The author examines Gilson’s development of the term “theologism” from his 1937 The Unity of Philosophical Experience and his 1938 Reason and Revelation in the Middle Ages. This term is important for understanding Gilson’s developing doctrine on Christian philosophy. The treatment of it helps to show how Gilson’s understanding of Christian philosophy does not entail the formal conflation of philosophy with Christianity—as some have accused. In fact, the knowledge of what theologism is—referring primarily to the misuse of philosophy by the theologian—helps to set the stage for seeking an understanding of the proper relationship of Christianity to philosophy, a unity which maintains formal distinction. This knowledge also provides a hermeneutical tool for the proper interpretation of Gilson’s later writings on Christian philosophy.

Opis:
Świętemu Tomaszowi z Akwinu tradycja przypisała miano Doktora Anielskiego ze względu na fakt opracowania przezeń w sposób systematyczny szeregu kwestii z zakresu angelologii. Jan Paweł II odwołując się w Fides et ratio do tego tytułu, przedstawia św. Tomasza jako „mistrza sztuki myślenia i wzór uprawiania teologii”, zwracając zarazem uwagę na wyjątkowość oraz aktualność ujęcia relacji wiary i rozumu, które wypracował Akwinata. Aktualność tego ujęcia wiąże się z faktem, że – jak zauważa Papież – błędne podejścia w tej dziedzinie w postaci fideizmu oraz skrajnego racjonalizmu, które zdominowały kulturę nowożytnej Europy, doprowadziły do jej głębokiego kryzysu. O jego wyjątkowości zaś, decydują – wskazane przez Jana Pawła II – umiejętne godzenie nadprzyrodzonego i rozumnego charakteru aktu wiary oraz umiejętne łączenie jedności wiary i rozumu z niezbędną autonomią dziedzin poznania opartego na wierze oraz refleksji czysto racjonalnej. Choć w samej encyklice nie znajdujemy bezpośrednich nawiązań do problematyki angelologicznej, to jednak właśnie wykład prawd wiary w tej dziedzinie przeprowadzony przez Doktora Anielskiego stanowi wdzięczne źródło przykładów owocnej współpracy dwóch metaforycznych skrzydeł, o których czytamy w Fides et ratio – wiary i rozumu – umożliwiającej wzniesienie się na wyżyny dostępnego człowiekowi poznania.
St. Thomas Aquinas is referred to by Tradition as the Angelic Doctor due to his systematic studies on a number of questions concerning angelology. John Paul II, alluding to this title in Fides et Ratio, presents St. Thomas as a “master of the art of thinking and the model of practicing theology”, directing our attention to the exceptional and always relevant nature of Aquinas’ approach to the relation between faith and reason. As the Pope observes, the relevance of this approach is linked to the fact that erroneous perspectives in this field, in the form of fideism and the extreme rationalism which dominated the culture of modern Europe, have led to an acute crisis. According to John Paul II, the exceptionality of Aquinas’ approach lies in his skilful reconciliation of the supernatural and the rational character of the act of faith, and in his combining faith and reason into a unity, while respecting the indispensible autonomy of cognitive fields based on faith and purely rational reflection. Although there are no direct references to angelology in the encyclical, the presentation by the Angelic Doctor of the truths of faith, in this respect, constitutes a rewarding source of examples of fruitful cooperation between these two metaphorical wings of faith and reason, which in Fides et Ratio enable man to ascend to the heights of knowledge.

