Visual data analysis is an appealing and increasing field of application. We present two related visual analysis approaches that allow for the visualization of graphical model parameters and time-dependent association rules. When the graphical model is defined over purely nominal attributes, its local structure can be interpreted as an association rule. Such association rules comprise one of the most prominent and wide-spread analysis techniques for pattern detection, however, there are only few visualization methods. We introduce an alternative visual representation that also incorporates time since patterns are likely to change over time when the underlying data was collected from real-world processes. We apply the technique to both an artificial and a complex real-life dataset and show that the combined automatic and visual approach gives more and faster insight into the data than a fully-automatic approach only. Thus, our proposed method is capable of reducing considerably the analysis time.

Opis:
In this paper, we introduce a novel method of joint compression and encryption of visual data. In the proposed approach the compression stage is based on block quantization while the encryption uses fast parametric orthogonal transforms of arbitrary forms in combination with a novel scheme of intra-block mixing of data vectors. Theoretical analysis of the method indicates no impact of encryption stage on the effectiveness of block quantization with an additional step of first order entropy coding. Moreover, a series of experimental studies involving natural images and JPEG lossy compression standard were performed. Here, the obtained results indicate a high level of visual content concealment with only a small reduction of compression performance. An additional analysis of security allows to state that the proposed method is resistant to cryptanalytic attacks known for visual data encryption schemes including the most efficient NZCA attack. The proposed method can be also characterized by high computational efficiency and feasibility of hardware realizations.

Opis:
The environmental conditions in the Gulf of Finland vary significantly in different locations. In addition, the gulf is a busy and important area for waterway traffic and international trade throughout the year. In summer, the area is ideal for recreational activities such as boating and other water-related activities. Water accidents occur due to different factors and under varying weather conditions. This paper introduces a visual data mining analysis applied to Search and Rescue (SAR) missions related to recreational boating. Starting from a SAR operations database, an integrated database was constructed by adding weather and wave data. The aim was to compare the different mission types as well as the activity of different SAR organisations during challenging wind and wave conditions. The investigation was performed using visual analysis techniques. The densest areas of challenging wind and wave conditions were found in the western and eastern parts of the gulf. Other investigated parameters were travelled distances and occurrence of the incidents during different times of day. A more detailed analysis was conducted for one dataset.

This paper demonstrates the application of different image processing techniques to process high resolution visual images and merge it with low resolution thermograms to improve its level of detail. The same idea is applied in commercially available thermal cameras (e.g. FLIR with MSX® technology). Low resolution thermograms considered in this paper were obtained from a thermal scanner with point infrared detector (Fig. 1) sensitive to long wavelength infrared spectral range. The proposed algorithms are Laplacian, Sobel operator, embossing and Gaussian differential blur (described in section 3). The authors processed 6 different thermograms to qualitatively assess obtained results. It was done in a statistical manner through a survey and revealed that both Sobel operator and embossing provided the most clear, detailed and unambiguous results (Fig. 5). Such algorithms may be applied for processing more channels in a multispectral, cost-effective system.

Vessel traffic systems provide a high level of safety on coastal waters due to coastal radar stations and industrial cameras transmitting information to traffic supervision centers, as well. To improve a vessel traffic services is very important to ensure the speed and secrecy for the transmission of video images. The paper presents the basic issues of the multimedia data protection by digital watermarking and fingerprinting methods. Main applications for such digital marking were described in the paper as well as its requirements. Furthermore, the importance of multicast transmission for fingerprinting methods was presented by comparing the scalability of methods using only unicast transmissions and methods using multicast transmissions. The paper also presents the greatest threat to fingerprinting methods, which are attacks performed by more than one pirate. These attacks are called collusion attacks. The criteria that should be followed during identifying rogue users taking part in the collusion attack on the security systems has been presented. The paper also contains description of the extended Hillcast method, which belongs to the group of JFD (Joint Fingerprinting and Decryption) methods. The method provides a cryptographic security and digital fingerprinting of multimedia content, while maintaining high scalability. Main purpose of this method is VoD (Video on Demand) service, but it can also be used in vessel traffic supervision systems, such as VTS and AIS. In the last part of paper, there are results of studies which indicate high resistance to most common collusion attacks. Method proposed by authors can enhance the security of visual data transmission in vessel traffic systems.

