Opis:
Biobank Laboratory of the University of Lodz is a unit in the organizational structure of the Department of Molecular Biophysics at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection. It was established in 2014 as one of the results of the TESTOPLEK project. One of the main goals of the unit is to collect and share biological material of human origin and related clinical and survey data. Moreover, Biobank Laboratory conducts work in the field of genetics and molecular biology on human biological material. Biobank Laboratory gathers over 40.000 samples such as DNA, FFPE, saliva, together with their data. Data about collections is available for researchers in directories e.g. BBMRI-ERIC Directory 4.0. Since 2014, the unit belongs to the national Consortium BBMRI.pl, and since 2017 it executes a project entitled Research Infrastructure for Biobanks and Biomolecular Resources BBMRI-ERIC, co-creating the Polish Network of Biobanks. Biobank Laboratory is focused on cooperation with domestic and foreign scientific institutions and medical units, as well as entities from the local, business and public sector.

Aim. One of the challenges of the labour market in Poland is to match competences adequately to the needs of employers and to enable future employees, including students, to acquire these competences before they start their careers. The aim of the research was to answer the questions, which methods of developing competencies are known to the students, which are used by them and how do they assess their effectiveness. Methods. The research was carried out by mix-mode method, using quantitative (CAWI, N=352) and qualitative (IDI, N=10) surveys, and the respondents were students of the University of Lodz. Results. The results indicate that the best known and most commonly used methods of developing competencies are: individual self-education, classes at university, professional work, internships, apprenticeships, voluntary work, trainings, workshops, courses. As regards the evaluation of the effectiveness of the indicated methods of developing competencies, the students considered professional work to be the most effective method. Moreover, the results indicate that each of the methods of developing competencies may be effective, and the effectiveness depends on several factors. Conclusion. Therefore, it seems crucial not only for students to know and use various methods of developing competencies, but also for universities to ensure high quality activities, so that they effectively support the development of students' competencies and respond to the needs of the labour market.

The paper addresses the issue of culture shock and the challenges met in the process of adaptation to a new culture, as experienced by international students studying in Poland. Until recently, Poland has not been regarded as a very attractive educational market. Poland joining the EU in 2004 contributed to a surge in various types of migrant arriving in the country, including international students. However, for the last few years the number of young people coming to Poland in order to study has been growing steadily. Yet, this growth does not mean that state, local or university authorities have any knowledge of how to resolve possible future conflicts which might and often do arise between overseas students and the society which receives them, or of how to help these students with their everyday problems. This dilemma is the result of a lack of studies regarding this group. Previous studies regarding migrants in Poland were only slightly focused on international students. In spite of the fact that international students are migrants, they differ significantly from other types of migrant – mostly those who are in Poland for economic or political reasons. The aim of the research presented in this article was therefore to carry out an initial exploration of the problems which this group encounters both at university and in society. The research was carried out in two stages with medical students in Łódź. The first stage was a paper-based questionnaire completed by international students studying at the Medical University of Łódź (N=74). The second stage involved three focus-group interviews conducted with some of these students.

Biblioteka oficjalnie istnieje od 1 lutego 2005, gromadzi publikacje z języka bułgarskiego, chorwackiego, serbskiego i literatury słoweńskiej, różne inne źródła dotyczące przekładoznawstwa, językoznawstwa, teorii literatury i historii krajów południowosłowiańskich. Zbiory biblioteki są dostępne dla pracowników, absolwentów studiów podyplomowych i doktorantów Filologii Słowiańskiej Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W ciągu kilku miesięcy biblioteka najprawdopodobniej przestanie działać jako oddzielna jednostka i stanie się częścią jednej wielkiej biblioteki wydziałowej.
The purpose of this article is to characterize the activities and the collection of books of the Slavonic Studies Library, which is a division of the Polish Studies Library of the Philological Faculty of the Lodz University. The author presents a short outline of the library’s history and its profile and collections. The library has officially existed since February 1st, 2005, and has gathered Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian, and Slovene literature and various other publications concerning translating studies, linguistics, theory of literature and history of the South Slavic countries. The library’s collections are accessible to the staff, graduate, postgraduate and doctoral students of the Slavonic Studies Department of the Lodz University. In several months, the library will most likely stop functioning as a separate unit and will become a part of one, large departmental library.

