Opis:
October 15 2007 will mark the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Captain Thomas Sankara, the young and charismatic president of Burkina Faso. His assassination was committed with impunity and assassins have not been found until now. Sankara's simplicity, his high spirits, his sense of humour, his honesty and his generosity, has appealed to a generation of conscious young Africans, who see him in themselves. He came to power in Haute Volta on 4th of August 1983, changed the country's name into Burkina Faso. It was a strong signal showing his will to end the neo-colonial system. Struggling against corruption, for advancement of women, rural economy, citizen responsibility, health or education, the achievements of Thomas Sankara in these areas are an example of the way forward. Thomas Sankara has been murdered on 15th of October 1987. According to some observers, with external implications.

Opis:
Mirosław Przylipiak in his essay paints a comprehensive picture of Thomas Elsaesser’s professional development as a scholar of film and media studies. The paper also concentrates on his organizational activities, focused on promoting audiovisual culture, which unveil his broad intellectual pursuits. Przylipiak investigates Elsaesser’s academic background, drawing attention to his major areas of contribution to film studies: the history of German cinema, classical and post-classical American cinema, and film theory. With regard to the latter, the essay discusses Elsaesser’s original, multidisciplinary approach that combines various scholarly orientations in order to situate film within broader discussions in philosophy, anthropology, art history, media studies, and cultural studies. It highlights that Elsaesser creatively draws from many methods without fully subscribing to any of them, and in doing so he manages not to fall into theoretical contradictions. The article navigates the reader toward Elsaesser’s numerous organizational activities. It focuses on his institutional work which led to the establishment of several educational programmes and the creation of a book series dedicated to film and media at the University of Amsterdam. The paper then outlines Elsaesser’s contribution to the ongoing discussion on contemporary complex film narratives, which he called mind-game films. In this context, Przylipiak focuses on the issue of agency, as one of the dominant and recurring issues explored by Elsaesser in his large body of work on films, particularly with regard to his studies on mind-game films. The essay ends with reflections on Elsaesser’s philosophical understanding of film’s ontological status and his reflections on film studies as academic discipline.

Od ponad dwustu lat prawa i wolności człowieka tworzą fundament egzystencji ludzkiej. W 2001 roku opinia międzynarodowa uznała handel niewolnikami za zbrodnię przeciwko ludzkości. Przez cały 2007 rok Wielka Brytania obchodziła dwusetną rocznicę zniesienia handlu niewolnikami. W dniu 25 marca 2008 roku Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych obchodziła pierwsze doroczne obchody Międzynarodowego Dnia Pamięci Ofiar Niewolnictwa i Transatlantyckiego Handlu Niewolnikami. Thomas Paine był przywódcą duchowym rewolucji amerykańskiej i francuskiej, bojownikiem o prawo do wolności, zaciekłym wrogiem absolutyzmu, a przede wszystkim orędownikiem walki o prawa człowieka.
For more than two hundred years, human rights and freedoms have formed the foundation of human existence. In 2001, international opinion declared the slave trade a crime against humanity. Throughout 2007, Britain celebrated the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade. On March 25, 2008, the United Nations celebrated the first annual commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The same year marked the bicentenary of the official end of the international slave trade. On March 3, 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed a bill approved by Congress that prohibited the importation of slaves into the territory under the authority of the United States. The slave trade and the phenomenon of slavery in the British colonies of North America caught the attention of the eminent political columnist, Thomas Paine. Thomas Paine was the spiritual leader of the American and French revolutions, a fighter for the right to freedom, a fierce enemy of absolutism, and a champion of the struggle for human rights. The article aims to present Paine's journalistic and political activities in the fight against social injustice, which was the issue of slavery in the British colonies in America. His involvement in social and political life in the emerging new country on the world map – the United States of America – widely described in the press, contributed significantly to taking action to abolish slavery. Thomas Paine, because of his merits in the struggle for the abolition of slavery, was hailed by posterity as the first abolitionist of America.

