Opis:
In August 1509, the town of Turku (Swe. Åbo) in southwestern Finland, then a part of the Swedish realm, was attacked by a Danish fleet. The sources tell of great material devastation and loss of life. However, although the sack of 1509 has been mentioned in numerous works treating the history of medieval Turku or medieval Finland in general, historians have not so far analysed how the recuperation process actually looked and which individuals and institutions involved in it were the crucial actors. Contemporary sources, especially the correspondence between higher authorities, cast light on Turku’s urban recovery. Such sources may exaggerate the role of ecclesiastical authorities as leaders of the process, we get only sporadic glimpses of the actions of the town council. But it seems there were no plans to send material relief – at least not foodstuff – to Turku. Instead, the authorities were more interested in preventing further attacks and maintaining societal peace. The higher clergy focused on the restoration of the cathedral and retrieving stolen cult items. It is also possible that the translation of a local saint in the summer of 1514 was utilised as a unifying and healing event for spectators and participants.

In 1493, King John of Denmark entered into a formal treaty with the grand prince of Muscovy, which was later renewed and discontinued only with the fall of King Christian II. The treaty generated frequent embassies to Copenhagen and Moscow. The treaty was clearly aimed against Sweden and posed a serious strategic problem there. It also provides a backdrop to the diminished Swedish political trust in the Olden burg kings. Several medieval papal bulls prohibited Latin Christians from contact with infidels and schismatics. This papal embargo represented an over-arching policy that all within the Latin Christian community were expected to observe. The need for trade required degrees of embargo and in effect, the embargo only prohibited trade and interactions with infidels that may harm the Christian community – especially arms trade and offensive alliances. The Danish-Muscovite alliance was a clear breach of this embargo. Earlier studies have not, however, appreciated the significance of this alliance in the larger international context. This article studies the role of Muscovy in the conflicts between Sweden and Denmark from 1493 to 1523. How did the Oldenburg kings utilise the treaty to pursue their strategic goals? What were the Swedish repercussions? Did the Oldenburg kings publicly acknowledge their Muscovite liaison? How did the larger Latin Christian community react? What does this treaty tell us about political change in early sixteenth-century Northern Europe?

Enn Tarvel (1932–2021) is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most erudite Estonian historians. His expertise encompassed a wide range of historical topics, including medieval and early modern history, with a particular focus on the Polish rule in Livonia. This article provides insights into Tarvel’s educational background, his self-taught approach to research, and the challenges he faced during his career due to his reluctance to join the party. Despite his significant impact on Estonian scholarship, Tarvel’s international reach was somewhat limited due to the constraints of the Soviet academic system. Notably, Poland played a crucial role in his academic career. Tarvel’s first dissertation, later published as a book, focused on the management of Polish state manors and the peasantry in southern Estonia during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This research earned him recognition in Estonia and abroad, particularly in the Eastern Bloc. Tarvel was one of the first Estonian historians to submit his contributions to Polish historical journals. He published articles and other pieces in, for example, Kwartalnik Historyczny and Zapiski Historyczne. The vital role played by his Polish contacts for his academic development is emphasised not only by those articles but also by his research stays in Poland in 1959 and 1969 and his correspondence with Polish scholars in the 1960s and 1970s. Access to Polish archives and libraries facilitated his meticulous research. Tarvel also participated in numerous international conferences. However, he was not always able to attend them due to the constraints imposed by the Soviet regime.

The issue of the gathering of the Lithuanian nobility in Vilnius, organised in August 1715 by Great Hetman of Lithuania Ludwik Konstanty Pociej as a way of sparking a protest against the contributions imposed by King Augustus II for the maintenance of the Saxon army in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, has so far been marginally addressed in historiography. The purpose of the article is to examine the causes and consequences of the gathering and to determine the Russian attitude towards it. Using manuscript sources from Russia, Belarus, Poland and Lithuania, the author argues that the Russians had minimal influence over the organization of the gathering, yet they used it as a means to combat King Augustus II’s attempts to free himself from Russian influence. There is ample evidence to put forward a hypothesis that the request to Tsar Peter I for acting as an intermediary in the conflict between the king and the nobility was conceived by Pociej and other leading officials of the Commonwealth rather than by Russian diplomats. The article also argues that the convention in Vilnius contributed significantly to the formation of the Tarnogród Confederation in the Crown. The Poles believed that the Lithuanians were determined to uphold the declaration of the Vilnius convention to instigate military action against the king’s policies and contributions for the purposes of the Saxon army. When the news of the Vilnius gathering spread throughout Poland, riots began in the southern provinces, and part of the Polish army declared a confederation and took up arms.