Numerous researchers have noticed the need for better measurement of students’ stated learning outcomes (Conole & Warburton, 2005). One of the reasons is the increasing number of university students, which has led to the necessity of finding an efficient form of assessment. One of the ways of testing, which is rapidly gaining popularity among academic staff, is computer-assisted assessment (CAA). The aim of the following paper is to briefly discuss the notion of CAA and the observed positive impacts it has exerted on the testing process at the Institute of English Studies at the University of Lodz, Poland, and to consider several pedagogical implications related to the use of this type of assessment within the institution. The findings were observed by the author of the paper and are not based on empirical data.

W 2018 roku Katedra Rachunkowości Wydziału Zarządzania Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego będzie obchodzić 70-lecie swojego istnienia pt. Ludzie i ich dokonania. Z tej okazji w dniu 12.10.2017 roku w Pałacu A. Biedermanna w Łodzi odbyła się inauguracja obchodów jubileuszowych, która stała się okazją do przypomnienia początków i kolejnych etapów jej rozwoju. Niniejsze opracowanie zawiera krótki rys historyczny dotyczący najważniejszych sfer działalności naukowej, dydaktycznej i współpracy z praktyką, na przestrzeni całego okresu jej funkcjonowania. Przypomniano kluczowe postacie, które przyczyniły się do powstania, rozwoju i sukcesów Katedry. Ponadto przedstawiona w nim została relacja z przebiegu tego wydarzenia, w której przywołano główne wątki z wystąpień zaproszonych gości. W inauguracji obchodów jubileuszowych Katedry wzięło udział ponad 50 osób.
Department of Accounting at Faculty of Management, University of Lodz will celebrate 70th anniversary in 2018 entitled People and their achievements. The official inauguration of the Jubilee took place at Biedermann’s Palace in Lodz on 12th October 2017. This event was an opportunity to bring up memories and to remind the roots of the Department of Accounting and subsequent stages in its development. This report summarizes a brief historical overview of its most important activities and achievements in the field of science, education and cooperation with business. Key people, who contributed to the foundation, development and successes of the Department, have been recalled. This elaboration presents also the report from the event mentioned above, that refers to the main thesis of speeches of invited guests. Over 50 people took part in the inauguration of the Department of Accounting’s Jubilee.

W artykule przedstawiono rozwój nauczania geoinformacji na Wydziale Nauk Geograficznych Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego oraz ofertę edukacyjną wydziału obejmującą przedmioty związane z GIS w roku akademickim 2015/2016, którą przeprowadzono na podstawie: siatek godzin kierunków prowadzonych na WNG UŁ, efektów kształcenia kierunków pod kątem wykorzystania GIS, aktualnych planów zajęć oraz konsultacji z koordynatorami przedmiotów. Przeanalizowano wszystkie programy studiów prowadzonych na WNG UŁ - geografia, geomonitoring, gospodarka przestrzenna, turystyka i rekreacja oraz geoinformacja - pod kątem liczby godzin oraz liczby punktów ECTS. Na podstawie efektów kształcenia oraz siatki godzin w badanym roku akademickim, przedstawiono zróżnicowanie oferty edukacyjnej. Wyniki badań wskazały, że najszerszą ofertę edukacyjną w zakresie przedmiotów związanych z GIS ma kierunek geoinformacja, następnie gospodarka przestrzenna 1 stopnia. Pozostałe kierunki mają bardzo małą liczbę tego typu godzin dydaktycznych w programie studiów. Jedynie geoinformacja, gospodarka przestrzenna oraz turystyka i rekreacja mają odniesienie do szeroko rozumianej geoinformacji w efektach kształcenia.
The article presents the development of geoinformation education at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences at the University of Lodz and the educational offer of the faculty concerning GIS-related subjects in the year 2015/2016, which was analysed based on: schedules for majors at the WNG U£, the learning outcomes concerning GIS usage, current curriculums and consultations with subject coordinators. All curriculums for majors at the WNG U£ were analysed, namely geography, geomonitoring, spatial economy, tourism and recreation, and geoinformation, according to their size and ECTS points. The diversity of the educational offer was presented based on the outcomes and schedules in the academic year under study. The results have shown that geoinformation has the widest offer of GIS-related subjects, followed by undergraduate spatial economy. Other majors include only a small number of such classes. Only geoinformarion, spatial economy, and tourism and recreation include references to geoinformation in their learning outcomes.

