Background: Software practice is evolving with changing technologies and practices such as InnerSource, DevOps, and microservices. It is important to investigate the impact of contemporary software engineering (SE) practices on software reuse. Aim: This study aims to characterize software reuse in contemporary SE practices and investigate its implications in terms of costs, benefits, challenges, and potential improvements in a medium-sized company. Method: We performed an exploratory case study by conducting interviews, group discussions, and reviewing company documentation to investigate software reuse in the context of contemporary SE practices in the case company. Results: The results indicate that the development for reuse in contemporary SE practices incurs additional coordination, among other costs. Development with reuse led to relatively fewer additional costs and resulted in several benefits such as better product quality and less development and delivery time. Ownership of reusable assets is challenging in contemporary SE practice. InnerSource practices may help mitigate the top perceived challenges: discoverability and ownership of the reusable assets, knowledge sharing and reuse measurement. Conclusion: Reuse in contemporary SE practices is not without additional costs and challenges. However, the practitioners perceive costs as investments that benefit the company in the long run.

Background: Empirical studies involving human participants need to follow procedures to avoid causing harm to the subjects. However, it is not always clear how researchers should report these procedures. Aim: This study investigates how researchers report ethical issues in the software engineering journal publications, particularly informed consent, confidentiality, and anonymity. Method: We conducted a literature review to understand the reporting of ethical issues in software engineering journals. In addition, in a workshop, we discussed the importance of reporting the different ethical issues. Results: The results indicate that 49 out of 95 studies reported some ethical issues. Only six studies discussed all three ethical issues. The subjects were mainly informed about the study purpose and procedure. There are limited discussions on how the subjects were informed about the risks involved in the study. Studies reported on how authors ensured confidentiality have also discussed anonymity in most cases. The results of the workshop discussion indicate that reporting ethical issues is important to improve the reliability of the research results. We propose a checklist based on the literature review, which we validated through a workshop. Conclusion: The checklist proposed in this paper is a step towards enhancing ethical reporting in software engineering research.

The compositional graded quaternary barriers (GQBs) instead of ternary/conventional quantum barriers (QBs) have been used to numerically enhance the efficiency of AlGaN-based ultraviolet light-emitting diode (LED). The performance of LED with GQBs is examined through carrier concentrations, energy band diagrams, radiative recombination, electron and hole flux, internal quantum efficiency (IQE), and emission spectrum. As a function of the operating current density, a considerable reduction in efficiency droop is observed in the device with composition-graded quaternary barriers as compared to the conventional structure. The efficiency droop in case of a conventional LED is ~77% which decreased to ~33% in case of the proposed structure. Moreover, the concentration of electrons and holes across the active region in case of the proposed structure is increased to ~156% and ~44%, respectively.

Opis:
An experimental study on the incident flow angle effects on the vibration behavior was carried out on aluminum tube in parallel triangular tube bundle with P/D ratio of 1.375. Fluid elastic instability is the most fatal mechanism from all the vibration mechanisms and therefore must be dealt with a lot of attention. Experiments were performed on low speed water tunnel with the velocity of water ranges from 0.3 m/s to 0.7 m/s. The experiments were designed in a unique way to study the effects of incident flow angle on the vibration behavior. The monitored tube was mounted flexibly in an array of rigid tubes. The experiments were conducted on a flexible tube for different velocities ranging from 0.3 m/s to 0.7 m/s with different array rotated angles (0 to 90 degrees). It was observed that the vibration level was significantly high at 75 degree configuration as compared to other rotated angle configurations. It was also observed that the damping response is dispersed with all positive values, indicating that there is no instability in the tube.

Aim. This multi-dimensional analysis explores prominent lexico-grammatical features in English used in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The research focuses on the linguistic variation in editorials in Saudi English newspapers. The study’s goals were to create a specialised corpus of Saudi English, to determine how Saudi English differs from British English, and to establish Saudi English as an independent form of English, allowing syllabi designers to serve ESP course developers better. Method. Douglas Biber's multi-dimensional analysis (2006), a corpus-based, quantitative, empirical, and comparative technique for studying linguistic variety, was used by the researchers for analysing this language diversity. Quantitative and functional techniques were employed in the research. The authors examined and statistically analysed the acquired data to establish the communicative function of press editorials. Biber’s (2006) tagger was used to tag the data. Then, using the analysis of variance (ANOVA), the linguistic differences between Saudi publications and British newspapers were determined. Results. The results indicate that Saudi Newspaper Editorial (SNE) is more informational, explicit, abstract, and less argumentative than British Newspaper Editorial (BNE). On one dimension, SNE produces non-narrative while BNE produces narrative discourse. Except for D2, the findings of the internal comparison reveal that there are minor variations in the mean score of Saudi newspaper editorials. Saudi Gazette creates a non-narrative discourse on D2, whilst Arab News produces a narrative one. Cognitive value. The findings support the claim that English spoken in Saudi Arabia qualifies as a distinct variation of English.

