Opis:
The aim of the research paper was to identify the relationship between a chronic cardiac disease and heart transplantation, and the level of patients’ selfcare. The notion of self-care and its levels has been defined, and the circumstances in which it becomes activate specified. Research findings showed that there is no difference in the level of self-care between the group of patients with a chronic heart condition and the group of patients with a heart transplant, and between cardiac patients and healthy individuals. The difference showed in the higher global level of self-care in patients after heart transplantation compared to healthy individuals. The research revealed that a heart transplantation treatment has a direct effect on the scope of self-care in patients. It can therefore be concluded that in the context of changes following a cardiac transplantation, self-care is activated as a buffering mechanism, facilitating a better adaptation of a patient. Yet, it cannot be stated that self-care is a rational mechanism consciously used in order to cope with the situation.

Thesis. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders resulting from damage to the central nervous system in the early stages of its development. The aim of the rehabilitation of persons with CP is to make their dependence on the assistance of others as little as possible and to improve their quality of life, as well as the quality of life of their families. New methods are developed in which new technologies are employed and a holistic approach to the patient, requiring the cooperation of specialists in various fields, is assumed.             The most commonly used methods of working with children with cerebral palsy include the NDT-Bobath method and the Vojta method. Apart from them unconventional methods are also employed, including hippotherapy, virtual reality, the sensory integration method, the conductive education method, and the space suit method. Aim of the paper. The aim of the paper is to present the methods employed in increasing the agility of children with cerebral palsy. Focus has been placed on traditional and commonly used methods, as well as the unconventional methods which are currently undergoing evaluation. Results. Thanks to diversifying rehabilitation with new methods and enriching it with the experience of specialists in areas outside medicine patients with cerebral palsy are able to fully benefit from their own potential. Quality of life is improved, independence is increased, and new opportunities are discovered. Some of the newest methods may serve to supplement traditional therapies, others can substitute for them in the future. What is crucial is to focus not only on heightening the physical agility of the patients, but also to make the course of the therapy more attractive, and to work on improving the patients’ functioning in other areas of life, as well, such as social contacts or hobbies.

Opis:
The paper discusses a study whose aim was to examine the impact of attention to language form and task type on the realisation of English function words by Polish learners of English. An additional goal was to investigate whether style-induced pronunciation shifts may depend on the degree of foreign accent. A large part of the paper concentrates on the issue of defining ‘weakness’ in English weak forms and considers priorities in English pronunciation teaching as far as the realisation of function words is concerned. The participants in the study were 12 advanced Polish learners of English, who were divided into two groups: 6 who were judged to speak with a slight degree of foreign accent and 6 who were judged to speak with a high degree of foreign accent. The subjects’ pronunciation was analysed in three situations in which we assume their attention was increasingly paid to speech form (spontaneous speech, prepared speech, reading). The results of the study suggest that increased attention to language form caused the participants to realise more function words as unstressed, although the effect was small. It was also found that one of the characteristics of English weak forms, the lack of stress, was realised correctly by the participants in the majority of cases. Finally, the results of the study imply that, in the case under investigation, the effect of attention to language form is weakly or not at all related to the degree of foreign accent.

Opis:
Zinc is a naturally wide spread element, which generally finds its use in industry but also in numerous pharmaceutical, cosmetic and stomatology materials. Taking into consideration its frequent occurrence (in almost all biological materials) and its low quantities, a good choice of analytical method for zinc assay is a necessity. Apart from spectrophotometric methods – especially AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry) which is a method of choice for zinc determination, also electroanalytical methods are used. Most frequently ASV (Anodic Stripping Voltammetry) or Polarography is applied. Despite the need of samples digestion electrochemical methods offer a price convenient method for determination of zinc, even in trace amounts (ppt – parts per trillion). Currently there is also new information about ion selective electrodes suitable for zinc assay.

The presented article contains the results of macroscopic analysis of plant remains (fruit, seeds and wood), deposited on the site of the Tarnobrzeg group of the Lusatian culture in Grabowiec, site 1/50/105-85 AZP, commune Radymno. All the discussed pieces remained in a burnt condition. They represented few residues of Einkorn wheat cereals Triticum monococcum, spelt Triticum spelta and proso millet Panicum miliaceum. In the group of wild herbal species there was recorded the presence of plants related today with arable fields (Bromus secalinus, Thlaspi arvense and Galium spurium) or field and ruderal habitats (Chenopodium album). The most strongly represented were the remains of trees and shrubs. On their basis Carpinus betulus, Fraxinus excelsior, Pinus sylvestris, Acer, Alnus, Betula, Quercus and Ulmus were marked. The composition of the anthracologic spectrum suggests that in the neighbourhood of the site forests in the type of today’s broadleaved forest developed (oak, hornbeam involving maple and lime) and riparian forests (ash and alder).

Opis:
This paper reports the results of a pilot study concerned with phonetic imitation in the speech of Polish learners of English. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether native speakers of Polish imitate the length of English vowels and to determine whether the extent of phonetic imitation may be influenced by the model talker being a native or a non-native speaker of English. The participants were asked to perform an auditory naming task in which they indentified objects and actions presented on a set of photos twice, with and without the imitation task. The imitation task was further sub-divided depending on the model talker being a native or non-native speaker of English (a native Southern British English speaker and a native Polish speaker fluent in English). As the aim was to investigate the variability in durational characteristics of English vowels, the series of front vowels /æ e ɪ iː/ were analysed in the shortening and lengthening b_t vs. b_d contexts. The results of the study show that the participants imitated the length of the investigated vowels as a result of exposure to the two model talkers. The data suggest that the degree of imitation was mediated both by linguistic and social factors and that the direction of convergence might have been affected by the participants’ attitude toward L2 pronunciation.