The topic of this analysis is the role performed by the Historical Institute (from 1970: Institute of History) at the University of Lodz during the People’s Republic of Poland era. In view of the unsatisfactory state of research both regarding the history of historiography and the organisation and development of Polish historical sciences the author based his analysis on three aspects of the functioning of the Institute: conditions for pursuing scientific undertakings, the organisation of the Institute against the backdrop of other academic institutes in Poland, and the participation of the Institute staff in General Conventions of Polish Historians. The foundation of this, by definition incomplete, study demonstrates the relatively substantial involvement of the Institute historians in Polish scientific life in the wake of World War II as a consequence of, i.a. the political part assigned to it by the authorities as well as a comparatively considerable conflict within the historical milieu, the uneven progress of research in particular domains of history, and concentration on economic and social history. The decline of the part performed by the Institute, and its status, at the turn of the 1940s was due to the migration of particular staff members to other academic centres and the susceptibility of Lodz-based researchers to ideological pressure. The gradual rise of the scientific potential of the titular Institute after October 1956 was disturbed by the events of March 1968, whose outcome encompassed changes affecting the staff to a degree unique among all academic centres, a decline of research, and political pacification. In 1970 these consequences signified a reorganisation of the Institute, which resulted in a temporary derangement of its functioning and a further waning of a conducive scientific ambiance and co-operation. The deterioration of the Institute during this period became increasingly discernible in the course of successive General Conventions of Polish Historians. The presence of Lodz-based historians – distinct at the 1948 and 1958 Conventions – become once again conspicuous during the 1980s, including the marked (for obvious reasons) reappearance at the Convention held in Lodz in 1989. The outcome of the relatively undisturbed progress of the Institute during the 1970s and 1980s – also the result of the Institute’s considerable politicisation – included a gradual growth of the research potential, whose unhampered course became possible from 1989 on.
Przedmiotem analizy jest rola odgrywana przez Instytut Historyczny (od 1970 r. Historii) Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (IH UŁ) w okresie Polski Ludowej. Wobec niezadowalającego stanu badań zarówno w odniesieniu do dziejów historiografii, jak i organizacji i rozwoju polskiej nauki historycznej autor przyjął za podstawę swojej analizy trzy aspekty funkcjonowania IH UŁ: warunki prowadzenia działalności naukowej, organizację Instytutu na tle innych instytutów uniwersyteckich w Polsce, udział pracowników IH UŁ w Powszechnych Zjazdach Historyków Polskich. Z tej – z założenia niepełnej – podstawy analizy wynika stosunkowo znaczny udział historyków IH UŁ w ogólnopolskim życiu naukowym w pierwszych latach po wojnie, wynikający m.in. z politycznej roli nadanej mu przez władze, ale również stosunkowo znaczne skonfliktowanie środowiska, nierównomierny rozwój badań w poszczególnych dziedzinach historii, koncentracja na historii gospodarczej i społecznej. Osłabienie roli i pozycji IH UŁ nastąpiło w latach pięćdziesiątych w związku z migracją części pracowników do innych ośrodków i podatnością łódzkich badaczy na presję ideologiczną. Stopniowe wzmacnianie się potencjału naukowego IH UŁ nastąpiło po październiku 1956 r., dzięki mniejszej ingerencji władz w organizację Instytutu i w treść badań. Zostało ono przerwane przez wydarzenia marca ’68, których efektem były największe, w stosunku do innych ośrodków