Opis:
In the article Robert K. Zawadzki relates how Wawrzyniec Korwin, a little – known Old – Polish writer described the Iberian peninsula in his astronomical treatise Cosmographia dans manuductionem in tabulas Ptolemaei. This author produced a specific picture of Spain that shared affinity with the Roman and Greek writers’ literary manner of writing about this country. The ancient literature had tended to see Spain as a land of prosperity and a district in which gold could be found as a mineral in the rivers. Korwin adopted this view of Spain. A separate section of Spanish threads in his dissertation are the Roman writers from the Iberian peninsula. The Polish author evokes the figure of Seneca and Lucan to quote fragments of the most important works of these writers. Bringing together Korwin’s remarks and ancient texts which he uses, RKZ demonstrates that the Korwin’s description of Spain although seen by some as an anachronism achieved its aim, it persuaded audiences of the magnificence of Spain.

Opis:
The article offers insights on the reception and literary transmission of the religious and biblical threads running through the astronomical treatise Introductorium compendiosum in Tractatum sphaerae materialis Ioannis de Sacrobusto of Jan of Głogów. As a narrative and historical book, the Bible offered a broad market for tales in both oral and written form and apocryphal works of fiction, which were adopted and adapted in Jan’s dissertation in order to meet the scientific tasks and expectations of young listeners, thus making the practical realization of the scholastic educational standards and needs. Among others, the article examines in Jan’s treatise popular biblical tales, such as Adam and Eve, Moses, Noah, Abraham, and Jerusalem and the Hell together with their geographical and astronomical features. The history of Pontius Pilatus is also discussed with his alleged German descent. This combination of such disparate narrative and research material shows both the wealth of Jan’s storytelling and his ability to teach astronomy.

The article is devoted to the Latin poem De spledidissimo Christi Jesu triumpho carmen by Martin Kromer who was one of the biggest writers of the Polish Renaissance. A theme of the work is time when Jesus Christ became alive again three days after his death. The theme are also miraculous events which took place after his Resurrection. The poet is supplementing records of the Gospel, introducing into his poem the action which isn’t complicated. He is talking about guards who stood by the grave. He is also describing the reaction of the nature which expressed its sadness because of the death of the Saviour. In the context of the report on the Resurrection, the poet is referring to the figures of ancient world belonging both to mythology, as well to history. In his artistic work Kromer isn’t presenting typical Apocrypha, he proposes a different perspective, having only character of the Apocrypha.

Opis:
The article first gives a short presentation of Angelus Silesius (1624-1677) or, Johannes Scheffler, and then more thoroughly analyses the first part of his work entitled Idea causarum fundatarum, transeundi a Lutheranis ad Ecclesiam Catholicam; comprehensarum Illationibus duabus which has been forgotten today. The baroque writer used exclusively brief statements which confirm the truth of the Roman faith and simultaneously debunk arguments in favor of Protestant religion. Above all his work was supposed to provide polemical ammunition for the supporters of the Roman Catholic Church and to justify discontinuing relations with Protestantism. In order to achieve this purpose, the writer enumerated and discussed arguments related to the most important arguable theological issues, such as the apostolic succession, miracles, attitude to God’s Word, religious life, celibacy, the figure of Luther and his adherents, etc.

The article offers a survey of the reception of Ovid in the Wawrzyniec Korwin’s astronomical dissertation Cosmographia dans manuductionem in tabulas Ptolemaei (ed. 1496) by applying literary perspectives of such Ovid`s poems as Metamorphoses, Fasti, Epistulae ex Ponto, Amores and Heroides. The title Korwin’s take on Ovid hints at the actual and real potential of his heritage that is both a fixed, poetic base shared by Korwin since his study at the Cracow Academy as well as a body of references constantly being reinterpreted in response to astronomical and geographical challenges of the work of the Polish writer. The reader is given an insight into the processes shaping Korwin’s borrowings from Ovid and the importance of Cosmographia to the Polish Renaissance culture.