This article focuses on King John Albert’s visit to Elbląg, Malbork, and Toruń during his trip to Royal Prussia in 1494–1495. The visit to Elbląg has received minimal attention in historiography, as the primary purpose of the event was to accept the oath of allegiance. Thorough research reveals that John I Albert stayed in Elbląg from 21–28 December 1494 to partake in the Christmas festivities. During this period, the city served as the seat of the Crown’s court. The source base for the article is comprised of royal accounts kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records, which contain lists of John Albert’s court expenses for this trip. The article also highlights the arrival of an envoy from Stephen, Voivode of Moldavia and a legation from Margrave Frederick Hohenzollern, along with other ceremonies and feasts held at the court. Notably, the lists of expenses provide insights into the city’s responsibility for supplying the monarch’s kitchen, table, and horse fodder. This visit stands out as the longest recorded royal visit in Elbląg’s history.

Opis:
Existing studies on the historical knowledge of the nobility within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth primarily rely on printed sources. However, these studies often overlook the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, focusing on the Kingdom of Poland instead. This article aims to present Lithuania’s history as depicted in the silvae rerum of eighteenth-century noblemen. Through scientific investigations, it is evident that descriptions of Lithuanian history were less frequent compared to Polish history. The period covered in these descriptions typically ranges from the origin narrative (ethnogenetic legend) to the reign of Władysław Jagiełło. Notably, the history of the Jagiellonian dynasty is incorporated into the history of Poland. By comparing the noblemen’s silvae rerum with historiographical works, both from the 18th century and earlier periods, the article examines the sources of the nobility’s historical knowledge. The analysis reveals the continued influence of works by Maciej Stryjkowski and Wojciech Wijuk Kojałowicz, while also acknowledging the impact of eighteenth-century writers such as Kasper Niesiecki, Władysław Łubieński, and Franciszek Paprocki on the historical content of the silvae rerum.

Opis:
The tragic events of 3–4 September 1939 in Bydgoszcz, which went down in history as ‘The Bloody Sunday of Bydgoszcz’ due to German propaganda, are among the unsolved mysteries of World War II and mark the beginning of the Polish campaign in September 1939. The prevailing view in Polish historiography is that in the morning hours of 3 September, a German sabotage took place in Bydgoszcz, which involved an attack on the retreating troops of the Polish Army, defeated in the so-called ‘Pomeranian corridor’, by either local Germans or outside saboteurs. According to the opinion prevailing in German historical publications relating to these events, amid wartime panic and anti-German psychosis, as the Polish troops were retreating through the city, they and the armed groups of local Polish self-defence started mutual shelling of one another. The German minority was blamed for this, which resulted in its brutal pacification. For over ten years, a Polish historian Włodzimierz Jastrzębski has been presenting an opinion that differs from the Polish historiography. The present article is a polemic against his latest book on the subject, in which he blames the events of Bydgoszcz and the brutal pacification of the German community in Bydgoszcz and neighbouring towns on local Polish military and civilian authorities who, in his view, sought a crackdown on the German minority. The article addresses errors in his method, criticism of sources and the manner in which they were used, in compliance with a preconceived thesis. The author has also presented his own hypotheses on the origin and the course of the events of 3–4 September 1939 in Bydgoszcz.