uniwersyteckich, zmiany kadrowe w Instytucie, jego osłabienie merytoryczne, pacyfikacja polityczna. W ślad za tym poszła reorganizacja IH UŁ w 1970 r., co skutkowało przejściową dezorganizacją jego funkcjonowania i dalszym osłabieniem atmosfery pracy i współpracy naukowej. Słabość IH UŁ widać w tym okresie wyraźnie na kolejnych zjazdach historyków polskich. Obecność łodzian na poszczególnych zjazdach, wyraźna w 1948 i 1958 r., zaczyna być bardziej widoczna dopiero w latach osiemdziesiątych, z mocnym (także z naturalnych przyczyn) powrotem na zjeździe w Łodzi w 1989 r. Efektem stosunkowo spokojnego rozwoju IH UŁ w latach siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych, będących także rezultatem jego znacznego upolitycznienia, było stopniowe powiększanie potencjału badawczego, którego dalszy już swobodny rozwój był możliwy od 1989 r.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zakresu uczestnictwa, założeń formalnych i zasad funkcjonowania programu edukacyjnego Unii Europejskiej Socrates/Erasmus na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim, uczelni, która zajmuje czołowe miejsce w Polsce wśród tzw. liderów Socratesa. Autorka przedstawia opinie studentów Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, którzy w latach 1998-2000, w ramach tego programu, podjęli studia w zagranicznych szkołach wyższych. Opinie byłych stypendystów programu Socrates, zebrane w trakcie badania przeprowadzonego od marca do czerwca 2001 r., zostały podzielone na trzy grupy, odpowiadające trzem etapom uczestnictwa w programie: (a) opinie o pierwszym kontakcie z programem; (b) opinie o pobycie na zagranicznej uczelni partnerskiej; (c) opinie o rezultatach wymiany stypendialnej w ramach programu. Badania wskazują, że Uniwersytet Łódzki z roku na rok nie tylko zdobywa coraz więcej miejsc stypendialnych, ale także podpisuje kontrakty stypendialne z coraz większą liczbą krajów i uczelni biorących udział w programie; zainteresowanie programem wśród łódzkich studentów systematycznie wzrasta, a ci, którzy zostali jego stypendystami pozytywnie oceniają funkcjonowanie tego programu na łódzkiej uczelni oraz swoje w nim uczestnictwo. W konkluzji autorka przedstawia postulaty, które należy spełnić, by jeszcze bardziej zwiększyć zainteresowanie programem, ułatwić studentom korzystanie z programu i polepszyć jego funkcjonowanie nie tylko na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim, ale także we wszystkich polskich uczelniach, które uczestniczą w tym programie edukacyjnym.
The aim of the article is to present the scope of participation, official guidelines and rules of operation for the EU educational scheme Socrates/Erasmus at the University of Łódź (UL, Uniwersytet Łódzki), one of the top ‘Socrates Leaders’ in Poland. The author presents opinions expressed by students of UL who undertook studies at overseas universities in 1998-2000 under the Programme. Opinions collected from former Socrates students during a study conducted from March till June 2005 were divided into three groups corresponding to three stages of participation: (a) opinions on the initial exposure to the Programme, (b) opinions on the stay at the partner university in another country, (c) opinions about the outcomes of the student exchange under the Programme. Research shows that the University of Lodz does not only gain more placements from year to year but also signs exchange contracts with an increasing number of participating countries and universities. UL students are increasingly interested in the Programme and those who won a Socrates scholarship positively view their participation and the performance of the Programme at UL. In conclusion the author presents postulates which should be met to further increase interest in the Programme, facilitate students’ participation and improve its performance not only at the University of Lodz but also in all participating HE institutions in Poland.

