Opis:
The content and relationships between amounts of macroelements (Ca, Mg, K, Na and Fe) and soil properties along three catenas in the young glacial Łyna River valley, NE Poland, are discussed in the paper. The results were presented against the background of four geochemical landscapes distinguished within the study area: eluvial / trans-eluvial, eluvial accumulative, trans-super-aqual and super-aqual. The middle part of the Łyna River valley is covered with Fluvic Phaeozems and Dystric Fluvisols formed from sands, loams and silts. In some parts, Mollic Gleysols (Limnic) formed from peats and gyttja occur. In the areas adjacent to the floodplain, Eutric Umbrisols (Pantocolluvic) and Haplic Umbrisols (Colluvic) formed from loams, silts and clays are located. The upper slope of the valley is covered by Luvic Pheazems, Luvic Umbrisols, Brunic Dystric Arenosols and Dystric Arenosols The average content of macroelements reached: Cat – 6.60 g kg-1, CaHCl – 3.17 g kg-1, Mgt – 2.79 g kg-1, MgHCl – 0.68 g kg-1, Kt – 7.27 g kg-1, KHCl – 0.20 g kg-1, Nat – 0.84 g kg-1, NaHCl – 0.22 g kg-1, Fet – 8.72 g kg-1 and FeHCl – 5.48 g kg-1. Th content of macroelements in soils of the analysed area was varied between the four geochemical landscapes. The analysis, supported by PCA ordination, resulted in significant positive relations between the macroelement contents and silt (0.05-0.002 mm) and clay (<0.002 mm) soil fractions, CaCO3, pHKCl and amounts of organic matter, as well as an inverse relation to the share of sandy (2.0-0.05 mm) soil fraction. Soils in super-aqual geochemical landscape were the most abundant in macroelements (except KHCl and Nat). The most typical sites of macroelement accumulation were the following geochemical landscapes: super-aqual > trans-super-aqual > eluvial accumulative > eluvial / trans-eluvial.

Opis:
The alarming problem of a decline in physical activity among children and adolescents and its detrimental effects on public health has been well recognised worldwide. Low physical activity is responsible for 6% of deaths worldwide and 5-10% of deaths in the countries of the WHO European Region, according to country. Within the last decade, many initiatives have been launched to counteract this phenomenon. The objective of presented study was analysis of the level of physical activity among adolescents and young adults in Poland, according to the IPAQ questionnaire. The study group covered 7,716 adolescents: 5,086 children attending high school and secondary schools and 2,630 university students. Low physical activity was noted among 57% of schoolchildren and 20.84% of students. Analysis of the level of physical activity according to the IPAQ indicated that it was lower among girls, compared to boys. An additional analysis, with the consideration of the place of residence, showed that the highest percentage of the population with low physical activity was noted in the rural areas (29.30%), while among the urban inhabitants of cities with a population above 100,000 it was on the level of 23.69% and 20.57%. Median for weekly physical activity by respondents` gender was on the level of 1,554.00 MET*min. weekly among females, and 2,611.00 MET*min. weekly among males (p<0.000). The highest weekly physical activity expressed in MET*min. was observed among the inhabitants of towns with a population less than 100,000, whereas among the rural population and inhabitants of large cities with a population of over 100,000 the weekly physical activity was on a similar level (1,830.50 and 1,962.00 respectively). An extended analysis of respondents’ physical activity showed that during the day students spend significantly more time in a sedentary position, compared to schoolchildren. The presented results of studies indicate the necessity to continue and intensify actions to promote various forms of physical activity among students and schoolchildren. A constant decrease in physical activity observed among children and adolescents suggests that it is necessary to pay greater attention to this social group while developing health programmes.

Introduction and Objective: The aim of this paper is to assess the level of tourist activity of pupils and students from schools in Warsaw, as well as factors influencing this level of activity. Methods: A two-part questionnaire was used that included questions related to participation in tourist trips (day, long, short, and trips abroad) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: Among the analyzed factors (gender, level of school, level of physical activity), only the level of school turned out to be the factor which significantly (p=0.000) influenced the physical activity of the respondents. It was observed that tourist activity among pupils and students decreased with age. Conclusion: There is an urgent need for a systematic approach towards promoting and supporting the participation of children and young people in tourism. as well as setting examples of how to travel and rest. Carrying out intervention programmes demands the further identification of factors determining them (e.g. influence of parents’ leisure time behaviour), as well as the application of standardized research tools.

