This brief note focuses on a simple fluid, i.e., a homogeneous, chemically inert, and electrically neutral fluid, for which, in the linear nonequilibrium regime, the thermodynamic state is expressed by a relation between pressure, temperature, and density. The approach based on the elementary scales is used to check the validity range of both the classical irreversible thermodynamics and the extended irreversible thermodynamics. The achieved result reveals that the classical irreversible thermodynamics fails in providing an adequate response when the mechanical solicitations exceed limit values.

The thermodynamic relations describing equilibrium of a multi--phase thermoelastic solid are obtained in a way similar to that used in the multiphase fluid theory. The phase transitions of the first order are defined and equilibrium equations of the Capeyron--Clausius type are derived. Also, the phase transistions of the second order are introduced and equilibrium equations of the Ehrenfest type are obtained. A general theory is illustrated by examples.
Analizujemy związki termodynamiczne opisujące równowagę ciała termosprężystego złożonego z wielu faz. Czynimy to w sposób podobny do stosowanego w teorii płynów wielofazowych. Po określeniu przejść fazowych drugiegi i trzeciego rodzaju wyprowadzamy związki typu Clapeyrona--Clausiusza i Ehrenfesta. Ogólną teorię uzupełniamy przykładami.

The paper presents some aspects correlating thermal stability of RNA folding and the occurrence of structural motifs in natural ribonucleic acids. Particularly, the thermodynamic stability of 2'-5' and 3'-5' linked RNA and the contribution of unpaired terminal nucleotides (dangling ends) in secondary (2D) and tertiary (3D) structures of RNA are discussed. Both examples suggest that during evolution nature selected sequences and structures of RNA which are the most thermally stable and efficient for their biological function.

Description of the recognition specificity between proteins and nucleic acids at the level of molecular interactions is one of the most challenging tasks in biophysics. It is key to understanding the course and control of gene expression and to the application of the thus acquired knowledge in chemotherapy. This review presents experimental results of thermodynamic studies and a discussion of the role of thermodynamics in formation and stability of functional protein-RNA complexes, with a special attention to the interactions involving mRNA 5' cap and cap-binding proteins in the initiation of protein biosynthesis in the eukaryotic cell. A theoretical framework for analysis of the thermodynamic parameters of protein-nucleic acid association is also briefly surveyed. Overshadowed by more spectacular achievements in structural studies, the thermodynamic investigations are of equal importance for full comprehension of biopolymers' activity in a quantitative way. In this regard, thermodynamics gives a direct insight into the energetic and entropic characteristics of complex macromolecular systems in their natural environment, aqueous solution, and thus complements the structural view derived from X-ray crystallography and multidimensional NMR. Further development of the thermodynamic approach toward interpretation of recognition and binding specificity in terms of molecular biophysics requires more profound contribution from statistical mechanics.

In view of the high cost and difficulty of ensuring the accuracy in the measurement of fire smoke velocity, the measurement system developed using platinum resistance temperature detectors and an 8-bit microcontroller, is used to realize the fast measurement of high-temperature fire smoke velocity. The system is based on the thermodynamic method and adopts the Kalman filter algorithm to process the measurement data, so as to eliminate noise and interference, and reduce measurement error. The experimental results show that the Kalman filter algorithm can effectively improve the measurement accuracy of fire smoke velocity. It is also shown that the system has high measurement accuracy, short reaction time, low cost, and is characterized by high performance in the measurement of high-temperature smoke velocity in experiments and practice.

The thermal stability of enzyme-based biosensors is crucial in economic feasibility. In this study, thermal deactivation profiles of catalase Aspergillus niger were obtained at different temperatures in the range of 35° C to 70° C. It has been shown that the thermal deactivation of catalase Aspergillus niger follows the first-order model. The half-life time t 1/2 of catalase Aspergillus niger at pH 7.0 and the temperature of 35° C and 70° C were 197 h and 1.3 h respectively. Additionally, t 1/2 of catalase Aspergillus niger at the temperature of 5° C was calculated 58 months. Thermodynamic parameters the change in enthalpy ΔH*, the change in entropy ΔS* and the change Gibbs free energy ΔG* for the deactivation of catalase at different temperatures in the range of 35° C to 70° C were estimated. Catalase Aspergillus niger is predisposed to be used in biosensors by thermodynamics parameters obtained.

Opis:
The paper deals with the problem of sea-ice pack motion and deformation under the action of wind and water drag forces. Differential equations describing the behaviour of ice, with its very distinct material responses in converging and diverging flows, express the mass and linear momentum balances on a horizontal plane (the free surface of the ocean). The thermodynamic effects (ice melting and lead water freezing) are accounted for by adding source terms to the equations describing the evolution of the ice thickness and area fraction (concentration). These thermodynamic source terms are described by means of a single function that idealizes typical ice growth-rates observed in winter in the Arctic. The equations governing the problem are solved by a fully Lagrangian method of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Assuming that the ice behaviour can be approximated by a non-linearly viscous rheology, the proposed SPH model was used to simulate the flow of a sea-ice pack driven by wind drag stresses and varying seasonal temperatures. The results of numerical simulations illustrate the evolution of an ice pack, including distributions of ice thickness and ice area fraction in space and time for assumed temperature distributions.

In this study, the internal energy and the specific heat of the one-dimensional Ising model obtained in the frame of the generalized statistical thermodynamics by Andrade, were somewhat extended and compared with the internal energy and the specific heat which were calculated in the standard (conventional) statistical thermodynamics. In the q → 1 case, approaching of the generalized internal energy and the specific heat to the standard well-known results, were illustrated by numerical applications. In addition to these, N ≫ 1 case was also investigated.

Thermodynamics and adsorption studies were conducted with a dye of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite. Adsorption of the dye was investigated with an initial dye concentration at pH 8±0.2, 303, 313 and 323 K. The adsorption experiments were carried out isothermally at three different temperatures. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium data and the results were discussed in details. The kinetic data agreed with the pseudo-first order model with rate constants (k2) in the range of 3.05–1.59.10–1 g/mg min. The thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy, entropy change and enthalpy were calculated for natural diatomite. These values showed that adsorption of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite was a spontaneous and endothermic process.
