Opis:
The author presents the historical development of variants of a low-cost and low-tech building method, which can be assessed as sort of stovewood construction, presently known as stackwall or cordwood construction, i.e. a method of building a wall with tiny stovewood and clay. The building method was being developed since about 1821 in the Vilnius region (now in Lithuania), and has been recorded in a number of technical publications in 1821, 1834, 1839, 1845, 1917 and 1930. The development of the local sort of stovewood construction is assessed as a very specific phenomenon, and should be appreciated for its influence on the vernacular building in the neighbouring territories, including the Podlasie region in N-E Poland.

Opis:
Poles in the Republic of Lithuania are the best organized Polish minority abroad. They are represented at various levels of government, in the media, organizations, and there is an extensive system of education in their mother tongue. The cultural sphere is an important area of their activity. It is mainly focused on folklore. At the same time, there has appeared a number of youth groups performing various styles of music and functioning on the Lithuanian music market, which is, however, marginally covered in the press. Their work does not principally refer to the problems of the life of the Polish community, and it sometimes expresses critical content. However, these performers introduce the Polish language to a wide cultural circulation and strive for a slightly different shape of relations with the Lithuanian majority than the older generations perceive it. They also contribute to the integration of youth communities. Undoubtedly, the generational rebellion, which was often noticeable in the activities of the Polish musicians of young generation, was a response to the challenges of adulthood and, at the same time, constituted a form of patriotism.

Opis:
Introduction. In the opinion of many researchers, nursing staff are exposed to an exceptionally high level of occupational stress. The problem of stress in the working environment of the nursing staff becomes more and more important in the context of increasing staff shortages and insufficient support from colleagues and employers. The aim of this study was to analyse stress factors indicated by the nursing staff in Poland and Lithuania, and to assess their job satisfaction. Materials and method. Two standard research tools were used in the study: the Nursing Stress Scale and the Job Satisfaction Survey. The study involved 230 respondents from Poland and Lithuania. The sample was chosen randomly and incidentally. Results. Based on the analysis of collected materials, the greatest stress factors in the work of the nursing staff were identified, which included interpersonal conflicts between nurses and doctors and between nurses, and death and dying. The study indicated that there is a relationship between stress and job satisfaction among Polish nurses (r=-0.33;p=0.001) and Lithuanian nurses (r=0.34; p=0.001). The greater the stress, the lower the job satisfaction. Low job satisfaction was connected with low remuneration, which is still inadequate to professional duties, and the lack of promotion opportunities. The study confirmed that there were significant differences in job satisfaction among Polish and Lithuanian nurses (Z= –6.27; p<0.001). Conclusions. The study confirmed a high level of stress and dissatisfaction among nursing staff in Poland and Lithuania.

Opis:
The issue of nomenclature for mixed breed animals has been taken up by Polish researchers many times and its significance for onomastic and dialectal research has been emphasised often enough. With respect to the North-Eastern Borderlands, sparse studies have been dedicated to it so far. Therefore, this paper discusses linguistic and cultural contacts reflected in proper names of two species of mixed breed animals in the Vilnius Region. The material was collected using the traditional and online survey method. This article presents the phonetic and morphological characteristics typical of the Polish of the Borderlands, lexical features, and nomenclature influences that were discovered while analysing zoonyms. It discusses the influences of the Lithuanian, Russian, and Belarusian languages on the nomenclature for animals living in households of people of Polish descent in the Vilnius Region.

In the Vilnius region near Troki there is the tiny village of Gaj situated in the forest; it is part of the parish of Stare Troki in the Archdiocese of Vilnius. The village is inhabited by dozens of residents who are Polish. In this village there is a chapel of Our Lady Health of the Sick, which was built in the thirties of the last century thanks to the efforts of Włodzimierz Andrzejewski’s brother (a member of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God) and his family. It was consecrated in 1937. The chapel houses a copy of the image of Our Lady Health of the Sick from the Holy Cross Church of the Brothers Hospitallers in Vilnius. To this day, on the last Sunday in August, the faithful gather in the parish fair to give thanks to God, through the intercession of Our Lady, for everything they received from Him.

Opis:
As many as 7465 Soviet soldiers died during fighting against the German troops in July 1944 in the Vilnius region (today’s Lithuania). After World War II, the Soviet authorities turned the soldiers’ burial sites into cemeteries and war memorials. Located in towns and cities, these places of remembrance served to perpetuate the Soviet perspective on World War II and the Soviet ideology. Nonetheless, the burial sites have been regarded as foreign elements in the region, both culturally and ideologically. After 1990, the Lithuanian government adopted new national and international regulations concerning the burial places of soldiers killed during World War II. In 1992, the local authorities in Nemenčinė (Polish: Niemenczyn) organized an official ceremony during which the remains of the Soviet soldiers were transferred from the town centre to a municipal cemetery. A red star on the monument was then replaced by an orthodox cross. Such changes may help to relieve the towns and cities from the bitter legacy of the former Soviet ideology. After 2000, using the Lithuanian international obligations, the Russian side began reconstructing and contemporizing the places of remembrance by placing the symbol of the orthodox cross next to the symbol of the red star. This may, in time, change the attitude of the local communities towards such places. However, Lithuanian authorities are inclined to believe that the cemeteries of the Soviet soldiers may become a “Trojan horse” and have an adverse effect on Lithuania.