Teutonic castles in Prussia have long captivated the interest of scholars, with greater emphasis placed on the fortresses of Teutonic commanders and, notably, Malbork Castle. Lesser attention, however, has been given to the castles of lower-ranking Teutonic officials. One such castle is the Teutonic Pflegers’ fortress in Bytów, which stands to this day. Research on this site has been ongoing since the early 20th century, primarily conducted by art historians who have predominantly relied on architectural elements to delve into the castle’s construction chronology and spatial arrangement. Remarkably, numerous written accounts, both medieval and modern (16th–17th centuries), have been preserved concerning this castle. By incorporating these historical documents alongside archaeological findings made over the past three decades, the authors have reassessed prior conclusions about the castle’s early history and reconstituted its medieval spatial layout. Regrettably, little information is available regarding the initial residence of the Teutonic Pflegers in Bytów during the latter half of the 14th century. The brick castle was erected around the turn of the 15th century, displaying a rectangular design with four corner towers. The primary building was located on the northwestern side. Within the courtyard, a distinctive feature was a transverse wall that divided the castle into two sections, viewing from the side of the kitchen. This architectural choice was distinct from other fortifications of Teutonic officials constructed in the first half of the 15th century in Prussia. The design of the castle in Bytów was innovative, while its architecture and spatial layout were to align with the evolving demands of warfare, such as the development of firearms.

Under the leadership of Queen Margaret Valdemarsdotter (1353–1412), the three Nordic kingdoms – Denmark, Norway and Sweden – were united in the so-called Kalmar Union that lasted until 1523, when Sweden seceded. In this article, the rule of Queen Margaret Valdemarsdotter will be analysed in light of earlier and contemporary medieval queenship. Queen Margaret was confronted with all the challenges posed by female rule. She dealt with them in a way that shows her awareness of contemporary and historical models, but she also contributed to creating a new form of government when she was elected ‘authorised lady and the right owner of the realm’ in the Kingdom of Denmark in 1387. This model was subsequently introduced also in Norway and Sweden. We will look into possible role models for Queen Margaret. We will also investigate some aspects of her rule to see what may be learnt about her style of government. Her choice of collaborators is a significant part of her politics. A queen regnant of the fourteenth century was dependent on men to carry out her orders and act as her representatives and intermediaries in her lands. Where did Queen Margaret find her associates and what were the virtues she expected them to display in her service? Further, we will make use of Niccolò Machiavelli’s concept of ‘New Rulers’, to find out if it may help us analyse Queen Margaret’s actions.

In the research on the Kalmar Union, the focus has mainly been on the kings as personae agens of the development. Even though one could not avoid treating Queen Margaret Valdemarsdatter as the founder of the Union, she has often been portrayed as genderless in political terms. Her successors, on the other hand, disappeared into historical obscurity or were mentioned more in passing sentences. Yet the queens had a considerable influence on the cohesion of the Union, just as Dorothea of Hohenzollern and Christine of Wettin played a role in restoring or maintaining the dynastic claims of the Oldenburg family. This article will therefore attempt to shed light on the political role of these princesses within the Kalmar Union and at the same time try to find reasons for the damnatio memoria of these queens.

The attitude of Gdańsk towards the war between Denmark and Sweden of 1501–1512 still has not been fully researched by historians. The city, which gained some autonomy in its contacts with foreign powers after 1454, remained neutral towards this conflict. This status did not change after Lübeck and the other Wendish cities had joined the war on the Swedish side, which increased the risk for Gdańsk with regard to shipping through the Danish Straits. Gdańsk maritime trade suffered losses due to the privateers commissioned by both Danish King Hans and the Lübeck city council. This article examines two cases of ships from Gdańsk that were seized. In 1509, the vessel of skipper Hans Paul, which carried armour for the garrison of Malbork Castle, was captured by Danish privateers, and on 30 May 1510, three ships that were sailing back to Gdańsk from Western Europe were seized by Lübeckers. The main purpose of this case study, which is based largely on the correspondence included in the official Gdańsk town records currently stored in the State Archives in Gdańsk, is to find out how those disputes were conducted and what impact they had on the city, its maritime trade and diplomacy. The cargo of armour seized in 1509 was recovered only with the help of a Polish envoy in Copenhagen, who cooperated with the envoy sent by the city of Gdańsk. In the second case, Gdańsk authorities made attempts (which included sending official letters and legations, and talks during the Hanseatic diets) to recover them at least until the 1540s, albeit to no effect. This failure was a consequence of Gdańsk’s neutral status, which limited the influence the city had over King Hans and the city authorities of Lübeck. Also, the safety of navigation in the Danish Straits was a priority for Gdańsk.