Opis:
In the Roman Central Jesuit Archive (ARSI) two letters by the Jesuit sculptor Thomas Hutter (1696-1745) of 1722 and 1723 have been preserved. They were written from the Sandomierz college to the General of the order, Michelangelo Tamburini. After the noviciate at St Szczepan Home in Cracow in 1718-1720 in the autumn of 1720 Thomas Hutter was transferred from Cracow to the Sandomierz college as a so-called coaudiutor temporalis. This was connected with the needs of the Sandomierz Jesuits who in 1717 took over the Gothic St Peter church from the parish. The Jesuit sculptor was welcome in Sandomierz as there was enough work for him in the church for many years. In Hutter’s long stay in Sandomierz that lasted till 1727 and was filled with work, about 1722 a clear crisis appeared. The discussed letters are proof of this. The first of them is a response to the offer that the order authorities sent to particular Jesuit homes, connected with a possibility of work in foreign missions. Hutter said he was ready to go to foreign missions, although he did not define the country he wanted to work in. At the same time he asked to be transferred to the German Province jurisdiction. In the second letter the artist repeated his request, this time suggesting a region for the mission. It was to be Turkey or countries subjected to it, like the Crimean Khanate. Hutter said he was going to learn the language and offered his work not only strictly as a missionary but he was ready to be a spy in Turkey as well. He was not afraid of death or imprisonment; he asked the authorities not to worry about him in such a case. He was ready to cross the Turkish border in summer 1723. However, the whole project was not put into effect. The sculptor remained in Poland and did not give up his job. However, a few years later he decided to leave the order and start a family; he also established a lay, excellently prospering workshop. The discussed correspondence is an exceptionally rare – in the Polish reality of the 17th-18th centuries – example of preservation of a sculptor’s letters. The more surprising are the letters written by a Jesuit sculptor, especially to the supreme authorities of the Order. The problems mentioned in them, the way they are formulated and the vastness of the letters show the person of Thomas Hutter from a surprising angle, as a religious, courageous, broad-minded man with various interests and talents. All this takes us far from the stereotype of a sculptor’s quiet work and of stabilization offered by the service in a religious order. Work in missions never belonged to the easiest ones, and in Muslim countries, openly hostile to Christianity, it must have been linked with the sense of constant threat, which Hutter realized, as his second letter shows.

The writings of the saints speak against self-love as a hindrance to friendship with God, while Aristotle speaks of self-love as the basis for virtuous friendship. What causes this apparent discrepancy? Not only is there a difference between good and bad self-love, such that bad self-love must be eradicated, but there is also the cessation of the act of good self-love as the soul progresses spiritually. Then only the love for God remains in act within the perfection of charity and Union with God.

The article begins with the statement that there is one aspect of St Thomas’s work that has not received due scrutiny as a literary form, one with solid dramatic qualities and structure: the Article. The Article is as Thomistic as the syllogism is Aristotelian. This particular mode of argument was evidently original with St. Thomas: he did not derive it from the work of any other writer, yet its inner movement is of the essence of dialectic, from the opening proposition to opposing objections, then “to the contrary” position as found in orthodoxy, and then the writer’s resolution, and so on. It is a variation on the classic sic-et-non, a reasonable, balanced to and fro of the sort beloved by disputants. No parallel or even parody of this Article is to be found in any known literature before or since the thirteenth century. The author aims to show that part of the sheer power of the Article resides in the fact that it has two levels of operation. The surface is composed of the dialectical to-and-fro adumbrated above. But under that surface lies a rhetorical structure constructed along the lines of the five divisions of the rhetorical logos as laid out by Cicero and Horace.

Tematem artykułu jest przyjaźń w ujęciu św. Tomasza z Akwinu. Omówiona przyjaźń stanowi uzupełnienie i pogłębienie problematyki miłości.
The topic of the article is friendship according to St. Thomas Aquinas. In his views friendship is a kind of love which humans as a persons can attach to. The issue of love Thomas presents in Summa theologiae. But the issue of friendship he presents in Commentary to Nicomachean Ethics. It is important that the Thomas Aquinas` views which are presented in the both works are complementary. The friendship which was described by Thomas is an addition and it makes more deep the issue of love. According to St. Thomas Aquinas the friendship in the appropriate sense is amicitia honesti. The other kinds of friendships (amicitia utilis, delectabilisv) can exist provided that they are similar to amicitia honesti. Unquestioned problem is that the true friendship needs the mutual similarity of friends in terms of acquired virtues. So it is difficult to say about friendship in appropriate and absolute meaning between unmoral people. If it was possible, there wouldn’t be very important things – mutual similarity in good and the community. The interesting addition of the issue of human friendship is a problem of friendship between God and human person (caritas). Caritas makes human person and his relation with other people more perfect. It also makes that we can love other people truly on account of love connecting us with God. However the article presents only the friendship as a relation between human persons.