Artykuł prezentuje nowy dokument wypracowany w Komisji „Wiara i Ustrój” Światowej Rady Kościołów The Church: Towards a Common Vision, który w języku polskim opublikowano pt. Ku wspólnej wizji Kościoła. Dokument ma wysoką rangę ekumenicznego uzgodnienia. W punkcie pierwszym wspomniane zostają omawia opracowania poprzedzające dokument, punkt drugi wprowadza w jego strukturę, natomiast w punkcie trzecim analizie poddano wybrane istotne treści uzgodnienia. Skoncentrowano się na trynitarnym charakterze Kościoła i jego jedności, jedności Kościoła jako daru Trójjedynego Boga i zadaniu dla chrześcijan, Kościele jako sakramencie zbawienia, trosce Kościoła o los stworzenia, społeczno-politycznych aspektach zaangażowania Kościoła w świecie, szeroko rozumianym stosunku Kościoła do świata, zagadnieniu ciągłości i zmiany w Kościele oraz na procesie pojednania posługiwań. Ostatnia część zawiera próbę krótkiej oceny.
The article presents the new document of the Commission “Faith and Order” of the World Council of Churches, which was released under the title The Church: Towards a Common Vision. The document is declared to be an ecumenical agreement of high importance. In the first chapter works have been displayed which preceded the document, the second point highlights its structure and the last one scrutinizes its important contents. Author focuses on the trinity nature of Church and its unity, on the unity of Christians which has been considered both as a gift of the Triune God and a task for Christians, on the teaching on Church as the sacrament of salvation, on the Church’s concern for creation, on the social and political aspects of Church’s involvement in the world, on the broad Church’s relation toward the world, on the issue on continuity and change of the Church and finally, on the process of ministry reconciliation. A short assessment of the document is provided as a conclusion.

For the development of ecumenical movement we need the ecclesiastical models which define the possibilities of the unity of Christians. The ecumenical dialogues demonstrate that in each Christian Church the imageries of the unity are various. The problem of lack of one vision of the unity triggers another - lack of one idea of the Church, or at least lack of such understanding which would be accepted by all Christians. The third problem is concerned with the former ones and is about the ecumenical hermeneutics which relies on various ecclesial models of unity. The denominational conditionings bring about that there have been different visions of the unity of the Orthodox, the Protestants and still that of the Catholics. The article presents, chiefly on the basis of elaborated materials of the Commission "Faith and Order", the principal contemporary ecclesiastical models of the unity of Christians: the organic union – the model preferred by the Anglican Churches (1), the reconciled diversity – the Evangelical oriented model (2), the conciliar fellowship – the Orthodox model of unity (3), the communion of communions – the Catholic oriented model of the unity (4).
Dla rozwoju ruchu ekumenicznego potrzeba modeli określających możliwości jednoczenia się chrześcijan. Dialogi ekumeniczne pokazują, że w prawie każdym Kościele chrześcijańskim wyobrażenia o jedności są różne. Z problemem braku jednej wizji jedności łączy się drugi – brak jednego pojęcia Kościoła, a przynajmniej brak takiego jego rozumienia, które byłoby akceptowane przez wszystkich chrześcijan. Trzeci problem związany jest z dwoma poprzednimi i dotyczy ekumenicznej hermeneutyki, która jest uzależniona od różnych eklezjalnych modeli jedności. Wyznaniowe uwarunkowania sprawiają, że inną wizję jedności mają prawosławni, inną protestanci, a jeszcze inną katolicy. Artykuł prezentuje głównie w oparciu o opracowania Komisji „Wiara i Ustrój” podstawowe współczesne eklezjalne modele jednoczenia się chrześcijan: jedność organiczna – model preferowany przez Kościoły anglikańskie (1), pojednana różnorodność – ewangelicko zorientowany model (2), wspólnota soborowa – prawosławny model jedności (3), wspólnota wspólnot – katolicko zorientowany model jedności (4).