Opis:
The young glacial landscape of the nonhern Europe features numerous post-glacial structures, including drainless relief depressions which are usually filled with ater and are called ponds or kettle holes. Their prestence in Western Pomerania is associated mainly with a zonal arrangement of glacial forms related 10 the retreating icesheet front. Distribution of kettle holes was analysed in a region where their density is highly variable. The study covered mainly the Wełtyń Plateau, the Myślibórz. Lakeland, and the northern part of the Gorzów Plateau. About 11 thousand kettle holes smaller than 1.0 ha, marked on the late 19th century 1:25,000 topographic maps, were included in the analysis. The analysis of the kettle hole distribution, conducted with the aid of GIS software and spatial analysis statistics, demonstrates that the distribution of kettle hole dusters, the shape of the surrounding vegetation patches, and the kettle hole duster alingment may be important components of the retreat reconstruction. The elements mentioned, when factored in the analysis, may contribute to, i.a., understanding of the direction of the ice movement and the sequence of the icesheet front ranges.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the problem of simulation of random variables distributed according to Young measures associated with piecewise affine functions determined on bounded intervals. We start with simple functions which can take on a finite number of different values with inverse images being the intervals or their unions. We present some formal results connected with related discrete Young measures and propose an algorithm for generating random variables having such distributions. Next, based on these results we introduce an algorithm designed for approximation of Young measures in various, more general situations. We also present an example where a Young measure associated with a piecewise affine function is approximated with the help of computer simulations. In this benchmarking problem the theoretical results are compared with the ones obtained in the Monte Carlo experiment.

It is not clear to what extent trees growing on anthropogenic sites change their growth and biomass allocation to different organs. We assessed the aboveground biomass in a chronosequence of six Scots pine monocultures (between 6 and 20 years old) to examine how precisely the site-specific or control allometric equations may reflect the value of biomass accumulation and allocation in stands growing in harsh site conditions on the overlayer spoil heap made as a result of opencast brown coal mining. The site is characterized by poor edaphic and water conditions and nutrient deficiency. The control equations were developed from Scots pine stands growing on post-agricultural lands in the close vicinity of the spoil heap. We found that equation type significantly influenced results of predicted biomass accumulation for all biomass components studied (although results were only marginally significant for total aboveground biomass, P=0.08). Total aboveground biomass in younger stands (6–9 years old) estimated using site-specific equations was >40% higher and for older stands (17–20 years old) from 7 to 27% lower than estimated using equations developed for the control sites. Our study revealed that under harsh environmental conditions in spoil heaps, biomass of young Scots pine stands significantly differ from values calculated based on control equations developed for more fertile soils with better water conditions in the same region. The control biomass equations may not be suitable to estimate biomass accumulation in stands growing on infertile habitats with poor water conditions, if the control equations are developed for nearby stands but growing under better site conditions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of extended home-based vision therapy as a treatment for symptomatic convergence insufficiency (CI) in young exophoric adults. Twenty-four adults with symptomatic exophoria at near with convergence insufficiency were divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group received 24 weeks of vision training, while the control group received no therapy. The three major outcome measures were the scores on the convergence insufficiency symptom survey V15 (CISS-V15), the near point of convergence and the positive fusional vergence at near. Only subjects from the experimental group demonstrated statistically and clinically significant changes in the CISS-V15 score (improvement of 20 points), near point of convergence (improvement of 5.5 cm) and positive fusional vergence at near (improvement of 15 Δ). No significant changes of either symptoms or signs were evident for the control group. The results presented in this study showed that extending the time and number of home based therapy techniques might be an effective treatment modality in adult subjects with CI. This therapy might be an alternative way for treatment of symptomatic exophoric CI subjects, who cannot attend office sessions.

Opis:
Here we describe a new species of the metriorhynchid thalattosuchian Cricosaurus, C. bambergensis sp. nov., from the Upper Jurassic Torleite Formation of Wattendorf near Bamberg, Bavaria (southern Germany). The holotype and only known specimen is a nearly complete skeleton that shows a number of diagnostic traits including a bicarinate dentition formed by labiolingually compressed tooth crowns that lack a conspicuous enamel ornamentation and the presence of a distinct midline ridge with paired depressions on the palatines. Our phylogenetic analysis recovers a grouping of Cricosaurus bambergensis sp. nov. with C. elegans and C. suevicus. The implications of the new Cricosaurus species to the species complex from the late Kimmeridgian–early Tithonian of southern Germany is discussed. Our description of C. bambergensis demonstrates that the specific, and morphological, diversity of Cricosaurus in southern Germany was higher than previously thought. This coincides with the recent trend of re-evaluating the species-complexes of extant taxa, and the identification of new “cryptic species”. As such, the crocodylomorph fossil record will need to be re- examined to ensure there is not an underestimation of their biodiversity.

