Opis:: Bestselling author Richard Voss was one of the literary pioneers of naturalism in the German Empire. Until the 1880s he wrote numerous naturalistic works. Among those works there is the now forgotten tale Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden which had been translated into English by Ambrose Bierce. Bierce’s version The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter became successful. The new punch line of the translation indicates that Bierce was familiar with Voss’s most important literary source: Matthew Gregory Lewis’s famous novel The Monk. The essay examines the so far unnoticed connection between those three texts and Lewis’s impact on the naturalistic period.

Opis:: An important issue in designing optical transport networks (OTN) is security. The concept of 1+1 protection requires to connect each origin-destination(OD)-pair by at least two node-disjoint paths. In the case of a single edge or node failure, the connection of all OD-pairs is maintained under 1+1 protection. On a ring, 1+1 protection is given naturally. Moreover, on rings, the routing effort is typically decreasing. These observations motivate the investigation of ring structures for OTN. When developing a ring structure for telecommunication networks, several subtasks can be identified. Ringshave to be designed, OD-pairs have to be assigned to rings, communication among rings has to be defined, a proper flow routing has to be chosen, and rings have to be dimensioned regarding flow capacity. In this paper, we address the first two issues, namely generation of rings and assignment of OD-pairs to rings. Our approach allows to distinguish active and non-active (glass-through) nodes in OTN. Active nodes are equipped with active routing hardware that weakens the optical signal and has impact on feasible ring lengths. Non-active nodes do not influence the optical signal. Although a consideration of active/non-active nodes is important in ring design, only a few references address this issue. We propose an algorithm for generating random ring candidates. Moreover, we present a mathematical model for the assignment of OD-pairs to rings subject to a feasible choice of active nodes. We test our methods using a case of Deutsche Telekom.

Opis:: In this paper we propose some extensions of the minimum labelling spanning tree problem. The main focus is on the minimum labelling Steiner tree problem: given a graph G with a color (label) assigned to each edge, and a subset Q of the nodes of G (basic vertices), we look for a connected subgraph of G with the minimum number of different colors covering all the basic vertices. The problem has several applications in telecommunication networks, electric networks, multimodal transportation networks, among others, where one aims to ensure connectivity by means of homogeneous connections. Numerical results for several metaheuristics to solve the problem are presented.

Opis:: The hop-constrained minimum spanning tree problem is the problem of determining a rooted spanning tree of minimum cost in which each path from the root node to any other node contains at most H hops or edges. This problem relates to the design of centralized tree networks with quality of service requirements (in telecommunications) and has a close relation with other tree problems. In this paper we investigate the adaptation of some well-known "repetitive" heuristics used for the capacitated minimum spanning tree problem to the hop-constrained minimum spanning tree problem and investigate some simple look ahead mechanisms for enhancing the quality of a savings heuristic. Computational results for a set of benchmark tests with up to 80 nodes are presented.

Opis:: Long term evolution technologies provide new standards in mobile communications regarding available bandwidth. It is expected that users of one radio cell will share more than 100 Mbit/s in future. To take advantage of the full feature set of next generation mobile networks, transport network design has to face new requirements, caused by the architectural changes of LTE technologies. Especially the newly defined X2 interface impacts on the transport network requirements. X2 enables direct communication between evolved base stations (eNBs) and thus, enforces local solutions. At the same time a tendency of locating network elements at fewer, central sites to reduce operational expenditure can be observed, in particular concerning the transport layer. This leads to the question of how the direct X2 connection of eNBs on the logical layer can be accommodated with a general centralization of transport networks. Our considerations show that for LTE, a centralized transport network is able to realize the local meshing between eNBs. However, for LTE Advanced, the standards currently discussed by the 3GPP initiative could lead to enhanced requirements on the X2 interface latency. Consequently, the implications for the network architecture have to be analyzed in more detail.

Opis:: Today's long haul and metro high-speed networks are mainly based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) or its American equivalent synchronous optical network (SONET) and wavelength division multiplex (WDM). On the other hand, the large amount of traffic growth during the last years has been caused mainly by Internet protocol (IP) traffic. Traditionally, the IP-router based networks and the cross-connect based synchronous networks are often planned and operated separately. However, in line with new developments such as generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS), network providers begin to realize that the convergence of these two worlds promises significant benefits. A set of software tools to support the network designer has been developed and used on various kinds of real world network planning problems arising in the SDH/WDM context. This includes, among others, 1+1 protection planning, static restoration and dual homing issues. These tools are extended with additional features to handle aspects of the IP/SDH interplay in a GMPLS environment. The two main components are an AMPL based integer model (solved via CPLEX) and a heuristic implemented in C++.