Artykuł dotyczy komunijnej interpretacji Kościoła przedstawionej w dokumencie Komisji „Wiara i Ustrój” The Church: Towards a Common Vision. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu, prezentującym etapy wyłaniania się z prac Komisji eklezjologicznej kategorii komunii, przechodzi się do omówienia jej znaczenia w samym dokumencie. Przytacza się zaproponowaną definicję Kościoła-‑komunii. Wyłaniają się z niej trzy ściśle ze sobą powiązane wymiary komunii kościelnej: z Trójjedynym Bogiem, w życiu wspólnoty wierzących oraz w jej w misji, które następnie zostają omówione w najważniejszych swoich aspektach w perspektywie ekumenicznej. Kościół jest misteryjną rzeczywistością zbawczej komunii człowieka z Trójjedynym Bogiem. W życiu Kościoła oznacza to dążenie do eschatologicznej pełni poprzez wzrastanie w komunii określonej przez widzialne elementy jedności: wiarę, życie sakramentalne, posługiwanie oraz misję do świata. Misję Kościoła zinterpretowano jako wprowadzanie komunii w świecie naznaczonym na skutek grzechu podziałami i rozbiciem: w pierwszej kolejności poprzez zapraszanie wszystkich ludzi do przyjęcia zbawienia w Jezusie Chrystusie, następnie również poprzez zaangażowanie w społeczne i moralne zmagania ludzkości oraz troskę o całe stworzenie. Przy okazji wymienia się ważkie problemy ekumeniczne związane z omawianymi zagadnieniami oraz propozycje ich interpretacji w perspektywie komunijnej.
This article deals with the interpretation of the Church as communion as presented in the document The Church: Towards a Common Vision, of the “Faith and Order” Commission. After a short presentation of the stages of the Commission’s work that contributed to the emergence of the ecclesiological category of communion, the meaning of this category in the document is described. This begins with the definition of the Church as communion. This definition indicates three interrelated dimensions of ecclesial communion: with the Triune God, in the life of the community of believers and in its mission. Subsequently the most important aspects of these three dimensions are described from an ecumenical perspective. The Church is a mysterious reality of the saving communion between man and the Triune God. Therefore, in the life of the Church it means to move towards eschatological fullness, by growing in essential elements of visible communion: faith, sacramental life, ministry and mission in the world. The mission of the Church is interpreted as introducing communion in a world that is marked by divisions and brokenness because of sin. Primarily, it consists of inviting all people to accept the salvation in Jesus Christ, followed then by its commitment to the social and moral struggles of all humanity and to promotion of the unity of creation. Throughout, important ecumenical issues are considered as a whole with their possible interpretation in the perspective of communion.

Presented here general idea of understanding the unity of faith in the Church according to Ipatij Potij (Hipacy Pociej), the Kiev Metropolitan, seems to cast a new light on the very phenomenon of integrating the union into the Ruthenian Church. Potij claimed that the greatest enemy of the uniatic process in Ruthenia are the persons and institutions not interested in serving the Church as the lively centre of spiritual life of the whole society. That is why he developed his own view concerning maintaining of the unity in the Kiev Church after the union was formed, and the permanent bonds of Christianity in Ruthenia with the traditional Eastern heritage and full relationship with the universal dimension of the Church. It was extremely open vision and at the same time filled with creative inspiration.

Wiara była zawsze istotnym elementem w życiu wspólnoty Kościoła. Zanim jednak otrzymała formalny wyraz w wyznaniu soborów w Nicei i Konstantynopolu, była przeżywana i kształtowana przez wspólnoty Kościołów lokalnych. Wymiana poglądów oraz konieczność obrony przed nurtami nieortodoksyjnymi były powodem gromadzenia się biskupów na synodach i szukaniem wspólnej drogi do pokonania narastających trudności. Credo formułuje się w ciągu wieków, używając najpierw sformułowań biblijnych, a później również tych, które wywodzą się ze świata filozofii pogańskiej. Niniejszy artykuł pokazuje rozwój elementów wspólnych dla Credo Kościoła w dokumentach synodalnych od I do III wieku.
Faith has always been a significant element in the life of the Church community. However, before it was officially expressed in a profession of councils in Nice and constantinople, the faith had been experienced and formed by local church communities. the opinions exchange and the necessity of protection from non-orthodox trends were the reason for bishops gathering in synods and searching for a common way to overcome increasing difficulties. The creed has been formed over centuries, using biblical expressions at first, and then the ones which derive from the world of pagan philosophy. This article presents development of elements common for the church creed in synod documents from the 1st to the 3rd century.

