Opis:
Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on care for our common home, invites humanity to cultivate “ecological virtues” in order to become more responsible stewards of our imperilled common home. According to the Pope, the formation of healthy habitus for the stewardship of Earth can be achieved only through the cultivation of appropriate ecological virtues. It may be recalled that there is a growing awareness of the importance of the role of ecological virtues in environmental ethics today. In this paper we shall reflect on seven ecological virtues: praise, gratitude, care, justice, work, sobriety, and humility. They do not receive a separate treatment in Laudato Si’, but are mentioned throughout the encyclical. They are like signposts that indicate the road that we need to travel in caring for our common planetary home.

The aim of this paper is to bring the resources of virtue epistemology to bear on the issue of the epistemic objectivity of science. A distinction is made between theoretical virtues, which may be possessed by scientific theories, and epistemic virtues, which may be exercised by individual scientists. A distinction is then made between ontological objectivity, objectivity of truth, and epistemic objectivity, the last being the principal focus of the paper. It is then noted that a role must be played by deliberative judgement in determining how to apply the theoretical virtues. It is suggested that such judgement may be virtuous in light of the exercise of the epistemic virtues. It is argued that the primary location of epistemic objectivity is the theoretical virtues, whereas the epistemic virtues of scientists play a subordinate role.

Care Philosophy
Politeness
Social Virtues
Affability
Vulnerability question
Opis:
The Philosophy of Care finds in human life a sort of calling to take care of each other. This vocation for every human being is based on the vulnerability that belongs to the human condition. Among ordinary dimensions of vulnerability/care (such as eating, resting, learning, transporting, nurturing), one that is very ordinary and even broader is that of image. Theory of Politeness deals with this image care, responding to its vulnerabilities.Care is a central reality of human relationality, which requires a process of practical learning. Virtues are the concrete reality of the growth of the person. Pertinent for image care are the virtues related to truth, those related to dependence and autonomy, and the traditionally-called social virtues. After a long evolution of the latter from classical thought to the Middle Ages, it remains a system of virtues that illuminates the current way to perceive the image, its care, and the rights and duties related to image. The current propensity to safeguard goods through laws is transforming the type of “debt” that corresponds to virtues like truthfulness, liberality and affability, earlier acknowledged as being not very coercive. Leaving aside possible political proposals, this phenomenon draws attention to the deep humanity of such fields, where people sometimes presume a responsibility that presses the conscience more than duties endorsed by laws. The vocation to care transforms everybody into a caregiver, with the widest sphere in the case of the image.

Tradycyjna teologia wyróżnia dwie kategorie cnót: teologiczne i kardynalne.
The article is the interpretation of the teaching of Pope Francis on "the joy of the Gospel." Analysis Exhortation "Evangelia gaudium" led to the conclusion that the joy of the Gospel according to St. Francis is a Christian virtue. Traditional theology distinguishes two categories of virtues: theological and cardinal. Benedict XVI points to a new group of virtues: ecclesial. The basis for the joy according to Francis is the adoption and proclamation of the Gospel to her. The source is the person of Jesus Christ. Through union with Him, the human person is liberated from alienation, selfishness and slavery. The joy of the Gospel revealed in the dialogue, which is the exchange of gifts between individuals. It takes place in the meeting, which gives you the opportunity to learn another person, God and man. Ecclesial context of joy is presented in the private opening to Christ and the opening of the Church to all people. Joy Christian is defined based on the concept of joy of the Gospel according to Pope Francis, is eligible for a new category of virtues – ecclesial.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to presenting the ancient Greek and Roman, as well as Christian sources regarding the virtue of Gratitude, to be observed in modern times among monuments of various categories – in painting and sculpture, commemorative decoration projects, as well as philosophical, theological, and literary texts discussing the desired characteristics of a righteous, fair, good man, and inscriptions reflecting sets of exceptionally positive virtues which described a given figure, especially rulers. Gratitude is inseparably connected with charity. It is manifested by feeling, repayment, and virtue. The idea of Gratitude has often been manifested by a stork, known for its extraordinary care towards parents already since antiquity. A proposition for representing the virtue of Gratitude was offered by Cesare Ripa in Iconologia (1593, illustrated edition 1603), commonly used by artists. It is personified by a woman holding a stork and a twig of lupine. However, the origins of its painting imagery with regard to Italian art prove to go beyond the publication of Iconologia. Stork as a symbol of Gratitude appeared already in Andrea Alciato’s Emblematum liber (1531) in the Gratiam referendam emblem (An obligation must be repaid). Its message was widely discussed in Pierio Valeriano’s Hieroglyphica (1556). The stork motif, on the basis of observing the animal’s habits and symbolism traditions reaching antiquity, became associated with man’s best qualities regarding their relations with others – helping other people and cooperating with them. What constituted the basis of such special status of Gratitudo virtue were ancient sources of knowledge about storks’ habits, reaching Sophocles’ tragedy Electra, Aristophanes’ comedy The Birds, Aristotle’s Historia animalium, Artemidorus’ Oneirokritika, Pliny the Elder’s Natural History, and Claudius Aelianus’ De natura animalium. A significant role in strengthening the beliefs about a stork and its habits was also played by Physiologus and Horapollo’s Hieroglyphica. In antiquity, the topic of Gratitude was examined by Aristotle, Cicero, and Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger. Among Christian authors, it was particularly discussed by St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. By analysing examples of both verbal and pictorial representations of the virtue of Gratitude, including various thinkers’ reflections on that topic, we find it closely related to justice, meaning a noble attitude towards helping others without expecting any prize, as well as remembrance about the received blessings.