Opis:: Short sediment cores from the eastern Gotland Basin were investigated using a multi-proxy approach in order to reconstruct the environmental conditions of the area during the past 1000 years. Sediment data and facies were discussed in relation to hydrographic features (salinity, oxygen) and climate change. During the medieval warm period (MWP), from about 900 to 1250 AD, the hydrographic and environmental conditions were similar to those of the present time (modern warm period, since about 1850): a temporally stable halocline, caused by regular saline water inflows from the North Sea, prevents vertical mixing and leads to bottom water anoxia and the deposition of laminated, organic-rich sapropels. During the period from about 1250 to 1850, referred to as the cold phase (including the Little Ice Age), the environmental conditions of the central Baltic Sea were distinctly different: the lower salinity, resulting from reduced North Sea water inflows, allowed vertical convection of the water column and long-term stable ventilation of the sea bed (oxic stage). Both the productivity of the planktonic ecosystem as well as the preservation of organic matter in the sediments improved during the warm periods. The anthropogenic impact can be identified within the recent laminated sequence by a temporal reconstruction of pollutant deposition. Our findings imply a climate-change driven shift in the environmental conditions and the ecosystem of the Baltic from the north to the south and back to the north.

Opis:: With the ever-rising data volume that is demanded by the market, network planning in order to minimize the necessary investment while meeting the demands is constantly an important task for the network providers. Synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) and wavelength division multiplex (WDM) form the core of many current backbone networks. In order to solve the provisioning and routing problem in such WDM networks, we develop a variable neighborhood search (VNS) metaheuristic. VNS is a metaheuristic that combines series of random and improving local searches based on systematically changed neighborhoods. An integer flow formulation is modeled in AMPL and solved by CPLEX in order to obtain optimal solutions as a reference for the heuristic.

Opis:: During the previous two decades liner carriers within maritime shipping have broken the barriers from being pure transportation providers towards being logistics service providers. Most of the top 20 liner carriers worldwide hale set up spin-offs providing services from local booking up to 3rd party logistics services, combining the business advantages of tight linkages with liners together with the negotiation freedom with demanding customers by providing an extension of service coverage. Economical evaluations of transocean routes and global networks are of interest for decision makers responsible for business strategies as well as for operations. It is crucial to achieve appropriate judgements about which liner routes are profitable and how to build better service networks so that the companies' brand could be attractive to, e.g., ship- pers, including exporters, importers and forwarding agents. In this paper we discuss the corresponding trade-offs as well as related decision support systems of relevant service providers and companies.

W przypadku daminozydu stężenie wynosiło 2550 i 4250 mg·dm⁻³ (B-Nine 0,3 i 0,5%); przy użyciu flurprimidolu odpowiednio 7,5 i 15 mg·dm⁻³ (Topflor 0,05 i 0,1%). Rośliny posadzono 4 kwietnia 2001 r. do doniczek o średnicy 12 cm. Przycięto je nad 3 - 4 liściem w celu wzmożenia krzewienia. W połowie kwietnia begonie opryskano roztworami retardantów. Spośród zastosowanych retardantów największy wpływ na długość pędów głównych miał daminozyd w obu stężeniach. Pędy roślin potraktowanych tym retardantem były krótsze przeciętnie o 20% w stosunku do kontrolnych. Najsilniejszą reakcję obserwowano u odmiany ‘Illumination White F₁’ (19,1 cm przy stężeniu 4250 mg·dm⁻³). Flurprimidol nie wpływał wyraźnie na żadną z wymienionych cech. Liczba szypuł kwiatowych zależała przede wszystkim od odmiany, w mniejszym stopniu obserwowany był wpływ retardantu. Największe kwiaty męskie tworzyła odmiana ‘Illumination White F₁’, która zakwitła najpóźniej - na początku czerwca. Cechą zależną od odmiany była liczba pędów I rzędu. Najwięcej ich odnotowano dla ‘Illumination White F₁’ a najmniej dla ‘Illumination Apricot F₁’.
The influence of daminozid (B-Nine 85 SP) and flurprimidol (Topflor 015 SL) on the growth and flowering of Begonia tuberhybrida ‘Illumination Apricot F₁’, ‘Illumination White F₁’, Tenella Rose and ‘Tenella Salmon Orange F₁’ were estimated. There were two concentrations of each retardant: daminozid 2550 and 4250 mg·dm⁻³ (B-Nine 0.3 and 0.5%) and flurprimidol 7,5 and 15 mg·dm⁻³ (Topflor 0.05 and 0.1%). Plants were planted on 4 April 2001 to 12 cm diameter pots. Plants were cut above 3 - 4 leaf to enhance branching. After 10 days Begonia tuberhybrida was sprayed with retardants. The influence of daminozid on the length of main stems was the strongest at both concentration. Stems treated with this retardant were shorter on average by 20% as comparing with the control. ‘Illumination White F₁’ showed the strongest reaction (19.1 cm by 0.3% B-Nine). Flurprimidol had no significant influence on any of the recorded features. Number of flower stems first of all depended on cultivar. The retardant influence was much more significant. The biggest male flowers produced ‘Illumination White F₁’, which flowered as the last at the beginning of June. The feature depending on the cultivar was also number of the first order stems. The biggest one was obtained in ‘Illumination White F₁’, the smallest was recorded in ‘Illumination Apricot F₁’.