A genesis of Christian churches combines ideas: the Church – the God’s House (Domus Dei) and the Church – a home of worshipers (Domus Ecclesia). The essence of architectural creation is set by a church liturgy. A timeless-transcendent act of a liturgy takes place in a real environment of a believers’ community. Churches forms contain immutable elements – rooted in a liturgy, and values derived from conditions of time and place. Universalism and dynamism of the Church is reflected by an evolution of the sacral architecture of Christianity. Contemporary churches, which fit well into a term the “demythologized” Christian architecture, are an expression of ecumenical aspirations for an unity of faith.

Nietrwałość i wyraźny współczesny kryzys wspólnot naturalnych rzutuje na niewłaściwe rozumienie chrześcijańskiej wspólnoty wiary, co z kolei powoduje jej niewłaściwe przeżywanie, doświadczenie. Niemałe znaczenie ma tutaj także daleko idąca instytucjonalizacja życia społecznego i zarazem nieufność wobec wielu instytucji, ich kontestowanie. Może to przyczyniać się do traktowania instytucjonalizacji wiary – Kościoła – jako instytucji, przy zatrzymywaniu uwagi, także przez praktykujących chrześcijan, tylko na zewnętrznych jej aspektach. Tymczasem źródłem i podstawą wspólnoty wierzących jest misterium paschalne Jezusa. Realizując w pełni obietnice starotestamentowe, Jezus podczas pożegnalnego posiłku ze swoimi uczniami w Wieczerniku prosi Ojca o taką miłość i jedność między nimi, jaka jest właściwa Ojcu i Synowi. Podstawą tego jest obecność Jezusa z uczniami – w założonej przez Niego wspólnocie – której to obecności nie podważa nawet Jego śmierć. Wręcz przeciwnie. Składając siebie w ofierze Ojcu, Jezus usuwa najbardziej zakłócającą miłość i jedność przeszkodę, czyli grzech. Zmartwychwstając zaś, pozostaje we wspólnocie niezależnie od czasu i przestrzeni. Sakramentalnie, zarówno Jego śmierć, jak i obecność we wspólnocie po zmartwychwstaniu, urzeczywistnia łamanie chleba – Eucharystia. Jezus, pozostając w niej pokarmem dla wierzących, jest również najściślej zjednoczony z uczestnikami tego wydarzenia. Jednoczy ich też między sobą w taki sposób, jaki poza Eucharystią nie jest możliwy do osiągnięcia.
Impermanence and contemporary crisis of natural communities, impacts on wrong understanding of the Christian community of faith, which in turn causes the improper experience. Great importance it is also far-reaching institutionalization of social life and at the same time mistrust of many institutions, their contesting. This may contribute to the treatment of institutionalization of faith – the Church, as an institution, while retaining attention, also by practicing Christians, just outside its aspects. Meanwhile, the source and foundation of the community of believers is the paschal mystery of Jesus. Implementing fully the promises of the Old Testament Jesus, during a farewell meal with his disciples in the Upper Room, he asks the Father to such love and unity among them, what is the appropriate Father and the Son. The basis for this is the presence of Jesus with his disciples – a community founded by him – which it does not undermine the presence of even his death. On the contrary, offering himself to the Father, Jesus removes most interfering love and unity obstacle, that is a sin. Rising from the dead and remains in the community regardless of time and space. Sacramentally, both his death and the presence in the community after the resurrection, embodies the breaking of the bread – the Eucharist. Diecezja siedlecka obchodzi w tym roku 20. rocznicę ogłoszenia błogosławionymi Wincentego Lewoniuka i XII Towarzyszy, męczenników za wiarę z Pratulina. Byli oni ludźmi prostymi, zwyczajnymi ale duchowo dojrzałymi, o czym świadczy nie tylko ich męczeństwo, ale całe życie. Męczennicy z Pratulina oddali swe życie za jedność Kościoła i wierność papieżowi. Ich wierność obietnicom chrztu świętego i umiłowanie Kościoła są wzorem do naśladowania dla współczesnych wiernych. W niniejszym artykule zostały ukazane wybrane aspekty duchowości męczenników z Pratulina, jakie przedstawiają dokumenty przygotowane dla beatyfikacji oraz liczne świadectwa im współczesnych. Zwróciliśmy uwagę na umiłowanie Eucharystii, modlitwy i ducha autentycznej pobożności, które cechują ich życie. Męczennicy uczą również miłości do Kościoła i troski o jego rozwój. Ukazaliśmy również ich przywiązanie do Ojca Świętego i jego nauczania. Ostatnim rysem charakteryzującym męczenników jest ich pobożność maryjna i przywiązanie do Matki Bożej. Analizując te i inne elementy duchowości męczenników została ukazana ich aktualność we współczesnym Kościele.
This year the diocese of Siedlce celebrates 20th anniversary of the beatification of Vincent Lewoniuk and 12 Companions, the Pratulin Martyrs for the faith. They were simple and ordi-nary people but spiritually matured what proves their martyrdom as well as their entire lives. The Martyrs of Pratulin sacrificed their lives for the unity of the Church and faithfulness to the Pope. Their faithfulness to the baptismal vows and love to the Church are clear patterns for the faithful of today to be followed. In this article we consider some selected aspects of the spirituality of the Pratulin Martyrs, that are presented in the documents prepared for their beatification purposes and also numerous testimonies of their contemporaries. We will also point to their love for the Eucharist, prayer and the spirit of authentic piety that mark their lives. We will also present their commitment to the Pope and his teaching. The last feature that characterize the Martyrs is their devotion to Our Lady. The author, analyzing these and other elements of the spirituality of the Martyrs, poses the question about their relevance for the modern Church.