Stemming plugs are one of the widely used accessory in surface mining operations. Stemming plugs assist conventional stemming material in gas retention and help in better fragmentation and explosive utilization. Effective use of the stemming plugs results in economic benefits and enhance the efficacy of the project. Economic and productive viability of stemming plugs have been conducted in depth by different researchers. Addition of stemming plugs to a new system requires ergonomic challenges for operators conducting drilling and blasting operation. Induction of a newer product in already established system is subject to overall positive feedback. This work investigates ergonomics of three different stemming plugs introduced to a limestone quarry in Pakistan. The stemming plugs were evaluated based on extra time needed, workers feedback, failures during operation, recovery time after failure and number of extra equipment required to carry out the operation. Points based matrix was established with likeliness of each plug and based on overall scores stemming plug 1 was most acceptable followed by stemming plug 3. Stemming plug 2 was disliked by operation and did not reach the level of acceptability of operators. This work will help stemming plug making industry in adapting to best practices by incorporating ergonomics of plugs in designing. Literature shows no previous work on ergonomics of stemming plugs.

Low drug loading efficiency is the limiting factor in the use of pre-fabricated filaments for 3D printing of pharmaceuticals. The aim of present study was to modify the material properties of pre-fabricated filament by incorporating the suitable solubilizing aids in order to enhance the drug loading efficiency. Loratadine was loaded into PVA filaments by using solubilizers (Soluplus®, Sodium lauryl sulphate) and plasticizers (glycerin and Polyethylene glycol-400) and the printability of filaments was investigated. The treated filaments were characterized for morphology and diameter changes, drug content, FTIR and thermal properties and printed into tablets of suitable dimensions. The printed tablets were also characterized for drug assay and drug release. The results have shown that the surface of different drug loaded filaments become rough with almost no change in diameter hence, these filaments remained printable. However, there was 7 to 24 times enhancement in drug content of filaments treated with particularly those pretreated with glycerin and soaked in drug solution containing Soluplus. The printed tablets have also shown almost similar drug content as their precursor filaments and the release followed diffusion mechanism in most of the formulations. The study concludes that the treatment of PVA filament with solubilizer aids has significantly improved the drug loading entrapment without compromising the printability.

This paper’s objective is to design and optimize a force transducer to build a stationary dynamometer that can measure three axes of milling cutting force. To reduce interference error and increase sensitivity, the force transducer's Maltese cross-beam design was optimized. The force transducer's performance depends on three design parameters: the cross-rectangular beam's through-hole length and width, the compliant plate thickness, and the strain, stress, and stiffness of force transducer constructions calculated by ANSYS. The response surface method (RSM) estimates a desired second-order polynomial function for three geometric parameters based on sensitivity, interference error, safety factor, and stiffness. A stationary dynamometer prototype was made with four optimized force transducers and several piezoresistive strain sensors. The developed dynamometer has good linearity, repeatability, and hysteresis, as well as high sensitivities and low cross-sensitivity errors. The reference dynamometer's cutting force measurements were very close to those of the designed dynamometer in the validation test.

Background: The study was conducted in 2017 to know about the effects of militancy on education in the form of dropout from schools, destroyed infrastructure of educational institutions, decrease in literacy rate and to probe out the community perception about education in the context of adverse law and order situation in district Mohmand Agency. The study was significant because Mohmand Agency is the worst terrorist affected area. Objectives: The objectives of the study were examining the factors causing militancy, and to determine the effects of militancy on education in Mohmand Agency. Methodology: For this purpose, 250 sample respondents out of the total population from four selected villages viz Gurbaz, Masood, Sultan Khel and Baro Khel from tehsil Safi and Halimzai were selected. The respondents were randomly interviewed through an interview schedule. Chi-square test was used as statistical instrument to determine the association between education and different factors that cause terrorism. Results: It was found that majority of the respondents were agreed that unemployment, poverty, drone attacks, unidentified Pak-Afghan border were the main factors that caused militancy in the area and had greatly affected the primary and secondary education in the area. Respondents were of the view that brutal activities against Muslims across the globe and presence of NATO forces in the region increased terrorism. Involvement of foreign intelligence agencies in our county and weak national security network to handle terrorist activities properly were the main causes of terrorism. Parents remain worried about their children’s education due to security threats and insufficient schools remaining in the area. Conclusion: It was concluded that due to insecurity, lack of infrastructure and insufficient schools; education in the area under study was greatly affected. The study suggested that bringing of peace and reasonable security measures against militants can rebuild the educational environment in the study area.