Introduction and objective. Nowadays, the process of the westernization of eating habits is perceived to be one of the main causes of epidemics of civilization diseases, such as metabolic syndrome. The aim of the study was to assess the westernization of eating habits among 100 Japanese (aged 18-23 years) and 111 Polish female students (aged 19-25 years) of nutrition science related faculties. Materials and methods. Food-frequency questionnaires were used to assess a dietary pattern during the four seasons of a one-year investigation. Data obtained in each season was pooled. The frequency of consumption of different foods (servings/week) between the two countries was compared and characterization of the dietary patterns of both studied populations was analyzed by factor analysis. Results. When food consumption between the two countries was compared, apart from total meat and meat products and high-energy drink intake, significant differences were observed in all foods and food groups. Three dietary patterns were identified in both groups. Among Japanese participants, the first pattern was ‘traditional Japanese’, the second ‘sweets and beverages’, and the third ‘Western’, explaining 9.0%, 8.5% and 6.4% of the total variance, respectively. Among Polish participants, the first pattern was ‘prudent’, the second ‘Western’, and the third ‘sweets and alcoholic beverages’, explaining 8.2%, 7.7%, 6.4% of the total variance, respectively. Although the ‘Western’ dietary pattern was found in both groups, there were some differences in the remaining dietary patterns between the two countries. Conclusions. In the Japanese participants, significant cultural influences on habitual food intake could still be observed, and the extent of diet westernization seems to be smaller compared to the Polish participants.

Purpose: This study was done to ascertain gender dif ferences in trained swimmers between their Critical S wim Speed (CSS). Certain metabolic responses, imme diately after 400 meters free style swimming (FSS), w ith maximum effort, were also studied. Methods: The analysis was conducted in trained swi mmers between 12- 18 years age. Height, weight, bod y fat quantity were estimated using standard techniqu es. CSS was measured for each swimmer. Blood samp les were taken within two minutes of 400 meters FSS, with maximum efforts. The blood creatinine, lactic ac id, serum calcium, serum urea and serum urea nitroge n were estimated using standard laboratory methods. Results: With the maximal effort of 400 meters FSS, values of hematological variables for both sexes were found to increase many folds than reference values. Si gnificant (p<0.05) gender differences were observed in CSS and blood creatinine. The positive significant (p<0.05) correlation was found between CSS and heig ht in the swimmers. For trained male swimmers signif icant positive correlations among CSS, blood urea an d serum urea nitrogen were found. Conclusions: This study reflects metabolic status of b oth trained male and female swimmers, after their full efforts. Besides blood creatinine no significant differe nces were observed in them. So it may conclude that e ffective physical training minimizes the metabolic de mands during their full efforts and gender differences could be overcome.

Quantum dots have been identified as potential sources of entangled photon pairs, essential for many applications in quantum information. However, in practice structural properties of the dots result in polarisation splitting of the emission lines, which has prevented the realisation of such a source. Here, we present two techniques developed to control the polarisation splitting in a quantum dot both irreversibly and reversibly. We find that the splitting is strongly dependent upon the emission energy, or lateral confinement, of the quantum dot. Thus by precise control of the InAs deposition thickness, it is possible to produce ensembles from which dots with zero polarisation splitting can be easily selected. Additionally, we demonstrate that by using modest in-plane magnetic fields to partially mix the bright and dark exciton states, the polarisation splitting can be reversibly tuned to zero for most dots of a certain type. Finally, we demonstrate the emission of triggered entangled photon pairs from a quantum dot with approximately zero splitting with fidelity >70%.

Student scientific organizations and research groups create numerous opportunities for the development of interests and passions related to many fields of science. In case of geological sciences, student research groups are organizations which are conducive to exchanging first scientific ideas between young geologists and experienced researchers. These associations constitute also a generational bridge between students and their teachers. The beginnings of the firstformal organizations of geology students date back to the second halfof the 1940s and 1950s. Due to the nature of geological studies, membership in scientific circles, is associatedfrom the beginning of their activities with many research trips and participation in conferences. This paper aims at presenting the history and contemporary activity of geological student research groups in Poland. We describedfive organizations, whose activities constitute an integral part of geological studies in our country. Authors wish to remind distinguished teachers and members of student research groups, who contributed to their development in a special way.