W pracy opisano nową klasę specjalistycznych systemów informacyjnych, nazwanych UBIAS. Systemy takie należą do klasy kognitywnych systemów wnioskujących i są przeznaczone do znaczeniowej analizy skomplikowanych elementów nowoczesnych multimedialnych baz danych. Systemy UBIAS nadają się zwłaszcza do wydobywania znaczeniowej warstwy z informacji przedstawionej w postaci obrazów. W pracy przedstawiane są argumenty uzasadniające twierdzenie, że znaczenie obrazu i jego forma to dwa rozłączne aspekty, z których ten pierwszy jest zdecydowanie ważniejszy. Przedstawiane rozważania prowadzone są w sposób ogólny, ale eksperymenty, które doprowadziły do zdefiniowania systemów UBIAS odwoływały się w większości do semantycznej analizy obrazów biomedycznych.
Paper describes new class of cognitive information systems named UBIAS (Understanding-Based Image Analysis Systems). Such systems belong to the group of cognitive reasoning computer systems and are dedicated for the semantic analysis of the images. In contemporary information systems many types of multimedial (e.g. visual) patterns are used, and semantic oriented analysis of such type of information is necessary. The general idea of automatic understanding of the images can be applied to any type of image, but in paper only biomedical images are taken into account. For diagnostic purposes and for intelligent selection of proper medical images from the big and not annotated databases (e.g., Internet) we must consider semantic content of the images, because reasoning based on image information as well as selection suitable image information needs semantic analysis of the image merit content. Typical image processing, analysis and also pattern recognition or clustering is definitely not satisfied. For automatic image understanding we propose UBIAS systems. Such systems are predecessors of a new generation of intelligent systems for understanding of visual data and using this data in many purposes. Possible applications spread out from medical diagnosis, throw searching in visual databases up to extraction biometric characteristics for personal identification. Additionally such systems are very useful in the tasks of intelligent semantic i.e. based on merit content (and not only with regard to the form), information management in multimedia databases. Particular systems dedicated to semantic analysis of the images were described in previous authors papers, but the presented paper present the class of UBIAS systems using general description instead of examples.

The text deals with an issue of reading images as a way of perceiving the osmosphere. The author observes that eyesight might enhance other sensory modalities, provided that the eye no longer is isolated from natural interaction with the environment which has olfactory properties, but also audio and haptic. The analysis is related to two possibilities of reasoning about smells based on visual data. In the first case, the photograph appeals to the olfactory memory and serve as a tool to elicit a narration on scents from a person. In the second case, the use of the olfactory imagination seems to be necessary as a sort of subconscious for the hegemonic eye. The image an individual can see evokes internal representations, which should be taken into account when analysing and interpreting the urban space.

