Opis:
The literature on problems concerning archaeological conservation studies is scarce from a theoretical and methodical point of view; it is limited in principle to speeches and papers delivered at archaeological sessions and conferences arranged, inter alia, by the MCWs, to mention only more important ones such as papers by W. Hensel, Z. Rajewski and some other Polish archaeologists. A slightly different aspect, i.e. the protection o f archaeological monuments in towns and green lands, was raised at the conference at Białystok—Białowieża held in 1977. The problem o f general recording o f archaeological posts was brought up by W. Chmielewski. Trying to make a survey o f achievements in archaeological conservation studies, the author has encountered difficulties in the field of terminology and criterions o f qualifying archaeological research works as conservation ones. The attempt to establish these criterions necessitates assuming that all archaeological studies are scientific, because they employ scientific methods. Conservation studies differ only in slightly different purposes and conditions in which they will be carried out, depending in practical conservation needs, e.g. on the level o f endangering. This will result in time and space limitations affecting the outcome, i.e. resources o f information acquired during the studies. Limitations should be effected in a possibly cognizant way, based on competent decisions. In face o f a devastating method of studies and the above limitations, o f particular importance is thus the documentation and integration o f research disciplines, selected in conformity with the nature o f an object and relevant research problems. Of substantial significance will also be the quality of research methods as well as a structure o f the workshop including its technical facilities. A due attention is also attached to creating and observing a programme o f research works, which, next to research problems involved, should include a schedule o f works as well as conclusions and postulates on conservation that can be formulated at that stage. The process o f archaeological studies can be divided into two stages. The first stage comprises cataloguing o f the site (sites), a sounding reconnaissance study, test drilling by geophysical and other methods. This would provide grounds for preparing a programme o f proper studies, i.e. their second stage, and would also give the answer to problems set as a result o f scientific works, usually commenced in the course o f field studies. Basic trends of archaeological conservation studies in Poland were given form in the fifties’ and early sixties’, on the occasion o f archaeological studies carried out prior to investment works (to mention only the site o f constructing the Nowa Huta Steelworks near Krakow) and also in connection with studies on the beginnings of the Polish state. The latter studies gave rise to group research works involving foundations and monuments’ complexes with medieval architectural relics, continued by the Institute o f Material Culture History at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Archaeological Department as well as by a number of museums and the MCWs. They also brought about a development and improvement of research and documentation methods, broader integration of disciplines involved and also extended a scope o f studies with contemporary objects. Studies on sites o f prospect investment works and linked with the expansion o f towns and settlements resulted in forming the so-called broad-planed method o f research by means o f big mechanical equipment. The method, enabling to view a complete picture o f the settlement and its interdependencies, is employed by archaeologists from the MCWs during studies on sites o f future mines, water reservoirs, etc. A slightly different trend is displayed by cataloguing investigations aimed at a country-wide scale and based on a uniform system o f documentation. This long-term research project, already under execution in some parts o f Poland, provides for a cooperation between all archaeological circles. In future, it should also include a campaign o f cataloguing such field forms as medieval strongholds and grave mounds, basing on uniform methods o f documentation. * * Monuments’ Conservation Workshops, state-owned enterprises, comprise at present nine Archaeological Conservation Workshops, in operation since 1957 and employing about fifty archaeologists.

Opis:
The excavations of Gdańsk have revealed large quantities of amber artifacts. The presence of both raw material and unfinished artifacts indicates that amber was worked on the spot. Unworked amber and unfinished artifacts were mainly concentrated in excavation trenches XI, XIV and XXII located within the assumed seat of the feudal lord (fig. 1), in layers dating from the end of the 10th to the first quarter of the 11th century. Remains of at least a few workshops producing finger-rings have come to light. However, no traces of any buildings have survived. Of the 43 amber objects found in trench XI as many as 35 are unfinished finger-rings. An area of only 8 m2 in trench XIV (storage pit and layer) yielded 4,069 amber lumps and 60 unfinished finger-rings in various stages of working. Workshops concentrated in the more important quarter of Gdańsk used raw materials which were the monopoly of the prince, i.e. amber and silver (a crucible with traces of melted silver has come to light). It seems very likely that the artisans in question were working directly for the court of the prince.

Theatre Workshop
Opis:
The theatre is a therapeutic method used in the work with the disabled. The main purpose of therapeutic classes is to support the development of the disabled. Owing to a incomprehension of the term theatre therapy, Lech Śliwonik has introduced the term theatre for life. The latter term clearly defines that the theatre with the disabled „should be a way”, should create chances and give opportunities for further development. In order to answer the questions about the course of classes, what aim instructors and therapeutist have, the best way would be to give a good example. Such a theatre is the Theatrical Workshop at the Workshops of Occupational Therapy „Source” in Lublin. It is a theatre and one of the workshops of the same name. The theatre is conducted by Aneta Stodulska (the instructor and director of the group). The main purpose is to support the development of the disabled. The most important is the person and meeting half way his or her needs and potentialities. Aneta Stodulska has worked out her own method of work. The proper understanding of the term theatre therapy and appropriate aim and method bring about concrete results. The theatre Theatrical Workshop achieves good results both in the therapeutic and theatrical areas. The author quotes accurate results of her work in her master's thesis entitled „The Therapeutic Influence of the Theatre on the Disabled. The Activity of the Theatrical Workshop of the Workshop of Occupational Therapy ”Source„ in Lublin.” It was written under the supervision of Prof. Maria Barbara Styk and defended in June 2002.

