. The natural legend resulted in the most frequent usage of intuitive strategy among the three tested legend designs. Whereas the map-to-legend was applied the most often by users of list legend. The first task resulted in the use of legend based strategy for most recognized symbols. Solving the second task subjects applied map-to-legend strategy more frequently than in the first task, although many subjects applied each strategy in similar frequency. In the last task most subjects used only legend-to-map strategy. The strategy applied depends on the sequence of task and the kind of legend design used. The learning effect is important, as well as the different requirements of each solved task. Reading the map with unknown content, subjects usually started with studying the legend (legend-to-map strategy). Next question resulted in lower percentage of symbols recognized using this strategy than in the first task, and more often applying intuitive strategy - hence users referred to the information they had perceived in the previous tasks. The results indicated that during the contact with the map of unknown content users most often applied recommended legend-to-map strategy. After reviewing the contents of maps and legends (during the second task), users often resigned using legend, basing on the information perceived during the first task. Furthermore, it was noticed that users perceived only limited scope of information presented on map. The number of identified signs was positively correlated with frequency of legend-to-map strategy appliance.

Attempts have been made in order to overcome, at least partially, some of the prejudices and misconceptions that have been accumulated around New Athens for the last two centuries.Even though the encyclopedia is not particularly innovative in the context of European learning at that time, one cannot simply regard it as an example of obscurantism. The book represents a typical scientific approach characteristic of the pre-Enlightenment period. Chmielowski himself was far from being a noncritical compiler; he was rather a creative author who pioneered in quite a few forms of contemporary journalism. It certainly cannot be denied that he had a great erudition and a talent for writing. The authors to whom he referred were not, as it was commonly believed, medieval authors, but they belonged to the scientific elite of the 16th and 17th centuries. The reverend has numerous merits such as: providing the first compilation of dates and events in the Polish history as well as presenting valuable information about libraries and academies of that time. One should also notice Chmielowski’s empirical approach in the process of proving numerous theories. The author’s original stile of writing also attracts the reader’s attention. Although numerous attempts have been made in order to rehabilitate the encyclopedia, it is still associated with negative judgements, also in the serious literature of the subject. Today the encyclopedia remains in the first place the symbol of ignorance of the Saxon times in Poland.

Opis:
Autor analizuje graficzne skale wartości stosowane w legendach map: kartogramów, kartodiagramów i map izoliniowych; stara się wyjaśnić różne sposoby konstrukcji legend ilościowych przedstawień kartograficznych i ocenić ich poprawność.
Twenty years ago Polish Cartographic Review published articles on the composition of legends on choropleth and isopleth maps as well as graduated symbol maps (J. Pasławski 1982, I. Frączek 1983). They proposed a set of optimal legends, the number of which can limit the freedom of designing maps, e.g. it does not recommend horizontal arrangement of color scales in the legends of choropleth and isopleth maps. At the same time, contrary methods are widely applied in maps, atlases and cartography handbooks. The article analyzes elements of the composition of legends of quantitive cartographic presentations: - continuity of the graphic value scale (bar scale or segments) - orientation (positively and negatively oriented scales) - value description (limit values or classes) Some of the solutions applied in maps can not be justified. Fragmentation of color thematic scales, for example, is a mistake (fig. 1). Negatively oriented scales are also wrong (the positive part of scale at the botton or on the right, as in fig. 10B); various orientations should not appear in the same atlas or even legend (fig. 13). Some methods of scale composition can be accepted as exceptions, e.g. positive vertical scale following the direction of reading of a text column (fig. 8); model diagrams arranged decreasingly because of the composition of the map (fig. 12). According to the author these also exist correct graphic solutions, used from the point of view of map composition, although have not been recommended in the above articles. They include: 1. Horizontal, positively oriented color scale (with the maximum value on the right). It agrees with our reading scheme and the orientation of the X axis on the surface (fig. 8,9). 2. Legend of a continuous graduated symbol map in form of overlapping diagrams. Continuous graduated symbol maps belong to the type of so called "seeing maps" (carte a voir), with present the distribution of phenome na on general level; particular values can be read, but their role is secondary. Therefore a cartographer should be free to decide, if there is a need for a legend in a form of a graph, which makes it possible to read particular values (fig. 17), or if a minimal legend composed of overlapping diagrams would be sufficient (fog. 15A). 3. Scale of a choropleth map in a form of a bar diagram. A legend of a choropleth map can have a form of a code chart or a diagram. A code chart is composed of a series of color segments with numeral or verbal information assigned to them (in the case of nominal value scales). A bar diagram in the form of a rectangle symbolizes a set of data (values of a phenomenon) and its subdivision into classes; it can be applied in legends of both isarythmic and choropleth maps. In the case of a choropleth map class ranges should be described; in the case of an isarythmic map - class limits. Fig. 20 presents various graphic color scales of a choropleth map in a form of a bar diagram. J. Pasławski recommends scale E; it is a construction intermediate between a code chart and a diagram (segments show class ranges).

