The paper is devoted to the analysis of the onymic cultural tradition of the believers of Judaism and Christianity in Podlasie. The author also discusses how the coexistence and integration of various cultural elements is reflected in the anthroponymy of both communities in the region. Stemming from Judaism, Christianity incorporated many elements of Jewish culture, which can be observed in various spheres. From the onymic perspective, it regards mostly biblical names from the Old Testament, which are included in the repertoires of names of both Jewish and Christian inhabitants (Abraham — Abraham, Beniamin — Benjamin, Jakub — Jacob, Józef — Joseph, Szymon — Simon; Anna — Anna, Elżbieta — Elisabeth, Maria — Mary etc.). In Podlasie, from the 15th c. up to the 20th c., the coexistence and mutual influences of both cultures contributed to diminishing differences in the onymic sphere, which is reflected in the presence of identical basic forms of biblical names, and the short forms derived from these names. The syncretism is even more apparent in the surnames of Podlasie inhabitants derived from the same anthroponymic, toponymic, or appellative bases by means of identical derivational suffixes.

This article aims to show the other (different from the mission or parish retreats) forms of preaching of the word of God adapted to the local needs, which should be organised by the parish priests in accordance with the decision of the diocesan Bishop.The first part of the article shows various forms of preaching of the word of God in the parish.The second part points out the sources and content of “other forms of preaching” of the word of God. The third part examines important types of “other forms of preaching” in the parish.
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie innych (różnych od misji czy rekolekcji parafialnych) form przepowiadania słowa Bożego, dostosowanych do miejscowych potrzeb, które proboszczowie winni organizować zgodnie z zarządzeniem biskupa diecezjalnego.W jego pierwszej części przedstawiono różne formy przepowiadania słowa Bożego w parafii.W drugiej części wskazano na źródła i treść „innych form przepowiadania” słowa Bożego, natomiast część trzecia została poświęcona ważniejszym rodzajom „innych form przepowiadania” parafialnego.

This study explored the effect of computer-mediated corrective feedback on the 10th grade EFL students’ performance in the writing skill. Seventy-two 10th grade female students at Al Hammra secondary school for girls situated in Mafraq (Jordan) were selected as the study sample. They were randomly assigned into four groups, three experimental groups (18 in each) and one control group (18 students). The three experimental groups were taught using the computer-mediated corrective feedback modes including teachers’ feedback (students who received feedback only from the teacher), students’ feedback (students who provided and received feedback from their peers), and both (students who received and provided feedback from students and teacher). The control group was taught using computer-mediated communication. However, it neither provided nor received corrective feedback. Findings of the study reveal that there were significant differences between the mean scores of the control group and the experimental groups due to the method of teaching in favor of the experimental groups which received corrective feedback. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there was a significant effect for the mean scores between teachers’ feedback, students’ feedback or both, in favor of both where students received corrective feedback from their peers and the teacher.

Mosques are Islamic places of worship where speech and music rituals are performed. Since two different languages are spoken there, mosques are described as bilingual spaces. Among studies on the complex acoustic structure of mosques there are only few studies on speech intelligibility and none on the bilingual characteristics of the mosque. Therefore, a comprehensive study has been carried out to evaluate the acoustic comfort of the contemporary Turkish mosques (CTM) over speech intelligibility of Turkish and Arabic languages. In the study the CTM model providing optimum acoustic conditions recommended in the literature is examined on speech intelligibility by applying acoustic simulation and auralisation techniques, as well as word recognition tests. As a result, the acoustic condition in the model is found insufficient in terms of speech intelligibility of both languages. Also, with the decrease of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the Turkish intelligibility ratio is observed to decrease at least two times faster than the Arabic ones. This study is viewed as an outline for researchers to further study mosque acoustics in terms of speech intelligibility, and thus support the standardisation process of the acoustic comfort criteria for the mosques.

The paper has two main objectives: the first is to present an overview of the phenomenon of multi-word items in English, and discuss their prevalence in native speaker usage. The second is to discuss how proficient non-native speakers of English, and in particular those who are training to become translators, may benefit from classroom training that increases awareness of the primary role of chunks and other multiword units in native-like speech. It is argued that classroom training may tend to emphasise grammar rules and lexis over building a repertoire of multi-word items; more practise in this area may improve fluency, conserve energy, and enhance long-term language learning among adult foreign language users with nuanced foreign language performance goals.