The study of warfare in Belarusian Podvine (Polack and Viciebsk Voivodeships along with the Braslaŭ district) throughout the Livonian Wars has garnered considerable scholarly attention. However, several pivotal aspects have not been explicated, including the objectives behind various war campaigns and the efficacy of strategies employed by the adversaries – the Tsardom of Muscovy and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1569). A thorough analysis of military logistics, with its focal points being transportation routes and fortifications, is essential for a comprehensive insight into these issues. The assessment of military potential associated with Lithuanian and Muscovite castles is most effectively executed through an in-depth analysis of their arsenals and garrisons. Evidently, the supply of weaponry indicated that Vilnius anticipated an intense struggle for control over the Daugava River, which was significant for dominance in Livonia. The Polack campaign led by Ivan the Terrible during the winter of 1562/1563 should be evaluated as a rational, yet daring manoeuvre. This endeavour instigated the construction of a robust network of fortresses in the occupied territories, the upkeep of which proved very expensive, and the lack of waterways further exacerbated the problem. Conversely, the Lithuanians adeptly devised a defensive framework on the left bank of the Daugava River, and successfully thwarted efforts to block Viciebsk – a city that maintained control over river transportation. The skilful utilisation of roads and watercourses within Podvine emerged as a pivotal factor contributing to the triumphs of Stephen Batory’s military campaigns from 1579 to 1582.

Opis:
The history of the Nazi camp in Bogusze was initially documented during the Polish People’s Republic period, a time marked by limited research opportunities and constraints put on memory policy. The camp’s history was altered through the process of remembrance formation instituted by the Polish Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy. In the 1960s, a legend emerged surrounding the alleged execution of Italian prisoners of war held at the camp in Bogusze, and a guerrilla ambush of SS soldiers near the town of Ełk. This narrative first appeared in the verification documents of Władysław Świacki and Czesław Nalborski in 1964, gaining prominence through the literary work of Aleksander Omiljanowicz, published in 1965. This legend found its way into numerous scholarly publications, resulting in a distorted representation of the camp’s history. The absence of comprehensive source research perpetuated false narratives concerning the period of the camp’s existence, its names, size, and the identity and number of its victims. To address this, the author of this article conducted archival and source research to verify various episodes in the camp’s history. The camp in Bogusze existed from 1941 to 1944 and experienced a series of name and purpose changes. From June 1941 to June 1942, it was known as Oflag 56 and hosted Soviet POWs; from July 1942 to November 1942, it was still used to detain Soviet POWs under the name Stalag I E; and from 2 November 1942 to 3 January 1943, Polish Jews were held in the camp, which was then referred to as Sammellager. From January 1943 to May 1944, the camp in Bogusze was again used to detain Soviet POWs, this time under the name Stalag I F/Z Prostken. Additionally, the camp, referred to as Stalag I B/PR, was used to hold interned Italians between September 1943 and May 1944. In January and February 1944, Volksdeutsche evacuated from Ukraine were hosted in Lager Bogusche, and Polish residents of frontline villages and towns were held at Stalag 373 from May to December 1944. At its peak, the camp encompassed an area of 30 hectares. Post-war investigations suggest that approximately 25,000 individuals may be buried in the camp’s cemetery and execution site.