The article is an attempt of interpretation of seven poems written by Wawrzyniec Korwin which were inserted in St. Bonaventura`s homilies and constitute forms of prayers to be said daily by Christians. The author analyses the artistic skill of the language used by the poet. His poems keep fascinating their readers because of their language, i.e. style as a system of remarkable pattern of linguistic elements and ancient metre.

Opis:
In his 1534 Latin poem on the illness of the Polish King Sigismundus I that was a consequence of his hunting expedition, Marcin Kromer introduces the myth of Cephalus and Procris. Borrowing the subject from Ovid (Met. VII 690-862), Kromer presents only the last part of the history of this unhappy couple and does not dwell on the husband's and wife's emotions as much as his predecessor. This passage seems important as we see here the first use of this myth by a Polish author.

Opis:
This article is a broad and detailed discussion of the complex harmonic issues of Karol Szy- manowski’s Mazurkas Op. 50. It outlines the current state of research on the harmony of the Mazurkas, beginning with the work by Adolf Chybiński (1920s), through the monograph by Stefania Łobaczewska (1950s) (now obsolete), studies by Józef M. Chomiński, articles by Zofia Helman, Antoni Poszowski, and Piotr Dahlig, the monograph of the twentieth century Polish mazurka by Anna Nowak, the great biography of Szymanowski written by Teresa Chylińska and, above all, the classic works by Tadeusz Andrzej Zielinski, fundamental to the issue of the mazurka harmony, the only ones so attentive and so focussed on the detail, and yet formulating such an appropriate and clear conceptual apparatus. The results of Zieliński’s research and analyses make an obvious starting point for contemporary music theorists interested in the issue of harmony throughout the twentieth century. Capturing and naming the entire complex of phenomena encountered in the Mazurkas Op. 50 is not easy. Mazurkas Op. 50 are characterized by a vast variety of har- monic phenomena, innovative treatment of the piano texture and the use of various sound effects stylising the folk music of the Polish Highlands. Moreover, the ways in which the music material is organised often blend with one another or coexist in the course of the piece within the intersect- ing old and new rules (harmonic eclecticism). The article examines a broad spectrum of har- monic phenomena, proposed by Zielinski, occurring in Opus 50. These are: relics of function harmony system, the interaction of the so-called non-function thirds harmony and the ‘sound spot’ technique, tinting chords with dissonances, using multi-tonal saturated chords, percussive use of half-step intervals, using the fourth structures, emancipation of dissonant intervals, various types of ostinato and burdon formulas, repeated chord complexes, the bimodal phenomena, the double- and multilayer harmonic complexes, the parallel intervals and chords, the bitonal co-occurrences of bass fifths and triads. The article gives examples of all the phenomena, but only the selected ones were fully discussed, focusing on other issues: the types of dual melodic lines, formula of half- and whole-step movement between chords, monophonic fragments or the whole tone scale order. The horizontal scale orders were not discussed, unless it was necessary for the understanding of the harmonic issues in question.

The article offers insights on the reception and cultural transmission of one of the most important Renaissance texts entitled De Europa written by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, an Italian scholar (he became Pope Pius II in 1458). His work was adopted and adapted by the Polish scholar Jan of Stobnica. In his dissertation Introductio in Ptolemaei cosmographiam cum longitudinibus et latitudinibus regionum et civitatum celebriorum, he took up all issues of Piccolomini`s treatise, including geographical and historical aspects of Greece. His attitude to this material was very positive. The article considers the motifs of Greek districts, such as Macedonia, Thessaly, Boeotia, Attica, the Peloponnese, the Isthmus, Achaea, Acarnania, Epirus, and the significance of Greece for Polish Renaissance culture.

Arranged by topics, the essay covers the early sixteenth – century "Introductorium compendiosum in Tractatum sphaerae materialis Ioannis de Sacrobusto" written in Latin by the Polish scholar Jan of Głogów. The essay explores diverse aspects of his deliberations about the eclipse of the sun which was said to happen during the time of Christ’s death. In Jan`s opinion which was based on astronomical knowledge and ancient writers` judgments, the blocking of the light of the sun when the moon was between it and the earth, was a miraculous event which did not follow the known physical laws of nature and was therefore thought to be caused by God.