Systemy UBIAS, opisywane we wcześniejszych pracach, zapoczątkowały powstanie nowej generacji inteligentnych systemów rozumienia danych obrazowych, w szczególności medycznych. Systemy te są również przydatne przy operowaniu w multimedialnych bazach danych ilekroć wykonywane operacje (wyszukiwania, grupowania, raportowania) muszą być oparte na merytorycznym sensie zawartości obrazu, a nie na formie informacji obrazowej. Systemy E-UBIAS przedstawiane w niniejszej pracy stanowią nową kategorię kognitywnych systemów przystosowanych do semantycznej interpretacji obrazu. Innowacją wprowadzoną w systemach E-UBIAS i poszerzającą możliwości wcześniejszych systemów UBIAS jest wprowadzenie nowego elementu zdobywania wiedzy podczas normalnej eksploatacji systemu (czyli swoistego procesu uczenia). Wskazano na możliwości zastosowania tych systemów, a także na nowe możliwości ich wykorzystania do pozyskiwania danych obrazowych traktowanych jako charakterystyki biometryczne.
In previous papers given by authors the special class of computer vision systems was introduced and discussed. Such system named UBIAS was dedicated to cognitive analysis of images - especially medical ones. Replacing in UBIAS systems the image analysis and pattern recognition processes by cognitive resonance and automatic understanding we in fact introduce new class of vision systems which possibilities and advantages are not fully recognized until yet. Nevertheless the UBIAS image understanding systems have limitations related to "hand made" knowledge acquisition and representation process, which is necessary before starting the UBIAS system functioning. Sometimes collection of rules given by expert is too narrow, sometimes presentation of such rules in linguistic form used in UBIAS system is difficult, sometimes there are also another sources of problem - result is the same: The efficiency and quality of understanding of the images under consideration is not satisfactory. In all cases, when automatic understanding of the image using UBIAS methods is not good enough the solution can be E-UBIAS (Extended Understand-ing-Based Image Analysis System), which is presented in this article. The E-UBIAS systems set a new category of intelligent vision systems, which extend the possibilities of UBIAS towards acquiring knowledge and learning processes. In E-UBIAS systems two types of knowledge are used as a support of cognitive resonance procedures, leading to automatic understanding of the image semantic content. First type knowledge is acquired from experts ad is represented in linguistic form in graph-grammar structures used in typical cognitive resonance process. This is deductive part of the system. Second type knowledge is registered during normal work of the system. Every reasoning process performed by the system for some particular image give us new piece of information, which can be concatenated with other similar pieces coming from previous experiences. Such part of system is inductive one. Moreover systems belonging to the E-UBIAS class can be also used for collection of biometric characteristics for every person, which image was analyzed by the system and which semantic description was processed for automatic understanding purposes. It can be very useful in many security applications.

The article presents researcher’s attempts, methodological problems and queries in embodiment research during a Grounded Theory Methodology based study on social world of ballroom dancers. The research has been conducted among ballroom dancers, flamenco dancers, belly dancers, dance instructors, choreographers and judges. One of the aspects of the research is social construction of embodiment. In the article I will present techniques and methods of research such as autoetnography, interview, observation, photo and video analysis as well as kind of results they may give and what is really studied when using these methods. I will also present how one experiences his/her body in this group. I will try to answer a question: what is the real result of researcher’s attempts in embodiment study in sociology; do we really study body, or its social practices, socially constructed individual experience; how deeply can we make the research when our object (somebody else’s body) is not entirely intersubjectively available for our recognition.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki prac nad realizacją energooszczędnego, interaktywnego systemu bezprzewodowej transmisji danych wizyjnych z wykorzystaniem układów radiowych ISM pracujących w paśmie 2,4GHz. Wykorzystano mikrokontrolery MSP430F2274 wchodzące w skład zestawu eZ430-RF2500T firmy Texas Instruments oraz moduły kamer C328R. Obsługę transmisji radiowej zapewnia układ radiowy CC2500. Założeniem projektowym było zapewnienie możliwości interaktywnej regulacji położenia kamery. System został zaprojektowany, zrealizowany i przebadany pod kątem zasięgu efektywnej transmisji, poboru mocy, odporności na zakłócenia oraz niezawodności transmisji.
An important area of usage of wireless transmission are systems for secure, robust and energy-efficient visual data transmission. In the paper there are presented the results of work on a wireless digital visual data transmission interactive system, based on Texas Instruments RF communication modules eZ430-RF2500T. The modules operate in 2.4 GHz band and comprise MSP430F2274 microcontrollers and bi-directional RF communication modules CC2500. The system allows manipulating the camera direction with use of two micro-servos Turnigy TG9. In the paper the eZ430-RF2500T module is described [1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12] in Section 1, design conception and system components [2, 3, 7, 8] are discussed in Section 2, the system structure is presented in Section 3 (Fig. 1). Section 4 con-tains an overview of the research methodology applied [12, 13] and the results (Tables 1, 2, Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5). There were measured four features of the system, namely: influence of interferences, energy efficiency, Multipatch Fading and Raleigh Fading. The interference testing included tests of influence of interferences generated by a microwave oven, Wi-Fi router and cell-phones. The power consumption tests included measurements in various system states of a transmitter and receiver. The multipath Fading tests were carried out in a sports hall divided into a mesh. Raleigh Fading research was realised in the same location, by transmitting a set of frames for an increasing distance. The results are discussed and summarised in Section 5.

