Opis:
The article presents selected issues regarding the current state of the author's knowledge about the provenance and technological structure of three ivory objects from the Wilanów collection, detached from a large set of fragments with a shared inventory number Wil.9/489/84 and the name Koszyczek [Basket]. These exhibits are a very interesting example of ivory objets d'art made by Chinese artisans between the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. Unfortunately, they are in a poor condition. The inventory of the set of objects marked as Wil.9/489/84 initiated interdisciplinary conservation research on three openwork ivory objects: Basket I, Basket II w Wilanowie and Basket III (plate). Material and technological analyses were performed. Research on their provenance began in 2011, prior to the launch Studia Wilanowskie of conservation work. The results of the analyses contributed to the recognition of their probable age and place of origin. The research conducted so far has also revealed many interesting aspects, which are currently the subject of further studies.

Opis:
The rare jewel which is kept in the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów is a flower bouquet of asymmetrical, diagonal composition. It consists of flowers set with precious stones, tied with a large bow also set with precious stones. This largish jewel, measuring 19.8cm in height, was made of gilt silver. The flower petals and the bow are tightly filled with amethysts and rock crystals; a total of about 1,105 stones were used in its making. The hitherto findings point towards the circles of jewellers who made use of patterns by Augustine Duflos found in his pattern-book Recuevil de Desseins de Joallerie… (published in Paris, 1767); one of the charts in this book shows a composition of flowers almost identical to that in the Wilanów bouquet. The Wilanów jewel was probably made before the end of the 18th century. The precise cuts of small stones could point to the 19th century; yet such cuts were possible to make much earlier. For instance, masterful cuts can be observed in the eminent works by the Swiss jeweller Jerome Posier, working for the Russian tsars in the 1760s.

Opis:
The Potocki family contributed greatly to Wilanów gardens in two fundamental aspects: they developed the landscape arrangement of the palace and park, and they created alarge collection of glasshouse and orangery plants. Exotic plants were grown in the garden grounds in an orangery, a conservatory for fig trees, two hothouses, a glasshouse and two conservatories for pineapples. Until now, the species composition of the plant collection was known only from fragmentary information in the press covering garden exhibitions, in which Countess Aleksandra Potocka was actively involved. The missing information was found in two previously unknown inventories of 1856 and 1857 kept in the collection of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw (AGAD). They contain lists of glasshouse and orangery plants prepared by the inspectors of the Wilanów gardens. The aim of the present research was to identify the reasons and conditions for the preparation of these inventories, and to characterize the plant species mentioned therein. Manuscripts were rewritten and decoded, and then analysed for historical aspects and detailed botanical information. The precise historical context of both documents was established after the comparison of historical plant names with the modern nomenclature, and a total of 763 plant species and varieties were identified. Most of these plants are native to tropical and subtropical regions of North America, South America or Asia. The extraordinary diversity and richness of the Wilanów collection of exotic plants indicates that the owners of the estate at that time, Count August Potocki and his wife Aleksandra, had a huge interest in botany and provided versatile forms of patronage to gardens.

Opis:
Notes of a Curator at the National Museum published in 1970 in the second volume of the book Struggle for Cultural Goods is the only generally available testimony to saving the Wilanów historic monuments by Jan Morawiński, a forgotten hero from the times of WW II. Additionally priceless because of Morawiński documenting the looting of 137 paintings belonging to the pre-WW II Branicki collection at Wilanów. The above-mentioned Notes were published by the Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy after the manuscript kept in the private archive of the author’s daughter Agnieszka Morawińska. The notes, however, resemble pieces of paper torn from a notebook in which an earlier chapter is missing. The missing chapter does exist, yet for unknown reasons was omitted in the two-volume Struggle for Cultural Goods. Warsaw 1939–1945 edited by Prof. Stanisław Lorentz. The present paper is based on Morawiński’s hand-written testimony, supported by archival sources and recollections of his colleagues from the National Museum in Warsaw (MNW). From August 1939 to August 1944, Jan Morawiński, together with others, was involved in saving precious museum exhibits in the Museum building, but also throughout Warsaw. He was involved in packing the historic monuments into crates which were to help them survive the toughest times, and he helped to put out fires at the Museum, risking his own life. Moreover, he rescued the Royal Castle collections during the hardest bombing of Warsaw, transporting them to the storages in Warsaw’s Jerozolimskie Avenue. For his dedication he was awarded the Virtuti Militari Cross of the 5th class by Gen. Juliusz Rómmel. After Warsaw’s surrender, he was assigned Head of MNW’s storerooms and inventories: when Director Lorentz was absent, he acted as his deputy. In the first period of the Nazi occupation he courageously faced German officials. Furthermore, he headed the clandestine action of inventorying and documenting German destructions and plundering. The knowledge amassed in this way was extremely helpful in the restitution of the looted historic monuments, not only museum ones. He also contributed to documenting the destruction of the Warsaw Castle. Imprisoned by the Nazis, he went through Gestapo’s hands at Daniłowiczowska Street in Warsaw. Later on, he became manager of the Museum of Old Warsaw in the Old Town, at the same time acting as a guardian of the Wilanów collection. Following the defeat of the Warsaw Uprising, he participated in the so-called Pruszków Action in whose course he was badly injured.