Opis:
Aim. The aim of the paper is to present the reasons of the forming of erroneous, unfavourable perception of persons with spinocerebellar ataxia. Concept. Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are a group of degenerative disorders leading to damage of the cerebellum and its connections (Klockgether, Paulson, 2011). The following are distinguished among the neurological speech difficulties present in persons with SCA: dysphagia (difficulties with swallowing leading to problems with eating), speech disorders, and mental disorders. Each of these groups of disorders may lead to the stigmatisation of persons with SCA. Such persons might be seen as sloppy and helpless, and the specificity of speech impairments and uncoordinated movements as well as their irregular gait may cause these persons to be perceived as inebriated. Such presumptions lead to difficulties in social functioning and may be the cause of discrimination, including the denial of help. Conclusion: What is helpful in combating prejudice is, first and foremost, the dissemination of knowledge about the condition, including launching social campaigns presenting the labelled symptoms of SCA. What is more, work with the patient ought to be focused on the development of coping strategies in the social environment rather than alleviating physical difficulties exclusively.

Program terapii zakładał poprawę jakościowych i ilościowych aspektów mowy (przez poprawę m.in. praksji, aktywności werbalnej, artykulacji, fluencji słownej, pamięci). Wykorzystanie odpowiednich metod i narzędzi pracy w przypadku pacjentki z afazją mieszaną przyniosło zamierzone efekty. Należy podejmować pracę z pacjentem jak najwcześniej od wystąpienia zaburzeń oraz dbać o stan psychiczny chorego, który odgrywa ogromną rolę w poprawie stanu mowy.
Aphasia is a consequence of a damage of particular brain structure which causes partial or total disorder of mechanisms promoting human speech activities. The research was held on a 30 years old woman with a mixed aphasia after a brain injury. The aim of this thesis is to introduce and elaborate the diagnosis and therapy of the patient with a mixed aphasia with a dominance of a motoric aphasia and to indicate the areas that should be taken into a speech therapy. The programme of a therapy assumed the progress in a quantity and quality aspects of speech (through improvement inter alia praxia, verbal activity, articulation, words fluency, memory). The meetings were held two times a week for 30 minutes during ten months. The therapy redounded to the improvement of sentence creation fluency and confering them a right grammatical form. The patient is more verbal active, the articulation is closer to the standard, the memory is better. Using of the right methods and tools of work in a case of a patient with a mixed aphasia brought the expected effects. What should be done is work with a patient from the very beginning after disorder appearing. It is important to take care of a mential condition which is extremaly important in speech level improvement.

Introduction: Resistance towing is perhaps the most specific form of developing strength and power in muscles involved directly during the start, acceleration and at maximum speed. Resisted sprint training may involve towing a sled which provides an overload through the friction between the sled and ground surface or a modern advanced training device which uses drag technology to provide fully controlled resistance during the movement, such as the 1080 Sprint. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the optimal loading for the development of power in the engine assisted drag technology system SPRINT 1080. Material and methods: We evaluated the changes in running velocity and the generated force and power during resisted sprints over 30m with a load of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 kg. Seven male sprinters with national and international experience participated in the study. Their average age, body mass and body height were 22.2 ± 2.4 years, 77.43 ± 4.63 kg, and 178.6 ± 3.2 cm, respectively. All athletes performed six 30 m sprints with 5 min rest intervals in between. The first sprint was performed without additional resistance, while the remaining 5 were performed in an random order with additional resistance of 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 kg. After receiving a verbal signal, the participant started at will from a semi crouched position. During the resisted sprint trials, the time [s] and the following variables were recorded in peak values: power output [W], generated force [N], and sprinting velocity [m/s]. Results: Our results show that loading with 6 kg decreased sprinting velocity by 9.37% while the generated horizontal power increased by 31,32%. The 6 kg loading on the Sprint 1080device corresponded to 8% body mass, yet as mentioned before the baseline results were not fully free sprinting as the tested athletes reached velocities 0.5-0.6 m/s greater without the harness. Conclusion: Taking into account this fact, our results seem to confirm previous findings, that external loads between 8 and 13% may be optimal for improving power and sprinting speed at the same time.

Opis:
Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are defined as belief of the decline of a cognitive condition compared with an earlier period of functioning. Many studies have shown the relationship between SCCs with objective neuropsychological results as well its dependency on psychological characteristics. Considering the complex nature of SCCs, this study tested the relationship between SCCs reported in the attention domain with the results obtained in neuropsychological attention tasks, as well as with psychological cha racteristics and among complaints reported in various domains of functioning. Sixty participants over 60 years of age took part in the study. Subjects were tested for the intensity of SCCs in everyday func tioning, psychological characteristics (mood; anxiety, state and trait; and personality traits) and various aspects of attention domain (switching, divided, and focus). The SCC intensity reported in various areas of functioning was associated with each other as well as with psychological characteristics (personality traits, anxiety, and mood/depression). There were no significant relations between the SCC intensity reported in the attention domain and the outcomes obtained in neuropsychological attention tasks. Our results showed that the intensity of SCCs may be a result of subjects’ psychological characteristics and that the tendency to report complaints in various spheres of functioning simultaneously may be observed. It seems to be important to consider that SCCs are related to several psychological factors when it is included in a cognitive diagnosis and treated as a direct indicator of a cognitive condition.