The author argues that visual methods are at the crossroads. They can remain in a niche or move into the mainstream by also addressing all people using visual materials. In the social sciences, visual methods encompass photography, video, and graphic representations. With respect to the visual, one has to note that all interpretations that are ontologically dependent on photography require more interpretation. 'Looking at' means 'being framed by,' and this means also the picture maker who is also considered to be a viewer. For the social sciences, pictures provide us with personal insights as well as with a personal record of spatial and social relationships. On this basis one may raise questions like 'how pattern variations occur over time?', 'how are social processes organized?', or 'what is the role of emotion in social life?' These are issues, the author continues, to which visual data can contribute. It may be added that methodological discussion should, however, besides the areas of visual data generation, analysis and interpretation also include solutions for the problem of communicating research findings. Some of these questions can be approached via controlled photo-observation, photo-elicitation techniques and imagery provided by the subjects themselves. Finally, the author turns to the question of what remains to be done? Here, he delineates three main areas: (1) evaluating the theoretical and conceptual basis of visual research, (2) creating public databases for the development and testing of theories, (3) defining 'best practices' for visual research.

The article presents the postcards as a source of knowledge about the social reality for a sociologist. The first part contains a description of postcards, the discussion of visual studies and the theoretical justification of postcards' status as a data. The analyzed object consists of two parties: the iconic recto and verbal verso. What we see on the postcards and then read - explains the second part of the article in which I empirically examine the usefulness of this type of sources, analyzing the photographic presentation of the city on one hand, and contents appearing on greeting postcards on the other.

It uses the visual data to con¬struct categories, theoretical properties of categories for action and visual phenomena that manifest themselves as processes. Present article introduces, therefore, the rules and procedures for visual grounded theory based on both my own, and other authors research experience. In order to bet¬ter illustrate the procedures in question, there are presented examples of these studies. The visual analysis is conducted at four levels: creating an image, its presentation, its content and structure and its reception. It is the basis for the concept of multislice imagining and visual grounded theory helps to reconstruct it.

Transmisja danych w postaci cyfrowej stosowana jest coraz częściej, głównie z powodu możliwości stosowania do ich pozyskania, przetworzenia, kodowania, korekcji, itd. maszyn i układów cyfrowych oraz ich znacznej podatności na kompresję. Niestety dane w postaci cyfrowej są bardzo podatne na zakłócenia. Liczne techniki zwalczania zakłóceń transmisji dzielą się na dwie klasy: nadmiarowanie sygnału i maskowanie zakłóceń. W obu dziedzinach można wyróżnić szereg rozwiązań. W artykule przedstawiono oryginalną technikę hybrydowego maskowania błędów transmisji obrazu monochromatycznego, będącą wynikiem badań przeprowadzonych w Instytucie Informatyki i Elektroniki Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego.
Digital signal transmission show itself to be an efficient and convenient form of communication. Unfortunately the data in a digital form are prone to transmission errors. Therefore some techniques have been introduced to minimize effect of such errors. There are two classes of such methods: adding some redundant data and error concealment. These two classes include numerous solutions. In the article a new method of concealment of image data transmission errors is proposed and discussed, which is a results of research project carried in the Instituteof computer Science and Electronics, University of Zielona Góra, Poland.