The article describes the basic methodological issues of the elearning and their function in the preparation of the online library training for University of Łódź students. Supported with the results of the training evaluation survey, the students’ attitude to the course and their own skills assessment of the library service knowledge was characterized. In conclusion, the demands for adjustments of the training to the needs of the academic youths have been made.
W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe zagadnienia metodyczne e-learningu i ich wykorzystanie w przygotowaniu szkolenia bibliotecznego online dla studentów Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Na podstawie wyników ankiety ewaluacyjnej e-szkolenia scharakteryzowano podejście studentów do kursu oraz ich ocenę umiejętności własnych w zakresie korzystania z usług bibliotecznych. We wnioskach zawarte zostały postulaty dotyczące dalszego przystosowywania szkolenia do potrzeb młodzieży akademickiej.

The ability to self-learning should be shaped from the very beginning of school education. It is a very important skill, because it is used in higher education, where the learner explores and analyzes the problems in cognitive purposes. According to the results of empirical research, conducted by the authors among the students of University of Lodz since 2008, students are becoming more and more erratic, need contacts with academics, have a lower level of motivation to self-study. The research also shows that the percentage of students who don't have the ability to self-learning is rising. Students are neither prepared to study at university nor to be active self-educators in the later stages of life. The purpose of the paper is to indicate the need for changes in the system of higher education, which are necessary to make students active self-learners who will be ready to develop goals, methods and techniques of learning. Those changes should be about creating conditions for students to develop their ability to self-learning and preparing them to self-development in later stages of life. The theoretical part of the article was based on literature studies. The authors used books, articles and internet publications about self-learning and Polish universities. The empirical part of the paper contains the results of empirical research conducted by the survey technique. These research were carried out between 2008 and 2012. The respondents were students of the Faculty of Management, University of Lodz.

The article presents the results of research carried out in 2015 – before and after the presidential elections on a group of students of selected fields of the University of Łódź. The main objective of the study was to diagnose the political attitudes of students. The results were also confronted with the results of various studies carried out on national representative samples of the young generation of Poles. The study confirmed the trend of the nationwide research – the turn of young people to conservative orientation, support for right-wing parties and, on the other hand, a significant political non-involvement.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w 2015 r. przed i po wyborach prezydenckich na grupie studentów wybranych kierunków Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Głównym celem badania była diagnoza postaw politycznych studentów. Uzyskane wyniki zostały następnie skonfrontowane z wynikami różnych badań ogólnopolskich, przeprowadzonych na reprezentatywnych próbach młodego pokolenia Polaków. Badanie potwierdziło tendencje z badań reprezentatywnych: z jednej strony ‒ o dokonującym się przesunięciu orientacji politycznych młodych ludzi w kierunku poglądów konserwatywnych, popierających partie prawicowe, z drugiej − znaczącą ich apolityczność.

The article is devoted to the presentation and characteristics of the Ceraneum – the Waldemar Ceran Research Centre for the History and Culture of the Mediterranean Area and South-East Europe, which has been operating at the University of Łódź since 2011. The author focuses on the importance of this Centre for the development of Byzantine-Slavic studies in Poland and in the world in general, as well as its organisational structure, financing methods and, above all, scientific and publishing efforts. He also does not neglect the public and didactic activity the Ceraneum undertakes. The aim is to indicate the importance of establishing similar research centres and their methods of organisation, with particular emphasis on their role in internationalising the achievements of Polish science and building strong and effective cooperation among scholars from different countries.

As growth of information society was stimulated by low price of technology and low price of access to broadband Internet, all institutions had to accept the fact that their existence on the Internet is crucial for their further existence. Even universities had to do something more than just publish a website. They had to embrace social media. This article presents a case study on students of Econ-omy and Sociology Department of University of Lodz, showing impact of social media on their decisions on enrolment.

Department of Meteorology and Climatology University of Łódź was created almost 45 years ago. The creator and the many years' head of Department was Professor Stanisław Zych. The oldest research trends were: urban climate and bioclimate, human biometeorology, regional climatology of different areas of Poland, fluctuations and long-term changes of climate. In subsequent years beside above-mentioned it was started to develop such trends us: spatial differentiation and variability of climate (mainly precipitations), relationships between circulation and long-term variability of climate conditions in Poland and in Europe, topoclimatic differentiation in selected field conditions.
Zakład Meteorologii i Klimatologii UL powstał blisko 45 lat temu. Twórcą i wieloletnim kierownikiem zakładu był prof. dr Stanisław Zych. Najstarsze nurty badawcze to m. in.: klimat i bioklimat obszarów zurbanizowanych, biometeorologia człowieka, klimatologia regionalna różnych obszarów Polski, wahania i długookresowe zmiany klimatu. W ostatnich latach publikacje naukowe dotyczą także: przestrzennego zróżnicowania zmienności elementów klimatu, głównie opadów atmosferycznych, związków między cyrkulacją atmosferyczną a wieloletnią zmiennością warunków klimatycznych w Polsce i w Europie, zróżnicowania topoklimatycznego terenów o urozmaiconej rzeźbie.