The article focuses on the eponymous protagonist of Isobel Gunn, a Canadian feminist historical novel by Audrey Thomas, published in 1999. Based on a real story, the novel fictionalizes the life of an Orcadian woman who made her transit from the Orkney Islands to the Canadian north in male disguise, and was only identified as a woman when she went into labour. The article juxtaposes the novel against its poetic antecedent The Ballad of Isabel Gunn, published by Stephen Scobie in 1983. In the article Gunn’s fate as a unique transvestite m(other) in the Canadian north is compared to the fate of famous transvestite saint Joan of Arc. Though removed from each another historically and geographically, both women are shown to have suffered similar consequences as a result of violating the biblical taboo on cross-dressing. Isobel’s sudden change of status from a young male colonizer to the defenseless colonized is seen in the context of managing the female resources by colonial authorities. At the same time, the fact that Isobel allows herself to be deprived of her son is analyzed in the light of insights on the maternal by Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray. The absence of the mother and the ensuing condition of her offspring’s orphanhood are shown as a consequence of reducing the position of the mother to that of an imperial servant, the fruit of whose body can be freely used and abused by the male imperial authority.

The author seeks to answer this question basing his considerations on the analysis of the Summa Theologiae by St. Thomas Aquinas.

My paper seeks to locate Thomas Dekker’s handling of underworld jargon at the interface of oral and literary cultures. The paper briefly looks at a play co-authored by Dekker and then examines two “coney-catching pamphlets” by him to see how he tries to appropriate cant or criminal lingo (necessarily an oral system) as an aesthetic/commercial programme. In these two tracts (namely, The Bellman of London, 1608; Lantern and Candlelight, 1608) Dekker makes an expose´ of the jargon used by criminals (with regard to their professional trappings, hierarchies, modus operandi, division of labour) and exploits it as a trope of radical alienation. The elusiveness and ephemerality of the spoken word here reinforce the mobility and deceit culturally associated with the thieves and vagabonds – so that the authorial function of capturing cant (whose revelatory status is insistently sensationalized) through the intrusive technologies of alphabet and print parallels the dominant culture’s project of in-scribing and colonizing its non-conforming other. Using later theorization of orality, the paper will show how the media of writing and print distance the threat inherent in cant and enable its cultural surveillance and aesthetic appraisal.

The aim of this study is to show the essence of unbelief based on the views of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Because in his view unbelief is the opposite of faith, speaking about the unbeliever inevitably requires a knowledge of what faith is. Therefore, Thomas’s views on the topic of unbelief are interwoven in the content of the problem of faith. Due to the participation of human authorities, the structure of unbelief is the same as faith, that is, it is constituted by reason and will. Reason is their subject, and will be the agent. However, unbelief as the abandonment of the truth and goodness contained in the revelation is at the same time the non-acceptance of grace, without which the supernatural faith does not exist. Because Saint Thomas understands faith as an act of reason which, under the influence of the will and with the cooperation of grace, recognizes as truth the content contained in the Gospel, all other activities which omit even one element included in the faith consistently recognize as unbelief. As a result of the new forms of unbelief and reflection on them, some philosophers postulate a reverse order to Thomas, that is, the priority of unbelief before faith.

The paper emphasizes the degrees of assimilation of French vocabulary in the German language system. Consequently, the collected material, derived from one hundred pages of the novel, has been divided into two large groups: 1) borrowings without German word-formation means, 2) borrowings with German or Germanized word-formation means in terms of derivation and composition. Noun borrowings in unaltered and altered forms are prevalent among the group of words without German word-formation means. In terms of derivation, the most numerous group is made up of verbs and participles. As regards composition, there were compounds observed containing both modified elements and modifiers of French origin. Nouns account for the largest share of the vocabulary collected, while adjectives and adverbs are less frequent.

Opis:
We define a new quantum dynamical entropy for a C*-algebra automorphism with an invariant state (and for an appropriate 'approximating' subalgebra), which entropy is a 'hybrid' of the two alternative definitions by Connes, Narnhofer and Thirring resp. by Alicki and Fannes (and earlier, Lindblad). We report on this entropy's properties and on three examples.

Opis:
Humanitarian intervention and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) are currently limited and encumbered by a pervasive absence of a political will. In states’ calculations, political considerations are constantly winning-out over the moral considerations of saving at-risk segments of our planet. While institutional and legal reforms undoubtedly play a role in addressing this challenge, such reforms and structures have existed for generations now, and have largely failed to bridge this gap from ‘moral necessity to political action’. What has been lacking is a moral understanding of humanitarian crises that is capable of reliably motivating the international community to undertake remedying actions, rather than merely expressions of concern. Such a moral foundation is achievable through institutional cosmopolitanism, an understanding of humanitarian intervention as satisfactions of our negative duties, and specifically the work of Thomas Pogge.