Artykuł ma na celu zbadanie kwestii kościelnego uznania innych wspólnot chrześcijańskich w kontekście dzisiejszej dyskusji prowadzonej w obrębie wspólnot prawosławnych po Świętym i Wielkim Soborze Kościoła Prawosławnego na Krecie w 2016 r. Autor dąży do bliższego przyjrzenia się relacji między jednością Kościoła i jednością wiary, tak jak jest to rozumiane w Kościołach prawosławnych, jak i znaczeniu zawartego w dokumencie Relacje Kościoła Prawosławnego z resztą świata chrześcijańskiego „historycznego miana innych nieprawosławnych Kościołów chrześcijańskich”, z którymi Kościół prawosławny nie pozostaje w komunii. Konkludując, autor argumentuje, że właściwe rozumienie wspomnianego dokumentu powinno być bazą dialogu ekumenicznego według założeń prawosławnych.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the question of the ecclesiastical recognition of the other Christian communities in the context of nowadays discussions within the Orthodox communities, after the Holy and Great Council in Crete (2016). We will look closely at the relation between the Church unity and the unity of faith, as understood by the Orthodox Churches, as well as at the meaning of the “the historical name of other non-Orthodox Christian Churches” with which the Orthodox Church is not in communion, stated by the document Relations of the Orthodox Church with the rest of the Christian world (ROCC).  In the end, we will argue that ROCC if understood properly, could constitue the basis for the ecumenical dialogue on Orthodox.

The text talks about the reasons for author’s leaving the painting after the studies at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and also about why the author has returned to painting. Certainly it shows the spiritual journey of the author, but above all it demonstrates how the prevailing spirit of the times and the poisons circulating within this spirit can undermine faith in the sense of what one does in life and talks about the need to resist the unilateral pressures of the age. The text was originally published in 1996 in the monthly Znak no. 494, p. 123, as: Confession of sins and faith of the painter (orig. Wyznanie win i wiary malarza).

