    The article summarizes the history of the academic reflection on the culture research in Czech Republic from the beginnings of the národopis in the late 19th century till contemporary reflection on culture under the brand of anthropology. It covers the difficulties with defining the field of the research as well as the discipline name problem. The plurality of disciplines we can now observe in Czech cultural studies is explained in context of the social and political circumstances, especially the belonging to the soviet universum after the 2nd World War. Finally the article tries to explain the great difficulty with application of the Western, especially British, cultural studies into the postcommunist intellectual milieu.

    The article is devoted to the signed narratives created by the deaf communities and presents the attempt of genology of sign narratives they are divided into: deaf-lore (storytelling), cinematographic stories, signed songs and stories with constraints (e.g. ABC or number stories). The main corpus of artwork described and analyzed in the article is signed in American Sign Language, but author tried to take into consideration Polish Sign Language works as well. Apart from the genres and types of the signed narratives author tries to place them in a broader context. Most important is the doubt whether deaf narratives may be considered literature at all, as they do not use words and letters in traditional way. The influence of the moving picture technology is also considered as a powerful boost to the signed narratives.

    Netnography, webnography, cyberanthropology, online and virtual ethnography – new labels and academic brands are mushrooming on the ground of the anthropology within the last two decades. They reflect the growth and diversity of the new media phenomena and platforms but also serve as a PR tool for making anthropology seem modern and up-to-date. Can we actually pronounce the new paradigm/turn within the anthropology/ethnography when transferring them online? I wonder whether the binary opposition between the real and the virtual in which anthropology seems to be caught brings epistemological benefits, what is the source of this digital dualism and finally why the digital- and cyber- prefixes do more harm that benefit anthropology.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony unikatowej kolekcji pierwszych filmów ukazujących i wykorzystujących język migowy, zrealizowanych w latach 1910-1921 przez amerykańskie Narodowe Stowarzyszenie Głuchych (NAD). Po ogólnokrajowej zbiórce środków finansowych w 1909 r. został powołany w NAD Fundusz Filmowy oraz zarządzająca nim Komisja Filmowa. Autorka tekstu umiejscawia filmową kolekcję w szerszym kontekście i skupia się na czterech filmach, opisując ich wpływ na ówczesnych głuchych, konstruowanie konwencji filmowania miganych narracji oraz znaczenie dla dzisiejszych badaczy głuchej kultury. Konteksty, jak również relacje dotyczące produkcji filmów, ich recepcji oraz mechanizmów dystrybucji zostały zrekonstruowane na podstawie badań archiwalnych przeprowadzonych w archiwum Uniwersytetu Gallaudeta (Waszyngton, USA), gdzie zdeponowana jest sama kolekcja filmowa, jak i dokumenty jej dotyczące.
    The article is devoted to the unique collection of first films showing and using sign language, made in the years 1910-1921 by the American National Association of the Deaf (NAD). After a nationwide collection of funds in 1909 a NAD Film Fund was created and the Film Commission that governed it. The author of the article places the film collection in a broader context and focuses on four films, describing their impact on contemporary deaf people, constructing the convention of filming signed narration and its meaning for today’s researchers of the deaf culture. The context of making of the films, as well as their reception and distribution mechanisms are reconstructed based on archival research conducted in the archives of Gallaudet University (Washington, USA), where the films as well as related documents are deposited.

    Assistive technologies are solutions designed to improve everyday functioning of people with disabilities. However, critical analysis of this concept may lead to surprising conclusions. If under the term of assistive technologies we understand solutions that support everyday functioning of human body and mind, it turns out that in fact every technology could be considered to be assistive in one way or another. Nevertheless, commonly used technologies are identified as assistive only when they are intended for users with disabilities. This indicates how ambiguous this concept is and that assistive technology (just like disability) is in fact a social and cultural construct.

    From the perspective of the deaf, the silent movie era was the golden age of cinema. The emergence of a sound film cut the deaf audiences away from cinematic entertainment, but they made attempts to regain it despite new circumstances. One way to share sound films was with title cards “like in a silent movie”, which were used by an American deaf former actor, Emerson Romero, whose Hollywood career was interrupted by film soundtracking. Based on the concept of media/technology ecology and the example of title cards prepared by Romero, I put forward the thesis that in the new technological environment, outdated solutions generate new cultural and social practices, gain new users, meanings, and values. This happens regardless of their actual effectiveness, as exemplified by Romero’s cards. Even though the films made available with their help were not very popular with deaf audiences, in retrospect, they have been considered the seeds of the deaf audiences’ victory in the fight for full participation in audiovisual culture.

    „Lista (nie)obecności. Niepełnosprawność w podręcznikach szkolnych” to pierwszy w Polsce projekt badawczy, realizowany w nurcie studiów o niepełnosprawności w wymiarach: opisowym, normotwórczym i rzeczniczym oraz dotyczący problematyki: niepełnosprawności, edukacji, systemu edukacji, kultury, w tym także polityki kulturalnej, różnorodności społecznej i kulturowej. Ilościowej i jakościowej analizie (także wizualnej) poddano 75 podręczników dobranych losowo w sposób warstwowo-proporcjonalny. Opisano i zinterpretowano częstości występowania pojęć „niepełnosprawność” i „osoba z niepełnosprawnością”, sposoby ich przedstawiania, nazewnictwo. Uwzględniono perspektywę prawoczłowieczego modelu niepełnosprawności.