Opis:
In 1605, Sebastian Petrycy of Pilzno published a translation of Aristotle’s Politics into Polish, accompanied by his own original commentary. In this work, Petrycy presented an image of an idealized state that served as a model to address the issues within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The article deals with the political thought of Sebastian Petrycy, whom older historiography regarded as a monarchist or even a supporter of absolutism. Contrary to this categorisation, the article analyses the philosopher’s oeuvre through the lens of early modern republican theory. Central to the analysis are the fundamental elements of early modern republicanism such as virtue, freedom, law, and a mixed system. Petrycy critiques the implementation of these principles within the noblemen’s republicanism and proposes modifications to move towards what is defined for the purposes of this article as ‘burghers’ republicanism’. Utilizing Quentin Skinner’s methodology, Petrycy’s work has been set against the political crisis of Zebrzydowski’s rebellion, and its political significance has been demonstrated, despite its academic nature. Additionally, an attempt has been made to highlight Petrycy’s commitment to the royal camp, alongside the hypothesis that the author was expressing the intentions of senators-regalists while simultaneously seeking to improve the situation of non-noble citizens in the country.

During the war with Sweden in Livonia in 1700, Augustus II decided to call up his own privateer flotilla. The most information about its activities can be found in the legacy of the Swedish commissioner in Gdańsk, Per Cuypercrona, kept at the Riksarkivet in Stockholm. In the late 1700s and early 1701s, he reported to Charles XII on the activities of the Polish privateers from the base in Puck. The first researcher to study this issue was Przemysław Smolarek in the 1950s. He concluded that the establishment of the flotilla in the autumn of 1700 was not part of a broader policy, but an ad hoc decision prompted by the withdrawal of the Danes from the Northern War as a result of the Peace of Travendal. However, Smolarek did not manage to access all records related to privateers, including copies of privateer patents issued by Augustus II and the Saxon resident in Copenhagen, Johann de Schade. Another analysis of Cuypercron’s legacy led to their discovery. The purpose of the article is to discuss and analyse the aforementioned materials. According to these sources, the establishment of the privateer flotilla by August II took place earlier, on 15 August 1700, i.e. before the Danish surrender, and the main area of their activity was the coasts of Courland and Livonia.

The Tuba Dei bell from the tower of St. Johns’ Church, the present-day Cathedral Basilica in Toruń, is one of the largest bells in Poland. It is also one of Toruń’s most important monuments and symbols of the city. It has attracted the interest of researchers not only on account of its uniqueness, but also because of the ongoing dispute regarding the date it was cast. This paper presents a voice in the discussion regarding the dating of the Tuba Dei bell of Toruń. Source literature has accepted the suggestions of the year 1500 or 1522 and various daily dates, and the discrepancies were based on different ways of reading and interpreting the inscription on the bell. The article is an attempt to verify the hypotheses accepted so far based on written sources that have not been included in the findings. In the course of researching medieval accounts of Toruń churches, the authors found information indicating the date the bell was cast. The St. John’s Church account book from 1520–1553 contains data that clearly establishes it as 27 September 1522.

Opis:
The book by Norbert Delestowicz on members of the Teutonic Order in the first half of the 14th century was highly anticipated within the scholarly community, and the research conducted by the historian from Poznań seemed promising. Until now, comprehensive biographies were prepared only for the representatives of the Prussian branch of the Teutonic Order, who appeared in primary sources up to 1309. In his endeavour to bridge this historiographical gap, the author of the reviewed book undertook an extensive effort to create a collective portrait of the analysed group and to construct several hundred biographies of Teutonic knights, priests, and sariant-brothers. However, the laborious task of accurately collecting and organising the vast amount of source material posed numerous challenges for the author, leading to evident shortcomings. This discussion article aims to highlight various errors that can be found throughout the book, including those in the general chapters, individual biographies, and the appended lists of Teutonic officials and convent members. Many of these errors suggest the disorder that prevailed during the creation of different parts of the book, as well as shortcomings stemming from incomplete or inadequate use of available primary sources and relevant scholarly publications. Regrettably, the extent of identified deficiencies prevents us from considering the reviewed monograph as a fully successful scholarly publication.

Opis:
On 17 July 1724, the local Jesuit college was broken into and vandalised by a mob of Toruń Protestants. These events, the so-called tumult of Thorn, prompted a strong reaction from the Polish authorities. Under the court’s ruling, Mayor Johann Gottfried Rösner and nine other people who were found guilty were beheaded. This case resonated strongly in Europe. The prevailing opinion in the historiography is that the conduct of the municipal authorities following the tumult was slow and indecisive. In the light of the recently discovered sources (fragments of the drafts of city council minutes, originally destroyed during the siege of the city in 1813), it can be concluded that in the first days following the tumult the council did undertake an investigation, in which the blame for provoking the riots was quite explicitly placed on Jesuit students, and information about the incidents was sent to the council’s resident at the royal court in Warsaw. However, the decision to take any further steps was indeed procrastinated. The Jesuits were much quicker to disseminate the information about the harm done to their order in Toruń across the whole country.