Objectives The number of craniectomies and the consequent reconstructive procedures has grown during the past decades. Cranial defects and methods of their repair could have some influence on work capability of the patients and their employability. Material and Methods The authors analyzed a group of 112 patients with cranial defects treated in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland, in the course of the katamnestic period longer than 6 months after reconstructive operation, and observed them between February 2008 and February 2015. Their work capability and employment were compared, all the patients were interviewed concerning the reasons for not working according to the Social Insurance Institution predication procedure. Results Before the cranioplasty, all the patients were capable of working without limitations according to biological criteria and 89 of them were employed. Twenty-three not working people consisted of 6 pupils, 7 retired and 10 not working for other reasons. During the period between the craniectomy and the cranioplasty, 88 patients were capable of working and only 2 were employed. After the reconstruction, 93 were capable of working without limitations and 16 – with limitations. Forty-seven were employed during the period of the follow-up, the rest of patients consisted of 2 pupils, 13 retired and 50 not working for various reasons. Conclusions Cranioplasty is a very important factor contributing to return to work. This outcome may be seen as having a great social value and be added to the functions of cranial repair as protective, esthetic and normalizing the intracranial pressure previously described in the literature. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted library activities. Libraries faced with a choice which services they can safely offer to their users to ensure that the readers always have access to the information they need. The article presents the functioning of the University of Lodz Library (BUŁ) during the pandemic. It presents the applied solutions and services adapted to the epidemiological situation, which allowed readers of the University of Lodz Library use its resources in a satisfactory and safe manner.

Historical Institute (IH) of University of Lodz was established on 24 June 1948. The first years of its activity took place during the Stalinism period. The stuff and students were subjected to propaganda and were engaged in different political actions. Researches and didactics were imposed into methodology of Marxism-Leninism. The students of IH articulated their objection towards such practices in 1956 and therefore in next years, took place many positive changes. One of them was the possibility of making trips to archives and libraries in western countries. Unfortunately, in 1968 the Institute experienced many political upheavals. The consequences of anti-Semitic campaign, which were then set off, was dismissal from work and emigrating from Poland of four employees of IH. During next years, functioning of the Institute and life of the students were subjected to strong political pressure again. Its expression were e.g. working- -class practices of first year students. The situation in the Institute changed only when in 1980 Independent Self-governing Trade Union “Solidarity” was created. The students and employees started to fight for their issues. The former ones took part in nearly month-long sit-down strike (January–February 1981). After the introduction of martial law two students were interned, besides the stuff and students were forbidden to conduct any independent activities. Some of them however got engaged in underground activity. The legal activity started again only in May 1988. In this time the students government on the IH was created. The students and employees joined into the transitions which took place in 1989. One of adjuncts became even the Member of Parliament (so-called contractual Parliament).
Instytut Historyczny (IH) Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego został utworzony 24 czerwca 1948 r. Pierwsze lata jego działalności przypadły na okres stalinizmu. Kadra i studenci zostali wtedy poddani propagandzie i byli angażowani w różne akcje polityczne, a badaniom i dydaktyce narzucono metodologię marksistowsko-leninowską. Swój sprzeciw wobec tych praktyk studenci IH wyrazili w 1956 r. i dlatego w kolejnych latach nastąpiło wiele korzystnych zmian. Jedną z nich była możliwość wyjazdów pracowników do archiwów i bibliotek w krajach zachodnich. Niestety w 1968 r. Instytut doświadczył wielu politycznych wstrząsów. Następstwem uruchomionej wtedy kampanii antysemickiej było zwolnienie z pracy i wyjazd z Polski czterech pracowników IH. W kolejnych latach funkcjonowanie Instytutu i życie studentów ponownie poddano silnej presji politycznej. Jej wyrazem były np. obowiązkowe praktyki robotnicze dla studentów I roku. Dopiero gdy w 1980 r. powstał Niezależny Samorządny Związek Zawodowy „Solidarność” w Instytucie sytuacja się zmieniła. Studenci i pracownicy zaczęli walczyć o swoje interesy. Ci pierwsi uczestniczyli nawet w trwającym blisko miesiąc strajku okupacyjnym (styczeń–luty 1981 r.). Po wprowadzeniu stanu wojennego dwóch studentów zostało internowanych, poza tym pracownikom i studentom zabroniono prowadzenia wszelkiej niezależnej działalności. Niektórzy z nich podjęli jednak aktywność w podziemiu. Jawna działalność niezależna została na nowo podjęta dopiero w maju 1988 r. Powstał wtedy w IH samorząd studencki. Studenci i pracownicy włączyli się też w przemiany, które nastąpiły w 1989 r. Jeden z adiunktów został nawet posłem na Sejm (tzw. Sejm kontraktowy).