Opis:
A valuable work associated with the output of Raphael is extant in the collection of the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów. It constitutes a repetition of The Holy Family, a work by the Urbino master which used to be located in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome and which has been considered lost. The painting, also known as the Madonna del Velo, is now believed to be one and the same as The Holy Family or, as an alternative name, La Madone de Lorette, currently in Musée Condé in Chantilly. The history of Raphael's original is complex and often mysterious. Over a hundred of its copies and variants are known. Enchanted with the beauty of this work, Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrati (1560-1618), a presbyter of the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, purchased it in 1591 and allegedly commissioned two copies of it for his brothers. The author added the figure of an angel and a portrait of the cardinal to Raphael's original composition. The links known to have existed between Cardinal Sfondrati and the outstanding Baroque painter Guido Reni (1575-1642), as well as extant drawings and prints, have promoted the conjecture that he might be the author of this exceptional work. However, an exhaustive study of Guido Reni's output and a careful investigation of archive materials in Poland and in Italy are required to determine its authorship. The painting arrived in Wilanów around the middle of the 19th century, when the palace was owned by Count and Countess August Potocki. Four articles pertain to one of the most interesting, and most valuable, paintings in the Wilanów collection, the Madonna del Velo, discussing various issues linked with its history, its study and its conservation. The Wilanów version is particularly interesting because of its high artistic quality and the fact that it shares some stylistic features with works by Raphael considered to be its prototypes. The technological structure of the Wilanów painting and the materials used in its making were investigated in the course of a research project and with the involvement of many scholars representing various areas of expertise. Analyses were conducted which made it possible to describe the board used as the painting surface, the pigments and the binding agents of the painting's layers, which is of considerable importance in further research on the workshop that produced the work. An account of the recent conservation interventions involving this painting is appended to the material.

Opis:
This article presents and analyses six unpublished documents that concern the continuation of the villa 'factory', the maintenance of the garden and the Wilanów manor a few years after the death of King Jan III, during the administration of the estate by Prince Aleksander Benedykt. Four of them are letters written in January 1698 and spring 1699 by Jan Kazimierz Żeligowski, plenipotentiary and administrator of the Wilanów estate, to Aleksander. They are held in the Manuscripts Department of the University of Warsaw Library. The letters contain key information on the appointment of the stuccoer Antonio Perti as head of this 'factory' and the scope of his responsibilities and circle of collaborators between 1699 and 1704, as well as a detailed description of the damage caused to the palace by the lack of adequate supervision in the preceding period. Żeligowski's account is supplemented by news of other investments in Wilanów and undertakings made during this period. These sources are a valuable addition to the accounting archives and property records from the Vilnius collection (LVIA) compiled and published in 2014 by Aleksandra Skrzypietz. The last two documents come from the same collection and other Sobiesciana from the Archive of the Warsaw Province of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin at the 'Honoratianum' Spirituality Centre in Zakroczym were used for their correct interpretation. This is a list, drawn up on 1 March 1720, of the movable property of Wilanów divided between the princes Jakub Ludwik and Konstanty Władysław. Until then, they were part of the deposit in the Warsaw Capuchin monastery, in the rooms of the royal suite and in the upper oratory - the place where the royal coffin was displayed. The creation of the inventory and the final distribution of the movables may be connected with the sale of Wilanów by the princes to Elżbieta Helena Sieniawska née Lubomirska, the wife of the Grand Crown Hetman, which was not finalised until 1720.

Opis:
According to extant sources, in the 1840s and 1850s August Potocki bought a group of ceramic objects from two of the most renowned Prussian factories of that time: the first one owned by Tobias Christoph Feilner, in Berlin, the second - by his pupil Ernst March, in Charlottenburg. Most of those objects decorated the private garden by the southern wing of the palace, the others - other parts of the gardens, some of them were positioned in the interiors. The paper, which is a contribution to the elaboration of the collection of ceramic garden sculptures from the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów, presents an overview of the history of both factories in which these purchases were made, and analyses the archival, bibliographic and iconographic sources connected with the collection from Wilanów. The paper is complemented by a catalogue of preserved sculptures and archaeological shards.

Opis:
It is the assumptions, goals, and effects of the new permanent display mounted at the Museum of King John III’s Palace at Wilanów titled Art Collecting in the Potocki Family that are the topic of the present paper. The Exhibition presents a less known fragment of the Wilanów Palace’s history when it was owned by the Potockis: Aleksandra née Lubomirski and Stanisław Kostka, their son Aleksander, and grandson August and his spouse Aleksandra née Potocki. The three generations of the Pilawa-coat-of-arms family wrote a new, albeit extremely important chapter in the history of the former royal and magnate residence, placing in it the Museum of Art and the Memorial Site of the history of the Polish nation for almost a hundred years The Potockis amassed artistic collections and national mementoes, and introduced changes to the layout of the private spaces of the residence in order to adjust them to serving museum purposes. In harmony with the Potockis’ idea, the systematically growing collection turned into a treasure opened to the general public. It is the first entry in the Wilanów Guest Book: 5 August 1805 that is regarded to have been the launch of the Museum’s public operation. In its narrative and layout the new display refers to the Potockis’ Museum. The interiors of the garden gallery on the Palace’s first floor have been transformed according to ico -nographic records from the 19th and early 20th century. In the southern gallery we remind of the Library once functioning here, in the northern one, in turn, we recall Warsaw’s important cultural event from 1856: Exhibition of Antiquities. As a result of the introduced changes new display spaces have been created: the Historical Cabinet, Print Cabinet, and the Iconographic Cabinet. The first is dedicated to national mementoes, whereas the latter two are cosy display rooms of objects on paper.
