Opis:
In this work, gel-casting of foams method was used to produce ZrO2 porous ceramics. The obtained foams with total porosity of 89.5 vol% were composed of approximately spherical cells having the mean diameter of 537 ± 153 μm interconnected by circular cell windows having the mean diameter of 152 ± 82 μm. Next, the ZrO2 foams were coated with fluorapatite (FA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) layers by slurry infiltration. The intermediate fluorapatite (FA) layer was introduced to prevent the chemical reactions between ZrO2 and HA at high temperatures during sintering process. The ZrO2 samples containing only HA coatings, were also tested, for comparison. The obtained ceramic biomaterials were subjected to in vitro tests in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The results show that the ZrO2 foams with FA/HA layers possessed better bioactivity than the foams with the HA/HA coating.

W pracy zbadano wpływ płatków grafenowych na właściwości mechaniczne kompozytu o zawartości wagowej 20% Al2O3 - 80% ZrO2 (stab. 3% mol. Y2O3). Do otrzymania próbek użyto handlowy proszek ceramiczny firmy Tosoh, tlenek grafenu (GO) otrzymany w ITME oraz grafen firmy SkySpring Nanomaterials Inc. (GN). Kompozyty otrzymano na bazie wodnych (GO) i alkoholowych (GN) mieszanin obu składników, które po wysuszeniu spiekano w piecu Astro pod jednoosiowym ciśnieniem i metodą SPS. Wykonano kompozyty o zawartości wagowej: 0; 0,1; 0,2; 0,5; 1 i 3% GO oraz 0,1% GN. Spektroskopia Ramana wykazała obecność grafenu. Stwierdzono, że w funkcji zawartości GO oraz GN: odporność na pękanie ma maksimum dla zawartości 0,1% GO i GN, wytrzymałość maleje, moduł Younga oraz twardość Vickersa utrzymują się stałe do zawartości 0,5% GO, a następnie maleją.
This research addresses the effect of graphene flakes on the mechanical properties of the composite containing 20 wt. % Al2O3 and 80 wt. % ZrO2 (stab. 3 mol. % Y2O3). The samples were made from a commercial ceramic powder produced by Tosoh, graphene oxide (GO) from ITME and graphene purchased from Skyspring Nanomaterials Inc. (GN). The obtained composites based on an aqueous (GO) and alcohol (GN) mixtures of both components were first dried and then sintered under an uniaxial pressure in an Astro furnace and in a SPS machine. The composites weight content equaled to: 0; 0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1 and 3% of GO and 0.1% GN. Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of graphene. It was found that as a function of the GO and GN content, the fracture toughness has a maximum for 0.1% GO and GN, the strength decreases, the Young's modulus and Vickers hardness remain constant up to 0.5% GO, and then decrease.

Opis:
The paper presents mechanical and tribological properties of Al2O3/ZrO2 composite sinters with different proportions of Al2O3 and ZrO2 phases. These materials are commonly used in dry friction contact due to relatively low manufacturing costs of even complex shapes of products and the possibility of working at elevated temperatures. The tests were carried out by the ball-on-disc method at temperatures of 20, 150, 300, and 500°C. A ball made of Al2O3 was used as a counterpart. The results were compared with the following sintered mono-phase materials: Al2O3 (alumina) and tetragonal yttria-stabilized ZrO2 polycrystallines (Y-TZP). The tests showed the significantly better properties of composite materials.
W pracy przedstawiono właściwości mechaniczne i tribologiczne spieków kompozytowych Al2O3/ZrO2 o różnej proporcji faz Al2O3  i ZrO2. Wyniki badań porównywano z wynikami badań spieków wytwarzanych z materiałów jednofazowych: α- Al2O3  (korund) i tetragonalnych polikryształów ZrO2  stabilizowanych tlenkiem itru (tzw. Y-TZP). Badania wykazały znacząco lepsze własności materiałów kompozytowych.

Opis:
In this work the microstructure analysis of composite from ZrO2 – Ti system were presented. For the preparation of the composite samples nanometric ZrO2 powder stabilized by 3 mol% of Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. The composites with 10 vol.% addition of titanium particles were prepared by slip casting method. The sintering process was conducted at 1450°C with 2 hours’ dwell time, in the inert atmosphere of argon. The microstructure observations were carried out with the use of SEM and STEM microscopes. The quantitative analysis and stereological characterization were performed. The SEM and STEM observations allowed characterizing the microstructure of composite samples. Especially, the interface between titanium particles and zirconia matrix was described. The growth of the zirconia grains around the Ti rich areas was observed. The increase of the zirconia grains size results from the reaction on the interface between titanium particle and zirconia matrix during the sintering process.

Opis:
In the present work, photoluminescence and Doppler broadening depth-resolved positron annihilation spectroscopy was performed on pure zirconia nanopowders. Zirconia nanopowders were grown by a hydrothermal microwave-driven process followed by annealing in oxygen atmosphere. Photoluminescence under 274 nm wavelength excitation from a 150 W high-pressure Xe exhibits similar spectra, in the region from 320 to 820 nm, although its intensity depends on the annealing. Positron annihilation Doppler-broadening spectra show low values of the normalized S-parameter, varying little with the depth, from 0.495 on the surface to 0.47-0.49 in bulk. Both high the annealing temperature and oxygen concentrations, lead to low bulk S-values. The ortho-positronium (o-Ps) fraction is about 10-11% for all samples on the surface, whereas it is reduced to 7-8% in the bulk for samples annealed at 700°C and 5-6% for samples annealed at 800°C. Both photoluminescence (PL) and positron studies show the presence of defects in all samples. The o-Ps signal suggests a high porosity of samples, particularly at a depth down to 10 nm.