Autor artykułu, wykorzystując teksty przemówień, które Benedykt XVI kierował do Europejczyków podczas swego pontyfikatu, starał się ukazać, jaki wkład wniosło chrześcijaństwo, a zwłaszcza Kościół katolicki w budowę cywilizacji europejskiej. Otóż – według papieża – chrześcijaństwo przyniosło przede wszystkim religię monoteistyczną – objawioną wiarę w Boga w Trójcy Osób, a wyeliminowało politeizm i bałwochwalstwo; wniosło religię racjonalną, a uwolniło od irracjonalnych mitów i zabobonów; wniosło kulturę słowa, a przez wieki likwidowało analfabetyzm; wprowadziło ethos pracy, rozwinęło kulturę artystyczną: muzyczną, teatralną i malarską, powołało dzieła miłosierdzia, ukształtowało tożsamość narodów oraz tożsamość Europy. Autor przedstawił też oceny papieża odnośnie do  sytuacji politycznej, społecznej i ideologicznej we współczesnej Europie oraz jego opinie w kwestii jej zjednoczenia, uwzględniające plusy i minusy tego procesu, jak: zapewnienie pokoju na kontynencie i w świecie, rozwój gospodarczy i cywilizacyjny, dążenie do jedności, a nie do jednolitości; zdrową świeckość i poszanowanie autonomii Kościoła. Uwzględnił wreszcie wezwania, aby podstawą pomyślnej przyszłości Europy stało się respektowanie wartości uniwersalnych i chrześcijańskich. Chrześcijaństwo służy bowiem  „oczyszczaniu rozumu”, przyczynia się do formowania sumień i kształtowania humanizmu integralnego, a cześć oddawana Bogu oznacza zarazem troskę o człowieka.
The author of the article tried to show – based on the speeches of Benedict XVI to Europeans – what the Christianity, especially the Catholic Church, has brought to the European civilization. Well, the Christianity brought the monotheistic religion – the revealed faith in God in the Trinity of Persons. It cleansed of polytheism and idolatry; it brought rational religion and freed from irrational myths and superstitions; it brought a culture of word, and, over the centuries, it eliminated illiteracy; it introduced the ethos of work, musical culture and a number of its other kinds, the works of charity. It shaped the identity of nations and the identity of Europe. The author also presents the Pope’s assessment of the contemporary political, social and ideological situation in Europe. He pointed out that the union of Europe ensures peace on the continent and in the world, as well as economic and civilization development. This union is to lead, according to the original assumptions, to unity, not to uniformity; wholesome secularism must respect the autonomy of the  Church. The respect of universal and Christian values is the base of a successful future. Christianity serves “purification of the reason”, contributes to the formation of conscience and an integral humanism. Worshiping God means caring for man.

Opis:
Prayer is an encounter expressing man's bond with God. At the basis of this encounter there is faith in the existence and love of personal God. During praying entrance occurs into a personal relation not only with God, but with another man as well. An encounter with another man in prayer, connected with a trusting call for blessing, changes the relation between the persons, creates an internal bond, in which prejudice gives way to mutual openness. Liturgy is a special dimension of the God-man interaction, in which dialog takes place by means of liturgical signs. In the catechetical formation intellectual education is recommended, but raising religious sensitivity, being open to God’s gifts, building a community and acceptance of everything that Christ offers through the Church, is more important. The catechist plays the priority role in developing the communication between God and man in the pupils that are catechized. In order to meet this demand he himself has to feel the need of prayer and of bearing witness. In using prayer the catechist's creative attitude is necessary. He should find out about the religiousness of the given class, their intellectual possibilities, spiritual sensitivity, the ability to reflect, and their general state of faith that was acquired in their homes. He has to synchronize prayer with the Church, parish or school feasts, as well as with the important situations in the pupils' lives, spontaneous requests made by the catechized, with the environment they live in, and with the esthetic qualities of the room where the lesson takes place.
