Opis:
The main issue of this article is the question of the social impact of the war against Pyrrhus in Rome. The author analyzes the problem of fear of Pyrrhus (metus Pyrrhicus). The image of Pyrrhus was created based on Greek literary standards. During Pyrrhus’ invasion of Italy, his heroic image was meant to strengthen the respect of the Greek community. In theory, this was to serve the break-up of the Italian federation in Southern Italy. The author of this work notes that the metus Pyrrhicus had real reason to exist. However, its intensity depended primarily on factors that existed after the war with Pyrrhus. The symbolic fear of the king of Epirus grew with the historical course of the Republic. This fear was subject to transformation related to political needs and in such a form it was described in historiography. In addition, metus Pyrrhicus was politically useful in the face of successive wars led by Rome, especially acts of Roman violence, which they allowed.

The institution of ostracism is an object of controversy because of a problem created by the disagreement between Androtion’s and Ps-Aristotle’s statements. A fifteen-century codex Vaticanus Graecus 1144 gives additional evidence that Cleisthenes was the author of the law and that ostracisms was established in 508/7 BC.

Ancient peoples were convinced that honey had therapeutic properties. It was used to treat people and animals. In veterinary practice, honey-based medicines were used mainly for ailing horses. Most frequently, it was used to treat diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems, eye diseases, skin infections and all types of wounds and swellings. Contemporary research has confirmed the therapeutic properties of honey, and many treatments applied in ancient times were characterized by a significant efficiency. Only the dosage of medicines could be a problem, since the amount of specific components in natural substances is variable.

The origin of the mother of the Iranian šāhānšāh Wahrām V (420-438), son and successor of Yazdgird I (399-420), is, in scholar literature, treated marginally. The literary source which mentions Wahrām’s Jewish maternal background is the Šahrestānīhā ī Ērānšahr (‘The Provincial Capitals of Ērānšahr’). These considerations are an attempt to ‘recover the memory' of Šīšīnduxt, the Jewish women at the Iranian court, by methodical re-analyzing of the historical texts.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate how Greek symposion in the Archaic and early Classical period developed the educational function. Through the efforts of Emperor Maurice and king Khosrow II a period of peace between the Roman Empire and Sasanian Iran reigned in the early seventh c. When Maurice died in rebellion of Fokas in 602, Khosrow attacked the Roman Empire, taking Mesopotamia, Syria, Palestine with Jerusalem and Egypt, the granary of the empire. Thousands of inhabitants of Alexandria were killed by Persians in 619. For the first time since the Achaemenid age Egypt belonged to the Persian empire and Khosrow appointed a certain Saraleneozan marzaban of Egypt. Iranian elite was aware of history of Egypt. We know these events thanks to the Shahname of Ferdowsi, the tents-c. Iranian national epos. Persian occupation of Egypt lasted for ten years but many cultural patterns brought by the Persians remained in Egypt for a long time well into the Arab rule.

The plants of the nightshade family, including henbane, were already known in ancient times. This plant was widely used in medicine and veterinary. It was also used in religious ceremonies and as a poison. Knowledge of the toxicity of henbane was common, even popular encyclopedias warned against its use. Nevertheless its analgesic properties were appreciated although opium or mandrake was used much more readily and the use of henbane was tried to be limited. It was used more widely in the late antiquity and in the Byzantine Empire, although in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire it has lost its importance because magical properties were put down to it combining it with witches and their practices.

The aim of the article is to investigate the question of shamanism among the Scythians on the basis of Herodotus’ description of the Scythian ritual purification. Analysis of the source: Dig. I 3.1, does not allow readers to conclude that the nature of the lex was an “agreement”. Dig. I 3.1 seemed to refer to sponsio, because – according to R. Sohm – it has evolved from the religious act. I believe that the Old Roman sponsio “imposed” by Papinianus in Book one of the Definitiones on the Republican lex was to emphasize its importance in Roman law. From Dig. I 3.1 does not follow that the lex was a “contract” between citizens and the state. In my view, an intention in using the term sponsio in Dig. I 3.1 was to emphasize the need to comply with an order under the will of the legislator, even when it was not the same people at comitia centuriata.

Rabies is one of the diseases longest known to man. The oldest records concerning rabies date back to the ancient Mesopotamia, although the disease was also known in Ancient Egypt. It was mentioned in legal and medical texts meaning that it must have been a matter of serious concern back at the time. Medics in Greece and Rome also tried to establish the disease’s aetiology, symptoms and methods of treatment; however, despite all efforts, before the time of Louis Pasteur and his research, nobody was able to even understand the mechanism of rabies, let alone develop effective methods for its prevention.

The description of the murder of Cleitus the Black by Alexander the Great included in Historia Adversus Paganos by Orosius was modeled on Justin’s Epitome. There are significant differences between the two descriptions, even though Justin was the only source for Orosius. Orosius definitely modified the story to agree with the apologetic nature of his work.

The aim of this paper is to compare two of the longest passages about the death of Medusa at hands of Perseus in the Latin literature: in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Lucan’s Civil War. The article shows a correspondence between the image of Perseus and (especially) Medusa in both ancient texts. The main difference is a role of those heroes in discussed epic poems: Gorgon in the Methamorphoses is an valuable character because of its transformation (from a beautiful maiden into a monster), in The Civil War the story about origins of snakes in Libya and the political context connected with historical events are more important.

The article deals with the issue of an isolated view in the medieval historiography of the Latin cultural circle, the identification of Magyars as Massagetae. Operating within the established practice of their age, the litterati tried to determine the role played by emerging ethnic groups by applying methods based on principles of etymology and analogy. Thus they identified names of those ethnic units with the ethnonyms known to them from the Bible and ancient literature. In dealing with emerging ethnic units, earlier unknown, they followed the principle of the variability of names of the attested ethnic units. This principle was applied to Hungarians credited with emerging from Scythia and referred to in medieval sources as a gens ignota / exter(n)a. The identification of Hungarians with earlier known ethnic units was strengthened by terms used to describe them as barbari, pagani, infideles.

In Roman Africa of the second c. AD, especially in the province Africa Proconsularis, a special form of provincial Roman art appeared: figural mosaic. These mosaics, depicting mythological or everyday life scenes, were displayed either in the context of public buildings, such as amphitheatres, or private estates (villae) of influential land owners. Those with representations of land owners and their wives draw particular attention. These people were shown mostly at leisure. The paper aims to show that the way African land owners and their wives are represented alludes to the imperial, heroic and even divine iconography (Venus) through the choice of topics, poses or costumes.

The article presents Ashdod and Ashkelon, two harbor cities from the Herodian period (37 BCE–70 CE), located on the south Levantine’s coast. The topic is depicted using the examples of the imported fine and utilitarian wares dated to Early Roman, in specific Herodian, period. Ashdod and Ashkelon were cities located nearby, with very similar history up to the Hellenistic period. After this time their similarities disappeared and the importance in the region changed. This issue is well presented in the pottery assemblage and imports from the whole Mediterranean world.