Hydrous zirconia particles of nanometric dimensions were synthesized via forced hydrolysis of zirconyl chloride. Prolonged aging at 100°C in the mother liquor and subsequent calcination produced a single-phase tetragonal ZrO2 of enhanced thermal stability with the narrow size and pore distributions. The influence of the preparation conditions on the phase composition of the resultant zirconium dioxide was examined using structural (XRD, SEM/TEM) and spectroscopic (Raman) methods, supported by thermal analysis (DTA/TG, DSC) and N2-porosimetry. The nature of the parent salt, pH of the solution, the temperature of precipitation and aging, were found to be the key parameters of the successful synthesis. The sequence of mechanistic steps invoked to account for the formation of t-ZrO2 was rationalized using the concepts of zirconium aquatic chemistry.

The antibacterial activity of a PVP-ZrO2 nanocomposite was investigated against pathogenic bacteria S. aureus and K. pneumoniae after antibacterial sensitivity was determined and one isolate was chosen that showed more antibiotic resistance. Herein, the Co-culture technique was used to calculate percent reduction of bacteria. The results that were obtained in this method show that ZrO2 nanoparticles have inhibitory effect against pathogenic bacteria gram negative bacteria and gram positive bacteria - with reduction of growth reaching 100% to both S. aureus and K. pnumoniae at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% ZrO2, compared with control. The resistance patterns of S. aureus and K.pnuemonia isolates show the Moxifloxacin (MXF) is the best antibiotic for both bacteria - with sensitivity at 100%, while resistance to Ceftriaxone (CRO) is at 90% S. aureus, and at 80% K. pnumoniae. The polymer-nanocomposite was prepared by weight percentage wt. % of (PVP) being dissolved in (10) ml of distilled water, with weight percentages 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% of ZrO2 nanoparticles added.

In tins study, ingot metallurgy and powder metallurgy processes were used to incorporate 0.2 and 0.7 vol% of nano-size ZrO2 particles reinforcement to develop magnesium nanocomposite. Both of the processing methods led to reasonably fair reinforcement distribution, substantial gram refinement and minimum porosity in the nanocomposites. Strengthening effect of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement in the magnesium matrix was greater when incorporated using the ingot metallurgy process. The matrix ductility and resistance to fracture were significantly improved due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement when incorporated using the powder metallurgy process. Tensile fracture surfaces revealed that the less-ductile cleavage fracture mechanism of hexagonal close packed magnesium matrix has changed to more ductile mode due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 particles in all the processed nanocomposites.

Opis:
Slip casting is one of the most popular shaping method in ceramic technology which allows producing a large number of elements in small period of time. This shaping technique gives a possibility to fabricate ceramic or composite materials such as ZrO2-Ti. Ti with its properties (low density, high melting point, high-temperature strength, good corrosion resistance and others) combine with ZrO2 (high flexure strength, high compression resistance and very high KIC) can be considered for different applications as constructional and functional materials. For the preparation of such composite nanometric zirconium oxide powder stabilized by 3 mol% Y2O3 and micrometric titanium powder were used. Water-based slurries with 35, 40, 45 and 50 vol.% solid phase content were prepared with 3, 10 and 15 vol.% addition of titanium powder. Zeta potential and pH of prepared slurries were considered. The pH changes were tested as a function of Ti content. The viscosity of the prepared slurries was measured. The sedimentation tests for selected slurries were performed. The casting rate for slurry of 35% solid phase with 10 vol.% Ti was examined. These measurements showed good stability of slurries. With the increasing of the solid phase concentration the density of the green bodies increased. However, the increase of the content of Ti powder reduced the density of green body samples. For selected samples the SEM observations was carried out. Composites produced by slip casting were characterized by a homogenous distribution of Ti particles in the ZrO2 matrix.

The thermal expansion of a ZrO2-20 mol% Gd2O3 pellet has been systematically investigated using a thermo-mechanical analyzer in the temperature range of 293-1773 K. Variations in the thermal expansion coefficient and density upon temperature change were calculated using the thermal expansion data. The average linear thermal expansion coefficient of theZrO2-20 mol% Gd2O3 pellet was found to be 9.522 × 10-6 K-1 in the range of 298-1073 K. This value is smaller than that of ZrO2 and larger than that of Gd2O3. Further, with an increase in temperature to 1773 K, the density of ZrO2-20 mol% Gd2O3 pellet was found to decrease to 94.98 % of the initial density at 293 K.

Oxide ZrO2-CaO plasma-sprayed coatings were remelted using the modified gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) method. The original two-burner set, generating a free independent arc, was used in the treatment. The samples were subjected to structural examination using light and scanning electron microscopes, and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). A substantial heterogeneity of the plasma-sprayed coatings was found, observable with a laminar structure, significant porosity, and step change in the concentration of the elements. Significant changes in the structure were found after the remelting treatment. Both microscopic and EDX investigations showed that the treatment leads to a reduction in the heterogeneity of the chemical composition of the coating material and to a loss of structural characteristics typical for plasma-sprayed coatings.

Zirconia matrix ZrO2/CNT composite materials reinforced with multiwall carbon nanotubes were fabricated using a spark plasma sintering technique. The effects of the amount of CNTs addition, sintering temperature and sintering pressure on the properties of the resulting ZrO2/CNT composites were examined. 0 to 9 vol. % CNTs were dispersed in zirconia powder, and the resulting mixture was sintered. The electrical conductivity, hardness, flexural strength, and density were measured to characterize the composites. The friction and wear properties of the composites were also tested. The flexural strength and friction coefficient of the composites were improved with up to 6 vol.% of CNT addition and the flexural strength showed a close relationship with the relative density of the composite. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing proportion of the CNTs, but the efficiency was reduced at more than 6 vol.% CNTs.