Opis:
The aim of this article is to discuss the selected issues connected with the policy of gathering and selecting collections in the Library of the Lodz University. The analysis includes particularly the rules of gathering and selec-ting a legal deposit copy, collections research and management of the journal collections at the example of their gathering. The basic issue undertaken in this consideration refers to the policy of gathering collections and factors which de-termine it. These reflections have been embedded in three subheadings which explain the rules of work in the Library of the Lodz University.
Celem artykułu jest omówienie wybranych zagadnień związanych z polityką gromadzenia i selekcji zbiorów w Bibliotece Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. W szczególności analizie poddane zostały zasady gromadzenia i selekcji egzemplarza obowiązkowego, segmentacja zbiorów biblioteki oraz zarządzanie zbiorem czasopism na przykładzie ich gromadzenia. Podstawowa kwestia jaka przyświeca podjętym w tym artykule rozważaniom, odnosi się do polityki gromadzenia zbiorów i czynników, które je determinują. Całość rozważań osadzona została w trzech śródtytułach, które przybliżają specyfikę pracy Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego.

Opis:
The paper contains theoretical issues, particularly about adults education and information literacy courses for students. Information literacy courses should develop qualifications of scientific information searching, efficient using of spiders and searchers, which are included in OPACs, data bases, e–publication services or digital libraries. The process of the courses preparing and conducting is presented. The paper ends with the results of the short evaluating questionnaire and its conclusions.
W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia teoretyczne opisujące specyfikę nauczania dorosłych oraz zajęć z zakresu kompetencji informacyjnych. Są to zajęcia mające na celu rozwijanie umiejętności budowania zapytań wyszukiwawczych, sprawnego posługiwania się wyszukiwarkami, znajdującymi się m. in. w katalogach OPAC, bazach danych i serwisach e-wydawnictw czy bibliotekach cyfrowych. Zaprezentowano proces przygotowania poszczególnych zajęć i ich scenariusze. W końcowej części artykułu zawarte zostały wyniki krótkie-go kwestionariusza oceny jakości szkoleń, przeprowadzonego na potrze-by Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, w którym studenci ocenili zajęcia, a także płynące z nich wnioski.

Opis:
In current research on the subject, three dominant functions of advertising can be pointed out. These are: to inform, to persuade or to remind a recipient about the product. However, watching modern commercials in the media evokes a question about this typology being sufficient enough to cover the full spectrum of the commercial industry. The main goal of the article is to test the attitudes towards commercials in students in their junior year of the Journalism and Social Communication degree at the University of Łodź. This probe is exceptionally valuable, since many of these people in years to come will become involved in creating this type of broadcast by graduating with a “Advertising, Design and Visual Communication” major at our university. The experiment has been divided into three tiers, showing different types of TV spots in two of them. Doing this has enabled us to answer the question if watching these types of broadcasts can influence the attitude towards commercials and its functions on viewers.

On 4th March 2016, President of NIK Krzysztof Kwiatkowski, during the inauguration of the postgraduate studies “Legal Aspects of State Auditing” at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Łódź, gave a lecture dedicated to the preventive function of NIK’s audits. NIK’s audits have a preventive function because they both aim at establishing irregularities, and disclose the reasons thereof. The conclusions formulated by NIK in post audit statements are implemented not only by the auditees, but they provide guidance for other entities as well. In his lecture, President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski referred to de lege ferenda proposals, i.e. proposals to amend the law, which he called prevention of the highest level.