Opis:
This study was carried out to assess Future Workshop (FW) regarding its usefulness as a participatory ergonomics method, using a descriptive evaluation design analysed by phenomenographical approach. The study was conducted among professional cleaners, health care personnel and miners, with a sample of 105 participating subjects in 8 different FWs. Multiple methods, giving a combination of both qualitative and quantitative data, were used for data collection. Good involvement of participants was observed during workshops. Evaluations immediately after FWs and 3 months later showed a strong relationship with high correlation, indicating that the perception of FW participants was very positive. Interviews revealed conformity between developed problem identification and proposed changes. Participants’ own perceptions of FW’s influence on creativity depict their belief of developed ideas and solutions in order to identify and solve workplace problems. FW is considered to be a useful ergonomics tool, and its qualities are related to structure and practical performance.

POLISH-GERMAN WORKSHOPS (2002)
RECONSTRUCTION OF HISTORICAL MONUMENTS
Opis:
Joint workshops held by Polish and German historians of art, architects and conservators of historical monuments - 'Die Schleifung. Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau historischer Bauten in Deutschland und Polen' (Demolition. The Destruction and Reconstruction of Historical Buildings in Germany and Poland) - took place on 11 and 12 January 2002 upon the initiative of the German Historical Museum (Deutschen Historischen Museum) in Berlin, the German Polish Institute in Darmstadt, and the Polish Institute in Leipizig. The topic of the event related to the twentieth- century destruction and reconstruction of historical buildings in Germany and Poland, with particular attention paid to the post-World War II period. A publication containing the workshop material, issued in Germany in 2005, was edited by Dieter Bingen and Hans-Martin Hinz. Germany and Poland were among those countries which, as a result of wartime hostilities, suffered greatest losses of their historical substance. After the war, the number of West German supporters of the reconstruction of historical monuments remained small, and the dominating view called for the necessity of loosening historical urban complexes and implementing the residential reform formulated by the left-wing architectural avant-garde from the 1920s and 1930s. A thus comprehended 'improvement' of the cities and their redesigning, caused by the development of motorization, was applied to justify the demolition of the preserved historical monuments, or those which were suitable for reconstruction. The conservators found it difficult to free themselves from the overwhelming 'to conserve and not to reconstruct' dogma. In Poland, the loss of historical monuments was the consequence of an intentional policy conducted by the German occupant. The total devastation of the Warsaw Old Town was an act of reprisal for the anti-German uprising and a consistent continuation of the extermination policy. Hence, right after the war, Polish historians of art and conservators of historical monuments, enjoying extensive social support, recognized, contrary to the binding doctrine, that not only individual buildings of significance for national culture but also entire Old Town districts were suitable for reconstruction. The papers presented in the course of the workshops and the ensuing discussions contributed to filling the information gap concerning the attitude towards the post-war reconstruction of historical monuments in Germany and Poland. The workshop themes were even more topical in view of the fact that at the turn of the twentieth century both countries experienced a second tide of the reconstruction of towns and historical monuments.

Opis:
The Ukrainian resistance security police established in 1940 by S. Bandera and S. Łenkawskyj performed the role of a secret service and counter intelligence agency within Bandera’s faction of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). The first security police was commander was M. ¸ebed. From March 1941 he was replaced by M.Arsenych. The hierarchy of the service was closely connected with the hierarchy of OUN. Besides the leadership centre, there were also local departments consisting of two sections: information gathering and investigations. Fighting squads of the security police, which among others arrested people and executed death penalty were reporting to the department empoloyees of each level. Security police members were the most reliable members of OUN. The investigation conducted by OUN security police was merciless. What are known as third degree methods, i.e. torture, was used. In the case of minor offences, security police members thrashed suspects with beech sticks. People sentenced to death were shot or hanged. There were also cases of brutal murders. Between 1943 and 1945 OUN security police took an active part in the slaughter of Polish people. In the years 1945–1948, those Poles who collaborated with the communist government or were actively opposed to the Ukrainian resistance were executed. In practice, executions of Poles were not just limited to those two groups. OUN security police applied the principle of collective responsibility (i.e. killing entire families). At the same time, Ukrainians suspected of collaboration with the communists were also executed. The orders to apply solely the principle of personal responsibility were not given until May 1945. However, entire families were massacred beyond that date. Local OUN security police department employees were entitled to order the execution of a person. They enjoyed practically unlimited prerogatives. As a result, investigations were often brief and resistance members were executed in spite of unsubstantiated charges. The Soviets took advantage of the situation by staging numerous provocations, the result of which was the death of many OUN members wrongly accused of cooperation with the communist security police. OUN security police was law unto itself. The power of the OUN security police chief M. Arsenych (until his death in January 1947) was almost equal to the power of the leader of the Ukrainian National Insurgent Army (UPA). Separate departments of OUN security police survived until 1951 when most of the remaining members of this organisation took over positions as leaders of the OUN underground. The activities of OUN security police stirred a lot of controversy among Ukrainian researchers. On the one hand, they emphasize that the collective responsibility used by the OUN security police OUN discouraged local people from supporting the underground, but on the other they regard the liquidation of communist agents as legitimate.