W przypadku daminozydu stężenia wynosiły 2550 i 4250 mg·dm⁻³ (B-Nine 85 SP 0,3 i 0,5%), a flurprimidolu 7,5 i 15 mg·dm⁻³ (Topflor 0,05 i 0,1%). Rośliny posadzono 4 kwietnia 2001 r. po dwie do doniczek o średnicy 14 cm. W połowie kwietnia werbeny opryskano roztworami retardantów. Największy wpływ na długość pędów miał daminozyd w obu stężeniach. Zastosowanie jednorazowego opryskiwania tym retardantem spowodowało zahamowanie wzrostu pędów o około 15%. Większą liczbę kwiatostanów odnotowano przy zwiększeniu stężenia oprysku daminozydem z 2550 do 4250 mg·dm⁻³ i przy zastosowaniu flurprimidolu w obu stężeniach. Reakcja odmian na zastosowane retardanty była różna. Największy wpływ na skrócenie pędów stwierdzono u odmiany ‘Vilena’ przy użyciu daminozydu w obu stężeniach i odmiany ‘Spikena’ przy zastosowaniu tego retardantu w stężeniu 4250 mg·dm⁻³. Odmiana ‘Vilena’ różniła się istotnie od odmiany ‘Spikena’; tworzyła dwukrotnie więcej krótszych pędów z dwukrotnie większą liczbą kwiatostanów. Duże różnice między odmianami stwierdzono także w obrębie jednej grupy Babylon. Najwięcej pędów z najmniejszą liczbą kwiatostanów stwierdzono u odmiany ‘Perlena’ natomiast odmiana ‘Silvena’ tworzyła krótkie pędy z dwukrotnie większą liczbą kwiatostanów.

There were two concentrations of each retardant: daminozid - 2550 and 4250 mg·dm⁻³ and flurprimidol - 7,5 and 15 mg·dm⁻³ (Topflor 0.05 and 0.1%). Plants were planted on 4 April 2001, two into a 14 cm pot. After 10 days plants were sprayed with solutions of retardants. The strongest influence on the length of stems was observed with daminozyd in both concentration. Using this medium only once was obtained 15% shortening of stem length. More inflorescences were obtained by increasing the concentration of daminozyd from 2550 to 4250 mg·dm⁻³ (B-Nine from 0.3 to 0.5%) as well as by using flurprimidol in both solutions. Cultivar reacted differently to both retardants. The strongest reaction was observed in ‘Vilena’ cultivar with both concentration of daminozyd and ‘Spilena’ cultivar with higher concentration of this retardant. Cultivar ‘Vilena’ differed significantly from ‘Spikeana’ in producing twice shorter stems with twice bigger number of inflorescences. Also big differences within one Babylon group were reconded. The highest number of stems with the lowest number of inflorescences were noted in ‘Perlena’, while ‘Silvena’ gave short stems with twice bigger number of inflorescences.

Opis:: Artykuł zajmuje się sukcesem i porażką utopii insularnej w kontekście refleksji narratologicznych oraz teorii spatial turn. Nie chodzi w tym przypadku o przedstawienie życia na wyspie, jak to czyni wiele projektów literackich dziewiętnastego wieku, do których krótko artykuł nawiązuje. Dyskutowany jest natomiast kryzys romantycznego toposu „Waldeinsamkeit“ (osamotnienie w lesie). Analizie poddane zostały utwory Das Odfeld (1889) WILHELMA RAABEGO, Die Narrenburg (1844) ADALBERTA STIFTERA oraz niedoceniona i rzadko interpretowana nowela THEODORA STORMA Waldwinkel z 1874, będąca szorstkim i z tego powodu innowacyjnym przeciwieństwem do propozycji literackich Raabego i Stiftera. Tekst ten przedstawia, w jaki sposób czas i historia ingerują w utopię miejsca i przenoszą ją na płaszczyznę realistyczną.
The article deals with successful and unsuccessful constructions of the island utopia (which, however, are not bound to any real island, as in so many designs of the century, which are, however, briefly referred to), in terms of narrative issues and approaches from the Spatial Turn, and connects them with resolution tendencies of the so-called romantic “loneliness of the forest.” Das Odfeld (1889) by RAABES and Die Narrenburg (1844) by ADALBERT STIFTER’S are discussed, and in particular THEODOR STORM’S greatly underrated and little-interpreted novel Waldwinkel (1874), as an unattractive and therefore innovative counter-model, which shows openly how time, and history itself, break into the spatial utopia, and thereby transfer it to a realistic level.
Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Gelingen und Scheitern der insularischen Utopie (die aber nicht an die reale Insel gebunden ist wie so viele Entwürfe des Jahrhunderts, auf die allerdings knapp Bezug genommen wird) unter narratologischen Betrachtungen und Ansätzen aus dem Spatial Turn und bringt sie in Verbindung mit Auflösungstendenzen der romantischen ‚Waldeinsamkeit‘. Zur Diskussion stehen dabei RAABES Das Odfeld (1889), ADALBERT STIFTERS Die Narrenburg (1844) und als garstiges und daher innovatorisches Gegenmodell vor allem THEODOR STORMS stark unterschätzte und wenig interpretierte Novelle Waldwinkel von 1874, die offen vorführt, wie Zeit und Geschichte selbst in die räumliche Utopie einbrechen und sie damit auf eine realistische Ebene transferieren.