Opis:
The paper depicts a tragic quarrel between bishop Stanislaus and a powerful monarch Bolesław II the Generous in the 11th century. The repercussions of this event shook the very foundations of the state and led to the exile of the ruler who had immersed himself in foreign affairs and, curiously enough, had been a great benefactor and a generous donor for the Polish Church. The bloody outcome of this confrontation came to be a fertile ground on which the legend of Stanislaus was to thrive. The legend would soon place him next to central figures of the reborn kingdom of Władysław I the Elbow-high who needed a new interpretation of homeland’s history in the aftermath of the unprecedented coronation in Cracow. Stanislaus’ hagiography is being born slowly and it is evidently shaped by political and social demand. Humble beginnings and harbingers of this process perceptible in the 12th century turn into a widespread phenomenon in the following decades. Eventually, thanks to Wincenty Kadłubek’s narrative and the work of Wincenty of Kielcza it was in 1253 that the canonization of Stanislaus could take place. Stanislaus’ road to the altars is juxtaposed by the author with a hypothetical reconstruction of the events offered by historians. Finally, it is against this background that he pictures a tremendously drastic fall of the monarch as well as other accompanying circumstances. It can be observed that the evaluation of the king was not univocal at first, which is moreover substantiated by the oldest written source connected with this event – Gallus Anonymous’ chronicle which came into existence 30 years later. Initially, the faults and reasons were proportionate. However, the emerging legend of saint Stanislaus, as the text shows, keeps distorting and dehumanizing the monarch making him into a thoughtless, heinous hothead who dared to raise his hand at the world of values represented by the bishop. In a considerable measure it is the upshot of interpretations imposed by 13th century standards. The paper draws on research by renowned experts in the field such as Marian Plezia and Tomasz Grudziński. They were trying to recapitulate and introduce order onto our knowledge of this crucial episode in our history, thoroughly analyzing all available written and iconographic sources as well as debris of potential oral traditions.

Opis:
Autism is one of the most mysterious human disorders ever known. Although existing since the dawn of humanity, it was only in 1943 that science took up this subject. Before, undiscovered and unnamed, it was considered merely a legend, and the only existing records were those of a few pioneer case studies. With his discoveries, Leo Kanner, the first person to properly define autism, marked the beginning of a struggle to describe the disorder using scientific language. Unfortunately, the attempts were not always successful. Autism, as described by contemporary science, is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Theories claiming its psychogenic aetiology can no longer be sustained. The history of research concerning autism points to a phenomenon known as collective thinking – a term coined by Ludwik Fleck, as well as to the process of the emergence of a scientific myth. It is a study of how researchers’ presuppositions can shape social beliefs, and at the same time how constructing scientific theories is inherently ingrained in the cognitive style of an era. The second half of the 20th century marks the beginning of a gradual change in the classification of autism. The perception of the nature of this disorder shifted from psychogenic theories to organic aetiologies. It is the voice of the enormously talented and creative individuals with high-functioning autism that triggered a breakthrough in the research - a voice that was ignored until the 1980s.

Opis:
The article The function of a crypto-quotation on the basis of the picture of “Quod est veritas. Christ and Pilate” by M. Ge and “The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor” by F. Dostoyevsky aims at highlighting the relations between the analysed phenomena found both in the picture of Ge and in the legend. It reveals the mutual correspondence between the picture and the legend. To make such comparison possible, the author holds a view that methodological assumptions of the so called art correspondence and semiosphere may become sub-codes, which allow mutual influence and explanation of one sign by the others. Common ground for the two texts (the picture and the legend) may be a dialogue and a mythical approach. From the analysis, the author comes to a conclusion that the crypto-quotation (a hidden quotation) may be perceived as the polyphony of the word and the picture, which, to a certain extent, can be associated with Bakhtin's theory of the polyphony of the word in Dostoyevsky's novels.

The article analyzes the creation of Romuald Traugutt in the fantasy novel by Konrad T. Lewandowski, published on the 150th anniversary of the January Uprising, which implements the model of alternative history in the steampunk convention. Lewandowski continues the golden legend of Traugutt – a martyr of the national case, which has been evolving since the day the National Government was executed, and grounded in belleslettres by E. Orzeszkowa. A novelty proposed by the writer is an alternative reality in which the January insurgents defeated Russia thanks to the technical miracle, specific tanks invented by I. Łukasiewicz. Traugutt in this reality does not die, he becomes the Chief of State; just like the real prototype, he is a good soldier and a man of deep faith. Lewandowski emphasizes the hero's patriotism and heroism when he voluntarily agrees to die for his homeland.

The objective of this article is to consider legends or oral narratives in Norway which deal with the Chudes. Who were the Chudes - an important nation acting in a particular historical context or a mythological image? In order to answer this question it is necessary to examine different references to the Chudes preserved in Norwegian legends and historical sources. Here I consider the following tasks: 1) to clarify the meaning of the word ‘Chude’ in Norwegian culture; 2) to analyze legends about the Chudes in order to pick out the main plot-constructing elements. Legends are narratives which claim to be true and are usually connected to well-known places and people. Migrating legends are narratives which have been narrated in many places and for a long period of time. This also concerns legends narrating about the Chudes. This article discusses the effect on the percentage of truth in the narratives. For fifteen years I have taken the lead in doing research work at UiT (The Arctic University of Norway), the Institute of Teacher Education and Pedagogy, where my students and I collected several hundred legends, mainly from Northern Norway. The reason why pedagogy students were involved in this work is that legends can be applied as a method of knowledge development. It will be helpful when the students become trained teachers and face their own pupils at primary and lower secondary schools. Interest in legends can strengthen skills and content awareness, being at the same time a gateway to establishing knowledge structures.

Opis:
This paper discusses the concept of the hero and the role of memory as an object of (re)construction of the world in the narrative of the Nintendo digital game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Through the analysis of how memory is reconstructed in Link and the characters that inhabit Hyrule, memories, historical and social memory, monuments, documents, space, and gameplay within the same digital game are also reconstructed. Testimonial memory, in turn, will help remember and construct the narrative of Link’s personal and social history by reconstructing the story. The personal experience that the player has while interacting with the game through the act of playing can build the metadiscourse between memory and narrative to understand the hero and his journey through the world. In this sense, the importance of the character Link within the game is affirmed, as he is a much more complex subject than a simple archetype within the game mechanics.