W latach 2005-2006 Centrum Informacji o Środowisku UNEP/GRID-Warszawa, we współpracy z Centralnym Ośrodkiem Doskonalenia Nauczycieli, przeprowadziło 3 edycje warsztatów dla nauczycieli i doradców przedmiotowo-metodycznych. Warsztaty nosiły tytuł: Wykorzystanie technologii informacyjnych w nauczaniu przedmiotów przyrodniczych i programach edukacji ekologicznej. W warsztatach wzięło w sumie udział ok. 80 doradców przedmiotowo-metodycznych i nauczycieli przedmiotów przyrodniczych (biologia, geografia, przyroda). Zajęcia prowadzono w trzech modułach tematycznych (w trakcie trzech jednodniowych spotkań). Odbywały się one w pracowni komputerowej, w terenie i na sali wykładowej. Były to moduły tematyczne. Zakres merytoryczny warsztatów bazował na dorobku następujących programów edukacyjnych: Program GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment), e-LSEEE, e-Learning in Science and Environmental Education, Scenariusze zajęć lekcyjnych dla nauczycieli gimnazjum – scenariusze zajęć (terenowych i z zastosowaniem komputera), Różnorodność biologiczna w Polsce oraz Elektroniczny Atlas Środowiska Polski – multimedialny programu edukacyjny, Eksperymenty w szkole – scenariusze praktycznych doświadczeń dostosowanych do warunków i programów szkolnych. Warsztaty były przeprowadzone przy udziale specjalistów poszczególnych dziedzin (GIS, teledetekcja, gleboznawstwo, klimat i atmosfera), doświadczonych metodyków (geografia, biologia) oraz przez zespół Centrum UNEP/GRID-Warszawa i przedstawiciela Szkoły Festiwalu Nauki.
In the years 2005-2006, Environmental Information Centre UNEP/GRID-Warsaw, in collaboration with the National In-Service Teacher Training Center, conducted 3 series of training worskhops for teachers and teaching methodology consultants. The workshops were organised under a guiding theme of Using information technologies in teaching science subjects and in environmental education programmes. Altogether, the workshops were attended by approx. 80 participants: teaching methodology consultants and teachers of science subjects (such as biology, geography, natural science). Each workshop was divided into 3 separate training thematic modules, each carried out in sessions within a single day in the form of lectures, computer workshops, and field exercises. Subject matter of the training worskhops was based on the contents, methodology, and results of the following educational programmes: The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Programme; e-LSEEE: e-Learning in Science and Environmental Education; Lesson plans for middle-school teachers (lesson plans for computer-assisted field classes); Two multimedia educational packages (on CD): Biodiversity in Poland and Electronic Atlas of the Environment in Poland; Science experiments at school – manual on practical experiments tailored to specific conditions and school curriculum. The training workshops were conducted by a highly qualified team consisting of experts in such fields as GIS, remote sensing, soil science, climate and atmospheric research, experienced methodology consultants (biology, geography), a representative of the Science Festival School, and by staff of the UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre.

On 20-23 April 2009, the locality of Tocnik (40 kms from Prague, the Czech Republic) played host to workshops held as part of the ”Roofs of Europe II” programme, attended by representatives of Belgium, France, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. The prime theme of the workshops was widely comprehended research and documentation connected with historical roof constructions and coverings. For years, our colleagues from the Czech Republic have been promoting traditional artisan methods for repairing wooden constructions and have tried to popularise their knowledge. The best proof is the conservation of numerous historical buildings, where damaged places have been repaired by using traditional methods; other evidence are numerous professional publications, training and studies. Extremely interesting experiences included making a working replica of a mediaeval treadmill crane upon the basis of historical sources (including illustrations from the Wenceslas Bible from 1390-1400), used for, i.a. repairing a roof over part of the mediaeval castle in Tocnik. In the course of a study trip the workshop participants enjoyed an opportunity to examine the crane’s practical application.