Opis:
Life in the 21st century has presented people with unprecedented appeals and ethical challenges which are nowhere more evident than in educational institutions as well as in the online space. A renewed interest in the character as one of the crucial ethical developments is gaining momentum today. Good character is based on the virtues one possesses. We argue that education focused on the cultivation of intellectual virtues such as curiosity, intellectual humility, intellectual autonomy, attentiveness, intellectual carefulness, intellectual thoroughness, openmindedness, intellectual courage and intellectual tenacity are needed for individuals to lead fulfilling lives. At least, growing in intellectual virtues seems to be a valuable and desirable educational aim. This theoretical study strives to make a twofold contribution to the area of knowledge: firstly, it aims to contribute to the area of character and moral education through describing its forms and features; and secondly, it aims to contribute to virtue epistemology by identifying its nature and focus and outlining nine intellectual or epistemic virtues. Further to the second contribution, the study ends by arguing that the intellectual virtue approach and the critical thinking approach both help to cultivate intellectually virtuous critical thinkers.

Opis:
Rectitude, being a crucial category of deontology and arethology, is relatively rarely studied by representatives of sciences, such as pedagogy. The author approaches selected issues within a wider scope of research concerning human rectitude. This paper aims to answer the following questions: what kind of moral values and what particular virtues rectitude is associated with, and how, through a process of moral education can teachers, educators and care-takers shape in their students or subordinates such trait (and moral attitude) as rectitude? Referring to the current state of knowledge the author emphasizes the significance of interdisciplinary category of rectitude in the pedagogical thinking, and presents both traits in the scientific context of collective virtue, disposition (trait) and moral attitude. The author also analyses the relationships between rectitude and other moral values or virtues. The hermeneutical methods applied in this research proved especially useful in view of the comparative character of the study.

The aim of the survey was to find out what attitudes young people aged twelve to seventeen maintain towards adult civic qualities and virtues as compared with their demands for changes in civic behaviour. The objective of the study was to find out whether, based on their perception of adult behaviour, the critical youth wish for changes in civic behaviour and which aspects of citizen life they should be linked to. The survey tool used was a questionnaire investigating attitudes and behaviour in various situations of citizens’ everyday life. There were 33 Likert-type question items in the questionnaire (e.g. They are proud of their country.). The questionnaire showed a high level of reliability. The survey sample consisted of 533 adolescent respondents (aged 12–17). There were four factors generated through factor analysis from the collected results: 1. Respect for traditional social norms and roles; 2. Tolerance and respect for other people’s rights; 3. Patriotism and trust in public institutions; 4. Application of constitutional civic rights. The adolescent respondents were asked to mark the statements which should be changed. The outcome confirmed the hypothesis of high criticality in the respondents, which we consider a significant social challenge: adolescents demand a major change in civic behaviour described by the total of 14 items (42.7%) in all four factors. The highest number of proposed changes falls into the factor of “Respect for traditional social norms and roles”, while the fewest proposed changes concern the factor of “Patriotism and trust in public institutions”. According to the respondents, traditional social norms and roles and tolerance and respect for other people´s rights should be strengthened as well. The attitude towards active civic virtues implies a need for better and more sophisticated civic virtues education, both within the family and in schools. The results obtained from this survey will be used in generating civic education programmes for primary and secondary schools.