W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze fakty z bogatej biografii prof. Stefana Banasiaka, historyka historii najnowszej i wieloletniego dyrektora Instytutu Historii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Stefan Banasiak pochodził z ziemi łęczyckiej. Urodził się w Topoli Katowej w rodzinie chłopskiej. Kilka lat po drugiej wojnie światowej ukończył Uniwersytet Łódzki, uzyskując tytuł magistra nauk społecznych. Od 1953 r. rozpoczął pracę jako asystent na tej uczelni, kontynuując jednocześnie studia na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. Po uzyskaniu tytułu magistra rozwijał karierę naukową i dydaktyczną na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim. Uzyskał kolejne stopnie zaawansowania naukowego: w 1961 r. został doktorem, a w 1967 r. doktorem habilitowanym. W 1978 r. został profesorem nadzwyczajnym, a w 1990 r. profesorem zwyczajnym. W latach 1968–1970 był zastępcą dyrektora, następnie w latach 1970–1978 dyrektorem Instytutu Historii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Osiągnął znaczący dorobek w badaniach naukowych, zwłaszcza w zakresie problematyki powojennych przesiedleń ludności niemieckiej i działalności osadniczej na Ziemiach Zachodnich i Północnych. Specjalizował się także w historii regionalnej, pisząc wiele publikacji z zakresu historii społecznej i politycznej Łodzi i innych ośrodków regionu łódzkiego. Miał duże osiągnięcia w kształceniu kadry naukowej historyków (wypromował ponad 120 magistrów i 7 doktorów). Działał w wielu organizacjach i stowarzyszeniach. Pogrzeb profesora Banasiaka odbył się 4 IV 2018 r. na cmentarzu przy ulicy Ogrodowej w Łodzi.
The article presents the most important facts from the abundant biography of professor Stefan Banasiak, a historian of recent history and for a number of years the director of the Institute of History at the University of Lodz. Stefan Banasiak came from the Łęczyca region. He was born in Topola Katowa in a peasant family. A few years after the Second World War he graduated from the University of Lodz with a degree in social sciences. From 1953, he started working as an assistant at this university, while continuing his studies at the University of Warsaw. After obtaining a master's degree, he developed a scientific and didactic career at the University of Lodz. He obtained further levels of academic advancement: in 1961 he became a doctor and in 1967 he received a postdoctoral degree. In 1978, he was appointed an associate professor, and in 1990 became a full professor. In the years 1968–1970 he was deputy director, then in the years 1970–1978 the director of the Institute of History of the University of Lodz. He obtained significant achievements in scientific research, especially the problems of post-war resettlement of German population and settlement activity in the Western and Northern Territories. He also specialized in regional history, writing many publications on social and political history of Łódź and other centers of the Lodz region. He had great achievements in educating the scientific staff of historians (he promoted over 120 MAs and 7 doctors). He was active in many organizations and associations. The funeral of professor Banasiak took place on April 4, 2018 at the cemetery in Łódź in Ogrodowa Street.

This paper aims at highlighting the role of higher education institutions in Lodz in the regeneration of urban space and in building the international brand of a university town. Higher education institutions in Lodz are managers and administrators of many historic buildings that testify to the identity of the city and its rich historic legacy. Besides renovating these buildings, universities provide them with new functions by opening them up to local and international communities. Innovation in regenerating cultural heritage may become a distinguishing feature of both Lodz universities and international city’s brand strategy. The key challenge to Lodz is to complete the global regeneration of a post-industrial city in social, cultural, economic, and spatial dimensions using EU funds.

Tematyka dostępności stron internetowych cieszy się coraz większą popularnością wśród specjalistów w dziedzinie produktów cyfrowych. Na przestrzeni lat świadomość społeczna dotycząca potrzeb osób zmagających się z niepełnosprawnościami i innymi utrudnieniami znacznie wzrosła, co przekłada się na chęć tworzenia rozwiązań odpowiadających tymże potrzebom. Celem artykułu było zbadanie stopnia dostępności cyfrowej strony internetowej Wydziału Filologicznego Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Posłużono się metodą techniczną. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że analizowana strona jest dostępna cyfrowo w średnim stopniu. Pomimo spełniania wielu podstawowych kryteriów, brakuje na niej wielu ważnych rozwiązań ułatwiających korzystanie osobom z niepełnosprawnościami oraz seniorom.
The topic of web accessibility is becoming increasingly popular among digital product specialists. Over the years, public awareness of the needs of people struggling with disabilities and other handicaps has increased significantly, which translates into a desire to create solutions to meet those needs. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of accessibility of the digital website of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Lodz. A technical method was used. The study showed that the analyzed website is digitally accessible to a medium degree. Despite meeting many basic criteria, it lacks a number of important solutions to facilitate the use of people with disabilities and seniors.