Der vorliegende Artikel behandelt das Thema der „Deutschen Komposita als kulturell gepräg‑ te Wortbildungseinheiten und deren Übersetzung ins Polnische“ am Beispiel von Herta Müllers Roman Herztier und dessen Übersetzung ins Polnische mit dem Titel Sercątko. Es werden dabei zunächst Komposita als solche — sowohl im Deutschen als auch im Pol‑ nischen — definiert sowie deren Funktionen und verschiedene Typen besprochen. Besonders im Blickpunkt stehen in diesem Zusammenhang Divergenzen im Bereich der in der jeweiligen Sprache verwendeten Begriffe (s. Zusammenrückung vs. zestawienie und zrost). Im praktischen, der Analyse der polnischen Herztier ‑Übersetzung gewidmeten Teil wird die Aufmerksamkeit des Lesers anfangs auf für die Übersetzung potenziell problematische Charakte‑ ristika von Herta Müllers Prosa gelenkt, um anschließend konkrete Textpassagen vergleichend zu analysieren. Dabei kann Folgendes festgestellt werden: die typisch deutschen Komposita können nicht ohne Bedeutungsverschiebungen ins Polnische übertragen werden, es werden dafür nämlich teils univerbierende, teils multiverbierende Konstruktionen verwendet, wodurch jedoch ein großer Teil der Bildlichkeit verloren geht. Viele dieser Komposita sind kulturell geprägte Wendungen, wie z.B. Patentstrümpfe oder Essenskarte, die nicht eins zu eins ins Polnische übertragen werden können. Nichtsdestotrotz hat die Übersetzerin gute translatorische Lösungen gefunden, was man teilweise mit Parallelen zwischen den kulturellen (mit dem Leben in der Rumänischen Volksre‑ publik zusammenhängenden) Erfahrungen Müllers und den der Übersetzerin Alicja Buras (in der Polnischen Volksrepublik aufgewachsen) erklären kann.Alles in allem, können wir in der polnischen Übersetzung den klaren Versuch erkennen, die goldene Mitte zwischen covert translation und overt translation zu finden, wobei Letztere überwiegt.
This article deals with the topic of German compound words as culturally marked word‑ ‑formation units and their translation into Polish, based on the example of the translation of Herta Müller’s novel Herztier (The Land of Green Plums). Firstly, the author specifies compound words as such — in German and Polish, as well as their differing functions and types. Under focus especially are the divergences in the area of the terms used in each language (cf. Zusammenrückung vs. zestawienie and zrost). In the beginning of the practical part, which is dedicated to an analysis of the translation into Polish, the attention of the reader is directed to the potentially problematic characteristics of Herta Müller’s prose, which can appear during the process of translation. In this regard, we can state: that the typical German compound words cannot be translated into Polish without semantic displacements, for the translation it is necessary to use partly uni ‑ and partly multi‑verbated constructions. However, this results in the loss of an important degree of imagery. Many of these compound words are culturally marked collocations, e.g. Patentstrümpfe or Essenskarte, which cannot be translated faithfully into Polish. Nevertheless, one can say that the translator has found satisfactory translational solutions, which we can partially explain as parallels between the cultural experiences of Herta Müller (her life in the Romanian People’s Republic) and of the translator, Alicja Buras (raised in the Polish People’s Republic). All in all, we can recognise in the Polish translation the clear effort to find the golden mean between the so ‑called covert translation and overt translation, with the second one dominating.

Studies on stop unrelease in second language acquisition have hitherto focused on the productions of Slavic learners of English (Šimačkova & Podlipsky, 2015) and experiments on Polish learners of English; the latter show the tendency to release stops on a more regular basis depending on the type of stop combinations (Rojczyk et al. 2013). In the present study, we aim to test the efficiency of audio-visual explanations as opposed to distracted imitation in pronunciation teaching amongst French learners of English. While unreleased stops are rather frequent in French and English - especially in plosives clusters (Byrd, 1993; Davidson, 2010), unreleased plosives in final positions are less common in French (Van Dommelen, 1983). During phase 1 of the experiment, three groups of 12 native French learners of English (level A1/A2, B1/B2 and C1/C2) were asked to read idiomatic expressions containing both homogeneous and heterogeneous sequences of voiceless stops straddled between words, namely, in sequences like “that cat” [dat˺ kat˺], and stops at the end of sentences like “I told him to speak” [tə spiːk˺]. In the second phase of the experiment, one half in each group was given a different task. The first group heard recorded versions of phase 1 sentences and before reading them out loud, counted up to five in their L1. Stimuli for imitation contained no release in the contexts under scrutiny. The other half had to watch a video explaining the phenomenon of unreleased stops with a production of phase-two expressions propped up by hand gestures. They were then asked to re-read the sentences given in phase 1. Based on these results the current study makes recommendations about what working environment should be prioritized in pronunciation teaching both in class and online (Kroger et al. 2010), and suggests ways to assess students and visually keep track of their progress.

Looking through the modern history we notice that in the contemporary people is getting more and more difficult to follow the truth because of the verbal manipulation, cultural disorientation in the society, secularism and liberal mentality. The author suggests a return to the Bible in order to better understand God’s revelation. Jesus Christ is the Last Word of the Father and that is why He becomes the anchor for Christians looking for the Truth. We can not pretend that we do not know Christ. The only way to fulfill the revelation is to listen to Christ, to accept him. What is more, the author shows some positive aspects of Christ’s revelation: God revealed as a Father rich in mercy, who teaches people how to pray, how to be obedient to God’s will and how to follow Christ, who is the Way which leads to the Father.

Among the proposals for the implementation of the motu proprio Spiritus Domini and Antiquum Ministerium of Pope Francis (2021), opening the instituted ministries also to women and to lay people not on the way to ordination, the Note of the Italian Bishops’ Conference of June 2022, is certainly one of the most relevant with respect to the discernment, formation and conditions of access of candidates. By receiving a sacramental from the bishop in a community liturgy, for a perennial ministry at the service of the Word of God, the care of the body of Christ in the Eucharist and in the sick, as well as for Christian initiation and small base communities, the instituted ministers can contribute to the synodal revitalization of the ecclesial communion. Decreed ad experimentum for three years, the Italian document can inspire other Bishops’ Conferences around the world.