The aim of this article is to present an international and interdisciplinary research project that is being undertaken at the Chair of Regional History at the Department of History at Kiel University since 2020. The goal of this project is to process the history of all medieval ecclesiastical institutes in the historical province of Pomerania and to publish it in an encyclopedic work, which in its structure and design is oriented towards the “Klosterbücher” already published for other historical regions of Germany. The extensive study on the monasteries of Pomerania, published by the archivist Hermann Hoogeweg nearly a century ago, remains indispensable to this day, but in the light of numerous historical, art-historical and archaeological researches carried out both in Germany and Poland over the last decades a substantial revision is expedient. In the first stage of the project, all written, art-historical, pictorial, archaeological, and architectural sources for each Pomeranian monastery were compiled and processed by the project team. In the second part now following, these sources will be provided for particular groups of authors, who will prepare the articles for the “Compendium of monasteries in Pomerania”. Besides exhaustive bibliographical references, lists of sources and inventories these entries will contain both general information on the particular institutes (name, affiliation, location, etc.) as well as detailed references on the constitution, the religious activities, the economic system, the possessions and equipments, the cultural accomplishments, and so forth. The publication of the two-volume and richly illustrated compendium is planned for 2027.

The article discusses the issue of giving newly born children first names in two working class residential areas: Mokre in Toruń and Szwederowo in Bydgoszcz, between 1875 and 1914. The source base consisted of parish registers and the birth register of the General Register Office for those areas. The main research objectives were to determine the total population, the denominational structure of the two districts, the number of births with respect to denomination, births in terms of the number of given names, the popularity of first names, second names and the first-name summaries in the denominational context for each district. Both areas showed similar features of the denominational structure: an increasing percentage of Catholics at the expense of Evangelicals, the existence of small communities of Jews and representatives of other Christian denominations. In terms of anthroponymy in working class districts, certain similarities were observed, although there were also differences, primarily in the middle names given to newly born children. In Szwederowo, Catholics far more commonly opted for the first name only, whereas Evangelicals – for one or more middle names. In Mokre, on the other hand, the ratio between persons with first name only and those with middle names was more balanced. In both districts, the differences were mainly in the context of the denominational structure, which involved the attachment of Catholics to names from Christian tradition, especially those derived from the New Testament, while Evangelicals to names of Germanic origin, as well as those referring to the dynasty or literary characters.

The Second Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was presented by the Russian Empress Catherine II as an involuntary concession to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II and proof of her pursuit of a lasting alliance with the Kingdom of Prussia. The falsehood of these claims, which also appear in historical scholarly publications, is exposed by the correspondence of Otto Igelström, the last Russian ambassador and, at the same time, chief commander of the Russian army in the pre-partition Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This source material, previously unknown, was collected in Moscow at the Archives of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire and the Russian State Archives of Ancient Documents and is the key to understanding relations between the neighbouring states that partitioned the Commonwealth. Igelström’s correspondence, in passages revealing both his own military projects and orders received from St Petersburg, demonstrates that Russia, contrary to its diplomatic rhetoric, saw the Second Partition as a step on the road to the expected armed conflict with Prussia. The Russians wanted to make the remaining territory of the Commonwealth, treated as a buffer zone, the theatre of this war. Since Prussia was regarded as a military rival, the partition was carried out so that the Russian Empire, rather than the Kingdom of Prussia, would be more prepared in case of a prospective war between the two countries. Igelström’s main objective was the immediate transfer of the majority of Polish-Lithuanian soldiers under the Russian command. These plans also demonstrate the Russian authorities’ disregard for the political costs of achieving their military objectives, including the threat of an outbreak of uprising in Poland.
